The show really played Rhekker fans into thinking they were gonna reconcile in the finale after hurting us in the second half of Season 4
THEY WERE CRUEL TO DO WHAT THEY DID TO US!!!
Should have written off that someone from Cornelius's past to be the one that murdered him in revenge. He was a narcissist, wouldn't put it past him that he ruined people's live in secret. There were moments where he seemed very shady.
Given the nature of the show, they don't often go into sexual assault cases and technically it was NEVER officially confirmed what happened between Ava and Cornelius that night. And the way Ava kept trying to dodge the topic, tried avoid seeing him, as well as her change in personality.... that's something I've often seen on SVU with victims of sexual assault.
Each victim takes in trauma a different way and unless they get help from a healthy source, they're likely to turn out in a negative way. Like turn to prostitutions, drugs, psychopaths, even take their own lives. The abuse really messes with the person's mind and it's even harder for victims to get justice when their abuser is someone with lots of power. Sometimes they take matters in their own hands and kill their abuser themselves to find freedom from their hold on them.
Norma being a great actress, I really thought (even now) that Ava was raped by Cornelius that night. And her often being closed to others, keeping all her emotions in, not seeking help and pushing people away, finally took its toll in the end. RIP Ava Bekker 😢😭

An Incomplete List of Questions I'd Like to Ask the Chicago Med Writers
Where's Ethan's parrot?
What happened to Kol?
How come we never saw Claire Rhodes again?
How did she handle Cornelius' death?
What's Robin up to?
Is Anna Charles okay? I miss her.
What's going on with Denise Lockwood?
How come there's no queer doctors in your hospital?
Why is Crockett Marcel so fruity if you're not going to make him bi or pan?

He had that punch coming, honesty. Still wish they didn't ruin Ava's character development in this season.
If he was a better father and wanted to fix his relationship with Connor, he would have donated to get him to stay cause he wanted him to stay.
Oh, 💩

The Breakers Music Room —
The MUSIC ROOM, designed by Richard van der Boyen and Allard et Fil, reflects the French Baroque interior the Vanderbilts would have seen in places like the Paris Opera House, and was the setting for family weddings and debutante parties. Gold and silver leaf, blue-grey Campan marble from France, mirrors, and crystal light fixtures combine to make a glittering effect for evening concerts and receptions. The spirit of music and numerous great composers are celebrated in the ceiling painting. This room and furnishings, in addition to those in the Morning Room, were designed and constructed in France then shipped to this location for installation.
————————————————————————
The Breakers Morning Room —
The wall paneling in the MORNING ROOM was designed by Richard van der Boyen, who carved elaborate garlands and figures in the late Renaissance style. Classical mythology and allegories decorate this room, from the painted allegory of the four seasons on the ceiling, to the Muses who appear in the corners of the room, painted on platinum leaf panels.
The room also displays portraits of Cornelius Vanderbilt II by the preeminent American portrait painter, John Singer Sargent, and the Count Laszlo Széchényi and Countess Gladys Széchényi, by the Hungarian artist Philip Alexius De László. Countess Széchényi was born Gladys Vanderbilt, the youngest of Cornelius and Alice's children. In 1908, Gladys married Count Laszlo Széchényi, a member of Hungary's premier aristocratic family and a minister to the Court of St. James in London and, later, to the United States.
When her mother Alice passed away in 1934, Countess Széchényi inherited The Breakers. In 1948, to raise funds for the Preservation Society's restoration of Hunter House, Countess Széchényi opened The Breakers to the public for tours. That same year, she leased The Breakers to the Preservation Society for $1.00 a year and continued to fund the maintenance of the house. The Preservation Society purchased The Breakers in 1972 for approximately $400,000. As an early member and supporter of the Preservation Society, Countess Széchényi made a major contribution to the preservation of Newport's architectural heritage.
——————————————————————————
The Breakers Breakfast / Dining Room —
The BREAKFAST ROOM served as both breakfast room and informal family dining room. The table, which may be extended to seat 16 would have seated the entire family or served as seating for a small, informal dinner or luncheon. One of the premier decorators for America's elite families, Jules Allard et Fils Cules Allard & Sons) of Paris, supplied the Louis XV style furniture for the room and decided on the room's color scheme. The Vanderbilts were surrounded by imagery of the harvest.
Look around to see fruits and vegetables plentifully adorning the walls. The 12 rose-colored stone columns are solid alabaster and draw your eyes upward to the ceiling painting of the goddess Aurora heralding the dawn. The massive chandeliers and wall sconces in the Imperial design are made of French Baccarat crystal, and were piped for gas and wired for electricity at the time the house was built. The crown shaped tops indicate the style, while the rings on the chains were used to adjust the flow of gas.
Allard and Sons of Paris assisted Hunt with furnishings and fixtures, Austro-American sculptor Karl Bitter designed relief sculpture, and Boston architect Ogden Codman decorated the family quarters. The mansion covers nearly an acre of the 13-acre property and has 70 rooms including 48 bedrooms for family and staff. There are 27 fireplaces. It was equipped with electricity – still a novelty in houses during the Gilded Age – as well as gas for lighting.
The Breakers has entertained presidents, royalty and guests from across the world for more than 125 years and today is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year. It is the flagship of the Newport Mansions and a world-famous iconic image of the City-by-the-Sea. The Breakers was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994.

Big Brother to the Rescue
Summary: You, Y/N Rhodes, get really sick during the night and have to be taken to the hospital. You're dad is not around and Claire is out of town so you turn to the only person you trust, your big brother, Connor Rhodes.
Pairings: Connor Rhodes x Sister!Reader
Warnings: angst, fluff, cussing, inaccurate medical talk, fever, vomit, hospitals
Masterlist
You loved your brother, Connor Rhodes, to death and he loved you the same, maybe even more. You love your sister, Claire Rhodes, too but not as much as you loved Connor. They practically raised you. Your living situation was not good. Your father, Cornelius Rhodes, was a massive jerk and your mother passed away when you were young. You looked up to Clarie as a mother figure and Connor as a father figure. Connor was only 16 when you were born and he instantly fell in love with you and was proud to be the big brother and jumped at every chance to help out with you. He was the best big brother you could ask for. Clarie was the best sister you could ask for too but it wasn't a bond like you and Connor had.
Growing up was not the most pleasant and it turned worse when your mother passed. When Connor turned 18, he tried so hard to get custody over you but it was quickly shot down even though he had a steady income and home but your dad was so powerful that he made it not happen. It also didn't help that Connor was going to medical school and wasn't home a lot but it could've worked, you still visited him often and had a lot of sleepovers with him plus it was a place for you to escape from your dad. When your guys’ dad started to criticize him for his medical school he had enough and moved to a different state but that didn't stop you from contacting him all the time and taking trips, when you were allowed, down to see him in Guadalajara, Mexico. It broke your heart that he moved but your bond never weakened and when he spent his residency in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, you weren't allowed to visit him but video calling was a daily routine. He hated that he couldn't bring you with him but he didn't have custody and it would be too much hassle to get you over to Saudi Arabia whereas Mexico was a little easier.
—------
When Connor finally came back to Chicago, you were 12, you were ecstatic you finally had your father figure back. You caught him up on everything and while he was away. Claire resented him for leaving but she could never be mad at you. She would do everything to protect you, if you had girl questions or boy problems you were going to her. Your dad couldn't give a shit about you, sure he fed you and gave you a roof over your head but he didn't want you and he could care less about you. So, when Connor came back and started working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center for his fellowship for trauma surgery fellowship everything went back to normal. Your daily meetups, sleepovers, and going to him for problems and medical issues started right back up like he never left. He still tried to get custody but it failed every time but he wasn't going to stop fighting for you, they wouldn't let him have you even if you said you wanted to live with him.
—------
When you were 13 you had gotten really sick like hospital sick. It was a night that Connor wasn't working and you were just in agony. Claire had moved out and your father was at a charity thing leaving you home alone. It started in the middle of the night waking you up from a dead sleep. You desperately tried to call your dad but it just went to voicemail so you tried one more time and he answered
“Dad, I don't feel good.” You told him.
“What's wrong?” He asked and this gave a you some hope.
“My stomach really hurts. I feel like I'm going to throw up. I feel hot.” You said
“Suck it up. There is medicine in the cabinet downstairs.” He said and hung up and you let out a sob.
You pulled yourself off your bed and dragged yourself to the steps and took painful steps down the steps. You sobbed the entire time. You finally got to the kitchen and opened the cabinet and grabbed the painkillers and you took them. Almost immediately as it touched your stomach you were throwing up everywhere. You were so weak. So weak that you just ended up collapsing onto the kitchen floor just barely missing your throw up. Thankfully you had grabbed your phone and slowly and shakingly grabbed your phone, your vision blurring. You unlocked it and pulled up your contacts and hit one you knew all too well. It rang not even once and Connor's voice came through.
“Y/N/N? It's 3 AM. What's wrong?” He asked in a voice full of concern.
“I... I... I don't feel good.” You said your teeth were chattering because despite your temperature, you were freezing.
“Where's dad? Did you tell him?” He asked and you could hear him rustling around.
“He's at a charity event. I... I called him and told him but he told me to suck it up and take the medicine in the cabinet in the kitchen. I'm in so much pain, Con. I took the medicine and immediately threw it up.” You told him the feeling of the cold floor was nice.
“Bastard.” He murmured “I'm on my way. You stay put.” He said.
“I'm hot but so cold.” You said letting your eyes droop. “So tired.” You added.
“Hey, stay on the phone with me. Why didn't you call Clarie? She lives closer.” He asked
“She's gone out of town.” You said and you could hear him get into his car and the engine start.
“Son of a bitch.” He said and started to drive as fast as he could while still obeying the speed limit. He kept talking to you but you stopped responding and that scared him. He hung up when he arrived at your guys’ family home. He was quick to jump out and run to the front door and grab the key under the mat and opened it.
The house was dark but he knew where you were at. “Y/N/N. It's me.” He yelled out but got no response. He walked into the kitchen and saw you lying there. “Fuck.” He murmured to himself and ran over to you missing your vomit. He kneeled down and touched your forehead and retracted his hand “Damn, Sis. You're burning up.” He said. He walked over to the drawer and grabbed the thermometer and thankfully it was on that stuck in your ear. He put it there and waited for it to beep and when it did, he cursed and read it aloud “104.3. Fuck I need to take you in.” He said and started to try and wake you up. “Y/N/N, Sweetheart. It's me. Your brother. Can you open your eyes?” He asked as he pressed two fingers to your neck. “Damn, pulse is way too fast.” He said and him talking must've started to rouse you.
“Con?” You asked and he smiled softly.
“Yea it's me. Can you open your eyes?” He asked and you cracked them open until they were open. “There we go.” He said.
“Tired.” You said and started to close again.
“No. Hey, keep those eyes open. I'm going to take you to Med, Ok?” He asked and you nodded.
“Ok. Go see Will?” You asked and he smiled. Will has become a favorite of yours and he doesn’t know why.
“Yes. We'll go see Will.” He said as he started to stand you and your legs shook like a newborn foal's standing for the first time. Can you walk?” He asked.
“I don’t know.” You said in barely just a whisper and you tried to take a few steps and all but collapsed into his arms.
“That is a no.” He said and then he was scooping you up into his arms and walking out of the house and to his car. He got you in the passenger side seat and then him in the driver’s seat and he was off heading to Med as fast as he could. He continued to talk to you to keep you awake and before you knew it you were pulling into Med. He parked and turned the car off and got out heading to the passenger side seat. He quickly scooped you up and shut the door hastily. He rushed you into ED where he saw Maggie. “Mags.” He said and she looked up at him and quickly rushed you into a bay. “She wants Will.” He said and she nodded. She walked out of the room and went to get Will not even a second later he was rushing into the room.
“Connor? What is going on?” He asked
“She called me saying she didn’t feel good and when I asked her what was wrong, she told me she was hot but so cold. She said she took some medicine but once she took it, she immediately threw up. When I got there, she was passed out on the floor next to a pile of vomit. She was burning up to the touch, she had and still has according to the monitor a temperature of 104.3 and her pulse was fast, way too fast.” He explained as they could see from the monitor “She also said she was really tired. I woke her up and had her stand and she shook like a life, she tried to walk but she collapsed into my arms and then I quickly got her in the car and rushed her here.” He finished.
“Why isn’t Cornelius here instead?” Will asked
“He is at a charity event. Left her by herself. She called him and told him she was sick but he told her to suck it up and take the medicine in the cabinet.
“Bastard.” Will said
“That’s what I said.” Connor said
“I want to get an ultrasound done on her stomach to rule out appendicitis.” Will said and Connor nodded.
“I agree.” Connor said and soon Will was calling in the ultrasound machine and he got to work with the help of a nurse. “So, it is not appendicitis.” Connor confirmed and Will nodded.
“I want to run some tests on her. Swab for flu and viral infection and take some blood as well.” He said and Connor nodded. Throughout this entire process you had been out and now that you were in the hospital you were allowed to sleep. “I want to get some fluids running to help with her temperature and get some IV children’s Tylenol on board as well.” He said and again Connor nodded. As the nurse was preparing everything you started to wake up.
“Will?” You asked and he smiled and looked over at you.
“Hey, Sweetheart. We’re going to get you feeling better, ok? I just want to run some tests.” He said and you nodded.
“Ok.” You said and then you saw the needles “Con, no.” You said and shook your head but that was a mistake because it hurt your head.
“Hey it is ok. I’ll be here the entire time. Ok?” He asked and you nodded and then he nodded at the nurse and Will and everyone got to work. Soon blood was taken, fluids were hooked up, and swabs were taken.
“Get those tests going ASAP.” Will told the nurse and she nodded and they were out of the room. Will had to tend to some other patients and you both understood and they let you go back to sleep. With the fluids going your pulse was starting to come up and it was steady since you were sleeping and your temperature was starting to come down and the IV children’s Tylenol helped with that. 20 minutes later Will was coming in.
“So?” Connor asked
“She has a really bad viral infection and she has a really bad case of the flu. I want to get her admitted and keep her here for a few days.” Will said
“This had to be going on for a few days.” Connor said
“Did she not tell you anything about it?” He asked and Connor shook his head.
“No, she didn’t look sick when we met up a couple of days ago.” Connor said, sighing and Will nodded.
“Let’s get her moved.” Will said and so they did.
The next time you were waking up, 3 hrs. after coming into ED, you were waking up in a room. “Connor?” You asked sluggishly.
“Hey, Sis. I’m here.” He said coming over to you as he entered the room with a cup of coffee.
“Where am I?” You asked and he smiled and came over and sat next to you.
“In the hospital. You have a really bad case of the flu and a bad viral infection. Will is taking care of you and has you on antibiotics.” He said and you nodded and you were struggling to keep your eyes open.
“Dad?” You asked
“Not here.” He said and to be honest he didn’t want him here. He hadn’t even thought about him since you arrived here and boy was, he going to have some words for him. “Go back to sleep.” He said and you nodded and were out like a light and he could tell because your heart rate slowed. Now it was time to have some words for his father. He made sure you were asleep before pulling his phone out and stepping out of the room where he saw Will. “Hey, I need to make a phone call. Mind staying with her?” He asked and Will smiled.
“Of course.” He said and walked into the room with you and Connor walked into the doctor’s lounge and dialed his dad’s phone number and he rang 5 times before he answered. Cornelius didn’t even have time to say hi before Connor started to rail into him.
“Do you know where your daughter is?” Connor asked
“No, but she has made a mess in the kitchen she needs to clean up.” Cornelius said and Connor saw red.
“She’s in the hospital because she has a bad case of the flu and a bad case of a viral infection.” Connor said venom in his words.
“Well, she needs to get home now and clean the mess up.” He said
“She will be doing no such thing. Not anymore.” Connor said
“And why is that?” Cornelius asked
“Because she is coming to live with me. I was the one that found her when she called and told me what was going on while you were too busy at a charity event. She told you she was sick and you told her to suck it up. You told her to take the medicine in the cabinet and she instantly threw it up. She was running a 104.3 fever when I found her and she couldn’t even stand or walk. She was so weak. I’m filing for sole custody of her and you’re going to sign it because you are not fit to be a father let alone a guardian. You will not be coming to see her. You will not see her at all unless she is with me or have contact with her. That is final.” He went off on him. Cornelius was silent by the time he was done.
“Fine. Keep the bitch. I don’t care. I’ll have her stuff packed and waiting for you to pick it up.” He said and then hung up the phone. Connor was relieved now he needed to start the paperwork. He let out a sigh of relief.
Connor walked back to your room and saw you wake and sitting up talking to Will. You looked over and saw him. You still looked tired but you were awake. “Where were you?” You asked.
“I was on the phone with dad.” He said
“I’ll leave the two of you alone. I will be back in a few to check on you.” Will said, directing that last sentence to you. You and Connor nodded and Will left.
“Is he coming?” You asked and he shook his head.
“No.” He said and you looked relieved “I have good news though.” He said and you perked up.
“Oh?” You asked curious and he nodded.
“From now on you will be coming to live with me and you won’t see him or talk to him.” Connor said and your face brightened.
“Really?” You asked and he nodded.
“Really.” He said and you squealed in excitement. Your wish was finally coming true. You were going to be living with your big brother. You then started to go on about all the things you two could do together and he smiled and nodded. You suddenly stopped talking and looked at him and smiled. “What?” He asked.
“I love you, Con.” You said and he smiled.
“I love you too, Y/N/N. Now and forever.” He said and he leaned over to kiss your forehead.
“Now and forever.” You confirmed. Your wish did come true and you couldn’t be happier.

I need to know this because of the reasons
Okay, I need to name my character something as pompous as possible. If it will also be old-fascinated - bonus points. Several middle names - double points.
A little bit about this asshole.

General information:
Cis, Heterosexual, Male
Late 20s
Genius level intelligence
Polarian (as in "citizen of the Circumpolar Empire"), ethnically he is Rifean.
His family is of a high social standing. Kinda, think aristocrats but from science&magic rather than traditional bureaucracy or army.
Naturally wavy light brown hair. Also light hair + black eyebrows/eyelashes/black freckles combo. Such contrast (with or without freckles that can be any colour) is typical for all well-bred people in his home country.
Light grey eyes
Tall long noodle - 7ft, also 70% made of legs
Dry, sinewy built
Vicious dancer
Polyglot - speaks 8 languages, of which 5 are human languages and 3 monster ones.
Can pack a punch like you won't believe
Ambivert - is somewhere in the middle between extrovert and introvert
Ambidextrous - either was trained to be one, so it's no possible to say as what he started as or he was always one. Nobody knows,, not even him.
Works hard, parties even harder
Perfectionist
Dapper block. Likes to dress up nicely AND knows how to.
Has no patience with stupidity, real or percieved
Sense of humour at times dry as desert
Gallant knight & gentleman if you happened to be a woman, quite a prick if you happened to be a man. Non-binaries are met with a polite lack of interest (they are not a thing where he lives but he met some though his field of work).
Likes non-human women. A lot. (As you might have guessed one of the storylines is him trying to woo a certain monster lady with varying results). (ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ.゚
Aside from that, unethical experiments and general science dickery, he is a monstruwakan. What means a person who studies monsters of the world. Yes in all possible ways, including the unspeakable ones. Now you understand now what sort of people work in this department? But when your world is infested by all kinds of monstrosities that's the only way.
Also he kinda always wanted to be a monster himself but alas he was born a human.
However, given his general issues with perfection and perfectionism, it's really amusing that he turned out to be relatively normal; can't say the same about his siblings, though.
Favourite taste(s) - sour
Favourite color(s) - blue-green
Favourite musical instrument(s) - flute
Favourite time of day - night
Favourite weather - heavy rain
Favourite animal - gyrfalcon
Nature element - wood
Zodiac sign - Capricorn

Hickey knife details + other similar knives! B/c a lot of people only know about his.
So, like, I think us The Terror enjoyers all know about the Hickey knife:
This isn't the only piece of cutlery marked by Cornelius Hickey, but it's the only one with his full name on it. His initials are at the back, as well!
His neatness is distinctive- I'm not sure if he was literate, but given how he previously worked as a carpenter on the HMS Belvidera (Which many FE members including John Irving, Alexander Macdonald, and the Erebus' Caulker's mate, Fracis Dunn, also previously served on,) he's certainly got experience with woodwork and it shows.
Here are pictures of the other ivory/bone handled knives which have initials carved onto them.
Magnus Manson, though this is a bit debatable.
Most likely Richard "Dick" Wall, a cook. Another knife, "WR" (William Reed or William Rhodes) didn't have a good photo of it unfortunately. Here it is at the bottom, slightly to the left- you can kind of make it out! It seems like Mr WR is also a neat carver.
Perhaps they traveled together and wanted to mark their own cutlery instead of using it communally? These knives were purchased from different groups of Inuit in different areas, but they might've traded hands many times.

The Ides of March
By George Edward Robertson b. 1864 - Art UK - https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/mark-antonys-oration-over-the-body-of-caesar-56885
The old Roman months were divided into between 23-31 days, depending on the month and the year. Typically, the month began with a nonas (or nones), which was eight days, or nine days the way the Romans counted, the first one counting up to the nonas (days 1-7), the days leading up to the idus (or ides), then the final two counting up to the kalendas (or kalends), or first day of the month. The nundinae, between the first and second nonas, which were a type of weekend, were market days. Those market days had to be announced 3 weeks (between 17-24 days) before on the Idus of the month previous, or there would be no market day that month. The kalends was determined by the sighting of the first sliver of the moon after the new moon and the nonas happening on the day of the first quarter, and the ides on the full moon.
In 46 BCE, Julius Caesar reformed the calendar, ending the previous chaos of years that were between 355-378 days long. Ten days were added to the short 'regular' year with an extra day added every four years, bringing the year to 365 days as of 45 BCE. He left intact the system of the pre-existing Roman months.
By Ángel M. Felicísimo from Mérida, España - Retrato de Julio César, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=91281949
Gaius Julius Caesar was born on 12 July 100 BCE to a patrician family, gens Julia, claiming descent from Venus by his ancestor Julus, the son of Aeneas, who founded Alba Longa in central Italy. Despite claims that have been made, it is exceedingly unlikely that he was born via Caesarian section because at that time in Italy, it would have caused the death of the mother and his mother lived for decades after his birth. At the time of his birth, Caesar's family wasn't very prominent in Roman politics.
In his youth, Caesar was appointed as flamen Dialis, or a high priest of Jupiter, which normally placed a taboo on having a political career. Such an appointment shows that his family did not expect much of him. He was married to the daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna, Cornelia. In 84 BCE, his father died suddenly. In 82 BCE, Caesar was ordered to abdicate and divorce by Sulla, who'd won the civil war named after him. Caesar refused, thereby questioning Sulla's legitimacy. In retribution, Sulla might have put Caesar on the proscription list and Caesar went into hiding. They reached a compromise where Caesar would abdicate but keep his wife and 'chattels'.
He then traveled to Bithynia as a member of staff to the governor of Asia, where he eared the mocking epithet 'the Queen of Bithynia' for rumored relations with King Nicomedes IV. He served as part of the Siege of Mytilene, where he earned the civic crown, a military honor given to those who save the lives of their fellow citizens, and that ignited Caesar's hunger for more accolades. He returned home after the death of Sulla in 78 BCE. He attacked some of Sulla's cohorts, only semi-succeeding in one case against a less well connected senator, charging them with profiteering.
He left for Rhodes after failing to learn rhetoric with Apollonius Molon. It was on the trip there that he was kidnapped by pirates. Though legend says that his ransom was 50 talents and that he then executed the pirates, both are embellishments and the pirates were more likely enslaved.
In 73 BCE, Caesar was co-opted to take his dead relatives place in the pontifaces, the most illustrious college of priests. It marked him as well-accepted and having great future prospects for a political career. While he was on his way back to Rome, he was elected a military tribune, the rank between legate and centurion. No evidence currently exists that Caesar saw military action during his term of service, though he continued to agitate against any of Sulla's effects on the government.
He was sent to serve under Gaius Antistius Vetus for his quaestorship in 69 BCE, which also gave him a permanent seat on the Senate. Before he could leave, his aunt Julia died and shortly after his wife Cornilia died, leaving Caesar's only legitimate child, Julia as a new born. Caesar remarried to Sulla's granddaughter Pompeia.
Caesar spent the next period of his life supporting Pompey, including on the restoration of tribunician rights, the lex Gabinia, which gave Pompey command against piracy within 50 miles of the Roman-held lands, and the lex Manilia, which made Pompey command in the war against the Mithridates. In 65 BCE, he served as cururle aedile and staged games for his Aunt Julia, earning more popular support.
In 63 BCE, he became praetor and pontifex maximus, likely due to bribery and fawning, though without charges laid against him, leading to the belief that it wasn't enough to tip him over the edge. He used his praetorship, he used a lot of his time working against those he deemed enemies, such as Catulus.
After his praetorship, Caesar was sent to Hispania Ulterior, the part of southern Spain leaning to the Strait of Gibraltar, to be governor. He was broke at this time and needed more than just his salary and beyond the normal extortion of the locals, so he seized northwestern Spain, seizing enough to pay his debts.
In 60 BCE, Caesar was up for election to the consulship, one of two chief elected officials, so he was forced to chose between being in place for the election by giving up command or to have a triumph march for his victories in Hispania and give up the election. He chose the consulship.
He served with Marcus Calpurnius Bibulus, though his former enemies now supporters Pompey and Crasus formed an alliance known as the 'First Triumvirate'. His first act as consul in 60 BCE was to make the Senate and assemblies minutes to the public, showing support for Senate accountability. He then set up a way for willing sellers to sell their land for veterans, especially for those who served under Pompey, and the urban poor. His next act was to reduce Crassus' arrears taxes. He continued to be both radical and curry favors with other during his term, which caused a rift with Bibulus, who was a conservative, though it generally made him popular. Pompey married Julia, his daughter, during this time as well.
After his year as consul, he wrote the ten volume Commentaries from 58-52 BCE, which was and still is considered a literary masterwork. It was both biographical of his own campaigns and supportive of the ongoing Gallic wars in which he was fighting. Part of his success was that the Gauls were not a united group so he was able to exploit their divisions. Until 54 BCE, Caesar was paying for these campaigns himself, out of the plunder of his armies' victories.
During Ceasar's time in Gaul, Roman politics were in chaos with many groups trying to hold the sway over politics, with groups trying to undo Ceasar's reforms, especially his land reform, and those who upheld them. During this time, as well, there was a weakening of the Triumvirate's agreement, but it was strengthened again when Pompey and Crassus wanted their own military honors.
Beginning in 52 BCE, Caesar and Pompey's trust broke down. Cato and the conservatives wanted to have Pompey talk Caesar into going back to Rome even though he was still battling the Gauls, without honors and a consulship. While the order to come back to Rome was vetoed by the Senate, Cato and Bibulus did manage to talk Pompey to their side against Caesar. Fears of civil war began to grow in Rome, so Caesar and his opponents began building up their armies in Gaul and Northern Italy. On 1 December 50 BCE, an formal disarmament of both sides was overwhelmingly passed by the Senate, but with the support of only one consul, it was not passed.
In 49 BCE, it was rumored that Caesar was going to march on Rome and Pompey was ordered to defend Rome against him. Caesar offered to disarm if Pompey did as well, which was rejected by Senate. Caesar began his march on Rome, caught between exile and civil war. He wanted to secure his second consulship and a triumph. He believed that his opponents would refuse to ratify his election if they even allowed him to run. He felt this would also suppress the liberty of the Roman people. So, around the 10th or 11th of January 49 BCE, Caesar crossed the Rubicon, the river that defined the northern border of Italy.
After this, Pompey and many senators fled south, Pompey going as far as to flee to Greece, since Caesar's army was superior to what they had the support of. Facing little opposition, Caesar kept his army around Rome for two weeks. He seized the treasury and left Lepidus in charge of Italy before moving his armies to Spain to defeat Pompey's armies there. Returning to Rome in the autumn, he had Lepidus declare him dictator, a magistrate who was meant to serve to resolve a specific issue, to conduct elections. He held the position for eleven days. He and Publius Servillius Isauricus won the elections.
After that, Caesar left Italy to go to Greece to stop Pompey's preparations to march on Italy against Caesar. Caesar set siege to Pompey at Dyrrhachium, but Pompey was able to escape, fleeing to southern Greece with Caesar following him until they engaged in battle at Pharsalus on 9 August 48 BCE. Pompey then fled to Egypt, and Cato fled to Africa. Cicero and Marcus Junius Brutus begged pardon.

Pompey was killed in Egypt three days before Caesar arrived on 2 October 48 BCE. With the Etesian winds, strong north winds, keeping him in Egypt, Caesar sought to arbitrate the Egyptian civil war between Ptolemy XIII Theos Phiopater and Cleopatra, his sister/wife/co-regent queen. In late October, he was appointed in absentia as dictator for a full year. He also began an affair with Cleopatra. With the defeat of Ptolemy at the Battle of the Nile, Cleopatra was installed as ruler of Egypt, celebrating with a triumphal procession along the Nile. In June or July, Caesar left Egypt, with Cleopatra giving birth to Caesarion in June.
On his way back from Egypt, he heard that King Pharnaces was attempting to reclaim his father's lands from Rome. Caesar fought him in Zela, defeating him, where Caesar wrote 'veni vidi vici' (I came, I saw I conquered), downplaying Pompey's victories in the area. He then quickly turned to Italy.
While Caesar was absent from Rome, Mark Antony was magister equitum, his lieutenant as dictator, in charge, though he was rather unpopular. After agitation for debt relief by Publius Cornelius Dolabella got out of hand, Antony was removed from his position. He then suppressed riots by force, making him more unpopular. When Caesar returned to Italy, he demoted Antony and was able to pacify the mutineers without further violence, and then oversaw elections in 47 BCE, as well as confiscating and selling his enemies' properties. He went to Africa next, seeking to defeat Cato's forces, which they did, but Cato committed suicide rather than put himself at Caesar's mercy. Many of those who were against Caesar also committed suicide shortly afterwards as well. He narrowly won the battle at Munda on 17 March 45 BCE, effectively ending the war.
In February 44 BCE, Caesar was appointed dictator perpetuo after being appointed dictator for a year for the previous three years. He was also given many honors, including the 'praefectus moribus' (prefect of morals), allowing him to revise the Senate rolls through the census, and the power of war and peace. He was the first living mortal to have his portrait on Roman coins, as well as rights to royal dress and a golden chair in Senate. He also had the month of Quintillis renamed Julius (July) in his honor. All of these gave him the trappings of royalty, which led to later resentment.
While Caesar was given such sweeping powers, he did not make sweeping changes to Roman society. His major reforms were to the calendar, replacing the previous lunisolar calendar with the solar Julian calendar, and to increase the numbers of senators from 600 to 900. He also founded colonies to help alleviate overcrowding in Rome and Italy to help reduce unrest.
Beginning in January of 44 BCE, there were efforts to call Caesar 'rex' (king), were shut down by the two tribunes. Caesar accused the tribunes of infringing on his honor and had them removed from office and Senate. This angered the people, seeming to go against the reason Caesar had pursued civil war. Just before 15 February 44 BCE, he took the dictatorship for life, claiming the title more permanently than the ten years that had been granted him and showing he had no intention of restoring the republic.
While he rejected the diadem, the symbol of kingship, when offered by Mark Antony during Lupercalia, exactly why is uncertain. It might have been due to lack of supporters in the crowd, or it might have been performative, to deny he was a king.
The plans for assassination began in the summer of 45 BCE, with attempts to recruit Mark Antony at this time. While Antony declined to join in, he also didn't warn Caesar. By February 44 BCE, there were about 60 conspirators, and it was obvious that support of Caesar was on the wane, with some of his former supporters joining the conspiracy. Many of the conspirators were also those who could have run for consul from 43-41 BCE, likely disappointed by Caesar's sham elections, which would have affected the following elections.
Brutus, who claimed descent from Lucius Junius Brutus, who drove out the kings of Rome, freeing it from tyranny, was the leader of the conspiracy. In 45 BCE, graffiti and public comments were made insinuating Caesar was a tyrant, implying that Brutus should free them. Some of the underlying issues included Caesar's debt reforms being too advantageous to lenders, the use of force to suppress protests for debt relief, reduction of grain dole, a social safety net, and his abolition of open elections.

While there was some news leaked about the conspiracy, Caesar didn't take any precautions, rejecting a bodyguard escort. The date of 15 March 44 BCE was decided on since Caesar was going to leave on campaign three days later, forcing the conspirator's hand. There are several stories about the exact day, from Caesar almost didn't attend or was warned about the plot, whether he died silently or said 'kai su teknon' (you too, child) to Brutus' presence. He was stabbed at least 23 times and died at once.
The assassins were seized immediately and were coldly recieved by the population. Lepidus moved troops into the city, and the Senate House was burned. Mark Antony was summoned to the senate and managed to work a compromise in which the conspirators wouldn't be punished and those who were not appointed by Caesar would keep their office. This compromise was an effort to prevent further cracks in the government and diminishing the goals of the conspirators. Regardless, Caesar's death precipitated the end of the Roman Republic.

She wasn't wrong about that part
His dad had lost interest in funding the hybrid OR once Ava said he would be running the program
If he truly did care about his son, he would have wanted him to stay and once again attempt to try and fix things between them
The whole plot with Cornelius should have just never happened at all. Should have gone with him trying to be buddies with Ava's father instead. I could see him be on good terms with her father (if they had gone with Norma's idea of Ava's backstory)

One of the most besieged islands

The Castle of Lipari (Lìpari in Sicilian), located on the island of the same name in the Aeolian archipelago, is a fortress dating back to the 16th century, whose history has witnessed numerous historical events over the centuries. Its history dates back to antiquity, when the island was known as Meligunis.
According to Diodorus Siculus, the first Greek colony was founded around 580-577 BC by colonists from Cnidus and the island of Rhodes, under the direction of Pentathlus, a Cnidian. This colony prospered, but had to defend itself against Tyrrhenian pirates, creating a fleet that defeated the Etruscans on several occasions.
During the First Punic War (264-241 BC), Lipari became a Carthaginian naval base. In 260 BC, the Roman consul Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio attempted to capture the island, but was surprised and captured by the Carthaginians in what is known as the Battle of the Lipari Islands. This was the first naval engagement of the Punic Wars and was notable for the Romans' inexperience in naval combat.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lipari suffered several invasions. In 838, the Muslims devastated the island and deported its inhabitants, leaving it uninhabited for two centuries.
It was not until the arrival of the Normans in 1083 that repopulation began, with the establishment of Benedictine monks who founded a monastery. Pope Urban II granted lordship of the islands to the monastery in 1091, and Abbot Ambrosio promulgated a constitution in 1095 that granted the inhabitants property and inheritance rights over the lands they cultivated, thus encouraging repopulation.
Lipari was attacked by the Ottoman corsair Khayr al-Din Barbarossa in 1544, who, with a fleet of 150 ships, sacked the island after besieging it. The great cathedral was burned and some of the 8,000 inhabitants were captured. This devastation led Emperor Charles V to order the construction of defensive walls in the city and to encourage repopulation, attracting settlers from regions such as Calabria and Campania.
The danger of new attacks by the Turks did not disappear until the beginning of the 18th century, with the island already incorporated into the Kingdom of Sicily since 1589. Later, it were incorporated into the new Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, to finally be part of the new kingdom that unified all of Italy in the mid-19th century.

The Breakers Newport Mansion —
Built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, one of the richest men in America, The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages." The Breakers was everything a millionaire of the Gilded Age could want in a summer getaway. The Breakers was built from 1893-1895 to replace a smaller, wooden house that had been destroyed by a fire. To reduce the risk of another fire, Vanderbilt and his wife, Alice, commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt, a leading architect of the Gilded Age, to design the new structure of steel, brick and limestone; utilities such as the boilers were placed underground and away from the house.
The Vanderbilt's summer home was modeled on Italian Renaissance palaces with open air courtyards, the finest American and European craftsmanship, and modern technology combined to make the ideal setting for luxurious living and entertaining.
——————————————————————————
The Breakers Great Hall —
The GREAT HALL is the largest room in this house, measuring approximately 50 feet wide by 50 feet long by 50 feet high. The ceiling is painted to look like the sky, which along with the large doors that open to the ocean breezes evokes the feeling that you are outdoors. Looking up at the ceiling, you will see four blue-green medallions with the acorn and oak leaf inside. This is the Vanderbilt family symbol of strength and longevity and can be seen in many places throughout the house.
Many parties were held in this room over the years, with the first being in 1895 for Miss Gertrude Vanderbilt. Over the years, this hall was the scene of tricycle rides and sliding down the grand staircase on silver dinner trays by children in the family.
The house stands as a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial power in 19th and early 20th century America - a period known as The Gilded Age, when the nation became a world economic power. The Vanderbilts were prominent in the worlds of society, sport, business, fashion, and cultural life. The term, "Gilded Age" referred not only to the great wealth produced by vast economic and industrial growth in the years following the Civil War (1861 - 1865), but also the social changes and inequities that were growing at the same rate as the American economy. This wealth was seen in opulent buildings and the Vanderbilts were among the country's greatest builders.
