Smart Cost-effective Strategies Reshaping the Recruitment

We have successfully navigated through the first quarter of 2023 without the possible recession. However, businesses have continued to prioritize cost-cutting measures to prepare for what is approaching. For many organizations, cutbacks simply mean tightening of the budgets. Unfortunately, recruitment is often the primary area to take a hit when budgets are stringent.
61% of business leaders anticipate hiring or retention program budget reductions this year.
Acquiring the right talent is vital for organizational success. However, the temptation to expedite the hiring process is common in today's fast-paced business landscape. This rushed approach may offer temporary relief by filling open positions quickly, but it can result in long-term consequences known as "recruiting debt." The primary objective of recruitment should be to attract highly skilled professionals in the industry who can contribute to the company's success. Despite the influx of applicants on a daily basis, it is crucial for recruitment processes to be discerning in order to identify the most qualified candidates.
However, there is a silver lining. You don't have to resort to extreme measures like hiring freezes or layoffs to stay within your budget; you can always opt for cost-effective recruiting practices. Here are seven strategies to help you recruit more efficiently and cost-effectively, regardless of the economic climate. Dive into the below session to learn more.
Examining each applicant thoroughly to determine their suitability, as well as investing in their training and orientation, can put a strain on the company's financial resources. Thus, there exists a delicate equilibrium between the expenses associated with recruitment and the extent to which the company is willing to invest in securing top-tier talent.
7 Cost-Effective Recruiting Tips for Your Business
Advertise where it's worth it
Adopting effective advertising strategies is crucial to enhance the cost-effectiveness of your hiring efforts. Utilizing data analysis, you can identify the recruitment channels that have proven efficient in attracting highly qualified candidates, enabling you to allocate your job advertising budget wisely.
By investing in the appropriate advertising platforms, you can optimize your budget allocation. An effective approach is to explore programmatic job advertising.
Programmatic job advertising has the potential to reduce your cost-per-applicant by over 30%.
Furthermore, it is essential to acknowledge the evolving labor market dynamics, mainly due to the COVID-19 crisis, which has significantly increased unemployment rates. As a result, you are likely to receive a higher volume of applications without having to invest heavily in advertising as extensively as before.
Emphasizing internal mobility as a strategy to address skill shortages
Internal mobility programs offer a cost-effective solution for reducing recruiting expenses. By motivating employees to explore new opportunities within the organization, companies can benefit in various ways, particularly during times of economic uncertainty. To establish a successful internal mobility program, foster a culture that values internal job transitions. Start by performing an internal audit to identify skills gaps and leverage existing team members to fill those gaps. This assessment will also help determine which skills need to be sourced externally.
However, despite the advantages of internal talent mobility, many companies struggle to get it right.
Nearly half of all companies (49%) express concern about their internal systems' capability to identify and transition employees into different positions effectively.
To overcome this, develop structured internal recruitment processes that promote career development and mentorship. This approach not only enhances internal mobility but also boosts employee retention rates.
94% of employees are more likely to stay with a company that invests in their growth.
You may also consider hiring high-performing interns for entry-level positions within the organization.
Encourage employee referrals
Employee referral is a highly effective way to find qualified candidates who align with the company culture.
69% of organizations have a formal employee referral program in place.
The advantages are evident:
Leveraging your employees' connections enables you to make exceptional hires at a reduced cost.
Referred candidates tend to complete training faster and reach peak productivity sooner.
They are five times more likely to be hired, with one in five referrals receiving a job offer.
Referred employees often prove to be a long-term fit as they come recommended by individuals who already know and appreciate the company culture.
Establishing or enhancing your employee referral program to achieve cost-effective recruiting is crucial. You can accomplish this by incentivizing employee referrals through incentives like retail gift cards or cash bonuses. Additionally, tapping into the organization's external network and identifying suitable colleagues can yield positive results.
Use recruiting automation
Companies with a time to hire of three weeks or more spend approximately $3,000-$4,000 per hire, whereas those with a time to hire under three weeks experience a significant 50% cost reduction.
Automating manual and repetitive hiring tasks minimizes labor hours, leading to financial savings and enhanced recruitment operations. Several steps in the recruitment processes can benefit from automation to optimize cost-effectiveness, including:
Advertising open roles
Tracking job applicants
Scheduling job interviews
Recruiting on social media
Pre-screening candidates
Rediscovering past candidates
Nurturing job candidates
Conducting background checks
By implementing recruiting automation, businesses can achieve efficient and budget-friendly hiring practices while saving valuable time and resources.
Adopt remote interviewing
Remote interviewing has become increasingly popular, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made in-person interviews difficult. According to a survey, 63% of companies have used video interviews in their hiring process, and this trend continues to grow as more organizations adopt virtual interviewing.
The advantages of remote interviewing are evident.
It reduces time to hire, minimizes unconscious biases in hiring decisions, simplifies scheduling, and ultimately lowers hiring costs.
Companies that utilize virtual interviews are 2.7 times more likely to improve their cost per hire compared to those that don't.
Leading companies are 61% more likely to use video interviewing tools than others.
To streamline the interviewing process and save labor hours, one-way video interviews can be used for candidate screening instead of phone calls. Later stages of the candidate journey can include live virtual interviews, which can be easily scheduled with the help of an interview scheduling tool.
In response to COVID-19, many companies are also opting for virtual job fairs for recruitment. These virtual fairs are more cost-effective to organize and participate in than physical job fairs.
Use recruitment analytics and track results.
Recruitment analytics is a game-changer for organizations seeking smarter, cost-effective recruiting.
By 2025, 84% of recruiters predict data-driven hiring decisions to be the norm.
Utilizing these analytics enhances hire quality, process efficiency, and cost optimization. However, not all metrics hold equal value. Selecting the right metrics is crucial for effective recruitment analytics. While time to hire, cost per hire, and retention rate is commonly tracked, other metrics offer powerful insights, including:
Source of hire
Retention rate
Candidate quality
Turnover rate
Quality of hire
Applicant-to-hire
Application completion rate
Use social media and other digital channels.
Social recruiting has gained immense popularity lately as organizations incorporate it into their hiring strategies.
According to a survey, 70% of hiring managers have achieved successful hires through social media, while 71% have found it effective in reducing the time to fill positions.
Leveraging digital platforms such as social media, company blogs, websites, job portals, and job alerts can enhance visibility, lower recruitment expenses, and strengthen your sourcing approach. It's important to note that social media platforms are free to use, presenting an opportunity to enhance your employer brand simultaneously. It's a win-win situation!

I find it very funny how everyone in Mass Effect makes a big deal about the Spectres being agents beyond the law. The Council's brutal pragmatists who will do whatever it takes. People with no oversight, no consequences, the dark agents who answer to no one but themselves -
And then in ME3 they just go ahead and recruit Kaidan. Kaidan. The man Udina describes as 'incorruptible.' The guy whose whole shtick is that he doesn't think anyone in authority, be it Vyrnnus or Shepard or himself, has a right to throw out the book and seek results at any cost. That guy. Kaidan 'canonically agonises over doing the right thing' Alenko. The Council really said 'we have constructed an elite team of agents who will use any means to secure their ends and also this big sweetheart who finds that very idea abhorrent.' Spectre agents years after the Reaper war get a cold chill down their spines when they realise they're going to have to work with Spectre Alenko, because they know he will call them on their bullshit in the nicest way possible.
Don't get me wrong, he deserves it and he's probably the best thing to ever happen to the Spectres. I just find it very amusing.
#mass effect#kaidan alenko#yes I'm in a mass effect headpsace. which means it's talking about kaidan hours.#ngl the older I get the more refreshing his morality is

Today's Wall O'Text: We've got just under two months to get the first things done.
Timothy Snyder is an American historian whose book On Tyranny made him a household name in 2017, followed this year by On Freedom. His take on what we need to do this time around to mount an effective resistance to Trump's insane agenda is urgent and essential:
Start now. We can get a lot done between now and the Inauguration on January 20th.
Here are excerpts from Snyder's interview in the Rolling Stone article linked above where he describes ways ordinary people can take meaningful steps right now to lay the groundwork for stopping Trump's agenda in its tracks:
~~~~~
[From the article, emphasis added:]
“You can’t despair,” he tells Rolling Stone. “Because that’s what they want. They want you to think that it’s hopeless. It’s never hopeless.”
Snyder’s first rule in On Tyranny is “don’t obey in advance.” He emphasizes that Americans opposed to Trump’s designs should take stock, and action, now. “The period of November, December, January, becomes very important,” he says.
For normal people, Snyder insists the key is “to get out in protest” — now and through the inauguration. The understandable impulse of “keeping your head in,” Snyder says will only embolden Trump’s reactionary team.
“You’re giving them even more confidence that they’re gonna be able to do what they want in January.” What’s demanded of activists in this moment is to “deflate that confidence,” Snyder says, and you do that by “showing that you’re not afraid, by cooperating with your neighbors, and by organizing.”
Snyder emphasizes a lesson of the “Wall of Moms” in Portland, Oregon, in late summer 2020, who helped drive up the political cost and terrible optics for Trump’s most heavy-handed crackdown on public dissent. Launching tear gas at Black Lives Matter protesters looked different on TV when the feds were brutalizing a wall of white mothers in gold shirts, locking arms at the front of the crowd. “It’s about corporeal politics,” Snyder says. “Getting your body out where there are other bodies — with people who are maybe not like you or maybe less privileged than you.”
Here, Snyder insists, is where the American public has its most important, and perhaps most challenging role to play. “The Trump-Vance initiatives can only work by getting the population involved — and basically corrupting us,” he says. Snyder argues that even Americans who might share anger with Trump about immigration may yet be recruited to block the border camps promised by Stephen Miller.
“That’s the kind of active thinking that folks have to do — am I going to become the kind of person who takes part in this sort of thing? Am I going to become the kind of person who denounces my neighbors because they are not documented?”
“If Their Rights Are on the Line, My Rights Are on the Line”
A key to resisting authoritarianism, Snyder says, is standing up for the rights of the least powerful first. “If protest comes down to the people who are protesting only because they have to, then you always lose,” he says. “It has to be people who are one, two, three, four, even five steps away from being directly affected who show solidarity — and who also show pragmatism and wisdom by getting out early.
“If you’re more privileged, you should be thinking, ‘What can I do for the least privileged people?’” he says. “If their rights are on the line, my rights are on the line. That’s not just a moral position. It’s actually, politically, 100 percent correct.”
In the meantime, Snyder advises, America’s system of federalism offers hope for democracy at the state and local level. “Many things are going to be terrible. But controlling the federal government doesn’t mean you’re controlling everything,” he says. He exhorts Americans to support the institutions closest to them that uphold democratic norms — “whether that means some civil society organization, or state government, or a local mayor” — and collectively try to strengthen those bodies.
[End article text.]
simon:
simon riley was a quiet man. that's why he liked you, always talking just because you were eager to share, never expecting him to reciprocate. he knew he was blunt, gruff, and (a bit) unlikeable, so it always seemed safer to respond in as little words as possible. on days like today though, he just had to say something. you hadn't said a word to anyone in a week (he checked) and stopped coming to every "optional" friendly hangout after a rough mission. you were holed up in your room ever since your patient had died, and he meant to do something about it.
"what." you said gruffly to the person knocking at the door. "'s me, dove." simon. "go away." instead of listening, you heard the door open. you turned around in your bed to face the wall, avoiding eye contact at all costs. "i'm not good company right now, si." you could practically hear him shrug. he closed the door with a sigh, the silence between you two enveloping the room in a cocoon. instead of hearing your desk chair sqeak, you heard a rustle of clothing, tac gear dropping to the floor. almost as if he was taking off his clothes? but there was no way, this was ghost, who wore a stupid mask and stupid gloves that always made you wonder about the veins underneath and-
and suddenly simon riley was climbing under the covers with you, clothed in only his boxers. you knew because he was everywhere, skin on skin, wedging one large, scarred thigh between yours. his left hand under your pillow, right hand sneaking its way to your waist. he drew shapes on your skin with his calloused hands, the only sound in the room the scrape of his skin on yours. "we'll get through this, yeah?" you nodded against him, not trusting yourself to speak, tears caught in your throat. simon nuzzled himself into your neck, and for the first time that week, you slept through the night.
johnny:
usually, you loved the sound of johnny's laughs, boisterous and fun, bringing energy into every conversation. this week, though, you couldn't stomach it. you stopped laughing at his jokes, stopped shoving him when he tried to put his arm around you, stopped engaging in his talk on comms when you had the mantle of field medic. you cringed when you saw the spark in his eyes dampen, but you couldn't seem to care when a similar image of your comrade dying on the field took a starring role in your nightmares.
this was your second nightmare tonight, the image of your comrade's bloody body, sinking into an open grave. you could almost feel the packed dirt in your throat, succumbing to the grave you put her in. and suddenly you were awake, blinking at the darkness of the room. you were so tired, emotionally drained, you didn't even think about where you were walking, just knew you were leaving your room. and suddenly, you were knocking on johnny's door, knowing he'd be up at this time. he swung open the door, misinterpreting what you were after. "bonnie. knew ye'd give me a late night call soon." you rolled your eyes at his joke, feeling an unwilling smile creep onto your face.
"not that kind of night, johnny." he winked anyways, ushering you into his room. "glad ta see you smile, lass." that dimmed your mood. you suddenly scrambling changing your mind. "well i just wanted to say hi but you're busy so i'll leave you to it-" johnny covered your mouth with his hand, effectively cutting off your thoughts. "up ye go." you squealed as he picked you up, depositing you onto his bed. he locked the door and turned off the light, keeping a nightlight on just for you. "yer gonna tell me about all those thoughts in that pretty head of yours, hm?" you nodded, and felt the weight lighten off your chest for the first time in weeks.
john:
john was your rock. a fellow higher-up, hardened by war and bittered by reality, wrapped up in a fatherly manner. he was all knowledge and hard truths with his men, but with you? on a day like today? after standing in blood for three hours, using half of the base hospital's resources to try to stop what should have been a typical infection that was actually poison? that fatherly attitude could shove it.
"need to search your office for poison, doctor." john was a shadow at your office door. "yeah, sure, whatever." you needed to put in requests for all the supplies used, finalize the death certificate, launch the investigation. the last thing you cared about was john following protocol. you didn't register the captain's movements until he was behind your chair, leaning down in your ear. "come on." he took your hand's off your laptop's keys, placing them in your lap. "the boys will be here any minute, love. come on." you let him guide you, going numb at the feeling. the reality that your patient had been poisoned, targeted, and you couldn't do anything about it was suddenly hitting you. john was making you stand up, but you were in a trance, just a body he could move however he wanted.
you blinked and you were standing in his office, looking at his chair. "go on. i'll make an exception just for you." you shook your head, unable to explain why not. "you need to sit, love." you shook your head again. the medical part of your brain told you the shock was hitting. john sat in his chair instead, guiding you between his legs. you looked down at him, at his hands on your waist. making a split second decision, you ungracefully collapsed sideways into his lap. john grunted but said nothing, adjusting your feet to hang off the chair. your arms circled his thick neck, hands rubbing at his beard. he took off his hat, laying it on the table, then kissed your forehead. you tucked your head into his neck, and finally, finally, let yourself cry.
kyle:
gaz was loveable and cocky, which you were okay with. you called him kyle to humble him, a playful nudge. he called you sweetheart right back, that accent of his playing with all the right vowels just to rile you up. but today, two days after the death of your comrade that you should have saved, you didn't feel sweet at all. not one bit.
"its after 11. should be in bed by now." he was at the door of your office, taking in the heaping piles of medical reports on your desk.
"kyle, im busy." you huffed, not bothering to look up. your comrade's autopsy report was staring right back at you, clinical notes on how she could have been saved if you had just had the supplies.
"sweetheart-" you almost slammed your pen on your desk. "don't call me that, kyle. i'm not in the mood." he wasn't deterred, warm eyes swimming with understanding. "this about what happened?" he mumured in a soft voice, like he was comforting a kitten instead of you, a dark hole of guilt. "i just-" you made the mistake of making eye contact, of seeing how kind he looked. the tears started rushing out and you couldn't stop them. you hadn't cried when she died, so maybe it was finally time. "i just keep looking at these notes about what i could have done, if things were different and gaz, idontknowwhattodo..."
you trailed off, embarrassed. calling him gaz was a sign of weakness, of this whole facade crumbling down. "come 'ere.” you stood up and walked between his open arms, a small laugh erupting as he overexaggerated how heavy you were. "you did more than anyone on that field could have done. and you're still sweet to me. even when you're a bit of a snotty mess." he kissed your forehead then, and you weren't even going to touch what that meant. all that mattered were gaz's strong arms, holding your waist and rubbing small circles as you put all your physical and emotional baggage on him. and for now, being held was all you needed.
--
had to let this one simmer for a bit. thanks anon <3
I've posted about this before but in the current climate, especially, a signal boost can only be a good thing.
There is an excellent organisation here in the UK that I have an ongoing donation to, Campaign Against Antisemitism.
From their website:
"HOW WE FIGHT ANTISEMITISM
Campaign Against Antisemitism consists of eight directorates which collaborate closely to expose and counter antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of the law:
1. Investigations and Enforcement
We work closely with police forces around the country, the Crown Prosecution Service, regulatory bodies and the government to ensure that antisemitism is detected, investigated and punished with the full force of the law. We focus on criminal antisemitism and antisemitic acts committed by professionals or institutions which are subject to special regulation, such as lawyers, teachers, sportspeople and charities. We also provide training and advice to the authorities, whilst also scrutinising their performance and holding them to account when they fall short.
2. Awareness and Communication
Working closely with senior journalists and advertising professionals, we run proactive campaigns to ensure that the public is aware of anti-Jewish racism and the immense societal danger that it poses. Through our advocacy work we seek to mobilise public support for the fight against antisemitism, whilst also generating pressure on the authorities to pursue a policy of zero tolerance for antisemitism. We also provide information and comment to the media through our media centre.
3. Outreach and Education
We strive to reduce anti-Jewish prejudice by providing education and training to all in society who wish to find out more about being Jewish, antisemitism, and fighting racism. We also reach out to other minority communities and anti-racist groups so that we can work to strengthen each other.
4. Public Affairs
We have forged links with the government, local authorities, regulators, police forces and the Crown Prosecution Service, as well as with companies such as the major social networks. We meet at the highest levels to tackle the roots of antisemitism and ensure that the law is upheld effectively, consistently and firmly.
5. Mobilisation
Antisemitism is a societal problem and we believe that individuals should be at the forefront of the fight against antisemitism. We recruit, train and mobilise volunteers, empowering them to leverage their talent and expertise against antisemitism.
6. Litigation
We have recruited some of Britain’s most formidable and acclaimed legal minds. Our lawyers give their time to provide guidance on specific cases and also takes action to hold the authorities and private companies to account when they fail to act against antisemitism effectively. Our legal experts include specialists in criminal law, charity law, regulatory law, administrative law, employment law, media law and litigation.
7. Organisation and Finance
Our volunteers need central support in every area from systems administration to finance. Working with senior professionals, we ensure that our volunteers receive the support they need, and that our charity complies strictly with regulatory and financial requirements.
8. Fundraising
We are proud to operate with extremely low overheads, relying almost entirely on volunteers, however our work costs money, whether it is to pay court fees when we litigate, or to commission important research. We fundraise throughout the year to raise the sums needed to enable our work to continue."
They also have a podcast that recently aired its 100th episode, that I highly recommend. They talk about the current work they're doing, media bias, representation, and over 5 seasons have included interviews with Jewish public figures, Holocaust survivors, and more recently, survivors of Oct. 7 and family members of hostages:
