Earlier this month [September 2020], the head of Australian-English mining giant Rio Tinto announced he would step down following the company's May [2020] decision to detonate two sacred Aboriginal sites in Australia that were treasure troves of millennia-old [...] material. [...] However, the mining giant is on track to do exactly that an hour east of Phoenix [...]. [Second-largest metals mining company on the planet] Rio Tinto is the majority owner of the Resolution Copper mine project near Superior [Arizona], being developed with another Australian-Anglo company, BHP [largest metals-mining company on the planet]. If successful, the project would leave a two-mile-wide crater in the place of the natural area known as Oak Flat — land sacred to the Apache people. Doing so would mean "the complete and utter destruction of a sacred site," which is just what the company did in Australia [...].

In a draft report on the project released last year [2019], the U.S. Forest Service, which currently controls the land, enumerated some of the potential impacts of the mine. The proposed mine has a "high potential ... to directly, adversely, and permanently affect numerous cultural artifacts, sacred seeps and springs, traditional ceremonial areas, resource gathering localities, burial locations, and other places and experiences of high spiritual and other value to tribal members," the Forest Service noted in the report. Rio Tinto and BHP have invested about $2 billion in Resolution Copper since 2004. The mine would go to extreme depths to remove the 40 billion pounds of copper believed to be present, but is expected to return $144 billion worth of copper [...]. “Resolution Copper welcomes the opportunity to continue building on the extensive engagement with Native American tribes, who play an essential role in shaping this project," [a Resolution spokesperson] wrote in an email.

It's unclear what impact "shaping" the project will have on the 12.5-square-mile crater that sacred sites will collapse into. [...] The impact of the Forest Service study is also questionable. Due to a congressional mandate snuck through by Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake in 2015, the Forest Service must hand over the land to Resolute Copper within 60 days of completing the final environmental impact statement — regardless of the result. The Chiricahua Apache from the San Carlos reservation call it Chich’il Bildagoteel. In English, it is known as Oak Flat. Chich’il Bildagoteel is today threatened by a massive mine proposed by Resolution Copper, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. Soils here sing with generations of sacred gathering, whether around a young woman for her coming-of-age ceremony or for seasonal acorn gathering. “This sacred land has become a relative to the Apache. This land is a teacher and a spiritual guide. Chich’il Bildagoteel plays a critical role in Apache culture,” writes Jade Begay, a Diné and Tesuque multimedia artist [...]. To destroy Oak Flat is to take away a birthplace, a culture’s identity, a deep root, and grounds common to each individual’s origin, ancestors and relatives. It is to take away a sacred place that guides a people to know themselves. [...]

The San Carlos reservation was established in 1872 [...]. President U.S. Grant designated the reservation for Chiricahua Apache and Yavapai bands. [...] In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower decreed the area of Oak Flat closed to mining. He designated the surrounding area public land under the multiple-use mandate of the U.S. Forest Service. In 1971, those regulations were reaffirmed. [...] It wasn’t until 2014 -- when the late Senator John McCain and a few collaborators attached a fine-print rider to a must-pass military spending bill -- that the public ownership of Oak Flat came into question. McCain’s rider promised the land to Rio Tinto, a top contributor to McCain’s campaign during that same year. The National Defense Authorization Act was 1,600 pages long. With only one hour to review the document, members of Congress scrambled to decipher McCain’s stealth rider. Leah Millet of the New York Times called this move: “An impressive new low in congressional corruption” (2015). [...]

Rio Tinto is an Anglo-Australian multinational metals and mining corporation. It has become one of the world’s largest companies, grossing $40 billion (US) in sales in 2017. [...] It is now a main producer of many of the Earth’s exploited commodities, including aluminum, iron ore, uranium, copper, coal and diamonds. Rio Tinto has operations on six continents, but is concentrated mainly in Australia and Canada. Its head offices are located in London and Melbourne. Resolution Copper is a Rio Tinto subsidiary focused on mining for copper beneath Oak Flat.

Resolution Copper plans to exploit what is regarded as the largest copper deposit in North America. This deposit, perhaps not coincidentally, lies underneath the sacred lands of Chi’chil Bildagoteel, roughly 50 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona. Resolution Copper is proposing a method called “blockade mining” to extract the ore. This would involve blasting a giant cavity underneath the copper deposit. The void created would allow copper to fall into carts, which would transport the ore up to the surface. [...] Through this process, an estimated 1.6 billion tons of toxic mine waste would be produced. After the mining is finished, a hole as deep as the Eiffel Tower is high would be created in the Earth’s surface, where the canyons, forests and springs at Oak Flat now lie in peace.

He's stuck on a scientific survey mission of indeterminate length, 7.8 light years from Earth. His only company on board the station are stern mission chief Minkowski, insane science officer Hilbert, and Hephaestus Station's sentient, often malfunctioning operating system Hera. He doesn't have much to do for his job other than monitoring static and intercepting the occasional decades-old radio broadcast from Earth, so he spends most of his time creating extensive audio logs about the ordinary, day-to-day happenings within the station. But the Hephaestus is an odd place, and life in extremely isolated, zero gravity conditions has a way of doing funny things to people's minds. Even the simplest of tasks can turn into a gargantuan struggle, and the most ordinary-seeming things have a way of turning into anything but that." --> [starts funny, turns very intense]
