Argentina's Milei invites Brazil's Lula to inauguration, travels to US
Tumblr media
Argentine President-elect Javier Milei on Sunday invited Brazil's leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to his Dec. 10 inauguration and praised their countries' ties, again softening his tone with a figure he had harshly criticized before.
Milei said in a letter to Lula, which he reposted on social media X, that he wishes to keep sharing "complementary areas" with the neighboring country so both can achieve "growth and prosperity," citing their trade and global footprints.
The letter marks yet another shift from the radical libertarian, who during his campaign dubbed Lula an "angry communist" and suggested he would balk at doing business with Brazil, Argentina's top trade partner.
Last week Milei, who travels to the United States on Sunday, had already softened his tone with China's communist leadership, thanking President Xi Jinping for a letter congratulating him. China is Argentina's second-largest trade partner.

Far-right outsider Javier Milei wins Argentina’s presidency
Javier Milei has won Argentina’s presidential elections in provisional results, wrenching his country to the right with a bombastic anti-establishment campaign that drew comparisons to that of former US President Donald Trump – all against the backdrop of one of the world’s highest inflation rates.
His rival Sergio Massa conceded the run-off vote on Sunday evening in a brief speech even before official results were announced. “Milei is the president elected for the next 4 years,” said Massa, adding that he had already called Milei to congratulate him.
...
Milei’s victory marks an extraordinary rise for the former TV pundit, who entered the race as a political outsider on a promise to “break up with the status quo” – exemplified by Sergio Massa.
His campaign promise to dollarize Argentina, if enacted, is expected to thrust the country into new territory: no country of Argentina’s size has previously turned over the reins of its own monetary policy to Washington decisionmakers.
Milei, a social conservative with ties to the American right, opposes abortion rights and has called climate change a “lie of socialism.” He has promised to slash government spending by closing Argentina’s ministries of culture, education, and diversity, and by eliminating public subsidies.
“Make Argentina great again!” Trump posted on his platform Truth Social Sunday, in reaction to Milei’s win. “I am very proud of you,” he wrote.
Similarities to Trump have not gone unnoticed in the United States as it prepares for its own presidential elections. Milei succeeded in attracting attention at home not only because of his political style – including wielding chainsaws and raging outbursts – but also because of the novelty of his positions and eagerness to upset the status quo.
Echoing the Trumpian slogan, ‘Drain the swamp’, Milei’s supporters shout “¡¡Qué se vayan todos!!” which translates as “May they all leave!” – an expression of fury at politicians from both sides of the spectrum. Argentina’s left is currently in government, following rule by the right from 2015 to 2019.
Outside of his controversial plan for dollarization, Milei’s political program includes slashing regulations on gun control and transferring authority over the penitentiary system from civilians to the military; both measures part of a tough-on-crime approach. He proposes using public funds to support families who choose to educate their children privately and even privatizing the health sector, which in Argentina has always been in public hands.
Several outspoken comments landed Milei in hot water, without deterring his most ardent supporters. He triggered an uproar when it appeared Milei was in favor of opening a market for organ transplants, although he later retracted his declarations. He was similarly forced to apologize after calling Pope Francis, who is from Argentina and is seen as an icon of progressive politics in South America, “an envoy of Satan” in 2017.

Venezuela’s Maduro declared winner of presidential election
The incumbent president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, won 51.2 per cent of the vote after 80 per cent of the protocols were processed. This will be the third six-year term for the president in office, Venezuelan media reported.
Authorities said opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez had 44 per cent of the vote, although the opposition earlier said it had “reasons to celebrate” and asked supporters to keep watching the vote count.
Venezuela’s foreign ministry accused nine Latin American countries of conducting an “operation to interfere in the electoral process.” According to the ministry’s press release, the governments of Argentina, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay are “trying to distort the peaceful expression of the will.”
This will be the third presidential term for Nicolas Maduro. He first took office as president on April 19, 2013. Argentine President Javier Milei has already said he will not recognise Mr Maduro’s victory. Meanwhile, Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez congratulated the Venezuelan president on his re-election.
Mr. Maduro has been in office as president of the state since 2013. The inauguration of Venezuela’s chief executive will take place on January 10, 2025, and his term of office will be six years.

Arson attack on four lesbian women shocks Argentina
Tumblr media
A lesbian couple and a third lesbian roommate are dead and another woman remains in a critical condition after alleged arson attack.
On May 6, the four women were in a boarding house in Buenos Aires, Argentina when they were set alight after a man threw a Molotov cocktail into their room.
According to Human Rights Watch, Pamela Fabiana Cobas, 52, was severely burned and died almost immediately.
Her partner, Mercedes Roxana Figueroa, 52, died of organ failure two days later, with burns covering 90 percent of her body.
Andrea Amarante, 42, died in the hospital on May 12 while her partner Sofía Castro Riglos, 49, remains in a critical condition.
Police have arrested Justo Fernando Barrientos, 62, and have not announced a motive for the attack. However, he is believed to have also been a tenant at the boarding house.
On Monday, May 13, more than than 200 people demonstrated in front of Plaza Colombia in Buenos Aires.

Protestors were questioning the crime’s lack of media coverage and calling for hate crime charges to be filed against Barrientos.
“They were set on fire for being lesbians, they were set on fire for being poor lesbians. They were set on fire for being poor lesbians creating a community,” a Barracas Lesbian Assembly member said to demonstrators.
The spokesperson added that the crime was aggravated by the precarious housing conditions of the women. All four of them shared a room without a bathroom, for which they paid 50,000 pesos (about $84 AUD).
Anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric has ‘built a climate of discrimination’
According to the Associated Press, right-wing president Javier Milei has increased anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment in since his election in 2023.
Described as an “anarcho-capitalist,” Milei has attacked social justice movements and become a “global far-right icon,”.
A 2023 report from Buenos Aires’ LGBT ombudsman found that offensive speech by members of Milei’s political party, as well as on social media and in the streets, in the context of the 2023 presidential campaign “built a climate of segregation, rejection and discrimination; the most fertile ground for violence toward historically vulnerable groups.”
Since December, Milei has shut down Argentina’s Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity and banned the use of gender-inclusive language in government. He also closed the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism.
Human Rights Watch is calling on authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure proper medical care and housing for the surviving woman.
They added that government officials should cease and condemn rhetoric that stigmatises queer women and may contribute to a climate in which they are seen as deserving of violence.

Bolsonaro attending Milei's inauguration, not a word from Lula
Tumblr media
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Monday confirmed he would be attending Javier Milei's inauguration as President of Argentina in Buenos Aires on Dec. 10. The retired Army captain told Milei so during the telephone conversation when the Brazilian rightwing leader congratulated the Libertarian candidate on his win at Sunday's runoff.
“I just received a phone call from Javier Milei, in which I congratulated him on his victory and he invited me to his inauguration”, said Bolsonaro with a smile on his face. “Today Argentina means a lot to all of us who love democracy and breathe freedom,” he added.
“It would be a great honor for me if you would come for the inauguration on December 10, it would be a beautiful thing,” Milei told him.
Bolsonaro's son Eduardo, who has a good personal relationship with the Argentine leader, posted a screenshot showing him with his father and Milei during the call. “Excellent video call from @jairbolsonaro and the president-elect of Argentina @JMilei,” wrote Eduardo Bolsonaro on social media.

‘El Loco’ wins landslide victory in Argentina that experts say shows scale of frustration with Peronist status quo
Luminaries of the global far right are in raptures over Javier Milei’s thumping election victory in Argentina which experts predict will turn Buenos Aires into a new stomping ground for the populist radical right.
Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro led the merrymaking after their Argentinian ally trounced his rival, the Peronist finance minister Sergio Massa, by nearly 3 million votes in Sunday’s presidential election. The former US president predicted Milei would “truly make Argentina great again” while Brazil’s ex-president applauded a victory for “honesty, progress and freedom”.
Bolsonarista and Mileísta activists predicted Milei’s win would be the first in a trio of rightwing conquests that would see Trump and Bolsonaro reclaim power in 2024 and 2026.
In his first post-victory interview on Monday, Milei announced he would travel to the US and Israel – where he has promised to move Argentina’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – before being sworn in on 10 December, alongside his ultra-conservative vice-president elect Victoria Villarruel.
Bolsonaro announced he would attend Milei’s inauguration in Buenos Aires and posted footage of a pally video call with Argentina’s president-elect. “I’m really happy,” Bolsonaro told the radical libertarian economist. “You have a big job ahead of you … and it’s a job that goes beyond Argentina,” Brazil’s former leader added. “Gracias!” Milei replied.
Unlike Bolsonaro, a professional politician who posed as an anti-establishment outsider to win power in 2018, Milei is a genuine newcomer to the world of politics. Born in Buenos Aires in 1970, he played in a Rolling Stones cover band and found fame as a foul-mouthed economic pundit on Argentinian television before being elected to congress in 2021 for his libertarian party Libertad Avanza (Freedom Advances). Milei’s mercurial personality, expletive-ridden onscreen outbursts and Britpop-style hairdo have cemented his reputation as ‘El Loco’ (The Madman).
From Bogotá and Santiago to Lisbon and Madrid, other ultra-conservative figures voiced delight at Milei’s landslide victory over the centrist Massa, by 14.47m to 11.51m votes.
André Ventura, the leader of Portugal’s far-right Chega! (Enough!), celebrated Milei’s “struggle to defend society” and Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy’s far-right League, sent his congratulations. Santiago Abascal, the leader of Spain’s far-right party Vox, said Milei had opened “a path of future and hope … for Argentines and all of Latin America”.
Hungary’s president Katalin Novák congratulated Milei on a “great victory”.In South America, the Chilean ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast congratulated Milei for his “resounding triumph”, writing: “The reconstruction of Argentina starts now”.
The Colombian senator María Fernanda Cabal called Milei’s victory a victory for “sanity, common sense [and] the hope of a rebirth for Argentina”. “Once again Latin America’s depredating left has been defeated.”

Argentina’s President-elect Javier Milei softens rhetoric, seeks to strengthen ties with Brazil
Tumblr media
In the weeks following his victory in Argentina’s presidential elections, Libertarian Javier Milei has softened his bellicose criticism of Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and seems to be moving toward more traditional diplomacy between the neighbouring countries.
During his campaign, Milei called Lula a thief, an ex-convict, and a communist. Days after he was elected, he had invited Lula to attend his inauguration on December 10.
The invitation reportedly came during a visit by Diana Mondino — who is tipped to be Milei’s foreign minister — to Brazil, where she visited Brazilian Chancellor Celso Amorim. The invitation came as a surprise because just days earlier Mondino told Russian news agency RIA Novosti that Argentina would “stop interacting with the governments of Brazil and China.”
Of course, Milei also famously invited former President Jair Bolsonaro to attend his inauguration, and Bolsonaro — an ideological ally — was among the first to congratulate the incoming president.
It’s not clear whether Lula will attend Milei’s inauguration, but some analysts predict that another high-ranking government official — possibly Vice President Geraldo Alckmin — would go in his place.

Brazil's Lula wishes luck and success to new Argentine president
Tumblr media
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva extended best wishes to the newly elected government in Argentina, without making direct mention of President-elect Javier Milei, who has previously criticized Lula and labeled him an "angry communist."
"I wish good luck and success to the new government. Argentina is a great country and deserves all our respect. Brazil will always be available to work together with our Argentine brothers," he wrote on Sunday on X, formerly Twitter.
Lula said that democracy is the voice of the people and "it must always be respected," congratulating the institutions and the Argentine people for the "orderly and peaceful" process.
On Tuesday, leftist Lula had said that Argentina, the country's third-largest trading partner, should choose a president who supports democracy and the Mercosur trading bloc.

Bolsonaro wishes Milei good luck for PASO elections
Tumblr media
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Thursday released a video wishing Libertarian presidential candidate Javier Milei good luck for next Sunday's Simultaneous, Open, and Mandatory Primary (PASO) elections in Argentina.
“Hello Dear Javier Milei, Bolsonaro here. We have many things in common, to begin with, we want the good for our countries. I wish you good luck there in Argentina and God willing I will go to visit you as soon as possible,” said the retired Army captain in video footage posted on social platforms.
Bolsonaro added that both he and Milei stood for “family, private property, free market, freedom of expression and the legitimate right to defense.”
“We want to be great at the height of our territory and our population. Congratulations to all our Argentine brothers and sisters,” Bolsonaro also pointed out in the message Milei relayed on social networks.

Milei not expected to disrupt business between Argentina and Brazil
Tumblr media
Political tensions between major trade partners Brazil and Argentina are set to grow after Javier Milei, a right-wing libertarian, won Sunday’s presidential election, but business will be less affected.
Milei had previously lashed out at Brazil's leftist leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who in turn managed to congratulate Argentina's president-elect in a tweet without mentioning his name.
"The relations between Brazil and Argentina have a long history, both in terms of trade and investment. The fact that we have presidents with antagonistic political views will make the political relationship between countries cold, but little will change in business relations," Welber Barral, founding partner of BMJ Consultores Associados and former Brazilian foreign trade secretary, told BNamericas.
Argentina is Brazil's third largest trade partner after China and the US.
"If we think pragmatically, the fact that Milei is in favor of economic liberalism can help fuel trade and business between the two countries, even with the political differences between the now elected president of Argentina and the current president of Brazil," he added.
