Traditional Witch Bottles
Tumblr media
Spell jars have been fairly popular for a few years now so this type of working won’t be surprising for many of you. A witch bottle is a type of protection or counter magic that has been used for several hundreds of years in both England and North America.

History
Witch bottles have been in use since the late 17th century (the earliest reference we can find is about 1680), with their hayday ending about 1705. Now-a-days archaeological sites around old homes commonly dig them up around the foundations. They have been found all over England, and in the United States as far east as Pennsylvania and westward to at least eastern Texas. These bottles were used in two ways: 1) to cure a curse by putting the sender in so much pain they reversed it or they died, thereby breaking the curse, 2) to pre-emptively protect the occupants of the home from cursing and negative spirits. Both uses are made in similar ways, the placement afterwards is generally what changes.
The bottles found in the United States have generally been made of glass, of all shapes and sizes. England also had glass bottles, but many early version were made from a German clay pot, called Bartmann jugs, that had a male face with a beard stamped or carved onto it. These bottles were all found with similar items inside such as bent needles or rusty nails, and always urine. The pins are bent to make them of the otherworld and the rusty nails are thought to be as well. The urine has two different purposes, depending on which method is being used: the first method uses the urine to connect the curse with the witch (it was thought that some of the witch's blood would be in the urine of the victim), the second method uses the urine of an occupant of the house as a decoy. The decoy guides the curse or spirit towards the bottle, trapping it inside with the pins or nails where it can't get to it's actual intended target. When using as a countercurse, the pins are what gives the sender their pain.

Making a Witch Bottle
Many practitioners make witch bottles today similar to above. There are many variations but I will put the most common way here for you to experiment with.
You will need:
a bottle of some kind (preferably glass or clay)
Bent pins or rusted nails (thorns work or barbed wire works too)
Pinch of salt
A full bladder
Extra tag locks for others to be protected that live within the home (including pets)
There is no set time to make a witch bottle. If you wish to have one you can go by your own timing systems, or Kelden, in his book "The Crooked Path," suggests during a new moon or a Tuesday during a waning moon. I say the best time to make one is when you need to use the bathroom. Take your bottle with you and pee like you're at the doctors office taking a urine test. Make sure you wash your hands after (and clean up the side of the bottle if necessary).
Add in the pins or nails, telling them to either trap inside ill intended energy or spirits or to cause pain to the one who has cursed you. Add a large pinch of salt, asking it to purify anything inside. If this is a protection, add in the tag locks for your housemates telling them that their role is to act as decoys and defend those they belong to. Now we use it.
For Counter Cursing:
DISCLAIMER: glass can explode when heated, use with caution.
The most common way of using a witch bottle for counter-cursing, is to heat the bottle in a chimney with the fire going. The boiling urine will shift the pins around, causing pain to the one who cursed you. It was thought that if the bottle exploded, the curse was lifted. Another way that this was used is to put the bottle in a dung pile (or a heated compost would work well), the heat coming from the decaying process will heat the bottle for you (along with the added benefit of calling them dung).
For Protection:
When used for protection, this bottle is usually buried somewhere around the home. Often this is under or near the front door way, under the hearth, or sometimes in the walls itself. Many people who rent, will put it in a closet or drawer near the front door. These will stay there until it feels as though they need to be changed out. Some people say to dispose of it by burning (I say bad idea), or throw it in the trash (safest).

Conclusion
Simple and effective if you don't mind using bodily fluids. This is really a spell you can make your own if you understand how the pieces work. There are many variations throughout history that you can draw inspiration from as well if you don't mind a bit of historical reading. Some people add blood, other's sulfur, some will add pepper. What will you do?

You're more amazing than sickness
Lost Caverns of Ixalan is coming out on Arena tomorrow and I've avoided looking up any spoilers, aside from a few individual cards I stumbled across that didn't have any reminder text, so I have no idea what the new mechanics are. I looked up a list of the NAMES of the mechanics on the mtg fandom wiki, and I decided to make mechanics based on those names to see how close I get and also because it's fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I made this card for the descend mechanic at first but I didn't like the mechanic. How dare WotC make such a parasitic mechanic, they should really hire better designers smh. Also I realized that craft would probably be more interesting with artifacts that have tap abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#asks#custom cards#i picked up little bits and pieces about the mechanics#i know that maps are tokens and that discover comes with a number#and i also know that caves exist and transforming cards were listed as a mechanic so i made something with that#a neat inversion of the original ixalan block's nonlands that transform into lands#i also know that there's a graveyard theme so i built that into discover#but craft? all original baby#and i think i heard something about descend having variations? so my “ascend but graveyard” mechanic is definitely not accurate lol#also for context a “parasitic mechanic” is a mechanic that inherently works better the more of it you put in your deck#or that's really weak unless you have multiple of it#sometimes this is okay but my depth counter version of descend is just kinda really boring#it may as well say “this card is stronger the more cards with descend you have in your deck”#stuff like energy and dungeons are kinda parasitic but they're using that to do cool stuff not just to scale effects#also also putting craft on artifacts that have tap abilities IS weaker because now you have to choose what ability to use#but that also makes it fun because you have to choose so you can't just get everything#attachable lantern was actually the original craft card i made but i made Mortician's Toolkit because tap abilities were so bad with craft#little did i realize that having that anti-synergy makes the mechanic actually cool instead of just making your artifacts cheaper#craft+tap offers a tradeoff: you can get access to the effect for cheaper but you have to put it on another artifact#of course you can just use artifacts that don't need to tap. if you have one#the main reason why i don't think my craft mechanic is accurate is because “equipment that taps” is a terrible idea#even if the tap ability is being given by another card#when you tap an equipped creature it's easiest to just turn the whole pile of cards sideways#but if you have to track whether an equipment is tapped or untapped that becomes a pain#Reconfigure creatures are on thin ice#well actually there's cards Citanul Stalwart that tap artifacts as cost so maybe it's not that bad?#i'm most confident in the accuracy of my map tokens and transforming lands ideas#though idk whether the transforming lands and the cave lands would be the same thing#if they have transforming lands then probably because it'd be weird to have 2 separate land mechanics#spelled separate correctly first try fuck yeah

it took. so many weeks but i Finally managed to collect all the major terrain things i wanted for my campsite in pocket camp and im Very happy i love my little garden corner
#i have a florist van as well#cause you have three things you can decorate in pocket camp#your campsite your cabin and your camper van#and the camper goes with you when your little character gets placed in other players worlds#and i decorated the first floor of my cabin to have a little treat serving area and then a flower bouquet ordering counter#and then the upper floor to have a bedroom and tons of crafting supplies and flowers scattered everywhere#like I'm making the bouquets in the upper section and then taking them downstairs to the cooler to be displayed and sold#i don't really Actually have flowers to sell especially because you can't actually sell flowers in the market box but that's fine#i like making little environmental storytelling things#and my campsite has even more flowers#an azalea hedge instead of fences and sakura trees and blossoms everywhere#and a little food selling area with like. a dango stand a bakery stand and a sakura themed counter#and a little table with food set out#and sitting areas like benches scattered all across the campsite (we need good public seating ofc)#and then the cabin has like. a bunch of games and instruments on the first floor like an activity area#and then as many food related things as i could fit on the second floor like a massive cafeteria that I'd let anyone in to eat#and then the top floor is my Proper Bedroom when I'm not zooming around in my florist van#with a bunch of cozy comfy things everywhere and also books and gems and shiny things#now all i need is actually nice looking wallpapers and floor patterns. sigh. i must wait another century#(seriously WHY are the wallpapers so damn expensive PLEASE make the reissues cheaper please 🥺)
