"[President] Coolidge chose to celebrate July 4 [1927] -- which also happened to be his fifty-fifth birthday -- by remaining in South Dakota, where he was having the time of his life. In recognition of all the publicity he was generating with his trip, the state of South Dakota presented him on his birthday with a cowboy outfit and horse. Named Kit, the horse was charitably described as 'spirited.' It was in fact all but untamed. The President, who was by no means a horseman was prudently kept well away from it. Instead his delighted attention was focused on his other main present -- a cowboy outfit consisting of a ten-gallon hat, bright red shirt, capacious blue neckerchief, chaps, boots, and spurs. Coolidge retired to put it all on and emerged clankingly, and a little clumsily, in the full regalia a few minutes later. He looked ridiculous, but very proud, and posed happily for photographers, who could not believe their luck. 'Here was one of the great comic scenes in American history,' wrote Robert Benchley in The New Yorker that week.
Coolidge loved that outfit and wore it for the rest of the summer whenever he could. According to lodge staff, he often changed into it in the evening after his more formal day's duties were done, and for a few hours ceased to be the most important man in America and instead was just a happy cowpoke."
-- Bill Bryson, on President Calvin Coolidge's genuine love for an utterly goofy cowboy outfit given to him as a birthday gift during a vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota in July 1927, recounted in Bryson's book One Summer: America, 1927 (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO).

On a recent afternoon in Corriganville Park, an old movie-set ranch in the rocky foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in Southern California’s Simi Valley, with her blonde bouffant teased to previously uncharted dimensions, a spiked headdress in the shape of a bursting nebula, Wonder Woman–esque wrist cuffs, and bulbous Proenza Schouler open-toe shoes, Jennifer Coolidge looked very much the part of a sci-fi superheroine. She brought to mind such greats as Jane Fonda in Barbarella, Zsa Zsa Gabor in Queen of Outer Space, and First Mate Piggy in “Pigs in Space,” the cult Muppets space opera.
Coolidge, who this year swept the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards for her portrayal of a heedless hotel habitué on The White Lotus, was engaged in a winner-takes-all slugfest with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directing duo known as Daniels, whose multiverse epic, Everything Everywhere All at Once, was the most nominated film at this year’s Academy Awards. It was a surreal scene. Coolidge was protecting Earth from a giant extraterrestrial fashion lobster with monstrous claws, played by Scheinert, but instead of “Pow!” and “Whack!” their interaction was more like “Pow” and…“Whack?”
“I think the best thing to do is to take this,” said Kwan, handing Coolidge a rhinestone-encrusted metal scepter before ducking back behind the camera. “Act like you’re going to stab him.” Coolidge squinted her eyes, seemingly confused about the nature of her superpowers. “Oh, you mean I’m supposed to be annihilating him? That’s cool, I guess,” she said. She proceeded to gently prod Scheinert, who appeared to barely feel the might of her wrath under the spiked sleeves of his crustacean-couture ensemble. Glancing back and forth between his camera’s viewfinder and the low-stakes combat unfolding before him, Kwan furrowed his brow. “You’re being shocked by the scepter,” he explained to Scheinert. Trying not to laugh, he added, “And maybe, kind of, enjoying it.” Scheinert put his claws on his hips, nodding his head in agreement, his whiskerlike antennae flopping in the air. As if on cue, Coolidge prodded him once again, this time more forcefully, sending Scheinert into an exaggerated Looney Tunes–like convulsion, followed by suggestive gyrations reminiscent of a K-Pop boy-bander.
Coolidge let out a loud cackle. “I can’t kill him now,” she said, her face awash with childlike amusement. When the camera clicks paused, Scheinert peeled off his Robyn Lynch balaclava. Shirley Kurata, Daniels’ costume designer, began removing his arthropod exterior. “What is it about lobster claws that I’m so attracted to?” Coolidge wondered. She then turned her attention to surveying the clothing racks filled with tubular disc dresses, new-wave hats shaped like lampshades, and metallic-hued space cowboy boots. “Oh, so this is what we’re going to be doing today,” she said, her voice tinged with bewildered excitement. “I look pretty evil. They seem to like me in villain outfits a lot.”
...
For their latest romp, the directors said there was no question that Coolidge had to be the A-list star of this B-movie shoot, though they had never worked with the actor and their only in-person interaction with her was a brief hello at the Critics Choice Awards in January. “But of all the people who are having a moment right now, she felt like someone exciting to put on the cover of a magazine,” Kwan said. Thanks to her Rubenesque figure, flowing blonde locks, bee-stung pout, and million-dollar smize, Coolidge certainly stands out in everything she’s in, whether she’s playing a dim-witted nail tech in Legally Blonde, a desperate housewife having a lesbian affair with her poodle’s trainer in Best in Show, a sultry suburban MILF in American Pie, a trigger-happy mother-in-law to Jennifer Lopez’s bride-to-be in Shotgun Wedding, or, most recently, a psychic TV medium in Netflix’s We Have a Ghost.
More than anything, Scheinert explained, the directors appreciate a stacked résumé. “I’m prejudiced against young people,” he said. “I have problems with our youth-obsessed culture and beauty standards, so anytime we can shake things up a little, I’m all for it.” Kwan and Scheinert, who are both 35, said working with Michelle Yeoh, 60, Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, and now Coolidge, 61, allows them to pick up “different strategies for existing in this industry,” almost as if by osmosis. “We still feel like just babies,” Kwan said.
On that point, Coolidge was in firm agreement. “The film business tires people out. But I swear to god, I felt like I was getting together with little kids,” she said of her day with the directors. “They were like these sort of child prodigies who are super, super smart and just super creative. I’ve never been asked to do a shoot like this: I have weapons, take down small cities, pick up cars and throw them. I don’t know if I will ever be this surprised again. It was one of the best things I have ever been involved in.”
Like the rest of the world, Kwan and Scheinert swooned over Coolidge’s performance as Tanya in The White Lotus. They were mesmerized as she blasted her way to a clumsy demise on a megayacht chartered by the fearsome Fab Five of Sicily in the final episode of the show’s second season. One of Tanya’s lines is now the stuff of meme legend: “These gays, they’re trying to murder me!”
Speaking about Tanya, but also possibly referring to her own trajectory, Coolidge said: “I feel bad for her, because she didn’t know what she was made of. She didn’t have that kind of faith in herself. Sometimes these scary things happen in life. And then you find out, in like two seconds, that you are a survivor and that you can really pull through for yourself, sometimes in a way that you never believed you could.” Then, with inimitable comic timing, she pitched her raspy voice ever so slightly so it sounded like her scatterbrained character on The White Lotus: “But then, of course, it didn’t quite end up going my way in the end, did it?”

everything is almost done for my christmas campaign...!!! i just need to finish the second map (and my younger sibling needs to tell me their chara's stats and name so i can finish their chara sheet). all that i have done under the cut!!!
a magical creature i plan for my younger sibling to discover. they'll mix their potions they collect with eggnog and it'll create this. i'll lay down clues for them to get there. they love frogs. i hope they'll love them....
my mom's stat sheet. she's a nonbinary mouse who lives in the walls of the toy factory and helps do the tiny details on the toys b/c they're so small.
my twin's stat sheet. she's a cowboy xmas elf. teaches the reindeer. i haven't come up with a unique element/surprise for her and her character yet... hmm. i need to think of something. maybe his boots are magical? or the spurs are? one of those things gives her some kind of ability? i shall Think.
the big bad. the main antagonist. us postal worker trying to catch the elves and prove they're real. yes, she's like jennifer coolidge but insanely tall and twiggy and evil.
the right hand man of the big bad. he's pretending to be an xmas elf helping them on the heist but he's actually a leprechaun. yennifer convinced him to help catch the elves in exchange for all of the valuables at the mail recovery center. he dyed his hair white to hide his ginger hair color. i gotta actually add the white dye stain to his hands again so that that visual clue is there.
an npc purely made b/c my mom is a mouse. the cat will chase my mom (and the other charas but espec my mom) in the maze room. no stat sheet for the cat b/c she's an animal.
the naughty/nice meter. very loosely inspired by the call of the cthulu insanity mechanic.
each number will be covered and they'll only learn the powers/consequences of each one when one of them gets to that number. so hopefully that'll be exciting and scary. my hope is this meter will encourage them to help each other and really encourage that christmas spirit of togetherness; espec b/c one of the easiest ways to get back to the middle of the meter is by a friend giving you "merry tokens" (the equiv of what kids on bikes' "adversity token" is). this campaign is built around this naughty/nice mechanic so i hope it's a fun but brutal power crawl.
as i mentioned in my prev post, it's also meant to help evoke the feeling of living in the north pole. which i have imagined as like an ethnoreligion culture. a place that highly values jolliness (or the facade of jolliness) and selflessness and condemns individualistic and conniving traits like sneaking and fighting. and the pressure to handle things in only certain ways even if certain scenarios can't be dealt with that way (or dealt with effectively).
first map room is the maze room. maze of unopened mail in big cardboard boxes. stamp the cat and roombas will be chasing them around here. possibly yennifer, too.
i haven't finished this second map yet but it's going to be the sorting and auction room. the four tables on the left are for the four categories MRCs actually follow: valuables above $25 with a bar code, valuables above $25 with no bar code, under $25s, and letters. the middle thing is the unfinished stage. where auctions for the valuables are streamed (technically the mail recovery center doesn't do the auctions themselves and gives them to a third party to do so but it's funnier if it's happening in the building b/c it's a live stream and the players gotta avoid being seen). the right three tables are the opened but unsorted tables. i'll add piles of stuff on all the tables and items on the stage to make it more clear what goes where.
there isn't an auction going on currently b/c the MRC is closed when this takes place but the live stream will be on still b/c--fun!
and that's it so far!!!!!!
i'll formally release all of these materials once i've run the campaign myself (in case any tweaks need to be made after, essentially, play testing). and i need to write up the, like, DM guide. for instructions on how to run it and dialogue and what not.
i'm very proud of how it's all coming together!!!! it's going to be so fun to run!

Midnight Cowboy (4K restored) at The Coolidge
The Coolidge in Brookline is playing the 1969 classic Rated X film, #MidnightCowboy now through next Wednesday, July 19th.
Looking for something to do and want to get out of the house? The Coolidge Theater in Brookline is playing Midnight Cowboy. The film starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman was both a critical and commercial success when it first came out in 1969. Its “homosexual frame of reference” contributed to its X-rating, making it the first film with such a rating to receive the best picture…

Do you think Tom has a shot at a SAG for Loki? Theoretically if he gets it he’ll be getting it over one of the succession actors and I can’t even imagine how twitter will react to that 😭😭
Personally I feel like he has a better shot at the globes if he’s submitted.
SAG is such a tricky call. There are a number of things at play -- Succession is a juggernaut in the male actor category. I guess The Morning Show will get something, at least one nom. But there's also The Handmaid's Tale, which possibly won't get anything for its men, but will definitely be in the ensemble category, so you never know.
Add to that the fact that there's no separate supporting actor category, as well as the fact that it's a hard 5 nominees (no category expansion), and you get a huge crowd competing.
There's also the issue of what the competition will be -- there are shows where their categories aren't 100% confirmed, like The White Lotus, which I think is going for Limited/Anthology Series, but also has a second season and may have one returning actor (Jennifer Coolidge), so do they accept it as Limited, or do they put it in Drama?
And, for the 'genre' category, where does Hawkeye go? Is it a drama series or limited? FatWS was thought to be limited, but then ended up getting submitted as a drama, and it still qualifies for SAG this year (though WV doesn't). Does Squid Game have enough individual acting support? I can see it getting an ensemble nom. There's also Cowboy Bebop coming out on Netflix.
Add in a potential nominee like Billy Porter, and it's a reaaaallllllly crowded race.
On the other hand, he's a well-known name, and the SAG nominators are a really diverse group of not just actors, but also the AFTRA part (newscasters, etc), and he's a well-known name and character. So people might just vote because they know the name. 🤷♀️
All of which is a long way of saying, I thinks he's on the bubble. Like, I could see him being in 6th place in the nominees category, which would be fine for the Emmys, but not SAG, which only takes the top five.
Meanwhile, by the time the Emmys roll around, there will be even more competition.

Still Single / Heathen Disco 2020 End of Year Recap
I guess I’m back! I started gingerly dipping back over into Tumblr to publish some reviews as a means of cutting through all the bondage photos and anime screencaps and people still living on Tumblrs (shout out to anyone still Tumblin', it's alright). I also redoubled my efforts to do great radio shows, and that seems to bother some of you enough to unsubscribe, but I'm feeling great about all that. If you wanna hear those shows, you can go to Mixcloud and listen to your hearts' content. Those 5-6 reviews on here actually turned up worthwhile music in my PO box, so thanks to those who submitted.
This was gonna be the year I reintroduced myself to the world. Don't make plans like that. Things are a lot better now than I thought they'd be, and the time I burnt up on movies and self-reflection this year was probably more needed than another DJ gig or whatever. Radio sustained me, I will freely admit, and finding records out in the wild once shops reopened was really killer too.

Which Presidential couple's story would make the best romantic comedy?
This is such a great question, and I was spending quite a bit of time going over the Presidential marriages while debating myself about the right answer. But it suddenly hit me that the perfect answer is Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace Goodhue Coolidge. They were extremely quirky as individuals and, as a couple, there are many unique stories about the Coolidges and their marriage. As I've written on a couple occasions in the past, Calvin Coolidge was a really weird dude (he had a mechanical horse in the White House for exercise and was not above dressing up as or acting like a cowboy when using it!), and Grace was eccentric (she had a pet raccoon named Rebecca in the White House) and very interesting in her own right. Together, they were quite a match.
As William A. DeGregorio wrote in The Complete Book of U.S. Presidents, "While watering flowers outside the school [she was working at in Northampton, Massachusetts] one day in 1903, [Grace] happened to look up at the open window of Robert N. Weir's boardinghouse and caught a glimpse of [Calvin] Coolidge, shaving in front of a mirror, with nothing on but long underwear and a hat. She burst out laughing at the sight; he heard the noise and turned to look at her. It was their first meeting."
And as the New York Times reported in a 1935 review of Mrs. Coolidge's biography of President Coolidge:
Soon after Calvin Coolidge was married, he took to his bride fifty-two pairs of socks in need of mending. "When I inquired if their wearer had married me to get his stockings darned, he replied quite seriously, 'No, but I find it mighty handy,'" Mrs. Grace Coolidge writes.
It seems like you could get a lot of comedic mileage out of their relationship. There are, without a doubt, significantly more photos of Grace Coolidge laughing or smiling than all of the First Ladies that preceded her (and a good number of those who followed her) combined.

13 destinations for African-American history and culture
Visit these significant sites of memory and perseverance across the country.
In 1860, the schooner Clotilda—the last slave ship to bring African captives to the American South—arrived at the Alabama coast, its hold containing 110 people smuggled into the U.S. more than 50 years after importing slaves was outlawed. After an intensive yearlong search, supported by the National Geographic Society, marine archaeologists have located the Clotilda. Few slave vessels have ever been found, so this groundbreaking discovery unlocks a mystery that many thought lost to history. (Read more about finding Clotilda.)
Such breakthroughs help preserve our shared heritage and tell the stories of the estimated 389,000 Africans delivered into bondage in mainland America from the early 1600s to 1860. For some descendants of slaves, artifacts such as the Clotilda represent a tangible connection to their ancestors. For travelers, such discoveries can present an opportunity to learn more about U.S. history.
“The African-American experience is the lens through which we understand what it is to be an American,” writes Lonnie G. Bunch III, the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The national collection in Washington, D.C., is just one of many diverse museums and monuments across the country that help visitors connect to significant moments in black history and to learn about the country’s legacy of racial injustice. Here are 13 destinations for discovering more about African-American history and culture.
National Museum of African American History and Culture
Despite initial funds provided in 1915 by black Civil War veterans and a signed Public Resolution from President Calvin Coolidge in 1929 establishing a commission to plan its construction, it wasn’t until legislation signed by then President George W. Bush in 2003 that the museum had the authorization it needed to be created on the National Mall. Since the museum opened in fall 2016, visitors will be able to explore more than 400 years of artifacts and historical information detailing the African American experience. (Read more about the museum.)
Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
Established in 1965, this Detroit museum holds the world’s largest permanent collection of African-American culture. Among the more than 35,000 artifacts, find interactive kids stations, displays on trailblazers in science and engineering, and stained-glass windows by Samuel A. Hodge that depict stories of notable African Americans from dancers to civil rights activists. The annual three-day African World Festival held in August celebrates the cultures of the diaspora with hosts free performances by gospel legends such as the Clark Sisters, African drummers, and dance troupes.
Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum in Detroit, Michigan
The Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, the first squadron of back military airmen, weren’t considered equals in the eyes of the law but that didn't stop them from defending the country. The museum details their training and the role they played in desegregating the military. Also find monuments to the men who served as “Red Tails” all over the country, including a National Park Service site in Tuskegee, Alabama, in their honor.
National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama — Informally called the lynching memorial, the first U.S. commemoration of the thousands of men, women, and children who were murdered—primarily because of the color of their skin—opened in Montgomery in April 2018. This Alabama site holds 805 hanging, steel rectangles in the shape of coffins, each representing one of the U.S. counties where a documented lynching took place, as reported by legal advocacy nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative. Steps away, visitors may explore the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, which opened on the same day and displays the history of racism in America—beginning with slavery before examining lynching, the Civil Rights era, and the present. (Discover the new U.S. Civil Rights Trail in Alabama.)
Whitney Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana — A slave cabin from a South Carolina plantation sits among the exhibits at the NMAAHC. At the Whitney Plantation, visitors can walk the fields once toiled in by slaves and learn the history of this brutal time in American history. Informed docents provide tours through memorials, slave cabins, and the great house with a unique focus on the slaves’ perspective. (Plantations are a dark chapter in American history—here’s why to visit.)
National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio — The intricate, secret network of allies that runaway slaves relied on to escape to freedom was called the Underground Railroad. Although slavery ended in the United States roughly 150 years ago, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center works to keep the story and the message alive for the current generation. With exhibitions that highlight slave trades of the past and present, the center presents interactive exhibits, films, and even includes a slave pen from Kentucky built in the early 1800s. The moving tribute is even more relevant given the approximately 27 million people estimated to be enslaved around the world today. (What if Martin Luther King Jr. were never assassinated?)
Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri — Long before Jackie Robinson became a household name, African American baseball players were making a name for themselves on the field. The Negro League offered these men a place to play in a segregated America. The museum highlights the successes and struggles of the players (both superstars and the unknown) and provides a glimpse into the incredible talent kept out of the mainstream. The museum is located in the historic 18th and Vine district with the American Jazz Museum, also worthy of a look for those in town.
Black American West Museum in Denver, Colorado — What started as an ode to black cowboys has grown to include tales and artifacts of African Americans who made their way west to forge new lives, whether driven by professional or personal circumstances. Located in the former home of Colorado’s first female African American physician, Justina Ford, the museum is packed with photos and artifacts is best experienced with a pre-arranged tour.
California African American Museum in Los Angeles, California — This 44,000-square-foot museum does a great job of showcasing items from African American history while also heralding contemporary themes. The exhibition “Oh Snap! West Coast Hip Hop Photography” is just one example of how the museum makes the collection interesting, informative, and accessible to younger audiences.

The Indian Reservation Band was essentially a propaganda campaign for the government run boarding schools that tried to forcibly assimilate Native American children to adopt European ways. The Indian Reservation Band followed in the footsteps of the Carlisle Indian Band, playing classical music, patriotic fanfare with brass instruments, and songs by John Phillip Sousa. Their vaudeville appearances were advertised as “Red Rhythm.”
The band was fronted by Pawnee-Otoe musician Joseph Shunatona. He wore a giant headdress while conducting the group and called himself “Chief.” The Indian Reservation Band played for President Coolidge, Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden, Herbert Hoover’s presidential inauguration, and FDR’s presidential inauguration.
The band broke up after the collapse of vaudeville in the early 1930s. Joseph Shunatona entered radio, first as an actor on Cowboy Tom’s Round-up with Tex Ritter, and later as a radio announcer in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the late 1940s he published the first Native American related joke book - Skookum’s Laugh Medicine: Indian Humor from the Great Sooner State.
A photo of Shunatona in the early 1960s seems to be channeling Frank Sinatra, as he wears a fedora with a rakish tilt and a cigarette burning between his fingers.
