Alanna Vagianos at HuffPost:
Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday described in detail what it’s like for many women to have to travel out of their home state to access abortion care, marking the first time in recent memory that such a prominent political figure has magnified the real-life hurdles to obtaining care. In a speech at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s leadership conference, the Democratic presidential nominee provided a riveting warning about what could happen to the country if her rival, former President Donald Trump, wins the election in November. She reminded the crowd that Trump nominated three of the conservative justices who overturned the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade — and the landscape for reproductive health care has been dire ever since.
She broke down, step-by-step, what traveling for abortion care really looks like. Harris noted that around 40% of Latinas in the U.S. live in states that have enacted abortion restrictions since the repeal of federal abortion protections. “Understand that the majority of women who seek abortion care are mothers. Understand what that means for her,” Harris said to the crowd in Washington, D.C. Around 55% of women who have an abortion have already had one or more births, research shows. “So, she’s got to now travel to another state — God help her that she has some extra money to pay for that plane ticket. She’s got to figure out what to do with her kids — God help her if she has affordable child care,” she continued. “Imagine what that means: She has to leave her home to go to an airport, stand in a TSA [airport security] line — like, think about this.” Harris emphasized how terrifying it is for women to travel to a city they’ve never visited and receive medical care from a doctor they’ve never met.
“On any public policy, you have to ask: How is this going to affect a real person?” she said. “Go through the details.”
Last year alone, over 166,000 people traveled across state lines to get abortion care amid local restrictions on procedures. Abortion care providers have told HuffPost that many of the women who are forced to travel have never been on a plane before or don’t speak English. Often, they need to travel by themselves because they can only afford one plane ticket. Many have to rely on already struggling abortion funds to pay for travel and lodging costs. “She’s going to have to get right back to the airport because she [has] got to get back to those kids. And it’s not like her best friend can go with her because her best friend is probably taking care of the kids,” Harris said. “All because these people have decided they’re in a better position to tell her what’s in her best interest than she is. … It’s just simply wrong.”
Harris’ comments were only a small part of her speech Wednesday, but they were extremely powerful. They show how differently she approaches abortion policy than President Joe Biden. Although Biden supports restoring Roe, he has never been a full-throated advocate for abortion rights and rarely even says the word “abortion.” Harris has been the Biden administration’s biggest defender of abortion rights since the Supreme Court ruling that repealed Roe.
Speaking at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s leadership conference on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris (D) gave details about the reality of obtaining abortion services, which is a costly and expensive endeavor for a lot of people, as it involves lodging, gas, child care, and food costs. #HarrisWalz2024 #WeWontGoBack

VP Harris challenges Trump on immigration
September 19, 2024
Robert B. Hubbell
On Wednesday, VP Kamala Harris spoke at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Harris took on Trump's nightmarish threat to deport millions of immigrants if he is elected.
Harris said,
While we fight to move our nation forward to a brighter future, Donald Trump and his extremist allies will keep trying to pull us backward. We all remember what they did to tear families apart, and now they have pledged to carry out the largest deportation, a mass deportation, in American history. Imagine what that would look like and what that would be? How’s that going to happen? Massive raids? Massive detention camps? What are they talking about?
Harris’s speech is here: Harris delivers remarks at Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute leadership event.
As VP Harris said, it is a dangerous fantasy to believe that Trump could deport ten million immigrants. An operation of that scale is beyond the resources of the federal and state governments combined. Although the effort would not succeed, it would lead to economic chaos as the labor pool is jolted by the sudden disappearance of workers who fill entry level service jobs, harvest America’s crops, provide home care for the elderly, and provide significant portions of the workforce in construction, hospitality, and manufacturing industries.
If you don’t have time to watch Harris’s entire speech, I recommend viewing the segment in which she frames reproductive rights as one of the freedoms guaranteed to Americans. She also notes that 40% of Latina women live in states with Trump abortion bans: Harris addresses impact of Trump abortion bans on Latina women.
VP Harris’s comments on abortion and reproductive freedom are powerful and moving. She continues to be an effective, focused campaigner who is sticking to the Democratic messaging of “freedom” and “an opportunity economy.”
As a reminder, Kamala Harris’s Opportunity Economy focuses on making the lives of middle-class Americans better. Her proposals include a $6,000 tax credit for families with newborns, expansion of the child tax credit, expansion of the earned income credit, a $50,000 deduction for new business owners, making rent affordable, incentivizing the construction of 3 million starter homes (as opposed to McMansions), subsidizing $25,000 of the down payment for first time homeowners, and reducing the cost of prescription drugs. See Issues - Kamala Harris for President: Official Campaign Website.
The Federal Reserve cuts interest rates by 0.5%
The Biden-Harris administration significantly reduced inflation levels while sustaining robust growth in the US GDP. As a result, the Federal Reserve announced today that it was cutting the prime interest rate by 0.5% and suggested that additional cuts would be forth coming. See Federal Reserve Board - Federal Reserve issues FOMC statement.
Even Trump admitted that “it was a big cut,” although he suggested the timing was political. In truth, the cut was overdue. The Fed waited too long to reduce rates. See Common Dreams, Fed 'Waited Too Long' But Finally Cut Interest Rates. As noted in the Common Dreams article,
Center for Economic and Policy Research senior economist Dean Baker also welcomed that the Fed is changing course, saying: "This is a belated recognition that the battle against inflation has been won. Contrary to the predictions of almost all economists, including those at the Fed, this victory was won without a major uptick in unemployment."
Kamala Harris and Joe Biden achieved the nearly impossible—avoiding a recession while taming inflation. They deserve great credit for doing so—and voters are starting to realize that fact. See Harris closes gap with Trump on the economy, new Pennsylvania poll shows | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Per the Post-Gazette,
Pennsylvania voters no longer prefer former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris on the economy in a poll that shows the Democratic presidential nominee all but erasing the deficit on which candidate can best handle the top issue for voters this fall. In a Quinnipiac University poll of likely Pennsylvania voters released Wednesday, Trump’s advantage over Ms. Harris was just 50% to 48%, a two-point advantage well within the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
Harris continues to do everything just right. While there is no guarantee of success, we should be gratified that we have a candidate who is running such a terrific campaign!
Trump's effort to cram voter suppression bill through Congress fails
Trump ordered Speaker Mike Johnson to make a futile attempt to pass a continuing resolution for the budget that included the GOP voter-suppression bill that would require proof of citizenship to register as a voter. (Note that our nation has survived for 235 years without requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote.) The bill was doomed to fail—and Mike Johnson knew it. But Trump ordered him to jump and Johnson’s only question was, “How high, sir?”
See Roll Call, Johnson's stopgap funding package goes down to defeat.
To be clear, Trump wants to force the US into a financial crisis for political advantage. He said on Truth Social,
If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form.
But extremists in the GOP caucus know that Mike Johnson will cave. Per Marjorie Taylor Greene, “Johnson is leading a fake fight that he has no intention of actually fighting.”
Americans deserve better than a House GOP caucus willing to hold the budget hostage for Donald Trump.
Trump's desperation is showing
Trump is promising tax cuts like a man who can smell defeat. On Wednesday, he promised New Yorkers that he would remove caps on federal deductions for state and local taxes (SALT). Trump's position is absurd because he proposed and obtained the SALT caps as a way of punishing taxpayers in New York, New Jersey, and California (among other states). Now that he senses that he might lose, he is telling voters in those states that he will remove the caps he instituted.
Members of Congress immediately trashed the idea. Although capping the SALT deduction was unfair to taxpayers in states that fund their operations and pay into the federal coffers, reversing the policy would add $1.2 trillion dollars to the deficit. See HuffPost, Donald Trump’s Latest Tax Pander Flops In Congress.
Trump's flip-flop is a sign of his willingness to promise anything to anyone to be re-elected. Trump's desperation is a more reliable sign of the state of the race than the polls!
Wall Street Journal debunks JD Vance immigrant / cat story
The Wall Street Journal published an article on Wednesday that reported (a) the city manager of Springfield told JD Vance that there was no evidence to support the cat-eating immigrant story before JD Vance doubled-down on the false claim on social media, and (b) the woman who filed a police report claiming her cat had been taken by Haitians later found her cat hiding in the basement of her house.
See Wall Street Journal, How the Trump Campaign Ran With Rumors About Pet-Eating Migrants—After Being Told They Weren’t True (This article is accessible to all.)
Per the WSJ,
[Vance] asked point-blank, ‘Are the rumors true of pets being taken and eaten?’” recalled [Springfield City Manager] Heck. “I told him no. There was no verifiable evidence or reports to show this was true. I told them these claims were baseless.” By then, Vance had already posted about the rumors to his 1.9 million followers on X. Yet he kept the post up, and repeated an even more insistent version of the claim the next morning.
The WSJ article takes a deep dive into the situation in Springfield and is well worth your time to read the entire article. The WSJ reporters lay out in detail how Vance and Trump are exploiting an immigrant population that is helping Springfield to grow and prosper after decades of decline:
The local economy boomed. Business owners said they were grateful to have workers eager to work long shifts and do what it took to meet production goals. New subdivisions sprung up in the cornfields outside town. New restaurants opened. The Haitian flag flew at City Hall.
Growth came with growing pains. The number of non-native English speakers in the public schools quadrupled to more than 1,000 children. The local clinic and hospital were overwhelmed with people fleeing a country where healthcare had been scant. Traffic increased, as did frustration with drivers more accustomed with the chaotic streets of Port-au-Prince than the orderly grid of Springfield.
One thing is clear: Vance and Trump know the rumors have no basis in fact but continue to promote them—thereby hurting the people of Springfield. Trump claims he will visit Springfield—over the objections of the mayor and the Governor of Ohio (both Trump-supporting Republicans!). The fact that Republicans in Ohio understand the cynical dishonesty of Trump's propaganda is a good sign

Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris has just unveiled yet another new accent while delivering a speech before the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
During her speech, Harris appeared to mysteriously adopt a Spanish twang while addressing the Hispanic Caucus.
Harris was born in California and spent a large part of her childhood growing up in an affluent area of Canada.
The vice president has been accused of putting on Midwestern, Southern, and even French accents during speeches, depending on who her audience is.
On Wednesday, social media erupted after a video of Harris showed her speaking with a Spanish twang while talking at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual Leadership Conference.
The latest “fake accent” took Americans by surprise.
Harris appeared to say “I love you back” with a Spanish twang to a group of her supporters on Wednesday.

CHCI Leadership Conference Illuminates Path to Financial Empowerment for Hispanics
Amidst the 23rd Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Leadership Conference, a transformative forum emerged, providing invaluable insights into securing financial futures for Latino families. Titled "Building a Legacy: Empowering Latino Families Financially," this panel convened experts from the financial, tourism, and real estate sectors. The event was warmly inaugurated by Congressman Vicente González (TX-34) of Texas, who passionately emphasized their dedication to aiding the Hispanic population of the United States to attain homes under equitable conditions, thereby ensuring their future and fostering wealth creation.
Congressman Vicente González articulated, "Our focus is on empowering Hispanic college students to access education as a gateway to unlocking superior retirement prospects, nurturing generational wealth, and fostering stability for entire families, not merely individuals. Hispanics advance collectively as a family."
Sponsored by industry leaders such as JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Nareit, Airbnb, and the National Association of Realtors, this panel was a testament to the collective commitment to the Hispanic community. John H. Jones the Senior Vice President of Government Relations at Nareit, underscored the profound significance of diverse asset investments within the stock market, including investments in real estate companies, data centers, health facilities, multi-family apartment complexes, cell towers, distribution centers, and entertainment venues. This diversification offers Latinos a robust pathway toward creating a lasting legacy and accruing wealth.
At its core, this initiative seeks to empower Latinos by imparting the knowledge and resources essential for realizing the American dream. Key leaders play a pivotal role in shaping America's economic trajectory, with their influence channeled into educating others on wealth creation, prudent investment, homeownership, and equity.
The panelists highlighted the importance of educating the Hispanic community about a myriad of financial options, with a particular focus on real estate and stock market investments. Noreen Henriquez of JP Morgan delved into the realm of economic inclusion, highlighting the available resources, including the online platform Chase Financial Goals, as a rich source for learning about financial planning and wealth-building strategies.
In conclusion, the "Building a Legacy" panel at the CHCI Leadership Conference serves as a beacon of hope and knowledge for Hispanics in the USA. Its mission is to equip them with the tools required to secure their financial futures, achieve the American dream, and foster enduring wealth for generations to come.

Walter Einenkel at Daily Kos:
Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to Latino leaders at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, deftly tailoring her stump speech to break down how Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s existing and proposed policies hurt individual Americans. The Democratic presidential nominee spoke about her GOP opponent’s promise to “terminate every open border of the Biden administration” and “begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.” Trump has made this sweeping statement numerous times, and has even threatened to deport legally documented immigrants. “Imagine what that would look like and what that would be,” Harris said. “How's that going to happen? Massive raids? Massive detention camps? What are they talking about?”  Harris also reminded the audience that Trump’s inhumanity was already on full display during his first turn in the White House, with families separated at the border and migrant children detained for prolonged periods of time in “jail-like facilities.”
Kamala Harris torched Donald Trump’s unfeasible mass deportation scheme at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.

HBCUs have built a collective brand, getting renewed presidential attention since the Trump administration and using their political clout to push Congress for money to upgrade aging campuses they say have long been underfunded by the federal government. Hispanic-serving institutions, which number more than five times as many across the U.S. as the approximately 100 HBCUs, say their institutions have also been overlooked.
For Latino education groups, leveraging their growing representation is part of the politics.
The head of the Education Department is Latino, and the latest census data has removed any doubt about the potential clout of the community. The way House Democrats wrote the multitrillion-dollar reconciliation measure — which would require minority-serving institutions to compete for billions of dollars — has also mobilized Latino higher education advocates. They are wielding influence in Congress — even at the risk of alienating HBCU advocates who are better known on Capitol Hill.
“It’s a resource question,” said Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz), a co-chair of the Congressional Hispanic-Serving Institutions Caucus, who supports adding more money to the grants, though Democrats are looking to pare down the size of the bill. “We should not be getting into robbing Peter to pay Paul, or fighting over an amount that doesn't satisfy the needs of respective groups of people.”
He cautions that a competition for resources could create strife between education advocates who could benefit from allyship.
“It’s difficult only because I don't want to add to a division that is unnecessary right now,” he said while noting Democrats are still trying to get their struggling bill over the finish line. “As communities of color, it's best to be as unified as possible going forward.”
Advocates for Latino students have rallied throughout the summer and fall to make sure Latino students aren’t shortchanged in what the Biden administration has billed as a once-in-a-generation investment.
Undocumented students could get access to federal financial aid through the social spending package. Resource-poor HSIs and other minority-serving institutions would be allotted billions in grant funding for research and development. And Biden’s push for free community college could make higher education more affordable for their students, as 52 percent of Hispanic undergraduates attend these institutions.
But some Latino education groups also want federal dollars for Latino students in K-12 classrooms or migrant students, making it harder for lawmakers to focus on the one subject Latino student advocates find most pressing: College.
“We have so many areas of interest and focus, it's really been more of a challenge to figure out how we consolidate that power base around an agenda that addresses the pathway in the pipeline and Latinos in higher education,” Deborah Santiago, CEO of Excelencia in Education, an organization that advocates for Latino college students, said in an interview.
What the groups want
Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) launched the Senate’s first caucus devoted to Hispanic-serving institutions last month, just days after the Biden administration launched a new initiative devoted to Hispanic academic achievement. And with Donald Trump out of the White House, many Latino education advocates and their allies in Congress say they are pressing whatever advantage they can with the Biden administration after four years of pent up frustration.
“We have an opportunity here not only to advocate, but also to help design what goes forward,” Grijalva said of the Biden administration. “It's not just having a seat at the table. It is having the resources to do something with that seat.”
Despite the sweeping education programs already outlined in the Democrats’ reconciliation bill on free community college and universal pre-K, groups representing Hispanic students want more and representatives for Hispanic-serving institutions are among the most vocal in the halls of Congress.
“We have known all along that HSIs have always historically been underfunded and have been neglected by Congress and the administration, regardless of party or who is in control,” Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities President Antonio Flores said in an interview. “We as an association have been pushing for change to make sure that they are treated equitably and fairly.”

Progressives have a visceral hatred for America, its Judeo-Christian values, its free market system, its freedoms, opportunities, and material comforts. They want to change it fundamentally -- or destroy it. Our founding documents guarantee the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” with a functioning, limited government that serves the people. But such a milieu of healthy competition is an anathema to the Left, which thinks it offensive that Americans are free to work hard and pursue their dreams with minimal government intervention. Instead of letting such a meritocracy prevail and deliver the best to the nation, the Left wants to impose a system that obsesses over race, gender, sexuality, and perceived inequities associated with these identities. Leftists seek proportional quotas to reward targeted minorities for arbitrary criteria of identity and dismiss effort and talent as “privilege.”
This dumbing down of America in the service of equity is occurring everywhere -- in schools, universities, the workplace, and beyond. Paramount to this effort is the idea of diversity uber alles trumping merit, competence, or exceptional effort. This tyranny doesn’t spare members of minority groups who, out of experience and conviction, may believe in rising through merit and effort: deemed “unwoke,” they are reclassified as “multiracial white.” This misguided ideology peremptorily negates the multifarious influences that shape each individual’s unique perspective; it assumes a person is branded for life with the stereotypical characteristics of a particular race, gender, or sexual identity. Thus, the Left denies the heterogeneity of individuals and the influences on them even as it clamors for diversity.  It prejudicially assumes and demands ideological uniformity.
Here’s how the Left’s nefarious design is playing out. Schools and universities are forcing Leftist diversity standards on students, parents, and faculty at the expense of excellence. At the nation’s top high schools, the most represented race (by a significant margin) is Asian, followed by whites.  Blacks and Hispanics are underrepresented. But is this evidence of racism? No, for it turns out that the admissions process at these institutions is blind to gender and ethnicity and based solely on the highest grades and test scores. In fact, these schools are forbidden to consider race and income as acceptance criteria. Attempts to coach black and Hispanic applicants for the admission tests and encourage more of them to apply have been unsuccessful in improving their representation in the student body. So the question is: Should academic standards be sacrificed, hard work penalized, and meritocracy substituted for mediocrity in order to achieve diversity?
To give minority students a leg up, San Diego, America’s second largest school district with about 106,000 students, has dispensed with grading. The policy was apparently launched to “combat racism.” Since more minority students than white students have failed, grades will no longer depend on class participation or annual average. Deadlines to submit assignments will be suspended.  Surely, minority students’ failure to measure up to standards cannot be blamed primarily on racism in the educational system. Besides, by abolishing grades and not holding students responsible for their performance, excellence is stifled.
A 2009 Princeton study showed that to be admitted to top universities, Asian students had to score 140 points more than whites; 270 points more than Hispanics; and 450 points more than blacks.  After Harvard University instituted a quota for Asian-American admissions, a lawsuit was filed by Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA), a nonprofit that seeks to eliminate the use of race in college admission. Last November, an appeals court upheld a lower court’s decision against SFFA, clearing the college of racial discrimination charges. In February, SFFA petitioned the Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari on the same issue. Hopefully, the Supreme Court will let meritocracy prevail, ignoring the Leftists’ credo of equality of outcome for groups they deem victims.
Most Americans believe that diversity should not be attained at the expense of merit. A 2019 Pew Research Center report on race found 75% of respondents believed that employers should only consider a candidate’s qualifications -- even if the result is less diversity. Despite this, the diversity delusion -- that “diversity is our strength” -- is omnipresent in the corporate world and in government. Even vital domains like defense, political appointments, and air traffic control haven’t been spared.
After the Congressional Black Caucus demanded a black secretary of defense, the Biden administration selected retired General Lloyd Austin for the position. This necessitated waiving the requirement that a nominee be out of active duty for at least seven years. Critics faulted the appointment on three grounds.  While at Centcom, Austin had downplayed intelligence on the rise of ISIS and was responsible for a less-than-stellar outcome in the Syrian civil war.  Additionally, they felt he lacked knowledge and experience of the rising China-Russia threat. In the end, Austin’s skin color won out and was a major determinant in his securing the position. More identity drama followed.  Feminist groups were upset at his nomination and lobbied for a female secretary of defense. Their dissent centered on identity politics rather than a candidate’s ability to handle military threats.
Yet another example of the pernicious pursuit of diversity is under way in California. After Kamala Harris vacated her position as senator, California governor Gavin Newsom gratuitously affirmed his plans not to name a white man to the seat. Although an election would be the fairest way to choose the best among qualified candidates, activist groups have been lobbying Newsom to appoint a black woman, a Latino, or a member of the LGBTQ community.  Rather than California’s real concerns -- like skyrocketing homelessness and the highest tax rates in the country -- Harris’s replacement will be decided by the irrelevant ‘optics’ of race, gender, and sexual preference.
The sidelining of merit and competence is already endangering lives in the air nationwide. In 2015, the Obama administration ordered changes to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) rigorous, longstanding admission standards for air traffic controllers. This was solely in the interest of raising minority representation after the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees complained that the workforce was “too white.” The new standards gave preference to those who were unemployed and those who fared poorly in high school science over licensed pilots and those with post-high school ATC training. Racial parity won over public safety.
Corporate America, too, is in the grip of the diversity delusion. NASDAQ has proposed that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) mandate new securities listing criteria, requiring that corporate boards have at least two members representing diversity: either a woman and a member of a minority group, or a woman and someone from the LGBTQ community. The objective is “inclusive growth and prosperity to power stronger economies.” NASDAQ makes the fallacious, risible claim of a correlation between diversity and better company performance. But if diversity per se were good for business, mandating it would be unnecessary, corporations would have embraced race and gender parity long ago.
Former President Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ ideology focused on strengthening the economy with pro-American, pro-business, and free market policies. But the new administration is influenced by the Left’s “woke” policies and kowtows to its diversity quotas, which seek to impose burdensome requirements that militate against effort and excellence.
From a meritocracy, America is declining into mediocrity.
