I'm so sorry this is late, but better late than never! Also, happy (belated) Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day!! Thank you so much for sending this, what a fun question!

Okay, this is tough!! I think it's gonna be this little exchange from My Ego Dies -

“Come in, Thorin,” he called. “The door is unlocked.” There was a sharp intake of breath, and a half second longer of silence, before the door was opened quite quickly. Bilbo suddenly couldn’t move. He wanted to turn, to look and see, to meet the eyes of his long lost love, but he couldn’t. Instead he continued to stare almost absently into the fire as he waited. Would Thorin banish him again? Would he be angry? Would he… be pleased? He did not expect the strained, out of breath huff that followed. “Why have you left your door unlocked? It’s dangerous.” Oh, it certainly was dangerous, that was for sure. “Were you… expecting me?” Bilbo snorted a nervous little laugh at that. “I can safely say I was not, no.” “How did you know it was me?” Thorin sounded very out of breath, and Bilbo vaguely wondered if he had run all the way from the mountain to get here. Wouldn’t that have been a sight. “I recognised the sound of your footfalls,” he replied, a tiny smile kicking up the corner of his mouth. Not out of humour this time, but rather out of a long nursed fondness.

I will just always have such a soft spot for this fic, I think it's my favourite I've ever written, and as much as I enjoy grand, sweeping romance (and hoooo boy, do I ever!) my favourite kind of way to show love is in the small moments. Bilbo recognising Thorin from his gait alone just scratches that itch for me, you know?

It's said the Arkenstone is the literal heart of the mountain with a pulse of its own, ensuring life can sustain within it, but it's also been said that the Arkenstone can drive any king mad. Not every curse of madness is the same. When Thorin Oakenshield is plucked from his eternal slumber by some miracle of the stone, he must work with Bilbo to navigate this new world and what it means for the both of them.

Chapter 8

“I just don’t understand what path you’re wanting to lead us down,” Dain explained with a sigh, tired, and clearly caught somewhere between his dwarves and the loyalty to his cousin. “Thorin, you have done much for the dwarves, and I see that your heart still cares for them, but everything you’ve been delegating and insisting on, makes no damn sense!”

Thorin’s eyes merely narrowed before Balin was stepping up to try to ease the hostility growing in the form of a mob—an armed one, at that.

“There are many parts of Erebor that need fixing, and the interior is one of them. Spiritually, as well as its actual structure, that is what Thorin is after. Peace within, and then looking outward.”

There were grumbles and comments among the surrounding dwarves, causing Thorin’s gaze to flicker around, catching unpleasant tones and expressions being cast his way. No matter how he tried to explain what was going on, it all sounded so incredibly confusing. Dain was a straightforward kind of dwarf, as were those following him, and toeing around the reality of it all was causing frustration among many. How did you explain that a bunch of spirits were haunting the mountain?

Horse chestnut is native to the Balkan Peninsula. It was first introduced to the UK from Turkey in the late 16th century and widely planted. Though rarely found in woodland, it is a common sight in parks, gardens, streets and on village greens. Conkers cover the tree in autumn. Five Fic Feedback

So thank you for the tag @conkers-thecosy and for bringing it over here to Bagginshield. It's much appreciated.

I have a fair few Bagginshield/Hobbit fics (47 to be precise) so I figured I would go with the the two most kudos'd fics, the two least and one in the middle to make it as fair as I can.

1) Stop me Fading - So, most know how this is what got me back into fandom and like Tolkein, started as a bedtime story for my boy (cause BOTFA made him sad lol) and I know my writing has improved drastically, I know it needs a rewrite but it was my first fanfic in 20 years and I love the story and the idea behind it.

What others think - It's my highest kudos'd fic (It is also my oldest) but by the comments on it, people really seem to enjoy it and the idea behind it.

2) Defying Death (or at least the ones in charge) - I think this is one of my fav fics, Afterlife is one of my favourite tropes and BAMF Bilbo too. When we talk about self-indulgent fics, this is mine, and I still love it as much as when I wrote it.

What others think - I guess I'm not the only one who loved BAMF Bilbo, and reading about him taking on valar and an entire mountian of dwarves to get to Thorin seems to tickles others fancy too

3) The Demented King Under the Mountain - My one and only attempt at Horror/Thriller (?) I dont know, but I'm not going to lie, it isnt one I re read often (all at all).

What others think - I mean, the comments are so kind, and its in the middle of the kudos, o for those that like the darker stuff. I'm really glad they enjoy it.

4) Far over the Misty Mountains:A hobbit with a heart - Not one of my best, but it was a fun little write.

What others think - I think a fair few people think it's cute. It is, however, on the shoter side at only 850ish words.

5) The Last Durin Princess returns home - If I have one underrated fic, it's this one. As a fandom, we don't give Dis enough credit, but I do understand considering if we follow BOTFA like this fic does, it's just pure sadness for her. That being said, the Princess Undr the Mountain deserves all the love, and I love this fic, no matter how sad it is, that I wrote about her.

What others think - the few people who have commented on it or spoken to me about it seem to like it in that post-BOFTA sadness kind of way. So i'm glad for that and sorry for making them sad.

I have one good omens fic, but I mostly write Bagginshield, and I see myself doing that for the foreseeable future.

I absolutely do. I like to show my appreciation to everyone who has taken the time to read my work! I don't always respond super fast, but I do respond.

Q5. have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes.

Q6. have you ever cowritten a fic before?

No, but I want to! I actually have an idea for one that I think would be fun.

Bagginshield. All day, every day. Tattooed to my body.

I like to think I have good pacing and characterization.

My beta reader has full edit access to all my docs because I refuse to post something unless she edits it first. My dyslexic arse misses far too many things.

I have read so much fan fiction, but the Hobbit fandom was the first time I actually felt inspired to write something. I couldn't be more happy about that.

CONKERS 1950s STYLE

It’s Autumn, which means it must be time for conkers!

Playing conkers could well be one of those peculiarly British childhood pursuits. It used to be hugely popular, mainly among young boys. I well remember scouring the ground underneath the Horse Chestnut trees in our local park every year, searching for that perfect beast that would take on all comers.

Over time, though, more and more schools have banned conker tournaments, often citing health and safety grounds (a conker flying off its string might hit somebody in the eye… The horror! The horror!)—although I suspect all the arguments and fights about who won might also have been a factor (some boys used to soak their conkers in vinegar to harden them, or even varnish them, the cheating bastards).

These photos were taken in September 1950 to illustrate an article about just such a ban at the grammar school these boys attended, which explains why they’re keeping a careful look out for any passing masters. The boys would say that a keen eye and a steady hand is needed to be successful at conkers—so no doubt they’ll be appreciative of their Headmaster’s similar prowess with the junior cane whilst it’s being vigorously applied to their backsides after the photographer has gone!

I love dungeon crawlers. I'm making one inspired mainly by Shin Megami Tensei, and I've been posting about Dragon Quest (will eventually do other games), but I'm also into D&D, and always pour over the dungeon maps whenever I get a new sourcebook, and like exploring old issues of Dungeon magazine.

I remembered recently a core childhood memory that probably explains why I appreciate the art of the dungeon itself, and it's this issue of Nintendo Power (#121, June 1999):

I probably picked this up at a Blockbuster Video off the rack, as at that age Pokemon was everything and everywhere. Right around the time they had those kiosks where you could print photos you took in Pokemon Snap. But, as I found an archived copy of this issue, and the memories came flooding back (I remembered all the old articles and ads, and the fan art other kids sent in still stuck out to me as something I forgot I remembered), another thing jumped out at me - the guide to Conker's Pocket Tales, a game I did own. But, the game itself had less of an impact on me than these pages:

Sprawling mazes with spike traps, bottomless pits, bats, slimes, puzzles, animated statues, secret passages, and evil wizards? Forget it, this was my version of the Tomb of Horrors as a kid. I spend hours looking at these pages, imagining a little guy running around, tracing my way through the dungeon, and that pattern has burned it's way into my brain permanently as I play dungeon crawlers, browse D&D adventure modules, and look at game maps online.

I think I'm going to make some dungeon appreciation posts occasionally.

When news of the first caravan from Ered Luin hits the mountain, Bilbo and Tauriel find themselves anxious of meeting the Princess of Erebor. Together they set out to make a great first impression - hopefully.

“I don’t see why you’re so worried.”

“This is your sister. The mother of your nephews, and one of the greatest dwarves I’ve heard about over the past several months. If I don’t make a good impression with—Thorin I’m serious!”

Thorin had fallen into a small fit of laughter, only for a pillow to be thrown at his head.

“I already hear from the dwarves of the Iron Hills that it will be impossible to impress the masses based on my being a hobbit, that doesn’t worry me. What does worry me is impressing your family,” Bilbo sighed, taking a seat on the side of the bed and rubbing his fingers at his temples. “I feel…inadequate most days, and the fact you’ve chosen me to be your spouse still baffles me. Earning Dis’ approval could help me see past some of that.”

A few beats of silence passed, save for the sound of fabrics shifting as Thorin moved across the bed to sit near his intended’s side. “You’re far from inadequate, Kurdûn,” he purred reassuringly, resting his hands on Bilbo’s shoulders. “I hate that you feel this way, Bilbo, and I have every confidence my sister will love you just…”

“Just?” Turning his head to the side to see Thorin there, rubbing at his shoulders from behind and pressing a kiss to his nose, Bilbo couldn’t help but snort, even if he felt more distressed than before.

“Just not as much as I love you.”

I generally try not to jump in on things that don't involve me, but I thought your tags on that post were a cool addition! and I didn't read them as hostile or snobbery. It wouldn't be fair for me to say that op overreacted as I'm very pro 'block whenever you want to curate your online experience' and that would make me a hypocrite, but I'm sorry that your tags were taken in a negative way. It's easy to read tone incorrectly online and I don't think enough people go into interactions giving the other person the benefit of assuming best intentions. I hope people stop being mean in your asks when you've clearly done all that you can while blocked.
