El Makuto es un resguardo exclusivo de la regla de Palo Monte el cual es montado únicamente por un tata nganga/tata nkisi, este resguardo se debe montar frente a la nganga y con el respectivo permiso del fundamento, previa consulta/registro de la persona a la que se le montara el makuto. Estos resguardos tienen diferentes funciones se pueden hacer para abrir caminos, para protección, para el amor, para evolución, para salud, etc. Se puede entregar un Makuto a una persona que no tenga camino de palo así como a una que si tenga camino de palo o que este raya(o) inclusive.

Un Makuto se puede confeccionar de diferentes materiales según el camino que este lleve, se pueden confeccionar en caracoles, carapachos de tortugas, picos de aves marinas, semillas, bambúes, cuernos, cuero de un animal, piedras, corales, dientes de animales, inclusive se puede confeccionar mezclando todos los ingredientes juntos integrandolos en uno y convirtiendolos en el mismo makuto. Este maravilloso y muy efectivo resguardo del Palo Monte lleva en su interior diferentes elementos que vienen a darle la fuerza y espiritualidad que necesita que lleva el makuto, entre los elementos que se le pueden colocar según el camino que este lleve, se pueden mencionar matari(piedra), cuentas de colores, ntoto(tierra) de diferentes lugares, ntoto de Campo Finda (tierra de cementerio), nkunias(palos), hierbas, semillas de diferentes clases, piedras preciosas, agua de mar. agua de rio, agua de lluvia, agua sagrada, agua bendita, miel, ron, tabaco, humo de tabaco, aguardiente, chamba, vino seco, corojo, pimienta de guinea, 7 metales, imanes, polvo de oro, polvo de plata, algas, rastros de efectos personales de la persona, plumas de diferentes tipos, bichos, insectos, cabezas de diferente animales, cuando son makutos para personas que se encuentran a distancia se puede incluir una foto. Bien toda la carga dependerá del camino que lleve, las cargas que marque el nkisi y para que se esté elaborando dicho makuto o resguardo.
