Fred Karno was born Frederick John Westcott in Exeter in 1866 (died 1941).

His family moved to Nottingham, where he grew up. He began his career as an acrobat, joining Ted Tysell and Bob Sewall. They added comedy to their acrobatics and created excellent slapstick. Fred wrote sketches for them. He then moved from performing to managing groups of performers. He became one of the greatest music hall impresarios. He had many troupes touring the world. His entertainment factory, from which many of the UK's tours departed, was located at 28 Vaughan Road (now Southwell Road), Loughborough Junction, between Brixton and Camberwell. In 1906 Sydney Chaplin joined Fred Karno's troupe. In February 1908 Sydney arranged work for his younger brother Charlie. Another famous comedian, Stan Laurel, also found work with Karno's troupe and many others. In 1910-1911 the Karno group performed in America. Many famous people gained their first experience with comedy and slapstick in Fred Karno's ranks.

In 2012, the Music Hall Society of Great Britain and America placed a blue plaque on the house on Southwell Road, where Fred Karno had his Fun Factory. Parts of the building now houses artists in Clockwork Studios and can be visited on open studios event. Old photos of the Fun Factory and some modern recreation by photographer Conor Masterson, line the hallway of the studios.
