was thinking about it this morning as i was making tea and i think there's a fundamental gap in the advice we give to writers/creators to "first and foremost create for ourselves", bc yes. in the beginning, i am almost always writing for myself. i write all the time, and im sure that artists doodle and paint all the time too. there are things i've written that will never see the light of day and are truly just for me.

and then there are things that i choose to share, because i want to share them. because i'm proud of a story, and want to put it into the world. the act of sharing it is, above all, an invitation.

its me inviting you into a corner of my mind/heart/soul, opening the window and throwing open the curtains and waving, holding up a sign that says "hi! do you like this too? let's talk about it!"

what im asking for is a connection, a conversation. a shared space. digital or otherwise. and the so-called "harm" of "ghost consumption" is not that artists will stop creating art or that writers will stop writing -- no, that's not quite how creativity works (thankfully, and sometimes unfortunately). we will always create.

we just might not be inspired to share it anymore.

I am begging on my knees for some of the Yautja Fanboys to stop embedding their discussion on female Yautja with their internalized misogyny.

No, Female Yautja aren't less prone to combat. They literally are just in charge of everything else and it's less likely for them to leave to go off planet for such a long time. It's canon that they will sometimes break male Yautja's bone during mating when they get too excited/throw them.

And most importantly, they do not just look like giant sexy human women with more reptilian traits! There is canon variation in their build and appearance outside being bipedal and sometimes the presence of breasts, but they aren't bigger human women with some paint and scales slapped on!

While I'm on my disruptive Tolkien opinions kick:

Yes, obviously, he was a conservative Catholic and this was really important to his understanding of the world and pervades his work and so on and so forth.

But I'm a bit "..." about reducing everything he thought and felt about the world to that. Like, yeah, there's a tradition of conservative pastoralism that meant the context of his environmental opinions was not inherently progressive in the way it can mistakenly seem in 2024. Do I think he was Like That about trees because of conservative pastoralism, or his Catholicism, or that the particular form taken by his TREES TREES TREES #OLDMANWILLOWDIDNOTHINGWRONG TREEEEEEEEES ethos much resembles most of his contemporaries' feelings?

Not really.

I mean, he would never have said it, but I kind of doubt whether his very sincere and deeply felt veneration of the actual figures of his religion was truly comparable to how he felt about things like That One Oak on the Corner That I Liked Got Chopped Down by Evildoers. I've read other conservative British writers of this era who have their own forms of pastoralism and most of them are way less intense about it. I truly don't think Tolkien loved trees the way he did Because Catholicism or whatnot. I genuinely think he just really loved trees.

Basically, I can imagine some alternate universe in which alternate Tolkien ends up with really different beliefs about religion, about politics, about all sorts of things. But I can absolutely not imagine a universe in which any version of Tolkien did not take the part of trees against all their enemies.

Just wanted to say thanks for all these posts you're making about minstrelsy and racism in animation. I'm a white brit, and this is not something I was ever taught about. Genuinely, I had never heard minstrel be used for anything except the medieval type bard/jester. Even the little bit I know about blackface and other early racist entertainment I only learned through seeing things other people have posted online over the years, and then going to do research about it on my own.

So thank you for helping me learn more about this, and hopefully you pointing this stuff out will help teach more people like me, who did not know about this stuff.

Of all the fandoms I've been in it is genuinely surprising to me that I have never once seen a Streamer AU for Yugioh despite the entire franchise being about games. Make Yugi a game streamer and Atem his supportive boyfriend who only comes on stream to give him food or hugs or say hi when he comes home from work. Now and then they do couple streams together and everyone is always surprised at how competitive they are because Yugi is usually very chill and calm but the moment he's in multiplayer games he's like a demon unleashed. He's going full gremlin mode to impede Atem's 100% Mario runs, put them in an Uno lobby with Kaiba and Joey and you'll be looking at hundreds of casualties

And then the next day Yugi is back to being a chill calm streamer talking about his new hamster Kuriboh and if you go in here you'll see Atem's python, Slifer, you get the idea
