Aix-en-Provence Ch D F: Skander Mansouri/Luke Johnson def. Cristian Rodriguez/Diego Hidalgo [4] 6-3, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Even though C. Rodriguez/D. Hidalgo had a notable break point earlier in the match, but L. Johnson/S. Mansouri's aggressive play managed to get themselves out of trouble and control the flow in most of the match. Their efficient point construction stemmed from their anticipation, where they kept some notable points straightforward to minimum 4 strokes, ending with their winners most of the time, or a return that got the fourth seeds run over. This way, they managed to generate 8 break points, while D. Hidalgo/C. Rodriguez's unforced errors did not help anything except for the non-conversion of any of their chances.
Furthermore, L. Johnson/S. Mansouri also appeared more solid on serve. Firing 4 aces than D. Hidalgo/C. Rodriguez's 1, the unseeded pair had an effective first serve winning percentage at 85%, 16% more than the fourth seeds, which got him out of trouble in numerous occasions. However, D. Hidalgo/C. Rodriguez had more vulnerable second serves as even though they only double-faulted once, they won 14% lesser second serve points due to their rushed +1 shots at times.
This turned out to be L. Johnson/S. Mansouri's fourth Challenger title together as a pair this year after also winning the Rome Challenger last week, strengthening their position inside the doubles' Top 100 by ranking 69 and 66, respectively, as well as ranking 24 in the doubles Race. Their only way is up (and staying together) at this rate.

‘Bam’ aims to become a two-weight World champion in San Antonio
Jesse Rodriguez: I’m happy to be back in the ring and do what I love to do. I have the opportunity on Saturday night to become San Antonio’s first two-weight World champion and that would make the night just that little more special.   I would have been ready to fight at 115lbs as I entered camp on weight, I just came into camp more disciplined and a little more in shape coming into camp; I’ve had a ten-week camp away from my family, so I’ve sacrificed a lot and come Saturday night it’s going to show.     I want to go out and show everyone I’m still ‘Bam’ Rodriguez. After my last performance, people wrote me off, so I am ready to do what I do and I’m a different person in that ring.    All the belts, all the champions at 112lbs - that’s what I want. Let’s make these fights, give the fans what they want, so step up to the plate and make it happen.    Cristian Gonzalez (fights Jesse Rodriguez): I’ve earned this opportunity and I am ready to give everything in the ring to gain this crown on Saturday night.   We’ve studied him, we understand his qualities, we’ve worked hard in camp and as a Mexican I must give everything to try to become World champion on Saturday night.   Murodjon Akhmadaliev: I’m so happy to be in Texas again, I’m ready to showcase myself and show my skills in a great fight.    Undisputed is a dream of mine that has always been there, but right now, I’m fully concentrated on this fight. I want to show a great fight with a great opponent.   Marlon Tapales (fights Murodjon Akhmadaliev): We’ve worked so hard for this fight and we’re ready. He’s a good boxer, he’s very talented but we’ve prepared well for it with good sparring.    This is so big for me and my career. I know it’s the biggest chance and my career.    Raymond Ford: I’m always ready, this is nothing new. It’s just another fight and he’s another fighter. He’s got experience, but so did my last opponent.    People act like I am not supposed to want the big fights. I’m meant to stay at this level for my whole career. All the greats go through this, fighting someone like Jessie, a former World champion, before they go to a World title, and now this is my turn for that.   I rarely take a step back now, I’m getting more comfortable in the pocket, I am not worried about getting hit. We’ve been working on a lot in camp, and I’m sparring top notch fighters, so I know I am ready for this, and these are the types of fights, we wouldn’t have taken it if not. I’ve been calling for these types of fights and these are the fights that are going to make me get up and get active.   We’re back in San Antonio, I feel like I’m the Fresh Prince of San Antonio, I love coming here and they might boo me before, but they will get to like me. I’ve come here to dominate, and that’s what I am going to do.    Me, Shakur, Keyshawn, Khalil, we’re the future of the sport, this was a great camp in Vegas and all in all, it’s going to be a good fight and I’m ready.   Jessie Magdaleno (fights Raymond Ford): This is must win, most definitely. We both said yes to this fight and we’re going to put on a great show, we might even steal the show.   It’s everything; the experience, the dog in me, the hunger I have. I’ve been through some bad times, but I am ready to let the world know who I am, and I want to show that I’m ready to be back at the top, I want nothing less than that.    Fighting for a World title is all that is in my head. Nothing less, my hand will be raised.    Thomas Mattice: I’m hungry too. I am a war, so I am ready for all of that. I’m the ‘0’ collector.   I’ve been in his shoes before, so I know that he’s coming to fight, I’ve had that spot multiple times. So, I am sure he’s trained well and is fully prepared, but I know that I have. I don’t want the judges involved on Saturday night, so you know what I am coming to do.   Ramiro Cesena (fights Thomas Mattice): like any Mexican fighter, I come ready for a war, so I hope he is, because that’s what I am bringing on Saturday night.    We always need the opportunity to show that we have the desire and hunger to become known. As a good Mexican, I feel that this is my stage to move up the levels and show what I can do.   Israil Madrimov: I’m ready, I’ve stayed in the gym for a long time to get a fight and I’m happy to be in Texas, I had a great fight here last time. I fight for my fans, my country and my family.    I asked for a World title fight for my pro debut, so I have been ready for the very biggest fights for a long time, but my only focus is Saturday’s fight.   Raphael Igbokwe (fights Israil Madrimov): I’m excited. I didn’t come here to lose, I’m very confident. I spar World champions daily like Regis Prograis, O’Shaquie Foster, Austin Trout, and taking nothing from him, I know he’s not better than those guys.    The plan is to fight for a World title. I’m not here to make up the numbers, I can feel that chance being close.    Marc Castro: I’ve got a tough opponent in front of me, he’s ready and he’s had a proper camp - and that’s what I want, a real hard fight.   The fights are won in the gym, I’ve been preparing well, and you’ll see that on Saturday night. I know that I have a great fanbase in Fresno, they back me and I’d love to bring a show to my hometown as a headliner.   Ricardo Lopez (fights Marc Castro): I’ve come here from Tijuana and I am living out my dream right now. On Saturday, I will come known throughout the world and I won’t let anyone take my food off the table - I’ll achieve my dream on Saturday.    Khalil Coe: He’s bringing a lot of power and it’s a step up and challenge for me. I had to take a step back and evaluate my situation, my team. I made some changes for the better, and you can see that I’ve been on the up.   Jesus Martinez: this camp has gone to the next level, and I believe you are going to see that on Saturday night.    I’m maturing and really looking forward to putting on a great show. I can’t wait, I’ve got a tough opponent who is coming in off a couple of wins, but that’s just going to bring the best out of me.

Do you have any headcanons about Chris Rodriguez?
His name, for example.. I like cristobal rodríguez (I know cristian is a name in spanish too, but cristobal is more dramatic --also, rodríguez goes with a tilde--)
his mother's from veracruz, méxico (he was born there too)
his mum didn't know who hermes was, she married when chris was little and had a few kids with her new partner
one of them is marisol (a.k.a 'mari', a.k.a. 'mary', the one chris is talking about in BotL), he loves all his siblings but always got along better with marisol
when he was 12 a monster tried to attack him on his way back from fútbol and a satyr on his quest to find pan saw the whole thing and told chris' mum sent him to new york that summer
when chris first got to camp, he felt a bit lost, the culture was different, he missed his parents and siblings, he had to make an effort to think in english when he was tired (annoying thing to have to do, truly)
and his father didn't claim him
luke told him it was okay, gods were like that, that they were a family anyway, who needed recognition from those assholes
chris loved luke, he was the older brother --officially, even if he didn't know it yet-- he always wanted
he was always annoyed when clarisse went on and on about 'making ares proud' bc he was jealous that she knew who her father was, and did she really have to shove it in eveybody's face all the time??
but then once, after capture-the-flag, the ares cabin lost and clarisse was super upset --yelling at anybody who came close-- and off to the training arena.. chris followed her silently --he was always so good at staying quiet when needed-- and eventually saw her sit down angrily, arms crossed around her knees
he approached slowly, eventually, he got the courage to sit next to clarisse and waited until she spoke.. she told him that she dedicated all her triumphs --or attempts at winning-- to her father bc she was afraid he'd unclaim her if she fucked up
chris thought that sounded legit, and also that the gods were massive assholes (if anyone from méxico me quiere decir cómo dicen allá 'reverendos pelotudos hijos de puta', se agradece)
he told luke, a while later so as to not be so obvious, that he'd heard of other kids being wary of their godly parents revoking their claim, wondered perhaps if annabeth, always trying to prove her worth, might think that way too
luke neither confirmed nor denied annabeth's situation, but he told chris that yeah, he knew campers felt that way, that it was okay if chris was still upset about his deadbeat father not speaking up
chris asked if luke felt that way about hermes. "as if he could disinherit me? unclaim me? whatever gods do?" he snorted and explained to chris that nothing hermes did upset him anymore --not true but y'know how teenagers are--
he told chris that if gods couldn't even admit their children were theirs, they didn't deserve to use those children as weapons or tools --his quest had been bullshit, and had ended up with his questmate dead for no reason other than repeating other heroes exploits--
and y'know, to chris, luke was wise, and fair, and caring, why wouldn't he believe luke when he said there was another way?
I've a bunch more from later on but this is long enough as it is :D

Chris: Um, hello! I don’t know you that well, but you seem like a nice person. And you know quite a lot. Maybe too much… So, Luke send me with a question dedicated to you, in the hopes that you could answer it and help him prepare for… a defensive of Kronos. I think that we both know what I’m talking about. It’s not the sweetest thought, but I have to bear it and carry it on to you, regardless of how it makes me feel. Hermes is also the god of messages, isn’t he? I’ll have to conform.
Without more beating around the bush, what do you know about surviving the River Styx? Any thoughts on how Achilles, for example, went through it?
Greetings to you, Cristian Mercedes Leonardo Garcia-Rodriguez. [She has a soft smile on her face and a playful sparkle in her eyes, please do not pay attention to the painful yellowness of her face]. You're right, I know a lot, even too much, sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it, sometimes I'm indifferent, seeing the future gives a multifaceted and unusual attitude to everything.
As for your question, yes, I saw it the night I decided to join army... [She tilted her head thoughtfully to the side, her hair fell like silk threads and shone like thick honey]. Achilles was not actually dipped into the river. This legend appeared much later. He was just a great warrior.
to swim in the river Styx and acquire the curse of Achilles, three things are needed - The blessing of the mother, clarify for Luke that the mother can be in any state even out of her mind, any of her blessings will do. [She leaned closer to Chris, her breath warm on his face and smelling of tart tea]. a mortal anchor is something that gently connects you with your mortality, what you love and what is truly most important to you I think for Luke it will be Annabeth or Thalia.
you need to choose one place on the body, Achilles' heel, with one blow to this place you can kill. [She counted off her fingers with each sentence, counting the necessary actions]. Let Luke choose something extravagant that no one will think… [She looked at Chris with a softer look, her voice was quiet]. And Chris, my advice is for you personally - draw and repeat to you that you are safe. Clarissa loves listening to Taylor Swift and she really appreciates when people sing for her, even if the one who goes for her is a disgusting singer, it will be precious to her. And she loves caramel brownies with nuts... also want to say… I sincerely sympathize with you and am happy for you because you will be happy. I tell you this as someone who sees the future.
From the creators of the character, - thanks for your questions! and if it doesn't bother you, I'd like to get more questions from you :) and I just idolize the Percy Jackson/Achilles Song crossover, the fact that they are in the same universe is my fanon.

The second set turned out to be almost similarly flowed to the first set, as S. Mansouri's forehand winner set up a crucial equalizer right at the second point before a forehand return ace secured their one-point lead, followed by a +1 forehand error from D. Hidalgo/C. Rodriguez for the unseeded pair to break 3-1. They then consolidated to 4-1 and had not looked back since.
L. Johnson/S. Mansouri had to overcome a deciding point somewhere later in this match, but it was more into D. Hidalgo/C. Rodriguez holding their serve toward the end of that game. This way, the former stayed stable until the end of the match, where they successfully served it out to take the second set 6-3, thus securing their fourth Challenger title of the year as a pair.

Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez (Highlights/Knockouts)
By: YBU Sports
Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (17-0) was the breakout fighter of 2022. He took apart two of the best fighters at 115lbs in Sor Rungvisai and Carlos Cuadras as well as besting a tough Israel Gonzalez. Sadly, Rodriguez has decided to move back down from super flyweight to flyweight in order to make room for his brother, Joshua Franco, to chase world titles.
Still, Matchroom is trying to turn Bam into their first American star and will look to turn San Antonio into their base of operations. Bam will challenge for the vacant WBO flyweight title this Saturday (April 8) when he faces off with Mexican Cristian Gonzalez (15-1).
