YES. concetta as main save it all
Period drama lovers, give The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) mini series on Netflix a chance. I found it to be a pretty decent modern adaptation of the book/film and the visuals are stunning. (They did a disastrous job with the accents, but if you don't speak Italian you won't notice that.)

The thing that hooked me and saved the series for me was how they made Concetta basically the main character– Concetta who disappears in the book and who was reduced to mere wallpaper by Visconti, who made only Angelica shine.
This series instead presents a powerful portrayal of an eldest daughter whose dreams are shattered by ambitious men and who bears the weight of her family's burdens and decline with grace. Despite the heartbreak and the tragedies, she emerges as the winner, where Angelica is the loser (as Angelica herself tells her). I really loved this narrative choice.

Series Review: The Leopard on Netflix
Brief history of Sicily As I was planning a visit to Sicily, I decided to learn a little about Sicily’s history prior to my visit and watch the film that is a period drama and shares a bit about its history. Sicily has a diverse and rich history. In late 11th century Sicily was briefly under the Normans and that was a period of prosperity when many palaces were built. A century later, in 1194,…

He had asked Tancredi, before that first visit, before Don Fabrizio had even thought of coming to their camp in the city, what manner of man his uncle was. “Well, that’s easy!” Tancredi had said, his laughter a bluster to cover the fact that he’d never before been asked the question. “He is The Leopard, the prince of Salina, and conducts himself accordingly. There is no one else like him in the world.”
He should have known then what would have awaited him at each of their other meetings - the royal bearing, the haughty eye, the absolute certainty with with the man stood and stared and spoke. Don Fabrizio moved in a world where he had never had to explain himself, or be explained - he was known to all, untouchable and unmoveable, and no man had ever before questioned him, or denied him what he desired. What he had desired then was to go to Donnafugata, as the family had done since Donnafugata had existed to be visited, and this no-name northerner of no account was standing in his way.
And he, Lorenzo Bombello, had been a fool and showed his hand a little too quickly then, and let his eyes linger a little too long on something the Prince could deny him - on Concetta Corbera, his daughter.

The Leopard [Il Gattopardo] (1963)
Tumblr media
The politics of the world of The Leopard are incredibly dense. The Risorgimento was never touched on in any great depth in any of my history classes growing up, and I was far, FAR too distracted by a dog digging a hole in the back of frame during one of the main conversations between Don Fabrizio Corbera and his hunting buddy laying out the state of the aristocracy to pay it much heed. And this is in many ways incredibly specific: at first Giuseppe Garibaldi is an important revolutionary figure, and then he’s totally irrelevant. Corrupt votes for unification are played with exactly the inept and halting fanfare that the whole affair seems to deserve. But fortunately, at the core of his film, director Luchino Visconti manages to find something more universal if not existential to ponder. The two central figures of Fabrizio and Tancredi present a sort of rift between generations which happens again and again. Fabrizio views himself as a relic of the past, unable to adapt to a new system, but recognizing that change is inevitable. He’s not resentful of this, stating at one point that unification “isn’t the end of anything, it’s the beginning of everything.” But still, he knows this isn’t his world. His nephew Tancredi couldn’t be more different: he’s a mutable, even puckish figure much more adept to the volatile politics of the time. There’s an almost insincerity to him, in a sense. He joins in with Garibaldi’s volunteers to sack Palermo, but then demands a roadway blocked by those same insurgents be cleared due to his ancestral rights and privileges. He claims to have been injured in the fight as a way to earn a track record, but treats his injury so insincerely as to wear an eyepatch more as a fashion statement than something borne out of medical necessity. It’s all about appearances. These men find counterparts in Angelica and Concetta. Much to Concetta’s horror, Tancredi courts Angelica with a coarse war story of almost pillaging a convent, reducing her to laughter which clears an entire dinner party. And just as Tancredi can navigate the political sphere, Angelica seems to find myriad ways to play into Fabrizio’s favor while needling Concetta. Concetta is of Sicily, one of those who has formed a crust resistant to change that Fabrizio speaks of, while Angelica, like Tancredi, is more changeable. Progress is inevitable, but there is also a sense of loss to it. As the film draws near its close, the final ball sequence becomes more of a meta-meditation on existence itself. Fabrizio looks around at a world fundamentally changed. He’s unable to withdraw due to his own rigid sense of politeness, and even finds a way to recapture past joy by dancing with that force of nature that is Angelica. But this is no longer his cultural more. He is the elder millennial staring aghast at Zoomers and their TikTok challenges and wondering what everything has come to. Perhaps death is a favorable alternative to that. As he walks home, he enters a dark alleyway, receding into the past and not blocking the way for others in their progress.
