it's hot (when you have a meltdown)

“I think you’re being paranoid.”

Ava rolls her eyes, leaving the bathroom and heading into the bedroom, where she finds Connor muttering about their work day. Apparently, after he’d given her the key to his apartment earlier that morning, Dr. Lanik had told him that once their relationship had fizzled out, to “let him know”. 

Connor wasn’t a fan of that. No. way. 

It’s funny– Ava’s seen him act negatively before, but not like this. She’s seen him defensive, bitter, and of course, jealous, yet this is new, different. It’s possessive and overprotective, in a way. She likes it.

(But she can’t admit that. She hasn’t had the full pleasure of mocking him for this yet).

“I– I am not being paranoid,” Connor interjects, pointing an accusatory finger at her. He sits on the end of his bed, scrubs still on from his shift. He’s not been home for long, and all he’s done is complain about Lanik. He makes it sound like the chief of the ED is trying to conspire against him. “However, that guy’s an egotistical maniac. And now he thinks he can just– he can steal my girlfriend?”

Ava holds back a laugh at his ridiculous accusation, leaning against the doorframe. He’s overreacting, sure, and it makes him look like a petulant child.

In a way, she gets it. Here’s someone who has gone (almost) his whole life getting his way, and now, when faced with the possibility of losing something he’s worked for, it’s hard to comprehend it. However, having a semi-breakdown over the fact that someone has feelings for your girlfriend, despite her being very much in love with you, is laughable. Hilarious, in fact.

And Ava just can’t help but poke the bear.

"Wait– are you jealous?" She teases, a smirk appearing on her face. She can't hold it back, watching as his jaw tenses. "Well I’ll be; you're totally jealous!"

“I– I am not!” Connor argues back, slightly outraged. He’s standing up now, practically pacing back and forth. If he doesn’t quit this now, he’ll wear a hole in the rug. He continues to go on about Lanik, and how he’s the worst of the worst, and some other stuff that’s frankly a bit incomprehensible. But Ava doesn’t care about that; she’s enjoying the show she’s being given, even if it does involve her boyfriend being insecure.

She shakes her head, her hair hiding her face. “Okay, you’re definitely overreacting now.” She mutters, so he doesn’t hear her. She walks over to him, hands on his shoulders, and pushes him back onto the bed.

“It’s refreshing, seeing you like this,” She smiles at him, grinning wildly. “Reminds me that even though you’re rich, you’re at least half-human, somehow.”

“..Is that meant to make me feel better?” Connor cocks his head to the side, looking up at her. It’s evident that he doesn’t find this at all amusing, at least not like she does– his brows are furrowed, just the same way they are when he’s focusing in surgery, his eyes in a half-glare. 

“What, don’t you trust me?” Ava flutters her eyes at her as he pulls her closer to him, hands firm on her waist, slight butterflies filling her stomach. 

“I trust you,” Connor states bluntly. “I just don’t trust him.” And before she can answer him, his lips are on hers. They’re like fire; burning her up and up the more he hungers for her kiss, his touch red hot. He’s eager, desperate, to taste her. Even though they’re alone, it’s like he’s trying to show her off, something that he’s wanted for a long time.

“Connor–” She gasps, once his lips pull away, giving her a second to breathe, her body on top of his. “This doesn’t seem like you’re trying to convince me that you’re okay.”

She’s not entirely sure why she’s checking, despite how eager she is for him. However, she can’t help but overthink it, fighting between not wanting to give herself up to the egotistical, arrogant man in front of her, and wanting to give herself up completely.

He grins at her, the same one that makes her swoon, letting out a small chuckle as he shakes his head, almost as if she’s crazy for even asking him that. “I’ve been waiting for this all day.. ‘course I fucking am.” He breathes out, pressing kisses on her lips that slowly begin to trail downwards; her  cheek, her jaw, then her neck, sending chills throughout her entire body.

She’s over-so sensitive when it comes to his touch, and, paired with his kisses, his wandering hands cause her to shiver, chilling her to the bone. She shudders slightly at the feeling of his lips on her neck, a light moan escaping her mouth as his teeth gently sink into her skin, biting her like she’s a ripe peach, tearing at the sweetness.

Ava sighs. “Wait,” She attempts to relax, break away from him– he’s like a drug, pulling her back in, desperate for the high he gives her. “I have work in a few– I can’t go out if you do that.” She attempts to protest, hoping he understands.

And that, he does.

Connor pulls away for a split second, eyes looking up at her as he asserts himself confidently; the same man she’s always known.

“I don’t care what Lanik, or anyone, says,” He mutters darkly, before smiling at her, teeth bared, ready to take what’s his. “You’re still my girl.”

Ava closes her eyes for a moment, before turning to him, her face emotionless. “Okay. I’m gonna tell you. Just know that I don’t expect or want anything from you, okay? And I’m only telling you because it would be wrong not to. I’m not asking for anything. You don’t have to be involved at all if you don’t want to. I wouldn’t hold anything against you.”

He cocks his head to the side, mentally deciphering what her words mean. He pairs together everything else he knows about the situation. And suddenly, he wishes he could be interpreting everything wrong. Everything feels distant and fuzzy as a sinking feeling in his gut begins to form, her rambling becoming white noise.
