Sinful Symphonies

{pt.2}

A disc leisurely floats to the phonograph in the corner of the room. Filling the chamber with music.

It wasn’t his normal choice, but it would do for today.

Black Hat leans back in his chair, closing his eyes for a moment of rest. He didn’t require sleep or breaks, his body never tired like the mortals around him. He was always conscious of everything around him.

But to have a moment with just his glorious self was quite nice..

The melody drifts on.

The world quiets.

Just as bruises form on his body.

And as a dull throb reverberates in his head.

Damn it.

He growls and opens his eyes, his eyebrows furrowed as he cuts off the music with a snap of his fingers. With the moment gone, Black Hat examines his new injuries, though he knows they will fade soon.

The concept of a “soulmate” was not new to him, nor was the affect the bond could have on a pair.

It was quite the revelation when he discovered even he could have one. And for a while, he fancied the idea of having someone all to himself; someone only he could have for the rest of time and then some. But as his intended died and reincarnated he grew annoyed with the drawbacks.

They filled his mind with childish rhymes and songs, giving him scrapes and stupid little paper cuts. They interrupted his plans with out of sync humming. As they grew they went through constant phases and would repeat songs over and over! In one reincarnation, they even fell victim to poisoning and trampling in the same week!

How dare they interrupt his schedule with such pitiful mortal afflictions! He couldn’t even enjoy watching them suffer!

How could his soulmate- his equal! Be so vulnerable?!

A small squeak of gears and doors unlatching catches his attention as he digs his claws into the arms of his chair, green drool dripping from his clenched teeth. Releasing his grip of the chair, he leans back and crosses his legs. Once again under the guise of his “gentlemanly” persona.

“The doctor must be back.” His eye turns red as he connects his consciousness to a portrait downstairs, surveying the room for his lackeys. It was only recently that he acquired this minion, and while he showed some.. promise, the scientist still had yet to truly prove himself. Not that he could ever hope to reach his standards of perfection of course. He doubted if anyone could.

Strangely, there is no movement inside the manor.

He scowls,”Where are those imbeciles.”

Fully immersing himself into the portrait, Black Hat slips out of the canvas and saunters through the house in search of the source of the disturbance. It was likely the gates to the underground garage.

But unloading parcels was no excuse for checking in late!

A familiar melody fills his head causing him to stop walking for a second.

Fondu au noir, he believes. A humming accompanies the lyrics, faint, but enough to be noticed.

They were in sync this time, he thinks with a flutter of amusement.

He grunts, a deep scowl once again on his face as he continues his trek downstairs. Of course they would have bad timing once again, filling his mind with nonsense.

Standing before the doors, he slips through into the garage. Black Hat is greeted by the sight of his subordinates hog tied atop of the car. The bots in the front seats are either dismantled or completely decimated with scorch marks on their plating. The merchandise however, is all in one piece.

‘Lucky doctor.’ Black Hat lifts a brow, his face unamused.

Flug gulps, sweat dripping down the paper bag covering his head,”H-Hello m-my lord!”

Demencia squeals,”Sweetie!”

A twitch of his eye.

The merchandise was there, but his reputation was stained.

Failure.

Absolute. Failure.

“S-Sir..?”

“Its all under control, you said,” Black Hat chuckles, his shadow climbing the wall and expanding,”Its as good as done.” Membranous wings snap from his back as Black Hat roars; his flesh peels back, exposing his gums and fluorescent green teeth, the smell of rot fills the air.

Flug whimpers, curling in on himself as much as he could with his limbs bound,”Y-Yes but you s-see Lord Black Hat-“

“W̡̮̣̼̰͙̾̀̈̏͆̽͢͝H̩͒́͢AT̢̫̖̐̈͐!”

“Avillaingotinourway!”

He snarls,”They are like any other enemy doctor, you take them down!”

“It was a Horseman, sir! They took us down after destroying the Hat-Bots!”

Black Hat pauses.

Flug trembles, waiting for his masters response while Demencia watches adoringly.

“A little Horseman you say?”

“Y-Yes sir.”

Black Hat chuckles and swipes a clawed finger to release the two from their bonds. Leaning closer to Flug he drags a sharp digit across the scientist’s goggles,”I will give you one chance to remedy your little SLIP UP!”

Flug flinches.

Black Hat grins, embracing his flair for the theatrical as the lights die out. Leaving his sickening grin and piercing eye the only light sources in the room.

”Bring them to me.”

Once you got home, you immediately turned on your radio and fell asleep. Sleep means you don’t have to acknowledge the aching in your body.

Pain, or dreams of fireplaces, cats, and fresh bread?

Dreams of course.

But a harsh rapping at the door not hours later, pulls you from your sleep.

You stretch your arms above your head, sighing in pleasure as your sore joints pop. You lay back down to continue sleeping. Screw whoever’s at the door, you want your sleep.

The knocking grows louder, soon turning into insistent banging.

You groan, sitting back up,“I’m going!” You huff,”No need to be so pushy.” Grabbing a pair of brass knuckles from a ceramic vase on the small table by your couch, you stuff your hand into your pocket before unlocking the door and removing the deadbolt.

Swinging open the door, you are met with the sight of Pestilence leaning on the doorway with wide eyes. Death looks everywhere but you and War cradles a fallen potted tree in his arms. Conquest is the only normal one with his hands in his suit pockets.

They’re all dressed nicely, you realize with a small hum.

Conquest smiles softly and waves,”Hey sorella.”

You smile back, waving with the brass knuckles on,”Hey Connie.” Quirking a brow at War, you look to the rest of your siblings,”So. You came to vandalize my plant or my fridge?”

Death grins, signing rapidly,”Wine cellar. War can have the tree.”

“Proceed,” you motion to War as you sign to Death,”This is Why I can't have nice things.” You roll your eyes.

War rightens the tree as the three siblings walk inside, each one giving you a kiss on the cheek or small pat on the shoulder. In the family, a normal hello would work like when you were all kids. But in the family, respect was to be shown when entering the house of any member of the clan. even siblings.

Either way, you really missed these guys. Often they were back at the home base in Calamni with the matriarch and a good chunk of the family. While you weren’t shunned from returning after choosing to enroll in college full time rather than villainy, neither side could visit the other frequently.

“Sooo whatcha up to punk?” Pesty plops herself onto the couch, grinning at Death who heads straight to the kitchen.

You lean on the wall,”Well I was finishing up my art degree but seeing as how the building was destroyed that plan is on hiatus for now.”

“So you were at the collapse.” Conquest sits on the loveseat by the window, he taps his fingers uneasily,”Nonna said you might’ve been the one spotted in the area.”

“I was,” You confess,”But I dealt with the problem, I didn’t start it.”

War let’s out a booming laugh,”No need to defend yourself half pint, we’re not here to accuse you.”

“So you’re really just here for my food?”

Oh don’t you feel loved.

Death walks out from around the corner, a platter of cheese in his hands while wine glasses float behind him,”We come with invitations.” He smiles smugly as you squint to read the label on the bottle of wine behind him.

“I was saving that!” You shriek.

The cork pops from the bottle as Death sings,”Not anymore~!”

Pestilence eagerly rubs her hands together,”Pass the loot Videl!”

Death puts down the tray before filling the glasses. Leaving you glaring at them all as the bottle is soon left half empty.

“This better be good.” You sit by Pestilence and are soon boxed in by Death who places his legs on yours and Pestilence’s lap.

War swirls the wine in his glass, a grin gradually forming,”It's pretty exciting.”

“Your exciting or my exciting?” You plop a small block of cheese into Death’s mouth.

“Bit of both” he shrugs.

“Alright, what is it?”

War looks to Conquest who pulls out a small envelope, passing it along to his brother. Opening the envelope, War clears his throat and says,

“The Black Hat Organization cordially invites the House of Horsemen and select members of Death Inc. to our decennial gala to celebrate the achievements of current and past villains. The gala will begin at sundown and end at sunrise. There will be a live auction, dead auction, music and dance then some sort of groveling over Black Hats achievements I guess.” War rambles on,”It mentions pops also getting recognized but we haven’t told him yet.”

“Why not?” You ask.

“Because of mom.” Pestilence floats her glass in front of her, eyes glassy as she listens to the viruses and bacteria that linger around her around her. “She’s definitely not invited, and the old man probably won’t want to go without her.”

“Yeah.. so you guys are taking me?”

“Of course, you’re part of the clan. Unless you want us to take Belladonna and Pluto without you and make you look like the third wheel.” Conquest stifles a smile.

You huff,”After you drank my wine I deserve an invitation.”

“Good! We’re going then, time to get dressed!” Pestilence darts up the stairs.

Your eyes widen,”Wait you never said it was-!” Death slips behind the couch and lifts you from under your arms, carrying you up the stairs with ease.

“Bell’s already in the car!” War cups his hands over his mouth to be heard over your thrashing,”Dress nice this time okay!”

“FUCK YOU!” You let out one last scream before Death tosses you into your room with Pestilence.

Death holds onto the door as you bang on it, calling out to your siblings as your sister takes it upon herself to prepare you for the gala. He smiles nervously at his older brothers, motioning a swift,”Phew!”

War chuckles before looking to Conquest,”This should be fun.”

Conquest simply downs his wine silently.

Black Hat prowls the area, watching as guests begin to enter. He vaguely recalls faces, with most villains not being worth his notice whatsoever. But tonight he searches for a specific kind of company.

A Horseman.

“Lord Black Hat.”

A voice behind him calls. He turns around and finds the Four Horsemen and a few others in their party. Lucky him, he grins to himself.

Conquest bows,”It's an honor to be invited once more, my lord.” The others follow suit but rise before their leader does.

Black Hat hums, looking down at the younger man,”It has been some time hasn’t it?” He scans the group, temporarily pausing on.. one.

“Part of the company?” He asks, referring to Death Inc. which like his own company, was multifaceted. Perhaps they were from the lower ranks.

Conquest looks up, turning to his side,”No sir, she is from our clan. My sister in fact.”

You look up at the tall “man” before you, feeling your pulse quickening as he assesses you silently. His eyes roam from your head to your toes before landing on your face, his eye shining with what you could only describe as something predatory. You were a bit terrified, knowing who he was and what he was capable of- remembering seeing it on the battlefield long ago.

But at the same time, you felt elated. Excited. As if a murky glass was wiped clean. It felt new.

Your group steps to the side as Black Hat approaches you. Their bodies tense, knowing they could step in to attack but ultimately would be nothing more than flies for him to swat away. They could do nothing but watch and wait.

Stopping a foot away, Black Hat removes his top hat and holds it to his chest as he performs a small bow. A bowler hat is in place of the one he took off.

“A pleasure to meet you.” He purrs and looks up at you, sending a jolt of electricity up your spine.

You slowly smile.

“The pleasure is all mine.”

Update

Well I sorta fell off the regular updates train (I know nobody else gives a shit but it gives me a way to mark time and what I’ve done lmao). Done a bunch of cool works stuff that I can’t really talk about, but that’s been nice. Continued running my Descent Into Avernus campaign, had some discussions with the players and now have more roleplay stuff I’ve worked in, such as extra interactions with a certain legendary item for the Flaming Fist Conquest Paladin, or the steam-powered wagon for the Tinkerer Eldritch Knight Fighter. My usual Thursday Mad Mage game god bodied by the module not being a good fit for our party, so we ended that by annihilating the Xanathar in 2 turns (paralysis is a wild condition when you have a fighter and a paladin in the party) and will be starting a homebrew setting campaign soon, so that should be fun. My Saturday urban fantasy tabletop campaign I’m in that’s my friends fully homebrew system and setting has been a ton of fun recently, got to do a bunch of bartering, watch my party members suck at gambling, interact with vikings, and started exploring my character more. That campaign has also facilitated my return to my old hobby of stargazing, which cool and exciting now that I live somewhere with less light pollution. Got a new camera for that, general use, and diving, and that’s been really neat to work with. Got on the horse with a healthy diet, and have finally managed to push myself to work out regularly again so hopefully I start shaping back up soon. Also been helping out with @ngame989‘s TGG series, and I have some interesting stuff for it that should be coming out soon. Also it’s now December so I made a bunch of new desktop backgrounds, got winter beers and gingerbread tea, set my tree up, and have crackling fire + Christmas music on just about 24/7. Finally, I’m going to PAX Unplugged next weekend! It’ll be a ton of fun, especially getting to play the new Acq. Inc. stuff instead of Adventurer’s League, so I’m really excited for that!

Of Blood and Betrayal (Part 1/3)

Hey everyone! Here’s my Captain Swan Supernatural Summer fanfic! Special thanks again to @kmomof4 and @cssns for creating this project! I’m so glad that our fandom can still stay active after the show’s ended.

Without further ado, here’s my story!

(Rated M; you have been warned!)

Emma Swan looked in the mirror once more before heading out.

It was probably overkill to dress up as one of the dancers. But women weren’t often clients of The Bloodsucker, a well-known haunt of male vampires. She was dressed in the skimpiest costume she had ever seen. Donning a red satin bra that showed off her ample cleavage and a matching lace skirt, she hoped to seduce her guy.

The club’s music pounded with every step she took in her stiletto heels. Infiltrating the place wasn’t the trouble; she has her connections. The problem was how to take the guy in. Normally, she would seduce the guy into having a drink (or many) and let him take her to his place, spending a night of pleasure. It was no secret that these creatures had a high-sex drive and very erotic fantasies. Once asleep, she would drug him and take him back to the agency. It’s no wonder why they all call her a femme fatale.

Emma Swan’s a vampire hunter of Gold Inc. and right now, there’s a perp to take in.

He sat in a dark corner, drinking rum. Clad in a dark navy suit, he looked quite dashing. His blue eyes complimented his navy suit as he sat there, quietly observing his surroundings. At first glance, he didn’t look as dangerous as they said. He looked quite dashing and dignified. But when he opened his mouth to sip his drink, Emma could see the sharp glint of his fangs.

Many had attempted to bring him in for his crimes, but all had failed. It was up to her now and she had everything planned out.

Sauntering her way there, she pretended not to notice as his eyes raked over her. Even in the dim lighting, she could see his expression and he certainly enjoyed what he was seeing. The music took on a provocative tone; she swayed her hips to the beat and enjoyed how his gaze never left hers. His eyes dropped to her bosom and he licked his lips, exposing his sharp fangs; he definitely enjoyed what he was seeing.

“Care for a dance, sir?” she said in a sultry voice.

“That depends,” he whispered. Her heart skipped a beat when she realized he had a British accent; it made him far more attractive than before. “Will you have a drink with me?”

“I don’t usually drink with my clients,” she said in a low voice.

“Perhaps you should try something new, darling,” he replied, pouring her a shot.

Emma figured she could indulge him. After all, there was plenty of time to get him where she wanted him. Clinking their glasses together, she gulped down the shot, feeling its burn down her throat.

“What’s your name? I haven’t seen you here before,” he said curiously, eyes scanning every inch of her body. She resisted the urge to shiver; he made her feel far more naked and vulnerable than she was.

“Swan,” she said, thinking quickly; granted, it was her last name, but he would probably think it was just a stage name. “Yours?”

“I don’t give my name to strippers,” he said plainly, taking another shot of rum. “Helps me protect my….privacy.”

“Speaking of privacy,” she said alluringly, putting a hand on her arm. “How about a dance?”

He grinned wolfishly, watching her stand up and offer her hand.

“It’s a deal.”

The velvet room, a much more private setting, was quieter than the main floor. In fact, with the emptiness of it, the silence felt deafening. Emma led him to the couch where he seated himself patiently and arched a brow; damn, he looked so attractive when he did that.

“No touching,” she reminded him.

“As you wish, milady,” he replied with a cocky grin.

She rolled her eyes and turned on the music. Instead of blasting a loud rhythm, it was a slow and erotic beat that definitely fit their mood. Emma looked back at her client, finding him waiting patiently. His blue eyes bore into her, an unwavering gaze that made her nervous for what she was about to do. Hell, she’d done it many times before. Why was this time any different?

Pushing away those intrusive thoughts, she rolled back her shoulders and swayed her hips to the beat. His eyes traveled further down her body; she didn’t miss his subsequent gulp when she began roaming her hands over her body. She cupped her breasts, feeling her nipples harden in the sheer bra. Emma threw her head back, her golden curls cascading across her shoulders. She made sure that he got a good view of her ass as she moved her body to the music.

“Bloody hell,” he whispered, staring at her like she was a heavenly gift.

Emma noted the bulge in his pants and smiled. Most men didn’t even begin to get hard with a simple dance. This was good; he was absolute putty in his hands and she would use that to her advantage. She tore her gaze away from his growing erection and walked up to him. She could feel his breath against her exposed skin and leaned forward so he could get closer look down her cleavage.

“Last warning,” she said. “No touching.”

He nodded and opened his mouth to say something, but his voice dropped to a groan once she straddled him. Her warm, wet heat was just inches away from his crotch and he definitely sensed it, judging from his reaction. She rubbed her body sensously against him, feeling his firm figure. She pushed her golden locks over her shoulder and started moving faster, feeling him grow harder.

He growled when she stood up, pulling away from his body. But his reaction was replaced with an even deeper groan when she turned and began rubbing her toned ass against his crotch. Moving her hips sinuously, she sighed and moved faster, enjoying his struggle to remain as quiet as possible.

“Make all the noise you want. It’s just us in here. You and me,” she said.

“Aye,” he said in a strangled voice.

She continued her seductive actions and stilled her body, long after the music finally ended. Her hands remained on his shoulders. As her gaze met his, she could tell he knew that she wanted more. Alas, their time together was up and she probably should get his number or contact information. Otherwise, he would slip right through her grasp.

“Do you….I know it’s quite impetuous of me, but do you wish to spend the night with me?”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. This was more than she could have asked for. She knew the penthouse Killian Jones lived at and while asleep, she could gather intel on him. Perhaps he would have some incriminating documents hidden or solid evidence, admitting his crimes. How could she pass up such an opportunity?

“Of course….let me just, er, finish my shift up. Meet you outside in an hour?”

He winked, kissing her hand. “It’s a date.”

Emma Swan stepped into his apartment, gaping at every inch of his living room. Windows ran from the floor to the ceiling; the entire skyline of New York City could be seen, glowing in the night. His living room was furnished extensively and polished to a gleam. Decorated with a nautical theme, the room’s dim lighting exuded a sense of mystery. Emma examined an intricately decorated vase on a pedestal.

“You live here?” she said incredulously.

“Alas, it’s only one of my many domiciles. I take it you’re impressed?”

“Uh huh,” she said, gazing at everything she could see, hoping such details would come in handy later when she reported back to her boss.

“Love, would you….care to accompany me to the bedroom?” he said, trying to get her attention.

“Right, right,” she said, allowing him to lead her down the hall. “Sorry, I just live in a really small studio apartment and I couldn’t believe all this stuff. Do you sleep in a coffin?”

“Of course not!” he said, looking affronted at her comment. “That’s only for a select few of us.”

“Ok, ok. I didn’t mean to be….vampire-cist or anything,” she said, grinning.

He led her into his bedroom; Emma was unsurprised to see how clean and well-organized everything was. But it didn’t look like anything special for a vampire. Just a four-poster bed with curtains and black velvet sheets.

“If you’re still in the mood, Swan, I have another room that might be more fitting to our….date tonight,” he said with a wink.

“Sure,” she said, allowing herself to be led to another room, which he had to unlock with a key. He winked at her once more before opening the door, gesturing for her to go in first. She entered brazenly, unprepared for what she was about to see.

It was a sex dungeon. Or a sex room, really. Despite the dim lighting, she could see the impressive whips and chains that decorated the dark walls. A bed with blood-red curtains and sheets stood against the wall with a treasure chest at the end. Assorted furniture (no doubt meant for pleasures and tortures) were scattered across the room. In the corner, a mahogany cabinet’s doors were open, revealing erotic costumes and lacy lingerie.

“Wow, you….really went all out,” Emma said, finding it difficult to stare in one place.

“Startling, isn’t it? I do hope you get used to it,” Killian said sensually as he unlocked the treasure chest at the foot of the bed.

“Are you….expecting me to come back?” Emma asked, her voice growing higher.

“Well, I certainly hope do,” he said, grinning wolfishly. “You look like a tough lass. An adventurous one too, I’d say.”

She looked in his hand, eyes widening when she realized what he was holding. Handcuffs and a blindfold.

A shiver ran through her as he licked his lips, ogling every inch of her. His fangs shone in the scant light of the room.Though she was dressed in a sweater and tight jeans, she felt vulnerable and naked under his gaze. Nevertheless, even if she had to play the part, it didn’t mean she wasn’t going to enjoy it. Especially with a vampire as attractive as him. She would never forget this conquest of hers.

“Well, you’re definitely right,” she replied, grasping the collar of his shirt and bringing him in for a kiss. He was caught off-guard, but he responded with equal enthusiasm. She could feel a low growl of pleasure in his throat as he drew her closer. With all the vampires she had kissed, never had she encountered one with such alacrity. His fangs nipped at her bottom lip as he pulled away, suddenly looking a tad uneasy.

“Love, I….I wish to drink from you. When you climax, of course. That’s when your blood will be the most luscious. Is that alright?”

“Wow, a vampire who asks for permission,” she joked, deftly taking off her sweater. “Yeah, sure. Go for it.”

She didn’t miss his gulp as he gazed at her breasts encased in white lace.

“As you wish, my dear.”

Before she could gasp, he swept her up in his arms and deposited her on the bed. He quickly took off her jeans and shoes, revealing panties that matched her bra.

“Gorgeous,” he whispered, inhaling her scent.

Emma gasped. It had been a long time since she had bedded a man who was willing to go down on her. The vampire knelt between her legs, finding her core as wet and ready as he expected. He ran his tongue over her soaked folds, enjoying the squeals that came out of her mouth as he continued with his devotion. Then, he abruptly stopped.

“What the hell?” Emma gasped, wishing for him to continue.

“It just remembered,” he said with a wolfish grin. “Do you enjoy being tied up?”

He wasted no time, getting the handcuffs from atop the chest. Her hands were cuffed to the headboard and she suddenly regretted asking him to do this. Wasn’t she supposed to bring him in? She allowed herself to relax, remembering that she’d been in tougher binds than this. Handcuffs were nothing; she could get out of them in a cinch.

He blindfolded her too, leaving her completely at his mercy and removed her bra, gently squeezing her nipples. Without wasting a second, he plunged himself into her wet heat, causing her to moan. When Jeff Bezos formed Cadabra, Inc., in 1994, I’m sure he had a business plan in mind. He’s a smart cookie, and like anyone trained in business and finance, he knew he needed his own road map. I just doubt it included global domination at the time.

Today, Bezos is slowly taking over the world of everything, and the company’s latest move into shipping signifies it is not satisfied leaving any one aspect of its operations uncontrolled. Why be only the world’s biggest e-commerce provider when you can also control the supply chain of everything you sell?

Amazon Logistics and its subsidiary Beijing Century Joyo Courier Service Co. are now able to provide door-to-door shipping of Chinese-made products that Amazon sells. Stateside, Amazon is also beefing up its airplane and truck fleets, meaning that all middlemen and any other dependencies are removed from the equation. The only part Amazon does not own is the manufacturing aspect, which it has wisely left to others.

The practically invisible aspect of this side of Amazon is likely to remain unnoticed to the casual observer, yet it is critical to the firm’s efficiencies and bottom line. Name another large retailer with its own shipping fleet. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Thought so.

It is a strategy not unlike the firm’s venture into cloud servers in 2002, known as AWS, or Amazon Web Services. Amazon did not want to be dependent upon anyone else’s servers to run its growing e-commerce portal, so it developed its own. Along the way, though, they acquired so much excess capacity that they lease large portions of it out to others, and now control 40% of the global cloud server market. Companies like Netflix, Spotify, and Pinterest rely on AWS, as does NASA and about a million other firms and governmental agencies. You didn’t know that, right?

But other aspects of Amazon’s quest for global domination include its Alexa voice assistant product line, as well as its Prime movies and music (which, of course, use AWS). While Alexa is far ahead of all wannabe competitors, it still has a way to go with music and movies. You can bet, though, that Bezos, having savored the sweet taste of success in e-commerce and cloud computing, wants more.

A lot more. As in most of it.

It’s a strange mix of efforts, with some in our face, the others operating quietly behind the scenes, but together they make up a company whose stock has topped $2100 in the last year (it is now just under $1700). Some aspects of business are invisible by design as they provide the necessary infrastructure to make the visible parts--the products and services--accessible to everyone.

As for Bezos, while he probably didn’t start out with plans to rule the world, he quickly saw the potential. Although the richest man in the world will probably see his rankings take a nose dive once his divorce is final, he will still be in position to climb back up the ladder, all the while getting not one, but two feet, inside our doors.

And as for Cadabra, Bezos has to at least be credited with realizing the folly of his chosen company name early on. Because if he hadn’t, the whole thing may have been one rotten smelling cadaver. I can only wonder what his next conquest will be. I’m betting he will buy a major brick and mortar retailer, as it is the missing link in all of this. Ready to place your bets?

Media portrays and perpetuates gender-specific behaviors through their representation of males and females. This portrayal is gender-specific in that there is a representation of actions that are intended for only one sex. That is, a job that is intended for only males or females based on representation. This representation influences and affects our relationships, interactions and overall socialization. Although, they are often confused and related, the word sex and gender are not synonymous. Sex is biological and assigned at birth while gender is the values and cultural roles usually associated with each sex. There are many changes needed in the way media portrays and represent gender, gender roles and gender expectations.

Media can be defined as the outlets and tools used to transmit and share information with people. Gender stereotypes are transmitted through television, advertisement, music and many other forms of media. From the moment we are able to understand, there are specific roles and behaviors that are expected based on sex. Females are expected to be innocent and desirable while men should be brave and strong. The aspirations for females traditionally are expected to be marriage and motherhood. Whereas men are groomed to be the head of the household financially and authority wise. There are expectations associated with how we dress, speak and behave.

Firstly, our life goals as either male or female is portrayed through media in an unrealistic and stereotypical light. Little girls learn through countless princess movies that were made and are still being made that their happily ever after will be achieved through love from a handsome prince. It is expected that a female’s main goal should be to find a husband and become a mother, which these princess movies highlight by focusing on what they portray as romantic relationships. They also portray and idolize what is the deemed the perfect relationship, which conflicts with the reality of actual relationships. From a tender age, females are taught that this is the ultimate goal, “happily ever-after".

For males, the princes are viewed as handsome, wealthy and the hero of the story. Promoting the notion that masculinity is having to be the provider, the one that saves the day. These fairytales promote images that are misconstrued for both males and females as not all females grow up to marry or have children and not all males are the breadwinners for their families, which does not make them any less feminine or masculine. For example, in the fairy tale Cinderella. There have been many renditions of this classic that teaches girls that life does not get better until they meet a handsome prince to rescue them from an unpleasant lifestyle.

Secondly, the media influence the way we dress and what attire is considered masculine or feminine. A person's way of dress becomes an important marker for their gender identity. From the moment we are born gender roles are assigned through our attire. It is expected that a baby would be dressed in a specific color to identify whether they were male or female. Pink symbolizing that the child is a girl and blue being boy. These colors are then deemed feminine or masculine. Using attire to shape and understand another person’ gender identity is then embedded in our socialization. For example, when males wear clothing that are mostly portrayed by the media as attire for women there are connotations made about their sexuality and identity as a man. Whenever females dress in a manner that is considered more masculine, she is labelled as a tomboy and the same assumptions may be drawn about her sexuality and gender identity.

Lastly, the most common stereotypical representation by the media that needs to change is the portrayal of qualities that are supposed to be associated with each gender. Females are expected to be submissive, desirable and soft-spoken, while men are expected to be rough, assertive, aggressive and more focused on sexual conquests. The media’s portrayal of femininity and masculinity becomes what is expected of the sexes. For example, boys are told countlessly to “be a man” or “men don’t cry”. When in reality, crying is a human quality that is a normal part of grief or sadness and is not associated with weakness or a specific gender.

Movies, television shows, music and even modern culture are a tremendous influence when it comes to gendered expectations of masculinity and femininity. Gatekeepers and media content creators should strive to be more careful with the messages that are being released. For example, women are highly underrepresented within the media which can be changed. The stereotypical connotations of men and women can be altered to reflect a more neutral and uplifting view. Changes are being made, for example with the release of Princesses in fairy tales such as Moana and Frozen where the stereotypical love story was not necessary to the plot of the story. However, there is much more work needed in how we view and represent the genders.
