Neil Young & The Crazy Harvesters - Oceania 1985
Just about 40 years ago, Neil Young was hitting New Zealand and Australia for the very first time. To mark the occasion, he had to do something special — which meant bringing two separate bands along. In what must've caused Neil a fair bit of cognitive dissonance, he played sets each night with the thoroughly countrified International Harvesters and the thoroughly ragged Crazy Horse. Plus solo folkie sets! Young never tried to pull off this kind of show ever again — so it's a good time to dig into a massive compilation of highlights.
Surprisingly, the solo sets aren't just about trotting out "Sugar Mountain" and "After the Gold Rush." Neil digs fairly deep, playing some genuine surprises — like a beautiful piano arrangement of "Midnight on the Bay" (the last time he's ever revisited that tune) and the first "Give Me Strength" since 1976 (and there's only been one version ever since). The Harvesters sound good, too — with some typically excellent contributions from Ben Keith and Rufus Thibodeaux.
Crazy Horse, meanwhile, comes across a little under-rehearsed — had they seen each other since those 1984 Santa Cruz gigs? Nevertheless, some innarresting moments, like the soon-to-discarded "Rock Rock Rock" (extra janky harmonica here!) and "Misfits/Dakota," which features the whole Crazy Harvesters ensemble. And then there's a "Down By The River" with none other than Bruce Springsteen (and Neil and the Boss' sideman in common Nils Lofgren) dragging everyone over the rainbow.
