30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 19
「 Best anime setting 」
Made in Abyss
i did not want to use any anime twice for this challenge, but i love the world building of the abyss. there are 7 known layers of the abyss. each layer is different from the last. the curses upon the divers gets worse and worse as you descend further inside. the creatures that live inside are terrifying. i love the anime, but i recommend reading the manga for this one. also the OST for made in abyss is beautiful.
Crimson Splitjaw go crazy
the challenge if you want to participate too ^_^

what do you think is bondrewd's ideal date?
Headcanons what Bondrewd's ideal date would be
Bondrewd (Made In Abyss) x GN!Reader
Warnings: none
Note: Realistically, he wouldn't go on dates, but who cares. In the fanfiction universe, you can break just about any rule! ( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)
Bondrewd is an enigmatic figure – mysterious and alluring, his date agenda is sure to be interesting. From exploring the depths and secrets of the Abyss to sampling exotic dishes from the local markets (I'm not sure yet if I would want to eat the food in the Golden City though…)
For Bondrewd, the perfect date would be an adventure
He loves exploring and trying new things, so an exciting day out filled with activities and experiences would certainly spark his interest
He would love to take his date out for an eye-opening tour of his beloved Abyss, showing off the beauty and unique creatures that live within its depths
“Come with me. I have great things in store for us… You have nothing to be afraid of, my dear. Let me take you to a realm of infinite wonder, where your greatest wishes and desires will come true… Let me take you to the Abyss, where all shall be as you desire…”
He would show you creatures like the Crimson Splitjaw (The Crimson Splitjaw is a large, legless reptile found in the 3rd Layer)
Bondrewd values ambition and courage, so he'd likely choose a date activity that involves pushing his boundaries and testing his limits, with plenty of inspiration and admiration for the wonders of nature
He would take the time to get to know his date, talking and listening intently
“Tell me about yourself, I am quite interested to learn more about you. Please, enlighten me.”
Bondrewd loves to share his knowledge of the depths and the creatures that inhabit it, and his date would be amazed by his stories of his adventures
On a date with Bondrewd, you would never quite know what to expect
He displays an almost theatrical level of stoicism and control, while also being incredibly unpredictable and calculating
His conversations are always full of wit and charm and he is always looking for ways to further his agenda. His presence exudes an aura of danger and mystery, making for an unforgettable and exhilarating experience
You would spend time together chatting around a campfire about your thoughts on the Abyss; the light flickering through the trees and casting it's warm glow upon what is sure to be a beautiful night
Bondrewd sometimes feels bad about taking a person he loves to dangerous places. That's why he worries when he takes his darling to other places that aren't Ido Front
An intellectual conversation in Ido Front would also suit his interest
After some wandering, how about a cup of tea? The tea itself is from Iruburu, and you can sit with it in the area known as "The Garden of the Flowers." There you will see a lot of beautiful and various plants, and even creatures of the Abyss that are not too dangerous

Made in Abyss Thoughts so far:
So I am finishing up volume 2 today.
VOL 1: Thought dump:
*some asshole who has only ever watched hunter x hunter* (me! I'm some asshole) This is giving some serious Gon Freecss vibes.
Seriously.
I love the use of ladders and the seats being attached to the walls. it makes use of horizontal space: shows the island is cramped. it means the seats would have to be secured and it shows that the students are getting used to climbing and checking their spaces on a day to day basis.
so you learn these kids: probably aren't super afraid of heights, they can be aware of their space, have strong hands and arms, can handle changes in wind or would at least be taught what to do. there is so much i am learning from this one little pic. <3 <3
balloons make sense - you're probably sending multiple messages and it would make sense to have air drafts carry stuff up ... but like it doesn't seem to be a volcano so what is producing the drafts?
the maw on the crimson splitjaw <3 <3 i am in looooove. imagine all the rocks those teeth could smash. bones? pffft no problem.
Riko's clothes - the patches and layers - the orphanage probably doesn't get a lot of funding. (though it is participating in the post-industrialized use of child labor). wonder where that would be going ... or what happens to items that are found by kids. aside from kids getting punished for pilfering.
ok for real - anyone else getting the inferno vibes? am i going to need to bust out dante for this? (i did. i did bust out dante. i have milton on stand-by. but we're gonna leave the bible outta this.)
Other thoughts: this culture does not care who you are or how pregnant. nudity is taboo but not like outwardly immediately sexualized - it's an argument that this could be a shame-based social economy.
death is a part of life and expected - to the point that it is considered celebrated in some cases.
So what does this mean? White whistles are trusted members of their communities. but also their lives are expendable in regards to what the Powers That Be (PTB) require? (Eg: the unheard bell arc we're being told about. Riko's birth.) It doesn't feel like respect but you know ... perspective.
how much information that is received from the Abyss is actually made public? Even the information from white whistles?
how much of what is received from Black or White whistles is edited/redacted/incinerated/otherwise censored? Why would this be done?
Like, I ask this because Riko had to have special permission to view the letter from her own mother. and was accused of stealing something that rightfully - belonged to her.
*heart-eyes motherfucker*

Hi those were my tags and YEAH you’re totally right about the fearmongering. I was mostly thinking about the manga, which is a very uncomfortable read. (The story is what keeps me hooked.) The anime, though? You’re totally right about there being not even two minutes of questionable content. I can recall probably every scene, and it’s mostly just neutral, censored nudity, if it makes sense. Like, this character is bleeding and threw up and needs to be stripped down for medical attention and to prevent rashes. We don’t see any bits. It’s odd at first but it feels very clinical, if that makes sense.
For people to call it CP does not make the show seem bad. What that line of thinking does is devalue the actual abuse of children. CSEM is reprehensible in part because the child at the center of it is a living, breathing soul who had a life beforehand and now has a lifetime of pain and trauma ahead of them. CSEM destroys the innocent. Drawings, written works, animation, all that stuff, does not involve a real, living victim. It may be uncomfortable, but there’s no actual person getting hurt in Made in Abyss, or in questionable fanfiction, or any fiction. (There’s a case to be made about live action works and how that impacts actors but that’s another can of beans.)
The actual show of Made in Abyss is a beautiful story about a very dire coming of age journey that people only ever talk about negatively. I actually made a giant video essay on why I love it so much. The show handles its mysteries, worldbuilding, and characters in such a tightly written fashion. There’s no element that’s dropped. There’s always a connection to a prior element that was introduced. Riko thinking she broke her arm as she ran away from the Crimson Splitjaw wasn’t a throwaway line. It was foreshadowing.
The show is brutal and uncomfortable in the best way. A couple of 12 year olds going down into a dangerous cavern aren’t going to come out unscathed. This feels like an adult’s perspective on all the imaginary adventures you’d want to go on as a kid. It’s bleak. It’s bloody. But it’s so full of heart and emotion and optimism. It balances it’s dark moments with its light ones.
I cried while watching the show. It’s so good at making you feel attached to these characters. The world is so interesting and it keeps me wanting more. It fills the viewer with such a grand sense of adventure to the point I’ll rewatch the opening sequence of the first season just for that kick.
It’s a beautiful show that people have the wrong impression of.

Inktober Day 10, prompt “Gigantic”. Here’s Riko, standing her ground against the Crimson Splitjaw in a tense moment before Reg wakes up and speedily removes her from harms way. That girls got some serious courage and I love her, and that cool monster, so so much.

The ethereal flames that a Kitsune can create, either if their transformative or Healing Magicks utilize it, or once they have their sixth tail, emit light similar to UV light. It has all the visual effects of UV light, allowing things that are only visible under UV to be seen, without any of the health risks.
Kyuushi’s skin is clear, for the most part, but she does have a few tattoos. The most important one, to her, and the first she ever got was of her Mother, eyes closed, with a soft smile. The tattoo itself is not all that big, and it’s normally hidden under her hair due to being at the base of her neck, on her back (between the top of her shoulders). She’s decided that, if she ever gets to see what her Father actually looks like, she will have his face added over and behind her Mother’s, with a similar expression, so that they can be together again in a way.
She has one other tattoo, one across her upper back along the shoulders mostly, which is a field of beautiful white flowers across a lightly hilled landscape. At the center of which stands a mound with an old, broken, rusted device shaped like a pickaxe in the distance. This is a visual of the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience in the Fourth Layer of the Abyss below Orth.
However, she does have a number of UV tattoos that are normally invisible. Most notable of which being an addition to the tattoo of the Garden across her upper back, which when lit with UV Light or by her Ethereal Flames, will show the field lit aflame. Having witnessed one of the hands of the Sovereign of Dawn torch the field due to an infestation.
The rest of these invisible tattoos she has are of individual things which are to mark parts of her life. For the most part, they’re still just along her back, running the space between the tattoo of the Garden, and where the root of her tails grows from the small of her back.
Her first two of which, are of a Crimson Splitjaw and an Orbpiercer from the Abyss, facing opposite directions. Acting as a sort of border between the tattoo of the Garden and everything else, and marking her encounters with the two beasts. Beneath them, taking up most of the space, is the Rot Fox from the Abyss of Tevyat. The mass beast looming over a smaller figure, the anthromorphic Fox beast made of blood that is Kyuushi’s Blood Demon Art from the Realm of the Hashira. This beast has it’s clawed hands together, holding a heart, marking the foul moment she was protected by a Fox beast and then possessed by it, forced to consume a Mage’s heart. To the left and right of these two beastly features are silhouettes of herself, which are supposed to be representative of being able to multiply herself in the Realm of Heroes with her Quirk.
The left and right sides of her back, below her waist and above her hips, is the last blank space on her back.
The way these UV tattoos are spread out, the smaller spaces between them have her blue ethereal flames filling the gap. She adds more to these tattoos throughout her life, as more remarkable moments occur. Going to a Mythos tattoo parlor on the outskirts of a nearby city that she frequents for groceries and such.

It seriously cannot be overstated how important Made in Abyss’ atmosphere is to its success as an anime. The first episode lets us soak in the jaw-dropping background art and arresting vistas one stunning, immaculately detailed nature shot at a time, as it gives us time to watch Riko wander around and explore with lively, pleasantly fluid character animation. Then the crimson splitjaw attacks, and he’s rendered in this utterly bananas sketchy style like he’s less of a physical creature and more of an amorphous embodiment of chaos rippling with hunger as it rages through the landscape. His pursuit is frenetic and terrifying, which makes the oomph of Regu’s rescue laser all the more epic. Then we get to climb up to the city itself, and the background art gets even more stunning as it paints every last cliff and crevasse in lush, expansive detail that instantly makes it feel like a lived-in world. And all the while, Kevin Penkin’s ethereal score is instilling us with a palpable sense of spiritual awe at how damn beautiful everything is. This show is fucking gorgeous, and it makes us completely understand the allure of the Abyss itself. Something so majestic, so mysterious, so rich with things to explore and unfathomable sights to see... how could we not want to plunge deep into its depths and see what awaits below?

>Reg is the main character
>He makes snarky comments all the time
>Movie starts with him injured after escaping from Bondrewd’s evil science laboratory
>Riko shelters him in the orphanage (she’s played by the most attractive actress currently relevant in hollywood)
>Kiyui gets sick and the only cure is a plant that grows deep in the abyss
>Reg and Riko leave to get the plant
>CGI fight against abyss policemen and their flying robot drones
>Reg indiscriminately uses his laser beams to kill the policemen
>He also makes a spiderman reference while swinging around with his arms
>Escape by luring Crimson Splitjaw to fight the police
>Some generic romance subplot between Reg and Riko
>Riko gets injured at some point and the power of love unlocks a new ability in Reg and he can heal her with his robot powers now
>It is now revealed that Riko’s mom was the scientist who let him escape from Bondrewd’s lab before the movie started and she was killed by Bondrewd afterwards
>Now they have to beat Bondrewd to get to the cure for Kiyui
>Bondrewd wanted Reg’s power to make a robot that will conquer Orth for him
>He has succeeded in making Evil Reg. Reg and Evil Reg have a CGI “the bad guy has the same powers” fight
>Reg wins because of love, and surprise appearance by Nanachi who was a prisoner in the facility
>Bondrewd reveals that he wanted to rule Orth to use the resources to find a cure for his biological daughter Prushka who is also sick
>Reg and Riko get the plant and it cures both Kiyui and Prushka
>Nanachi stays behind to help Bondrewd see the error of his ways
>Reg, Riko, Kiyui, and Prushka all live happily ever after in Orth

Ahh, at least Reg has some sense! It’s now imperative that they find some safe place to hide out. Back in the tunnels they just came from, perhaps? It simply must be the case that the Pancake Squirrels are the only creatures small enough to fit inside them. Otherwise, why would their burrows be that size?
Out of all the things that could have happened, I think a Crimson Splitjaw appearing is just about the worst case scenario.
This one has a nostalgic gash in the side of its head.
This.... is an old friend.
