Murder Under the Midnight Sun By Stella BlĆ³mkvist
Murder Under the Midnight Sun
Stella BlĆ³mkvist
Translated by Quentin Bates
Corylus Books
Publication Date: 3 May 2024
Corylus Books have shown their commitment to bringing to an English audience the work of the mysterious author of Icelandic lawyer Stella BlĆ³mkvist with the publication last year of Murder At The Residence. Following quickly afterwards Murder Under the Midnight Son offers another compelling and multidimensional story. Whether you have read the earlier novel or not will in no way impact your enjoyment of this story and I must admit I have not investigated if these were originally consecutive stories in their original language.
After an initial meeting, the premise of BlĆ³mkvist's most next assignment is to solve the mystery of the fate of a young Scottish woman, who disappeared nearly a decade earlier. In a sparsely populated country like Iceland, the possible locations a body could be left are almost endless, yet the family seek closure.
Meanwhile a journalist friend of her's has excitedly told her about revelations that will not only create huge headlines in his newspaper but will also form the basis of a forthcoming expose book. However when his intent appears to be revealed, his predicament will also take some of BlĆ³mkvist's attention.
There are more components to the book. Intriguingly, there is a strong historical context to this story, particularly in respect of Iceland's role in the cold war, but also to the countries involvement following the more recent breakup of Yugoslavia. An additional layer of mystery is added when BlĆ³mkvist makes a gruesome discovery within a glacier which later appears to have a very distant origin. Given this book is just over two hundred pages long, a lot is packed into a relatively small number of pages.
There are several surprises ahead which I certainly did not guess. Personally I do feel that some elements of the story are more effective than others. Stella BlĆ³mkvist is shown to be self determined and headstrong in all aspects of her life and while this makes her a fascinating lead character for a crime novel, I did find that a particular personal relationship she developed appeared to me a little less plausible, particularly given the ethics the lawyers have to work to. Something supposedly spontaneous could also be viewed as exploitative. It will be interesting to see if this is a theme that endures in more of the author's novels and if our protagonist actually has some characteristics of the anti-hero.
These comments not withstanding, there is much more for the reader to get their teeth into with this book. While originally written 14 years ago, there is a timeliness which keeps the themes within the story very relevant. The distinctive touches featured in the narrative give the book quite a unique outlook which provided a welcome sidestep to some of the more downbeat viewpoints often featured in the Nordic subgenre. The story combines the isolation of the outdoors with the urban environment of Reykjavik, thus offering effective contrasts. The intertwined mysteries gradually unravel in a way which effectively keeps the readers' attention. If you've not yet picked up on Stella Stella BlĆ³mkvist, now is certainly the time to do so.
The blurb:
Murder Under the Midnight Sun by Stella BlĆ³mkvist What does a woman do when her husband's charged with the frenzied killing of her father and her best friend? She calls in Stella BlĆ³mkvist to investigate - however unwelcome the truth could turn out to be. Smart, ruthless and with a flexible moral code all of her own, razor-tongued lawyer Stella BlĆ³mkvist is also dealing with a desperate deathbed request to track down a young woman who vanished a decade ago. It looks like a dead end, but she agrees to pick up the stone-cold trail - and she never gives up, even if the police did a long time ago. Then there's the mystery behind the arm that emerges from an ice cap, with a mysterious ruby ring on one frozen finger? How does this connect to another unexplained disappearance, and why were the police at the time so keen to write it off as a tragic accident? Brutal present-day crimes have their roots in the past that some people would prefer to stay forgotten. As Stella pieces together the fragments, is she getting too close to the truth and making herself a target for ruthless men determined to conceal secret sins?
Stella BlĆ³mkvist has been a bestselling series in Iceland since the first book appeared in the 1990s and has attracted an international audience since the TV series starring HeiĆ°a Reed aired. The books have been published under a pseudonym that still hasnāt been cracked. The question of Stella BlĆ³mkvistās identity is one that crops up regularly, but it looks like itās going to remain a mysteryā¦
Quentin Bates has personal and professional roots in Iceland that go very deep. He is an author of series of nine crime novels and novellas featuring the Reykjavik detective Gunnhildur (Gunna) GĆsladĆ³ttir. In addition to his own fiction, he has translated many works of Icelandās coolest writers into English, including books by Lilja SigurĆ°ardĆ³ttir, GuĆ°laugur Arason, Einar KĆ”rason, Ćskar GuĆ°mundsson, SĆ³lveig PĆ”lsdĆ³ttir, JĆ³nĆna Leosdottir and Ragnar JĆ³nasson. Quentin was instrumental in launching Iceland Noir in 2013, the crime fiction festival in Reykjavik.

MY CURRENT OCS
(all of them are still under development)
1. Veronica
Often called Vero. I don't know what was I thinking but I gave her VRNC as her alias. She/her, says she's heterosexual yet seems like bisexual. Her emoji representation: šāļøššš§. She's reliable, discipline, studious, and determined. She's also spiteful, ambitious, strict, and expressive. She likes berries, fruit juice, reading books, listening to instrumentals, chill breeze. Doesn't like to be demanded for help, but she would help anyway. She hates grooming (has some bitter experience here). She usually dresses semi-formally, only wears casual clothes at home and, a little fun fact, she doesn't own gowns. (I'm still considering whether she'd have magical power or not.) She listens to any instrumental playlist she could find, with no particular preference.
2. Kafi J.
People knew him as Coffee. He/him, he has a little interest in romance but he still says he's heterosexual. His emoji representation: āšššŖ«š£. His nickname "Coffee" is given by Ziyu because Coffee consumes a lot of caffeine in daily basis, and it sounds similar to his real name. He's persevere, passionate, ready steady, and benevolent. He's impatient and sleep deprived. He is skeptical about anything which would only lead him to overthink. Honestly he doesn't want to drink coffee, but he needs the caffeine to keep himself awake during studying and shit. Just like Vero, Coffee dresses semi-formally. But Coffee would sometimes appear in casual clothes outside. He likes soft fur, cozy room, studying together, and warm waffles. He hates insects and useless people. He listens to Lauv and Daniel Caesar's songs.
3. Natalia
Known as Atan. She/her, heterosexual. Her emoji representation: šššā³š. Her nickname "Atan" is just her real name backwards (Aliatan), and take the last two syllables. She's spirited, decisive, generous, and precise. She's also outrageous, cheeky, a consequentialist, and sly. She likes to hangout, do homework (secretly), eat sugarcoated crackers, wear beanies, eyeglasses, loose clothes, and play with puppies. She hates scammers, imperative people, and loud noises at night. She plays a lot, but also studies a lot afterwards. Atan hangs out every day, whether with close friends or just friendly people she sees outside. She listens to korean pop songs, including Stray Kids and Wanna One.
4. Corylus avellana
Just call him Ory. He/him, bisexual. His emoji representation: šš”šš«§š¤. His name... Literally the Latin name of corkscrew hazel. Because he has natural fluffy curvy hair, just like that. He's fun, loyal, trustworthy, and imaginative. He's also sophisticated, lazy, naughty, and observant. He likes to wear baggy clothes, comb his hair with hands and not with an actual comb, walk around new places, watch movies and animes. He doesn't like reading books, working out, high temperature, and mean people. He hates liars and betrayals. He mostly wears casual outfits with oversized outerwear. He would be very obedient with the person he adores, aside from his rebellious behavior. He listens to pop songs in general.
5. Kheila
She/her, refuses to say but people believe she's bisexual. Her emoji representation: ļæ½ļæ½ļ潚³ļøšš«š¹. She's charming, angelic, thoughtful, and persuasive. She's also apathetic, lowkey possessive, restrained manipulative, and careful. She likes subtlety, marshmallows, new hairstyle, accessories, cute outfits, fragrance, and cats. She hates discouragement, bullies, bad smells, and. harsh people. She is indifferent about her grades, yet always manage to stabilize them. She always seems collected and elegant. She is respectfully soft-spoken, polite, and well-mannered. Her voice is feathery and mellifluous. Although she's a bit enigmatic, no one questions about it. She listens to J-Pop and VOCALOID.
6. Ziyu Lee
People call him Ziyu. He/him, heterosexual, bi in denial. His emoji representation: āļøš¦š
š¤šŖ¹. He's softhearted, straightforward, tough, and aloof. He's also gullible, dicey, flexible, and tolerant. He likes warm tea, strawberry ice cream, spicy noodles, quokkas, and affection. He's a tsundere. He hates uncooperative people, lousy day, nosy people, and unclean stuffs. He always dresses neatly and clean, subconsciously looks chic and classy all the time. Sometimes his words and gestures don't match accordingly when he speaks. He's very closed about his private life. He listens to TV Girl and The Overtunes.

Deadly Autumn Harvest
By Tony Mott
Translated by Marina Sofia
Corylus Books
This is the long awaited English debut by Romanian crime fiction author Tony Mott. Set in her home city of BraČov is a city in the Transylvania region, ringed by the Carpathian mountains. I believe this may actually be the second book in a series featuring forensic pathologist Gigi Alexis, yet was presumably chosen as her English language debut as it was seen as a good introduction by the publisher, Corylus Books.
Accessible it certainly is. After a heart stopping and short opening sequence, the novel quickly introduces Alexis. Having just returned from holiday it takes no time to begin to discover elements of her personal life, her work environment and her dark sence of humour. Having established the basics, our new protagonist is quickly called to a crime scene where ominously the investigating officer warns Alexis that the murder victim shares a strong resemblance to her. This crime is perplexing as there is no obvious motive and due to the unique placing of the corpse. It isn't long before it becomes clear to the reader that this is a police division under the pressure of a new chief and secondly that the views and opinions of a female civilian are judged secondary to those of male police officers
As further events including subsequent mystifying murders unfold it appears that BraČov could be facing the almost unique predicament of having a serial killer at large where Alexa will require to channel all her wits and experience, as well as her powers of persuasion in order to attempt to make these crimes stop and find the perpetrator.
Readers will find that Deadly Autumn Harvest is an absorbing introduction to Romanian crime fiction, although it also complements well previous novels already available to English language readers from the same publisher. It offers a fascinating insight into murder investigations in the former communist country and also is a very revealing introduction to BraČov and it's surrounding area which will appeal to many existing readers of crime fiction. I strongly recommend it and look forward to reading more novels by Tony Mott in the future.
Deadly Autumn Harvest
A series of bizarre murders rocks the beautiful Carpathian town of BraÅov. At first thereās nothing obvious that links what look like random killings.
With the police still smarting from the scandal of having failed to act in a previous case of a serial kidnapper and killer, they bring in forensic pathologist Gigi Alexa to figure out if several murderers are at work ā or if they have another serial killer on their hands.
Ambitious, tough, and not one to suffer fools gladly, Gigi fights to be taken seriously in a society that maintains old-fashioned attitudes to the roles of women.
She and the police team struggle to establish a pattern, especially when resources are diverted to investigating a possible terrorist plot. With the clock ticking, Gigi stumbles across what looks to be a far-fetched theory ā just as she realises that she could be on the murdererās to-kill list.
Author bio:
Tony Mott was born and bred in BraÅov, which often forms the backdrop for her novels. She has worked internationally as a coach and HR professional, but her real passion remains writing. In 2022 she received the Romanian Mystery&Thriller Award. Deadly Autumn Harvest is the first novel in the Gigi Alexa series to be translated into English.
Translator bio:
Marina Sofia is a translator, reviewer, writer and blogger, as well as a third culture kid who grew up trilingual in Romanian, German and English. Her previous translations for Corylus Books are Sword by Bogdan Teodorescu and Resilience by Bogdan Hrib. She has spent most of her winters in BraÅov skiing, so is delighted to translate a book set in her favourite Romanian town.

Colour plates in books are wonderful things, particularly old ones. The yellowing paper, the ranks of insects, lichens and plants that look as if they have been painted from dead specimens on pins (and probably were), and the arcane taxonomies, all contribute to the rather strange testament to life in death that is the colour plate.
I have any number of annoying small boxes containing found objects. Their provenance grows fainter with time, and I have no idea where I was when I collected these items. I had been looking for something unrelated when I came across these items and realised that I could paint something that combined both objets trouvƩs and the colour plate. As always, the subject comes from outside, not from some location inside me. It is the external world that shapes us.
As ācolour plateā the painting shows the following (top to bottom):
Slipper limpet (Crepidula fornicata ā a wonderful name!)
Native Oyster (Ostrea edulis)
Unknown feather, probably a Blackbird (Turdus merula)
Hmm ā work in progress, maybe the Surf clam (Spisula solida)
A hazelnut (Corylus avellana)
I used watercolour and gouache (the latter for chalky texture and body). It was pleasing to combine these things for shape and texture, and then further explore those qualities in the paint. Seen from a distance, there is also a sense of a tribal sigil, but this is a happy accident.
