Building Fails Philippines – Part 2
Photo by Sami Aksu This weeks article is called building fails in the Philippines – part 2. As I mentioned in last week’s article, it is not to highlight foolishness but a collection of areas I need to think about when building your home in the Philippines. In most of my articles, I have talked about topics that are the “normal” way of building a home in the Philippines. In my mind, some of…

Could you recommend me 1-2 good "standard" bl from each of the main bl producing countries (China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea)? I'm interested in the differences in tropes and execution between bl from different countries, especially Taiwan and Thailand. I'm looking for bl that's highly rated because it's well-executed but doesn't stray from the expected formula for its region.
Great BLs that ALSO rep for their country's style
I really took the "represent" part seriously. Here are my (end of 2024) quick pulls, explanations etc in the linked posts at the bottom.
Tumblr media
Japan
Seven Days (or I Cannot Reach You)
Old Fashion Cupcake
For the darker stuff: Tokyo in April is
Tumblr media
Korea
Semantic Error
To My Star
For their new style of darker stuff: The 8th Sense or Love for Love's Sake
Tumblr media
Thailand
These were absolutely the hardest to pick, so I couldn't stick to 2. There's just so much Thai BL.
My School President - best high school rep (heritage = Love of Siam, Love Sick, the true Thai BL beginnings)
Bad Buddy - best uni BL rep (heritage = 2gether, SOTUS, the beginning of Thai BL global dominance) alternative = Oxygen which is possibly the most classic Thai uni BL we have ever gotten (but Bad Buddy is better acted)
We Are - best GMMTV ensemble piece, heritage is actually also Love Sick, but in 2024 everyone is gay.
Lovely Writer - best meta
My Ride - best pulp
The Sign - best wild what-the-actual-fuck? ride (KinnPorshe also an option)
For an example of the few times Thailand got elevated: I Feel You Linger in the Air or A Tale of Thousand Stars. But these are atypical, we only get a few of them a year from Thailand.
Taiwan
These were the easiest to pick.
We Best Love
Be Loved In House: I Do
But actually: History 4: Make Our Day's Count will tell you everything you ever needed to know about Taiwanese BL in one mess of a show. It's just... not that great.
China
Addicted
Word of Honor
The Philippines
Gameboys
My Day
Vietnam
Mr Cinderella
My Lascivious Boss
But by most standards neither of these are actually very good.
Here's a 2022 post where I talk about the differences between country's styles and approaches.
If you want representative samples from a historical perspective than I do that here:
In that post, you'll need to decide what kind of representation you want to consume though, because some are very old, and others newer, since this is set up to learn about the evolution of the genre.
I also wrote a whole series on the history of the genre along with my top 10 picks at the time (2022). It's old now but still holds up for what you want. I would say pick any two from the top ten of each list, but please understand my personal taste leans toward the lighter fluffier fare. (Which means my top ten from places like Japan is very skewed. Also several countries have added new top 10, for me personally, in 2023 & 2024).
Here's a fun one on the tropes people love in the different countries
And a personal favorite, very silly and not helpful at all.

Queasy - Choi Han/Reader
a/n: inspired by me being the most easily nauseated person I know. Actually, idk if nauseated is the right term, we call it "naduduwal" in the Philippines and when I used google translate it said that the translation is nauseous. Anyways, this may or may not be inspired by actual scenarios in my life...
tags: self-indulgent, 5 + 1 fic, female reader, fluff, descriptive signs of vomiting, but there's no actual vomiting, author went a bit overboard?
English isn’t my first language so there will be grammatical errors
Pls don't repost my work anywhere without my permission
Constructive criticisms and any kind of interaction are more than welcome

Ever since [Name] was a child she easily felt nauseous. The slightest change of smell can make her feel as though a bile is coming up her throat. Whatever she ate last threatened to come back up.
Living with it for all her life made her used to it. That was why she forgot to inform her new group of friends about her “condition”.
Which brings everyone to this predicament…
Beacrox was cooking lunch for everyone. The kitchen door was open as the thing his cooking had too much smoke. It smelled good. In fact, everyone couldn’t wait to eat. They were already imagining what could the chef be possibly making.
Until [Name] walked into the room.
When she first walked in everything seemed normal. They even looked happy as there was a pep in their step. However, that changed as soon as they smelled the aroma of the food being cooked.
[Name] staggered a little, but quickly composed herself. She could feel that familiar feeling something trying to crawl up her throat. But she knew that it was nothing alarming so she swallowed it down and greeted everyone.
“Are you okay..?”
Choi Han inquired hesitantly, his hands supporting [Name]’s back. The woman gathered herself fast enough that no one else noticed. It’s just that nothing escapes past the swordmaster’s observant eyes.
…Well at least nothing about [Name] can escape past Choi Han’s eyes.
“I’m fine. The sudden change of smell just surprised me.”
“Are you sure?”
Choi Han doesn't look convinced in the slightest.
“Positive. In fact, it smells good. I can’t wait to see what Beacrox made!”
After that day [Name] could feel Choi Han’s concerned gaze whenever the smell of food was up in the air.
The next time it happened it probably would have costed [Name] her life if it wasn’t for Choi Han. Which was comedic considering the culprit…
+~+~+~+~+~+
A sneeze.
Yes, a sneeze almost took out [Name]. A single sneeze made her vulnerable to the enemies' attacks.
They were fighting, another typical day of bringing Cale’s crazy plans to life. Everything was going well, they had the upper hand. The enemy was on [Name]’s mercy.
Achoo!
Well, it was until she sneezed.
It would have been fine if it was just a normal sneeze.
Bleur–
Unfortunately, it wasn’t.
[Name] staggered as she put her left hand on her mouth, her right hand trying to hold onto something to stabilize herself. Her momentarily loss of balance made her vulnerable to the enemies' attacks.
She honestly thought that would be her end. If it wasn’t then she would at least sustain some grave injuries.
THUD!
Black aura surrounded the area [Name] was fighting on. The sword of the owner of the said aura fighting against the enemies trying to hurt her.
The aide surprised [Name]. Because she swears just a millisecond ago Choi Han was fighting his fair share of enemies on the other side of the battlefield. Then as if he has a [Name] 6th sense, he almost teleported to where she was as soon as she started staggering.
Choi Han encircled his free arm around [Name]’s waist. He gently lifted her off the ground as he started to move around to fight the enemies.
It looked as if they were dancing instead of fighting. The two are facing each other chest to chest, [Name]’s feet are completely off the ground making Choi Han lead the sway. They looked as though they were presenting a bloody waltz. It would have been a sight to behold if it wasn’t a matter of life or death.
[Name] and Choi Han went on like that until none of the enemies were left alive. The swordmaster refuses to let her down despite her protests.
Later on, when Cale asked what happened, [Name] answered honestly about how her sneeze was the cause of everything. Choi Han was of course within hearing range when this conversation happened.
Since then the swordmaster made sure to keep anti-allergen medicine in his pocket at all times.
Cale’s group seldom get days off. It wasn’t because their young master was working them to the bone. In fact, his always the first one to suggest the idea of slacking off for a few hours. Rather, it’s just that everyone always keeps themselves occupied. Even when it’s a supposed “free day” everyone will be busy, either training or researching something.
+~+~+~+~+~+
That was why this stroll [Name] is doing in town isn’t because she had the day off. She’s actually strolling the busy streets in order to spread another rumour, Cale’s orders of course.
But she can’t help but admit that this task is more leisurely compared to their usual missions.
Which was why she decided to take it easy and enjoy her rare outing.
As usual, with her is Choi Han. The rumours don’t need lying so he was up for the task. He had been paired with [Name] to ensure he wouldn’t go overboard.
“Let’s go check out that stall! It didn’t exist when I went here last week!”
[Name] pulled the swordmaster behind her, trying to drag him over to the new stall that seemed to sell all kinds of trinkets.
Choi Han let himself be dragged by her. A smile grazed his lips at how happy she looked.
Just like that, the two continued to spread rumours while enjoying themself around town. Choi Han’s previously empty hands are now filled with bags containing souvenirs for everyone left at home.
“We should’ve brought a spacial bag–”
Keugh!
[Name] felt nauseous once more. There wasn’t even a trigger this time. No smell, no sudden movements. Nothing. Her body made her nauseous just because it could.
“Let’s get you home now.”
Choi Han, a little more used to her body’s antics now, placed himself in front of her in order to catch her. It was the next best thing he could do since his arms were currently unavailable. As expected, [Name] landed on his chest. Her hands latching themselves onto his shirt to keep herself from falling.
“…Yeah I guess that’s enough chatting with the townspeople. I’m sure everyone knows us by now.”
Next time [Name] felt nauseous Choi Han wasn’t there to help her. In fact, there were no adult figures as she was the adult for the day.
+~+~+~+~+~+
That’s right, she was with the children averaging 8 years old.
Everyone had something to do and they were in a foreign kingdom. Hence why [Name] decided to take the kids out to eat. After all, it’s not every day they would be able to taste these foreign dishes. Unless they manage to snag the recipe and bring it back to Beacrox.
“Try this [Name]!”
“You have to taste this nya!”
“This one is delicious too nya! Try it! Try it!”
[Name] had rented out a private room so the children could eat freely. One of the consequences of that was them pushing her to eat everything they deemed delicious. Which was practically the entire menu of the restaurant.
After a while [Name] could feel herself becoming full. She was aware that she should stop eating or else she’d feel nauseous again.
But she didn’t have the heart to deny the kids feeding her a bunch of food. They just wanted to share the joy of eating something delicious with her.
And so she pushed her limits. She couldn’t say no when those three pairs of adorable eyes looked at her expectantly.
Fortunately, Cale and Choi Han soon arrived.
As they entered the room the kids ran over to Cale, ready to feed him everything they made [Name] taste.
Simultaneously, Choi Han took it as a chance to check on [Name]. As soon as the door opened he noticed how pale she looked.
“You alright?”
He whispered as he sat beside her. His fingers rubbed soothing circles on her back.
“Yeah, just peachy. I just got carried away and ate too much”
She whispered back as she leaned on his arm.
“Sure? Maybe you accidentally ate something bad for your stomach…”
“I’m sure. I simply couldn’t say no to the kids.”
Choi Han chuckled slightly, understanding where [Name] was coming from.
“Try not to let them sway you next time.”
He halfheartedly suggested knowing that [Name] would probably do it again if it was for the kids.
“Hahahaha! Did you see the young master’s face!? It was hilarious!”
+~+~+~+~+~+
[Name] laughed as she recalled how the awards ceremony went down. She didn’t expect the crown prince to pull off such a thing. Beside her was Choi Han who was smiling. He didn’t fully comprehend why she found the earlier scene funny but as long as she was happy
“Who needs to go watch opera when you have that–“
There comes the nausea from laughing too much. [Name] instinctively grabbed on Choi Han’s arm. Her grabbing onto him seemed to be the drill as of late whenever she felt nauseous.
“Karma”
Cale grumbled as he walked past them while holding onto a plate of cake. He clearly heard how [Name] was laughing hard at him.
In the midst of [Name] almost throwing up her lunch she still found joy in the situation. The young master was quite cute when his upset after realising he got “scammed”.
And so another wave of laughter escaped past her lips.
“Stop laughing, you’ll feel worse.”
Choi Han clicked his tongue as he scolded the woman leaning on his arms. However, that said woman couldn’t control her laughter. Everything was just too funny.
Giving up, the swordmaster merely supported her weight. He waited for her to feel weak by either laughing too much or feeling even more nauseous.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
+~+~+~+~+~+
This time that desperate time is Choi Han feeling uncomfortable while dealing with a bunch of nobles. He had his fair share of interaction with them but it still felt unusual. Even more so when they surround him, just like right now.
In the midst of him trying to escape from everyone and seriously considering knocking them all unconscious, a familiar figure managed to stagger into his arms.
That familiar figure looked weak. The back of her hand was covering her mouth in an attempt to not vomit.
Of course, that familiar figure was [Name].
Choi Han easily caught her in his arms as she staggered towards him. Once she felt she was safe, she rested her head on his chest.
“I’m sorry, but I have to go now.”
Choi Han bowed towards the crowd before hooking his arms underneath [Name]’s legs. The nobles understood his intentions and finally created a path he could go through. Everyone is aware of how [Name], like Cale, seems to also have a weak constitution.
The swordmaster thanked them as he carried [Name] out of there. He walked until they arrived at a gazebo in the garden.
He sat down on the bench-like chair inside the gazebo, placing [Name] on his lap. Choi Han scanned her body to make sure nothing else was wrong before asking his questions.
“Did you push yourself again? Was it the crowd this time? Were they too much?”
Concern lingered in his eyes, but [Name] simply giggled at him.
“I’m fine, I was faking it.”
“Why..?”
The swordmaster is no stranger to his friends acting all sorts of roles to get what they want. However, this time he can’t fathom why [Name] would do such a thing.
“You looked uncomfortable silly. Is that a way to thank your saviour?“
[Name] jokingly asked him, flexing her muscles as if she just saved him from a gruesome battle.
“I guess you’re the knight in shining armour today huh?”
Choi Han played along to her whims. His hold on her waist tightened ever so gently to ensure she wouldn’t fall off his lap for she was moving too much.
That afternoon, the two spent their time talking about all sorts of topics inside the gazebo until they had to reluctantly go back inside once more.

G.R. No. 189122, Jose Antonio Leviste vs. Court of Appeals and People of the Philippines
Facts:
Jose Antonio Leviste was charged with murder but was convicted of the lesser crime of homicide by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Makati City.
Leviste was sentenced to an indeterminate penalty of six years and one day of prision mayor as minimum to 12 years and one day of reclusion temporal as maximum.
He appealed his conviction to the Court of Appeals (CA).
Pending appeal, Leviste filed an urgent application for admission to bail citing his advanced age, health condition, and absence of flight risk.
The CA denied Leviste's application for bail, invoking the principle that bail during appeal should be exercised with "grave caution and only for strong reasons". The CA stated that bail is not a sick pass for an ailing detainee.
The CA also made a preliminary evaluation of the case, determining there was no substantial reason to overturn the RTC's conviction.
Leviste's motion for reconsideration was also denied, after which he filed a petition for certiorari with the Supreme Court.
Leviste argued that because none of the conditions justifying denial of bail under Section 5, Rule 114 of the Rules of Court were present, bail should automatically be granted.
Issues:
Did the Court of Appeals commit grave abuse of discretion in denying Leviste's application for bail pending appeal?
In an application for bail pending appeal for an offense with a penalty exceeding six years, should bail automatically be granted if none of the circumstances mentioned in the third paragraph of Section 5, Rule 114 of the Rules of Court are present?
Is the appellate court's discretion in granting bail limited to determining the existence of the circumstances enumerated in Section 5, Rule 114 of the Rules of Court?
Does the presumption of innocence continue to apply after conviction by the trial court?
Can a court consider other factors beyond the enumerated circumstances in the third paragraph of Section 5, Rule 114, when deciding whether to grant bail?
What is the relationship between a strong showing of evidence for the crime charged versus the crime for which an accused was convicted?
Ruling:
Answer: The Supreme Court dismissed Leviste's petition for certiorari, affirming the Court of Appeals' denial of bail pending appeal.
Legal Basis:
Discretionary Bail: Upon conviction by the RTC of an offense not punishable by death, reclusion perpetua, or life imprisonment, admission to bail is discretionary.
Section 5, Rule 114:
If the penalty imposed by the trial court is imprisonment exceeding six years, the accused shall be denied bail, or his bail shall be cancelled, upon a showing by the prosecution of certain circumstances such as recidivism, flight risk, or the risk of committing another crime.
The presence of these circumstances mandates the denial or revocation of bail.
Even if none of the circumstances are present, the appellate court still has discretion to deny bail.
Grave Abuse of Discretion: Grave abuse of discretion is not just an error in judgment but a capricious and whimsical exercise of judgment that amounts to a lack of jurisdiction.
Certiorari: The extraordinary writ of certiorari will not be issued to correct errors in proceedings or erroneous conclusions of law or fact, but only to correct errors of jurisdiction.
Presumption of Innocence: The presumption of innocence terminates upon conviction by the trial court and the right to bail ends; from then on, the grant of bail is subject to judicial discretion exercised with grave caution.
Judicial Discretion: Judicial discretion involves a choice between multiple possible outcomes, and the establishment of a clearly defined rule ends discretion.
Statutory Construction: Laws and rules should not be interpreted in a way that leads to unreasonable or senseless consequences.
Restrictive Approach to Bail Pending Appeal: The trend in the rules is toward a more restrictive approach to bail pending appeal.
Purpose of Bail: Bail should be granted only where it is uncertain whether the accused is guilty or innocent. After conviction, the presumption of innocence is rebutted.
Application:
The Supreme Court determined that the CA had jurisdiction to hear and resolve Leviste's application for bail.
The Court found that the CA did not commit grave abuse of discretion in denying Leviste's application because it exercised caution and properly considered relevant factors.
The Court rejected Leviste's argument that bail should automatically be granted if none of the circumstances in Section 5, Rule 114, are present. The court clarified that even if those circumstances are absent, the appellate court still has discretion to deny bail.
The Court explained that the enumerated circumstances in Section 5, Rule 114, are not exclusive, and other similar circumstances can be considered.
The Court noted that after conviction, the presumption of innocence ends and the burden shifts to the accused to show error in the conviction.
The Court emphasized that the grant of bail is discretionary after conviction and must be exercised with grave caution and only for strong reasons.
The Court determined that the CA had made a preliminary assessment of the merits of the case to determine if the appeal was frivolous and that this was part of the appellate court's discretion.
Conclusion: The Supreme Court concluded that the CA did not err in denying Leviste's application for bail pending appeal. The Court dismissed the petition for certiorari, finding no grave abuse of discretion, emphasizing the discretionary nature of bail pending appeal after conviction.
Doctrine:
Bail is a matter of discretion after conviction by the Regional Trial Court of an offense not punishable by death, reclusion perpetua, or life imprisonment.
The appellate court has discretion to deny bail even if none of the circumstances in the third paragraph of Section 5, Rule 114 are present.
The presumption of innocence terminates upon conviction by the trial court, and the right to bail ends.
Grave abuse of discretion is a capricious and whimsical exercise of judgment, not merely an error in judgment.
Judicial discretion is a choice between alternatives and is not limited to fact-finding.
The circumstances enumerated in Section 5, Rule 114 are not exclusive, and other similar circumstances may be considered.
Bail pending appeal should be allowed not with leniency, but with grave caution and only for strong reasons.
Ratio:
The Court upheld the principle that bail pending appeal is not a matter of right after conviction, but rather a matter of judicial discretion exercised with grave caution.
The decision emphasized the importance of respecting the trial court's initial determination that the accused should be in prison after conviction.
The Court aimed to prevent the abuse of the bail system by ensuring that bail pending appeal is not granted too freely.
The Court interpreted Section 5, Rule 114 in a way that prevents absurd outcomes, ensuring that bail is not more accessible for those convicted of serious offenses than for those convicted of less serious crimes.
The decision reflects a trend toward a more restrictive approach to bail pending appeal, aligning with the approach in other democratic societies.
The Court prioritized the public interest in the swift incarceration of individuals found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Court made clear that the determination of bail after conviction requires a comprehensive assessment of all relevant circumstances, not just the presence or absence of the listed conditions.
The Court's decision reinforced the importance of judicial discretion to consider factors beyond the listed conditions.
By dismissing the petition, the Court emphasized the discretionary nature of bail, particularly after conviction, and supported the CA's role in assessing the facts and circumstances of each case.

Job Immigration Challenges in Romania
Romania’s growing economy, particularly in sectors like construction, agriculture, IT, and manufacturing, has made the country an attractive destination for migrant workers. However, the immigration process in Romania is not without its challenges. From complex regulations to vulnerabilities faced by foreign workers, these obstacles require innovative solutions. Joblio, a global leader in ethical recruitment, is paving the way for a more transparent, efficient and worker-centric migration process in Romania.
Tumblr media
The Migration Landscape in Romania:
Romania has seen a steady rise in the demand for foreign labor due to an aging population, labor shortages, and increased industrial output. Workers from countries like Vietnam, Nepal, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka have been filling the gaps in Romania’s labor market. However, this growth has highlighted several issues:
1. Administrative Delays and Complexity:
Romania’s immigration framework involves detailed procedures for obtaining work permits and residency approvals. Recent changes to immigration laws, including amendments introduced by Law No. 28/2024, have added further requirements, such as electronic submissions for certain permits and stricter employer eligibility criteria. These regulations aim to improve oversight but can also lead to processing delays and complications.
2. Vulnerabilities to Exploitation:
Migrant workers often face issues such as misleading contracts, non-payment of wages, and substandard living conditions. These problems arise due to limited oversight and reliance on unregulated intermediaries.
3. Cultural and Social Integration:
Language barriers and a lack of support networks make it difficult for workers to integrate into Romanian society, which can lead to feelings of isolation and dissatisfaction.
4. Labor Market Gaps:
Despite an influx of foreign workers, mismatches between available skills and industry needs persist. This can lead to inefficiencies in workforce allocation.
Joblio’s Innovative Approach to Solving Immigration Challenges
Joblio is revolutionizing how migrant workers are recruited and supported in Romania. By focusing on transparency, fairness, and technology, the platform bridges the gap between workers and employers while addressing systemic issues in the immigration process.
Regulatory Expertise and Streamlining
Joblio assists employers in navigating Romania’s intricate immigration requirements, ensuring that all applications meet the latest legal standards. This reduces administrative errors and accelerates processing times. For workers, Joblio provides clear, step-by-step guidance on obtaining visas, work permits, and residency.
Eliminating Exploitation
Jon Purizhansky, CEO of Joblio, highlights the platform’s commitment to ethical recruitment: “Joblio removes unethical intermediaries from the process, ensuring that workers and employers interact directly, fostering trust and transparency.” Workers are safeguarded through verified contracts, transparent wage structures, and pre-arranged accommodations.
Comprehensive Worker Support
Joblio goes beyond recruitment by offering pre-departure orientation programs. These include language training, cultural awareness sessions, and information on workers’ legal rights and workplace expectations. Once in Romania, workers receive continued support, from housing assistance to help accessing healthcare services.
Data-Driven Workforce Matching
Through advanced analytics, Joblio identifies labor market trends and skill shortages in Romania, allowing employers to recruit workers whose skills align with industry needs. This approach enhances productivity and reduces turnover.
Benefits for Employers and the Romanian Economy
Romanian businesses benefit significantly from Joblio’s services. Employers gain access to a vetted pool of skilled workers while ensuring full compliance with legal requirements. Additionally, the ethical treatment of workers improves retention rates and fosters a more motivated workforce.
For Romania, platforms like Joblio help stabilize the labor market by addressing shortages and contributing to the country’s economic growth. Transparent and ethical recruitment practices also enhance Romania’s reputation as a fair and welcoming destination for migrants.
A Vision for the Future
As Romania continues to adapt its immigration policies to align with EU directives and address labor market demands, the role of technology-driven solutions like Joblio becomes increasingly important. By prioritizing fairness, efficiency, and worker well-being, Joblio is setting a new standard for ethical migration.
Jon Purizhansky envisions a future where job immigration is no longer a source of stress or exploitation, but a mutually beneficial process for workers and employers. “Our mission is to create a system where everyone wins—workers find dignity and opportunity, while employers gain reliable and skilled team members,” Jon Purizhansky explains.
Romania’s journey toward a more efficient and equitable immigration system is supported by platforms like Joblio, which address the core challenges of administrative complexity, worker vulnerability, and integration. As the country’s labor needs grow, Joblio’s innovative model provides a scalable and sustainable solution, ensuring that migration becomes a pathway to shared prosperity for all involved.

But then people respond with dogmatic, metaphysical analysis in opposition to all the revisionism. "China's either capitalist, or socialist, which are obvious and eternal binary categories! If China's capitalist, then it's the Enemy™️!" What that actually means for us here is unclear, except that we must spend our time yelling at revisionists in public instead of organizing the people (apparently).
People will openly mock the idea of China consciously transitioning to socialism from state capitalism (even though that's what the early USSR did, if quicker). "China's been state capitalist for generations, what proof is there that their strategy is the one for achieving communism?" But these same people will fetishize guerrilla movements that have been going on even longer, and have yet to break out of their core areas. Doesn't the same argument apply? Who's to say that the CPP's strategy will historically prove any more effective? And even if it does, this isn't the Philippines.
In both cases there are contradictions within the party, and between the party and the capitalist class. How these develop depends on geopolitical questions that have yet to resolve. There is a massive left contingent within the CPC and the Chinese proletariat. Xi isn't part of that left wing, but he represents a move toward the left from where China was in the 90s and 00s.
The argument for a purely developmental basis to communism is kind of bullshit, but ignoring that, the CPC still needs to construct the political basis for communism. The road is complicated by the presence of national and international bourgeoisie in their economy (Chinese NEP men), and the geopolitical advantage China gets from their keystone role in the global market. The reliance of the Western imperial capitalists on the Chinese economy may be the one thing preventing the US from nuking them. This means instead of bloating their military budget like the USSR they can focus on the economy and culture. Meanwhile, the CPP has had its fortunes go up and down, but it's military position is very difficult. It's fighting with no support against a key US neo-colonial government, in a geographically isolated situation.
What can we do here to force the development of historical processes and aid these left forces? Destroy the US and European empires, and establish socialist states. Do you think China's policies are a fair response to the threat of US imperialism, or do you think it's just cover for their capitalist interests? Either way, removing the threat of the US empire eliminates that factor in Chinese politics. And if/when shit does go down, who do you think will help us? The CPP? The Naxalites? They need help themselves. Who has the military force, the productive capacity, the manpower, and the geostrategic interest, to help us? China, Russia, and Vietnam. Don't kid yourselves.
This comes down to what I view as people's dogmatic and undialectical view toward revisionism. Politics gets reduced to ideological stances, which determine whether you're a good or bad communist (read: "person"). The fact is that Iran, an anti-communist theocracy, is doing more to materially aid the Palestinian struggle (which includes communist forces) than all Western Maoists combined. This remains true even while the Iranian government imposes neo-liberal measures on the people and suppresses communists.
If Iranian reactionaries can help destabilize the US empire, and thus create openings for communist forces, then certainly revisionist communists can play at least as positive a role. The inability to view the larger picture, instead framing things in terms of absolute, metaphysical friends and enemies, leads to severe errors like allying with the US against the USSR, and backing the Khmer Rouge against the Vietnamese. The collapse of the USSR was a result of many problems, some related to revisionist backsliding, but that doesn't mean the USSR collapsing was a good thing for Eastern Europe or global communism.
You've got people who can't muster the numbers or support to do fuck all, and they spend all their time dividing our forces by arguing with people who agree with them on everything that actually matters for achieving communism here. The ultimate enemy isn't revisionism, it's capitalism, and our current enemy isn't revisionism qua revisionism, it's ourselves: our own incompetence, cowardice, dogmatism, egotism, childishness, factionalism, disorganization, flakiness, and general lack of principles or creativity.
So much of right-deviation comes from dogmatically affirming other revolutions. If anything the USSR, or China, or whichever state does is Eternally Correct, then you'll follow their errors off a cliff. (Needless to say, that's not scientific or dialectical.) But in reaction to that, so many declare that because their movement is more outwardly radical in its statements, aesthetics, and tactics, then they must be better than those "revisionists" (evidence pending). They spend all their time criticizing others without seeing the pile of shit they're sitting on.
Sometimes I wonder if any of us actually want to win. You know, winning communism? Defeating global capitalism? That thing that supposedly makes us all communists? So many communists confuse having the Correct Opinion™️ with being politically effective.
if you are a revolutionary communist but have no answer to the question 'what political action could you take tomorrow' you are not doing revolutionary marxism, you are doing eschatology

this mechanical demon took so many hours of my life away from me that i’ll never get back Alright all jokes aside, here’s Kiryu. I’m super proud of how he turned out. I wanted to use watercolor here and establish it as a part of my style, but it didn’t work so well so i colored and shaded as normally (also fucked up the tail yikes), In a way, he’s less of Kiryu specifically; and more of a homage to every MechaGodzilla, mostly Kiryu and Super MechaG tho. “ The Titan inside the Shell “ Size Stats: Height - 425 feet Length - 688 feet Abilites: Absolute Zero Cannon - As the name would suggest, Kiryu can shoot a beam that reaches zero kelvins, able to freeze just about anything and everything. Almost all titan subjects have been frozen on a cellular level with the exception of Godzilla, who was merely badly scarred. Alloy Armor - Kiryu’s plating is constructed of Diamonds. This makes it invulnerable to the atomic breath of a Titanus Gojira, and other beam-like attacks. Jet Boosters - Kiryu possesses Jet boosters. Despite already being exceptionally fast for it’s size, the jet boosters grant it extra mobility and speed, aswell as grant it the ability of flight. Firepower - Kiryu possesses a whole bunch of rocket launchers, missiles, bombs and maser turrets. Making it a true war machine. Maser blade - Kiryu, using maser, can create an electrical blade. It can not only pierce through almost everything; but discharge a horrifyingly crippling electrical discharge into the foe, which has been demonstrated to severely injure, if not kill most titans. Hyper Maser Turrets - Kiryu can shoot an empowered maser attack from it’s mouth, chest or palms. These are extremely devastating, and can cause explosions equivalent to Napalm bombs. Brief History: Kiryu was constructed by a collaboration between the UN’s TCTF and Monarch. They used the remains of MechaGodzilla after the battle that took place in 2024. They built the robot around the foundation of Dagon’s bones, which was extracted from the Philippines by Monarch around the events of G14 for further study. Kiryu’s construction was completed in 2028, the investment in the project reaching the billions. It was an amazing accomplishment. It was coded using DNA programming to allow itself to pilot if the situation ever comes to it. A creature, named Titanosaurus was discovered bringing wreckage to ships, Kiryu was deployed in the Pacific Ocean to brawl with Titanosaurus. The fight was incredibly one-sided, as Titanosaurus was easily defeated. Soon after, it was discovered by MONARCH that Titanosaurus. It was soon discovered this titan was only attacking because it was searching for the three eggs that MONARCH stole from it’s nest, these being the three Gojira hatchlings, that it thought saw as her own offspring.  Godzilla is seen heading towards the site that the hatchlings are being held, causing large amounts of death and destruction in his wake, likely because of his desperation to reach them. Kiryu is deployed to fight Godzilla once he reaches Kyoto, Godzilla manages to defeat Kiryu, and continues on his voyage, however; Kiryu begins to malfunction shortly after the defeat, and the pilots onboard the machine lose control of it all together. As it turns out, a force believed to be Dagon himself took control of the machine. Dagon horrified by the mechanical body he was confined it, rampaged through what remained of Kyoto, and destroyed TCTF militias. Kiryu was managed to be shut down and went through troubleshooting. Titanosaurus made it to Osaka before Godzilla had, destroying much of MONARCH’s forces and successfully rescuing the hatchlings from confinement. Kiryu had arrived at the scene in time, to which Titanosaurus hid the hatchlings out of fear and attacked Kiryu. The two fought, but Kiryu hit Titanosaurus with a chest hyper maser beam, nearly fatally killing her, Kiryu prepared to strike with a Plasma sword to finish Titanosaurus. Godzilla arose from the ocean and shot Kiryu with a Spiral Atomic Breath, saving Titanosaurus and causing major functionality errors within Kiryu. This caused Kiryu’s control to quickly alternate between Dagon and the pilots. Type 2 Gear, codename “Garuda”, a flying mech created to exterminate lesser titans combined with Kiryu to take down Godzilla. Kiryu shot Godzilla with a fully charged Absolute Zero cannon, nearly killing the tyrant and leaving a giant, gushing scar that would likely cause him to die of blood loss anyway. Kiryu prepared to kill Godzilla, until Dagon and the pilots struggled to take control from one another, preventing the job from being done. This allowed Godzilla to regain conscious and unleash his spiral heat ray on Kiryu, causing it to recieve major damage in 3 clean hits. Rendering it destroyed; for now. [This story is a draft of my plans for him in my AU.]

Basic Skills
Basic Skills are present in both teams Philippines and Vietnam. They showed the basic skills such as:
Passing is often thought of as the most important skill in volleyball. If you can’t pass the serve, then you won’t ever put your team in a position to score a point.
Blocking is perhaps the least taught skill in volleyball. Players can get away with poor blocking skills because not blocking isn’t going to hurt the team as much as being poor at executing other skills in volleyball.
Setting is done to either dump the ball over into an undefended spot or to “set” the ball into a position that allows the hitter to spike it over.
Spiking is the act of scoring a point by slamming the ball over the net into the opposing court effectively and aggressively.
Digging is preventing the ball from hitting the floor after being spiked by the opposing team.
Serving is done by using one, open hand to swing overhead and send the ball over the net from behind the end line.
Tumblr media
Rules of the Game
Volleyball Rules
6 players on the floor at any one time - 3 in the front row and 3 in the back row
Maximum of 3 hits per side
Points are made on every serve for wining team of rally (rally-point scoring).
Player may not hit the ball twice in succession. (A block is not considered a hit.)
Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on a serve.
A ball hitting a boundary line is in.
A ball is out if it hits an antennae, the floor completely outside the court, any of the net or cables outside the antennae, the referee stand or pole, the ceiling above a non-playable area.
It is legal to contact the ball with any part of a player’s body.
It is illegal to catch, hold or throw the ball.
A player cannot block or attack a serve from on or inside the 10-foot line.
After the serve, front-line players may switch positions at the net.
Matches are made up of sets; the number depends on level of play.
3-set matches are 2 sets to 25 points and a third set to 15. Each set must be won by two points. The winner is the first team to win 2 sets.
5-set matches are 4 sets to 25 points and fifth set to 15. The team must win by 2 unless tournament rules dictate otherwise. The winner is the first team to win three sets.
 Volleyball Rules Violations
Stepping on or across the service line when serving while making contact with the ball.
Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully.
Ball-handling errors and contacting the ball illegally (double touching, lifting, carrying, throwing, etc.)
Touching the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play.
Blocking a ball coming from the opponent’s court and contacting the ball when reaching over the net if your opponent has not used 3 contacts AND has a player there to make a play on the ball.
Attacking a ball coming from the opponent’s court and contacting the ball when reaching over the net when the ball has not yet broken the vertical plane of the net.
Crossing the court centerline with any part of your body, with the exception of a hand or foot. It is only considered a violation if the entire hand or entire foot crosses the court centerline.
Serving out of rotation or out of order.
Back row player blocking (deflecting a ball coming from the opponent) when, at the moment of contact, the back row player is near the net and has part of their body above the top of the net. This is an illegal block.
Back row player attacking a ball inside the front zone (the area inside the 3M/10-foot line) when, at the moment of contact, the ball is completely above the net. This is an illegal attack.
Officiating the Sports
- Referees
Before starting the game, there were two referees being introduced. First referee was named Leung Yin Yan and the second was Agung Purwanto. They were both responsible for officially recognizing team requests, substitutions, time-outs and communicating with the coaches at the appropriate times.
Tumblr media
( A screenshot of the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm4kGC_d-i8)
- Scorekeeper
The scorekeeper creates official records of volleyball games. Before play begins, the scorekeeper records team and player information. Once the game begins, scorekeepers not only track points, but also player substitutions, sanctions and time-outs. The scorekeeper keeps an eye on the individual serving the ball to track the rotation and notify referees of potential lapses. At the close of the game, the scorekeeper records the final score of the game.
- Assistant Scorekeeper
The assistant scorekeeper or libero tracker is responsible for updating the scoreboard and keeping an eye on the libero. This individual records changes in the libero rotation, notifying referees when problems occur in the rotation.
- Line Judges
There are usually two line judges, one at either end of the court, usually in opposite corners. Line judges work with the referees, signaling to assist in making judgment calls. These officials often use flags to signal when a ball is in or out, hits the antennae of the net, or when the server commits a foot fault, or steps outside the line as they serve.
Technical and tactical skills
As the game started both teams had technical skills in order to have a systematic play to be an effective team in the game. They have both unique technical skills as the two opposing team showcased their strength and abilities. During the game, the Philippines was finishing strong at the first set through great communication through the athletes in the team and they also constructed opening opinion to beat the opposing team. On the other hand, the team also displayed correct-decision making skills to sustain the game until reaching the victory. The team were always open to being guided when one fails to do so. Both teams exhibit the ability to read the play or situation and in acquiring the knowledge needed to have a proper tactical decision.
Summarization
The game was started with the big six of the two teams in the Philippines containing: Jovelyn Gonzaga, Mary Joy Baron, Frances Molina, Alyssa Valdez, Abigail Maran, and Rhea Dimaculangan. While the team Vietnam was containing: Thi Kim Dang, Thi Nga Bui. Thi Xuan Nguyen, Thi Thanh Tran, Thi Trinh Nguyen, and Thu Hoai Nguyen. The game was started with the possession of the Philippines having the first serve by Dimaculangan. The game heated up when the Philippines got the first point on the first round and another one through the spike that was unable to be block by the Vietnam. The Philippines won the first set with a 25-21, but the Vietnam didn’t give up as they got the 2nd and third set with the score 23-25 I the 2nd set and 19-25 in the 3rd set which leads the downfall of Filipinos as the Vietnam got the last set scoring 8-15. Vietnam got the victory and it ended up showing true sportsmanship and sharing the passion of their true love of the game between Philippines and Vietnam.

The People of the Philippine Islands vs. Domingo Olfindo, et al. G.R. No. 22679, December 10, 1924
FACTS:
Domingo Olfindo, Gregorio Tongo, and Micael Odi were accused of double murder for the deaths of Maria Magdalena and Aproniano de la Cruz.
The information stated that on July 10, 1923, in Viga, Catanduanes, they killed Maria Magdalena by choking and drowning her in the river, and Aproniano de la Cruz by tying a rope around his neck and drowning him in the river afterwards.
On the day of the crime, several people, including the accused, gathered at Clemente Odi's house for the death of his daughter. While some were constructing a coffin, others were reading the pasión.
Tuba (local wine) was consumed liberally, and Gregorio Tongo and Micael Odi became intoxicated.
In the evening, the accused and others discussed that Maria Magdalena was likely a witch who had bewitched the deceased girl, and Domingo Olfindo proposed that she be killed. Micael Odi agreed and suggested killing Aproniano de la Cruz as well, believing he was also a wizard.
Two groups were formed: one to kill Maria Magdalena, consisting of Domingo Olfindo, Rafael Tulang, and Ignacio Ucero; and the other to kill Aproniano de la Cruz, consisting of Gregorio Tongo and Micael Odi.
Gregorio Tongo and Micael Odi found Aproniano at his mother's house, beat him into submission, tied a rope around his neck, dragged him to the river, and drowned him. They buried his body in a pit.
The group tasked with killing Maria Magdalena, including Domingo Olfindo, Rafael Tulang, and Ignacio Ucero, initially desisted from their plan due to fear of her supposed witchcraft.
Gregorio Tongo then said he would kill Maria and learned from Domingo Olfindo that she was at his father's house. Domingo sent his son to ask Maria to come to his house for treatment. Maria arrived and Tongo and Micael Odi seized her, dragged her to the river, and drowned her.
With the help of Domingo Olfindo, Rafael Tulang and Ignacio Ucero, the body was buried in a shallow grave, which was discovered about two weeks later.
The principal witness, Ignacio Ucero, later retracted his testimony claiming he knew nothing about the case, but the court did not believe him.
The trial court found Micael Odi and Domingo Olfindo guilty as principals of the murder of Maria Magdalena and the homicide of Aproniano de la Cruz. Domingo Olfindo was also found guilty as an accomplice in the murder of Maria Magdalena.
ISSUES:
Did the trial court err in denying the motion for a new trial based on the retraction of the principal witness?
Did the trial court err in treating the offenses as a single crime and imposing the penalty accordingly?
RULING:
Answer: The Supreme Court modified the lower court's decision. It affirmed the conviction of all defendants, but found that two separate crimes were committed and imposed penalties accordingly. The court found that the retraction of the witness did not warrant a new trial.
Legal Basis:
Retraction of Testimony: Ordinarily, little weight is given to statements of a witness retracting their previous testimony given at trial and accepted as true by the trial judge.
Review of Entire Case: An appeal to the Supreme Court in a criminal case throws the entire case open for review. The appellate court is responsible for correcting errors in the judgment, regardless of whether they were specifically assigned as errors.
Separate Crimes in One Information: When an information alleges several separate and distinct crimes, it is erroneous for the court to treat them as a single crime and impose a single penalty.
Aggravating and Extenuating Circumstances: The court must consider aggravating and extenuating circumstances when imposing penalties. Nocturnity is an aggravating circumstance, and intoxication is an extenuating circumstance when it is not intentional or habitual.
Application:
The court determined that the retraction of Ignacio Ucero was not credible. Even without his testimony, there was sufficient evidence to sustain the convictions. His retraction was likely due to family relations and local sentiment.
The Supreme Court ruled that the trial court erred in treating the killings of Maria Magdalena and Aproniano de la Cruz as a single crime. The court recognized them as two distinct crimes: the murder of Maria Magdalena and the homicide of Aproniano de la Cruz..
The court considered the aggravating circumstance of nocturnity and the extenuating circumstance of intoxication for Gregorio Tongo and Micael Odi.
Gregorio Tongo and Micael Odi were each found guilty as principals for both crimes. They were sentenced to cadena perpetua for the murder of Maria Magdalena and to twelve years and one day of reclusión temporal for the homicide of Aproniano de la Cruz.
Conclusion: The Supreme Court modified the judgment. Gregorio Tongo and Micael Odi were found guilty as principals of both murder and homicide. They were sentenced to cadena perpetua for the murder of Maria Magdalena and twelve years and one day of reclusion temporal for the homicide of Aproniano de la Cruz. The judgment against Domingo Olfindo was affirmed.
DOCTRINE OF THE CASE:
Retracted Testimony: Retractions of testimony are generally viewed with skepticism and are not sufficient grounds for a new trial, especially when the original testimony is supported by other evidence.
Review on Appeal: An appeal in a criminal case opens the entire case for review by the appellate court. The court can correct errors even if they are not specifically raised by the appellants.
Separate Crimes: When multiple distinct crimes are alleged in a single information, they should be treated separately, and separate penalties should be imposed for each crime.

Immediately to the north-west of Australia, occupying an area somewhat larger than our island-continent, are the heartlands of the pre-modern world’s most accomplished and farthest-ranging oceanic explorers, migrant settlers and traders. Today they occupy much of Southeast Asia, while their outlying settlements stretch from Madagascar to Easter Island and Hawai’i. Active and afloat across the Asian and Indian Ocean region for millennia, their maritime mercantile ventures reached northern Australia in pre-colonial centuries.
They are the diverse but culturally and linguistically related people who are collectively called Austronesians.
Both the term ‘Austronesian’ and these people’s identity as a distinct grouping are, it’s safe to say, very little recognised by most Australians or the wider world, except among specialist historians, archaeologists, ethnographers and linguists. Author Philip Bowring wants to change that with this book that is a detailed, multidisciplinary account of these quintessential seafaring and trading societies, from their prehistoric origins until now.
In particular Bowring wants the ‘general reader and public’, at whom this book is aimed, to appreciate their dynamic role in the networks of oceanic trading that stretched from Asia across the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean for thousands of years… networks that led directly to the last half millennium of European expansion, and that were the forerunners of today’s globalised economy.
Austronesians comprise most of the populations of modern Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, speaking hundreds of different but related languages. There are also minority Austronesian populations in Indochina, Burma, Thailand and Taiwan. Ethnic Thais, Cambodians, Laos, Vietnamese and Burmese of mainland South-East Asia are not Austronesians, nor were they primarily seafaring societies – the thing that most defines deep Austronesian heritage.
So to avoid confusion Bowring has coined a new term, Nusantaria, to describe Austronesian homelands on the islands and coasts of South-East Asia, from where they sailed and traded much more widely. The term comes from the Sanskrit-derived, Malay-Indonesian nusantara (‘the islands between’), referring to the archipelagos that stretch from China and South-East Asia towards Australasia. (In English this was sometimes ‘the Malay archipelago’, the title of Alfred Russell Wallace’s magnificent magnum opus published precisely 150 years ago.)
The Nusantaria concept keeps the focus on this vital maritime mercantile heartland, whereas some of the Austronesian family sailed so far away – to Micronesia, Polynesia and Madagascar – that they eventually lost contact with the ancestral sail-trading network.
The major defining feature of Nusantarian societies was their mastery of navigation with ingenious vessel technologies, which included outriggers, unique fore-and-aft sailing rigs and hull-construction techniques that distinguished them from the Arab, Persian, Indian, Chinese and (much later) European ships that also plied these seas. This was the key to their expansion and settlement of maritime Southeast Asia over the last four or five millennia, displacing or absorbing earlier migrants. Other original features of Nusantarian societies included ancestral cults and shamanism, headhunting, and the independence and high standing of their women.
Bowring takes an even-handed approach to the fascinating question of Nusantarian origins. He acknowledges the well-accepted ‘out of China via Taiwan’, north-to-south thesis of Peter Bellwood et.al., but seemingly gives equal credence to alternative, south-to-north theories of migrations that were forced by the last inter-glacial flooding of the Sundaland basin (Stephen Oppenheimer, William Sondheim).
From ancient times the islands of Nusantaria supplied key trade commodities including the rarest and most costly spices – cloves, nutmeg and mace – exported in its own ocean-going ships. But more crucially, these home waters were the cross-roads of all the extensive sea trade between East Asia and the Indian Ocean.
Controlling these sea lanes led to the rise of diverse Nusantarian trading centres and entrepôts, kingdoms and empires in Sumatra, Java, Malaya and elsewhere in their region. Bowring vividly depicts a cosmopolitan trading world exchanging ceramics, metals, gems, silks and other textiles, spices, forest products, slaves – the vast majority shipped by sea.
‘A Persian writing in Arabic in the tenth century,’ he tells us, ‘noted that parrots in Palembang [the Sumatran centre of the Srivijaya empire] could speak many languages including Arabic, Persian and Greek.’ Those polylingual parrots would certainly also have spoken Malay, the Austronesian language native to both shores of the Straits of Malacca – the narrow funnel through which most of this trade passed. It became the lingua-franca of the region’s sailors and traders well over a thousand years ago, and is the basis of the modern Indonesian national language.
The major religions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam entered the region from the Indian Ocean, spread peaceably by maritime trade and adopted through influence and prestige. Nusantarian societies transformed these religions, as much as they transformed Nusantaria. Rare seaborne invasions such as that of the Tamil-Indian Cholas in 1025, and later Mongol and Ming interventions, made no lasting impacts due to the dispersal of the islands and the skills of its sailors and traders.
European and Christian incursions began more forcibly five centuries ago, lured by the fabulous wealth of the ‘Spice Islands’ and advantaged by the superior gunnery of these aggressive newcomers. The shock is well expressed in the famous words of 17th-century Makassan Sultan Alauddin, refusing monopolist Dutch demands to exclude their rivals: ‘God made the land and the sea. The land he divided among men and the sea he gave in common. It has never been heard that anyone should be forbidden to sail the seas.’
This new era would lead eventually to a severe downturn of Nusantarian fortunes and a loss of common identity as they were fragmented into the post-colonial states we know today. Bowring makes the valuable point, however, that it’s easy to exaggerate the effect of the first few centuries of European activity, as disruptive as it was. It was not until ‘a final land-grabbing spasm around the turn of the 20th century that European imperialism reached its final apogee’, drawing Nusantaria’s modern borders.
Journalist, author and yachtsman Philip Bowring has lived in Asia for decades as a correspondent for leading financial and international newspapers, and was editor of the prestigious Far Eastern Economic Review. His earlier history book was about a distant ancestor, Sir John Bowring, who as Plenipotentiary in China in 1856 precipitated the Second Opium War, and who negotiated a key trade treaty between Britain and King Mongkut of Anna and the King of Siam fame.
Having read history at Cambridge and, during his working life, absorbed himself in the history and economy of maritime Asia, Philip Bowring is well placed to attempt this ambitious synthesis of vast amounts of scholarship and primary sources for a non-specialist readership. Its magnitude is attested by a nine-page bibliography. Given the breadth and depth of material consulted, errors (in this reviewer’s fields, at least) were few and minor.
At times the work suffers from the formidable weight of historical detail that it encompasses. There are occasions where condensing complex events and multiple players creates sentences that are rather too opaque, unless you’re already well-versed in that history. Places, people or processes can sometimes flash by, for the first and last time, unexplained.
This is less criticism than acknowledgement of the dilemma of treating an intricate subject encompassing so very many cultures, eras and episodes in a single volume – as best I know, for the first time. You could push the book out by an extra hundred or two pages – but then, good luck finding a publisher. Or do you simplify the story by sacrificing some of the richness and texture of complex events and processes? Any reader finding themselves a bit lost in the detail might return to the contents list, which has been well constructed with snappy chapter titles and a clever 30-word synopsis for each. This can usefully be returned to as a summary or a road map.
The attractive illustrations in both colour and mono have been very well selected for variety and quality, with many outstanding works of art, artefacts or historical sources. It might have been helpful to reference them more in the text, however, to make their relevance clearer to readers unfamiliar with the subject.
This hardcover book is handsomely produced with a beautiful dust jacket showing fine Nusantarian galleys in the Moluccas, recorded during the Louis de Freycinet expedition of 1817–20. It’s a volume that offers readers a deeper understanding of the vibrant maritime peoples and events that unfolded literally on Australia’s tropical northern doorstep, to better appreciate the complex development of the human, political and economic region that we inhabit.
