The desert horizon was bathed in shades of red and orange as the sun hung low in the sky. The desert was brutal during the day yet the two men pushed on., day after day after day. Crickets had begun to chirp., the sound mixing with the scuff of hoofs on the hard packed dirt and sand beneath and braying of the horses to create an almost comforting atmosphere. Minds were free to wander–as were eyes.

Jason Todd pulled his bandana off his neck to wipe at his brow., the leather of his gloves caked in a layer of dust from the long day’s ride. Beside him., Cassidy Whitlock nudged his horse forward. The movement caught his eye., as did the way the setting sun caught his sandy blonde hair that made it look like spun gold. He moved his hand up., pretending to adjust his hat as he stole a glance:; innocent., nothing more than a quick look.

‘A quick look’ was what he told himself., even as his blue eyes lingered on the way Cassidy’s shirt clung to his sweat-dampened skin.

It had been weeks since they’d started riding together., running after a bounty that only seemed to get further and further away with every day that passed. There was nothing stopping Jason from cutting ties and just heading back east to Gotham., where all his troubles at least had familiar names–nothing physical at least. Yet there was still something that always made him disregard any thoughts of packing up and going his own way., no matter how many times the thought crossed his mind.

Maybe it was the way Cassidy smiled:: a slow., lazy type of grin that gave him a warm feeling even in the cold dead of the desert night. Or maybe it was the way he could feel the other’s eyes on him when he had to’ve thought Jason didn’t notice., like he wanted to say something but could figure out exactly how. Or maybe it was just the silent comfort of having someone there., someone who didn’t need to spend their time talking., content with taking in the silence and the way their environment filled it itself.

“You gonna keep gawkin’., or do y’plan on helpin’ me mind somewhere we can set up camp?” Cassidy’s drawl cut through the quiet like a knife., his heavy southern accent a mix of teasing and warmth.

Jason scowled., the red of his bandanna and the warm hue that the sunset painted around them obscuring the flush that began to creep up his neck. “Just making sure you don’t fall off your horse., you’ve been swaying like a drunk for the past mile., at least.,” he scoffed., holding his usual gruffness.

Cassidy simply chuckled., the sound low and rich. “Guess you’re my safety net., huh?”

He grunted., lightly driving in heel into his horse’s flank to take the lead. He knew better than anyone that Cassidy’s nonchalant nature belied his solidity. He was more than capable., carrying his own weight and then some. It wasn’t subtle the way he looked like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders at times. Jason had seen it in the way he’d handled himself during a shootout:; steady., unflinching. Seen it in the way he’d patched him up., calloused hands gentle yet sure in his actions.

When they finally set up camp near a cluster of tall cacti., the sun had dipped below the horizon line., leaving only a few more fleeting sun rays behind. Their bedrolls were rolled out., the ground firm beneath them. It wasn’t so uncomfortable anymore–especially after a few weeks without a town in sight. Their bodies had adjusted by now., even if they did still crave the worn mattresses of a cheap inn.

Jason set to lighting a fire to fight off the frigid chill of the encroaching night., Cassidy fishing through his saddlebags for a tin of meat and a bottle of whiskey. He walked back over just as the fire stabilized., plopping down right beside Jason., offering the bottle to him.

“Dinner of champions,” he muttered., accepting the whiskey and immediately bringing it to his lips.

“Better than nothin’,” Cassidy replied., leaning back against a nearby rock. The firelight painted his features in warm tones., just as the sunset had minutes ago. Highlighting the faint lines at the corners of his eyes and the scruff along his jaw.

Jason tipped the bottle back., letting the burn of the alcohol settle in his chest. “You alway live like this? Sleeping under the stars., chasing bounties., eating half-heated canned food?”

Cassidy shrugged. “I’ve done it a long while. It’s a simple enough life.”

“Sounds lonely.” Jason propped his elbows up on his knees., his gaze focused on the flames dancing in front of them. He handed back the bottle without averting his eyes. Cassidy took it., turning the amber bottle in his hands before taking a swig of his own.

“Sometimes,” he cocked his head to the side., turning it to look at Jason with those hazel eyes that always seemed to hide so much beneath their surface., “but you know all about that., don’tcha?”

Jason tensed., his heart rate picked up to a steady thrumming in his chest. “What’s that s’pposed to mean?” He looked back at Cassidy., brows furrowed.

“Jus’...” Cassidy held his gaze., unflinching., “whatever brought you out here., from one of them big cities… you ain’t gotta carry it on yer own anymore. You don’t gotta keep running.”

Jason bristled at the assurance., Cassidy’s words hitting him a bit too close to his heart. “You don’t know a thing about me.” It came out sharper than he intended., but he held firm. It was better than admitting Cassidy was right–that he had wormed his way into the deepest recesses of his mind and wouldn’t leave no matter what he did.

“Maybe I don’t.,” he nodded., “but I’ve seen that look in yer eye enough to recognize someone who doesn’t think they deserve what they want.,” his voice was softer now., almost like he was talking about himself. Their shoulders brushed as Jason shifted., drawing his attention to just how close they were to one another.

The fire crackled between them., filling the silence., and for a moment they just stared at one another. Jason wanted so badly to argue., to push Cassidy away and retreat to his bedroll., but the truth of it all seemed to lodge itself into his throat blocking any and all retorts he could come up with.

“You think you got me all figured out., huh?” He finally muttered., shaking his head slightly.

Cassidy just smiled. That same slow., lazy smile he’d had since Jason met him. “Not all of you., but I’m getting there.” He offered the bottle of whiskey back to Jason once again., their fingers brushing slightly as he took it. The contact wasn’t much., just the barest brush of skin., yet it still sent a jolt through them both.

Jason took another drink., his lips lingering on the glass as his mind wandered to the fact that Cassidy had drunk from it as well. An indirect kiss of sorts:; passing the bottle back and forth., lips touching the same surface. “You keep looking at me like that., and we’re gonna have a problem…” he grunted., the burn from the drink causing his voice to roughen.

Cassidy’s smile only widened., a chuckle leaving his lips. “Maybe I like a little trouble.”

Jason’s body moved before he had time to even think it through–he closed the distance between them., his lips crashing against Cassidy’s like a wave against a rock face. It was messy., desperate., clearly a result of every lingering look and wandering thought moving to the foreground all at once. It was all heat and raw., unrestrained want.

Cassidy., while momentarily stunned., responded in kind., reciprocating the kiss with equal enthusiasm. His lips were chapped., likely a result of the dry desert air and need to conserve water supplies. His hand moved to cup Jason’s jaw., his nails lightly dragging along the skin there. Everything else seemed to fade in that moment.

When they finally broke apart their breathing was heavy., gasping for air as if they’d been drowning in one another. Jason., though reluctant to open his eyes at first., couldn’t help but stare at how Cassidy’s eyes somehow seemed brighter than he’d ever seen., even in the shadows cast by the firelight.

“Guess I really am in trouble,” Cassidy joked., his lips curling into a smile that could only be described as pure. Pure happiness., pure love.

And damn him if Jason didn’t want to see that smile for the rest of his life.

Within the borders of the town of New Royston, Connecticut, one’s net worth proportionally affects their physical size. Sometime in the early 2000s, high school sophomore Gio Violett, a 20-foot-tall giant recently recovering from a near-death experience, meets Cricket Collins, an 11-inch-tall freshman who’s been living on his own since his parents left town with the intent to save up enough money to bring him with them. Together, the two of them resolve to try to break the spell over New Royston, but a variety of adversaries, from supernatural forces to the town’s political machines, stand in their way.

Kilroy, a pacifist hippalektryon, lives with his herd in the area around the Oracle, a great stone hall of unknown origin that magically shifts itself to create wondrous stained glass windows dyed with different types of magic. Kilroy himself is featured in one of these windows jamming his horn into the gut of some unknown, pitch-black creature. One day, an attempt from Kilroy to avoid his violent, prophesied fate goes wrong just as he runs straight into Mar, the creature from the window. Mar helps heal Kilroy’s injury and Kilroy, shocked by his would-be adversary’s kindness, vows to find a way to avoid their mutually-destructive destiny.

Hello! This is my second post for @hwsasiaweek ! …And it’s just a repost! Yaaaaaayyyy!

But yeah, I thought this story was perfect for Day 3: Folklore/Legends/Myths. This one stars Japan, my country!

I was planning to get another third fic out for this event, and I decided that until then I could just repost this old thing I wrote as part of a compilation. Hopefully it still holds up. Hopefully.

Alt-talia: Child of The Soil

Young Kiku loved exploring the mountains outside Asuka.

Here, the gods lived. It was the spirits’ domain, where they allowed the young boy to use as his playground; while he was already centuries old, he still explored it with innocent wonder befitting his eight-year-old appearance, but with a hint of familiarity. After all, this island’s forests were, in a way, his element as well.

They knew who he really was; the young personification of Yamato. Even without telling them, they knew. The spirits and gods themselves rarely, if ever, presented themselves directly to him, but he could feel their presence in the air among the familiar cries of insects, sometimes even their whispers to him.

He made his way to a less wooded, grassy clearing; the longest grasses, the types used by the people of Asuka to thatch roofs, were long enough for the little boy to disappear into.

It was then he noticed what seemed to be a slender, scaly tail poking out of the grasses.

Then, something started... rolling? Yes, rolling, and disappeared into the grass.

“Huh?”

Curious, the young boy trailed the mysterious creature as it made its way through the overgrown grass, trying not to rustle the grass too loudly or lose track of it.

Finally, the creature rolled towards a meadow where the grass was shorter in front of raised ground, and unfurled itself. From behind the grass, he observed it; it was a shaku* long… snake? But not just any snake; one with a strangely broad, almost flat midsection, its thin neck sticking out from one side and its tail out the other.

It was somewhat dopey-looking, yet he felt drawn to the strange creature, though he didn’t know why. It seemed strangely… familiar.

“Hello there?”

Kiku made a few small steps out of the tall grass, and just when he was over it, the snake bunched up like an inchworm, and…

It jumped.

The snake jumped up, several times his height, over the ledge.

His jaw dropped, aghast, stumbling back, almost falling back into the tall grass.

Then, it briefly stopped, looking back at him. It let out a high pitched “Chiii!” before crawling into the tall grass above.

“…Nozuchi?”

That was all he could whisper.

Was that…

That day, among the ringing melodies of Suzumushi crickets, Yamato thought he had met the grass spirit.

Kiku didn’t know if he had imagined what happened that day.

Since that day, it - maybe goddess, maybe spirit, maybe mundane creature - and how it had looked back at him, as if asking him to find it, remained at the back of his mind. Its name changed over the years, as did what he believed its identity to be. However, eventually, only a few villagers shared his knowledge of the snake anymore.

Until, over a millennia later, a certain children’s book featured a hunt for that same creature, and as unreliable as his distant childhood memories could be, the memory returned to him clear as day.

And today, in his new Third-Generation Nissan Datsun Sunny as kayōkyoku and New Music played on the radio, his spirits moderately high from fresh economic growth, he had returned to that same place where he thought he had that encounter over a millennia before.

A small crowd had gathered there, mainly families, mothers and fathers holding lunches and cages, children with butterfly nets bragging about how they would be the first to catch the coveted snake. Some people looked at him in puzzlement, his lack of any children, girlfriend, or even friends making him very conspicuous among the gathering.

The place had changed quite a lot, but in some ways, it was still as it had always been. However, while it, of course, was of more significance to him than any other random mountain, forest, or village would be, he had far moved past these mountains, or Asuka, a long time ago, ultimately just one past home out of many. And it wasn’t even his first at that, though his earliest memories were almost entirely lost to the ether. So yeah, if any of you are familiar with the Pokémon Dunsparce, this is what it’s based on! I wanted to share our little snek with the world.

The tsuchinoko is a Japanese cryptid that people often report sightings of but no one has truly found. I looked into it, and apparently there have been records of tsuchinoko-like creatures since as early as the Jomon period. In the Kojiki, they are said to be field/grass kami. So I decided that Japan should encounter it a bit before the Kojiki was written, in the Asuka period.

Apparently, they only became widely known to the rest of Japan in the 70s, after a book about tsuchinoko hunting was published, and it truly became a nationwide fascination when a manga about tsuchinoko was published. So it seems to have been this regional thing that became part of the wider folklore. But it truly has been with Japan since the very beginning.
