From a WaPo article, quoted on Spoutible:
Lol, they say this like it's a bad thing.
"Oh, a President who actually reads their briefings, knows what they're talking about, and doesn't just get lead around by the nose by their handlers? Heaven forbid!"
If she was a man, nobody would attack her for this.

One of Rincewind's tutors had said of him that "to call his understanding of magical theory abysmal is to leave no suitable word to describe his grasp of its practice." This had always puzzled him. He objected to the fact that you had to be good at magic to be a wizard. He knew he was a wizard, deep in his head. Being good at magic didn't have anything to do with it. That was just an extra, it didn't actually define someone.

Hello! Can you please give some information about a defiant patient? For example if a patient has refused to eat, refuses and IV, refuses, refuses, yet needs help without exception, what can/does a hospital do?
So.
There are a couple scenarios your character might fit into.
Scenario 1: if your character is an adult and has the mental capacity and legal competency to make their own decisions, they are allowed to refuse whatever they want.
If the patient is refusing everything, the nurse and then the doctor will talk with them and explain the risks if they continue to refuse. They may be offered alternatives or a second opinion, and they have the right to ask for one. If the patient continues to refuse, they may be offered the option to leave against medical advice. If they refuse this, but continue to refuse all care, they may be discharged against their will.
Scenario 2: if your character does not have the legal competency (say, a minor or someone who is severely intellectually disabled and has a guardian), they can be forced into care.
In this situation, someone else (a parent or guardian) has made the decision for the person to receive care, and the hospital staff are carrying out those wishes. Hopefully the patient goes along with it, but if they don't, it is ultimately up to the decision maker, and the patient can be forced to receive that care.
Scenario 3: If your character has legal competency (they are an adult and make their own decisions in day-to-day life), but, say, they lack capacity temporarily (for example, they have taken a substance that impairs their ability to make decisions, or they are unconscious or severely confused due to an illness or injury), consent is typically implied (i.e. the understanding is that if this person were in their right mind, they would want a medical professional to figure out what was wrong with them and treat them). In this case, they may be forced into care.
An example of this is a head injury, in which many people are combative and may refuse care. However, the refusals are due to the disease process, and a doctor can assess whether they have intact decision-making or not. If they determine that the person's decision-making capacity is not intact, they can force them into care. If the person's decision making is still intact, forcing them into care could constitute assault, battery, or false imprisonment, depending on what was done (see scenario 1).

So I’m thinking about Jake and his competency… and I think what really gets me about it is that he’s known as the tech guy. And yes, we’ve established that he’s so capable of more than that, but I think what makes it hit extra hard is the fact that Jake’s athleticism and ability to gauge battle situations well, in addition to being highly adaptable and flexible, comes as a surprise. So often, being socially awkward, or smart like he is, is mutually exclusive to these athletic and strategic abilities. But he proves this stereotype wrong. He’s just an exceptionally well-rounded and hard worker. Thoughts?

Why Senior Managers Should Have Subject Competencies
I have spent many years reporting to people who lack expertise in what I do, which works if they are reasonable and trust me to do my work. After all no one knows everything, that is why they hire and delegate to others.
However, if they are unreasonable then it becomes hard to do serious work.
The CEO of a cybersecurity company should have deep knowledge of cybersecurity and tech. He doesn't need to be up to date or at the cutting edge as he will be spending more time at a strategic level making business decisions but he needs at least intermediate level of knowledge so he can make the right decisions and strategies.
George is an accountant, not a tech person, who understands codes, systems, architecture, etc well.
Being competent is important! Much more important than working long hours, etc. A good software engineer can solve in an hour what a lousier engineer takes weeks to think through.

thinking about how kind of crazy it is that the last labour government spread 13 years of power across only 2 prime ministers whereas the last tory one spread 14 across 5

You can find plenty of examples of doctors who are brilliant at medicine but have a lousy "bedside manner" — it's a well-worn character archetype in fiction — but you never really see the reverse (and for good reason). When was the last time you heard something like 'oh, he's a terrible surgeon — kills more of his patients than he saves — but damned if he doesn't have a great bedside manner; the hospital keeps him around because he's just so darn likable'?

Challenge #03807-J155: A Test of Mettle
The soldiers were tired, cranky, and sore. They looked at the young upstart who'd marched them far from where they thought they needed to go. The person wasn't what they wanted in a leader, but they quickly learned, the person was what they had NEEDED as one. -- Anon Guest
Of all the fates that an army could ever despise, it was being under the command of an untried, untested Noble with no knowledge of the battlefield. The stripling prince was barely old enough to shave his entire face. Only the fact that he was one of the realm's prized Demon Lords stopped the entire population of soldiers from quitting on the spot.
That said, they knew their objective. What General Mokesk couldn't understand was how the seventeen-year-old Prince Benevolence thought he was doing any good by going around the other side of the mountains.
On the plus side, there was good forage and decent places to camp on the way. On the other hand, they were going the wrong way. If it wasn't for the Prince sleeping in the same kinds of tents as them, or making certain they were all well fed, they would have rebelled some weeks ago.

this manatee looks like it’s in a skyrim loading screen
#lol good luck finding all of the photoshopped versions in the rb history. ‘manatee restored’ is still my favorite of all time#misc#I encourage anyone dyslexic to try rotating him in your mind. I can’t do that; which is why I’m asking you to.#also: a bunch of tags are surprised this isn’t ‘shopped#it’s the lighting. backlit by the sun (which is diffused through the water) but also forelit artificially#the artificial light - a flash pack or something - casts a hard shadow under the creatures arm#which normally wouldn’t be possible if backlit by the SUN; you’d see a less-hard/more-fragmented shadow above water#as light sources ‘compete’ in a sense - and since there aren’t any light sources which can outshine the literal sun#it looks a bit weird when the darkest shadow is being cast from any other origin point - which is what’s essentially happening here#I don’t know the mechanics of how light travels through water; but I know the effect is substantial even with relatively short distances#also: it’s been balanced and color corrected by the author of the photo - who made deliberate choices to bring out the full potential#so it’s not like it’s a fresh and untouched export#but the kind of ‘tacked on’ appearance of the creature is a result of the lighting conditions within the image
