Been thinking about Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and what makes Death the Wolf such an effective villain, and like… character design and voice acting is certainly doing a lot there, don't get me wrong, but I think there's something else at play.
Death is the most terrifying character in Puss in Boots, because he's the only one playing the genre straight.
The premise of the Shrek films has always been that they're normal, modern people living in wacky fairytale land.
The evil king uses his magic mirror as a dating app. The fairy godmother uses business cards to contact her clients. Her workers consider unionising over their lack of dental plan.
Puss in Boots 1 kinda broke the mould in that— while there are plenty of modern elements to how the characters act and how their world works— it's more specifically intended to be characters from the world Zorro living in wacky fairytale land. But the point still stands.
The aim of the Shrek films and spin-offs is to subvert common fairytale tropes for comedic effect. What if the princess fell for the ogre? What if Prince Charming was an entitled dick? What if Goldilocks teamed up with the three bears and started a crime family?
But Death? Death, for the most part, isn't playing that game.
No character questions why he doesn't just kill Puss outright. There are no gags about him being inconvenienced by Jack Horner losing so many men. Nobody makes any self-aware fourth wall breaking jokes about why he bothers with the whole whistling thing.
We all know why he does the whistling thing. It's the same reason why Little Red Riding Hood has to go through the whole "what big eyes/ears/teeth you have, Grandma" rigamarole. The same reason why the wolf takes care to knock before blowing the little pigs' houses down.
The Wolf is scary because he's the only actual fairytale creature in this entire setting. He's not bound by rules of logic or common sense, or his own will, he's bound by the narrative.
And that's also why he backs down at the end.
The first time he and Puss fight, in the bar, Puss is arrogant. The second time, in the Cave, Puss is scared out of his wits. It's the third time, on the wishing star, that Puss learns his lesson. Of course the Wolf backs down after that! The rules say he has to.
But, on another level, there is also the issue of Puss realising that he wants more from his life than just to be a legend.
They say "legends never die", but the most famous part of any given legend tends to be the story of how the hero finally bites the dust.
And "he was such a great fighter that Death himself had to kill him off, personally!" is just the sort of ending that would fit the legend Puss has constructed around himself. In a sense, the Wolf is giving Puss exactly what he proclaims to want— the chance to go down in history.
Puss realising he doesn't want that anymore is the catalyst for sending the Wolf away. Through his own egotistical and reckless attitude, he turned himself into a story and thus summoned a narrative device. Only by choosing to value his life over the legend is he able to escape that trap.
The Wolf's defeat is both the natural ending of the story that he and Puss have been playing out since the film began, and a rejection of the natural ending to the story Puss has been telling about himself since he first became the hero of San Ricardo.

Unhoused Solidarity In Action
This is a non-exhaustive list of resources you might have access to, or know of, that can be used to aid unhoused community members directly. Many of these focus on direct mutual aid as individuals but can be helpful to consider when in community organizing settings. - What do you (or someone you know) have access to, that you can provide to the community? - Can they be accessed, used, or provided: regularly, occasionally, only in emergencies, weekly, daily, sporadically, consistently, etc.? - Consider seasonal needs (winter coats don’t help us when it’s 90 degrees out!) - Remember to practice active, informed consent with individuals and ask if these would be helpful! Don’t take it personally if your offer isn’t helpful to someone, it might help someone else. - These should be realistic and not compromise your safety or well-being. Remember to prioritize safety over comfort.
Housing
- Consider your relationship with this person (generally, don’t offer complete strangers into your home)
- Location matters a lot. Unhoused people often need to be near “hubs”/cities, close to resources and systems of care.
- Some people can’t live in hotels, couch surf, or any of these options without losing their housing vouchers, and in some cases health insurance or other assistance programs. Legal definitions of homelessness (used by voucher programs) usually don’t include people living in hotels/motels, or couch surfing (including most of these options). Check with the individual to see if this might be helpful.
Extra bedrooms
Campers, trailers
Couches
Apartments
Land/yards to camp on, park at, etc.
Donate funds or points for a hotel room
Shelters
Floor space
Safe parking lots to sleep in your car in (sleeping in your car is considered legal homelessness in most places)
Time
- Emotional capacity and minimizing the risk of burnout are important here especially
Do outreach with a community org
File for grants
Provide education materials
Share knowledge regarding resources
Emotional support - build genuine connections with your local unhoused neighbors
Reach out to companies for donations
Create or add to lists of resources, open bathrooms, etc.
Transportation
- One of the biggest barriers to accessing existing resources is transportation (also mailing addresses, internet access, and active phone service)
Personal car, ride-sharing/carpooling
Bus tickets/passes
Old/not frequently used bikes
Taxi services/vouchers
Uber/Lift gift cards
Carpooling
Coordinate rides for people
Food
- A lot of unhoused people prefer “comfort foods” to “health foods” - Ask about dietary restrictions, the cooking ability of the unhoused person, the cooking equipment, etc. - Soft foods are frequently more accessible to us as dental issues are very common - 100$ in fast food is significantly less than 100$ in homemade food
Can cook hot meals
Can pay for meals
Knows someone (person, business) who can supply food
Inviting people over for a meal
Gifting food (be sure to be considerate of dietary restrictions, cooking ability, equipment needed to cook, etc.)
Have a community dunkin gift card
Make or add to a fruit tree map (fallingfruit.org, community gardens, federal university campuses)
Money
- Money should be freely given, with no strings attached - Ask what form works best for them— cash apps/virtual, physical cash, gift cards, quarters, etc.
It is best to provide cash donations directly to impacted individuals (or organizations) with no strings attached
Provide relevant, local chain store gift cards (Grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants)
Coordinate fundraisers
Apply for grants
Supplies
- Ask individuals what they need most!
Purchase and donate supplies directly to individuals or organizations
Reach out to businesses
Donate old phones or computers
Add someone to your family phone plan
Donate professional clothes for interviews
Donate an outfit you would actually wear
Talents, Trades, Skills
Your hobbies might be helpful! Crochet is extremely trendy right now (easy to learn, you could make hats/scarves for community members)!
Professional ties/experience Examples: You’re a cosmetologist who can do free haircuts for an hour each week, or you’re a graphic designer who can create a website for an organization for free, or you’re a nurse who can provide wound care to encampments
Community gardens
Connect with and partner with non-profits or community-based organizations in your area (or help start one if there’s none!)
Allow people to use you as a reference for job interviews
Bathrooms
- Not just toilets, but showers and mirrors are important too
Ask businesses to pledge to have open, public, accessible, and free restrooms
Your personal restroom
Make a list of local public restrooms
Free gym memberships or add someone to a gym plan
Services
- In order to access most services, you need most, if not all, of the following: transportation, identification, important paperwork, printing/faxing access, mailing addresses, internet access, active phone service, free time during business hours, and emotional and mental ability (and capacity) to complete everything required (forms, applications, phone calls, interviews, annual reviews, verifications) in a timely manner (usually on a strict deadline)
Case management experience you can volunteer
Peer support for service navigation (great option for people with prior lived experience)
Advocacy within services
Offer to provide a P.O. box or use your address to receive mail
Housing skills
Allow someone to use your library card for books, computers, the internet, etc. (most libraries won’t allow unhoused people to get a library card)
Volunteer at a shelter
Allow someone to use your home wifi, printer, phone number, mailbox, email, etc.
Fundraising
- If you can’t donate your own personal funds, fundraising is a great way to help out
Community mutual aid asks (in person or online)
Art walks
Skate competition
Concerts
Tip jar
Gift basket raffle
Clothing and food drive
Game tourney
Live streams
Start a GoFundMe for individuals/orgs
I strongly encourage you to look over the matching slides I created for this workshop: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1VDngImsMByUFmKX611zAJ43a0UcYIfMBxrbh_g1IJvc/edit
As a disclaimer: I have been homeless/unhoused for over half of my life. My experiences of homelessness have included while being a infant, toddler, young child, preteen, teenager, and young adult. I am 24 years old. My most recent experience of being unhoused was last year, and I am currently precariously housed (meaning: at high risk of losing housing again). My experiences of homelessness have included sleeping outside in a tent, sleeping on park benches and under freeways, walking around all night to avoid hypothermia and freezing to death (something that has happened to several of my friends), couch surfing, sleeping in cars, squatting, sleeping in motels, living in a shelter, and institutionalized. I have been homeless with family a few times during early childhood and again when I was 15. All of my other experiences of homelessness have been on my own starting at age 9 or 10, and the last time I lived with a parent I was 16. I have been homeless in both rural and urban areas. I have been homeless in New England/Northeast United States as well as the Pacific Northwest.
In addition to this, I have many contributing factors to my experience, including being disabled, a person of color, trans, queer, a survivor of child abuse and CSA, being trafficked, and a drug user and a SWer, amongst other marginalized experiences.
That being said: my experience of being unhoused/homeless is not the universal experience. While I know many people of all different demographics who I’ve met on the streets, I cannot speak to every single person’s experiences. I especially cannot speak to experiences outside of the United States, aside from what I hear secondhand.
This is meant to serve as a general guide to accompany a workshop I created, and might not be helpful for everyone. If it’s not helpful, I hope it inspires others to offer creative solutions. I’m always working on expanding this list. Thank you for reading.

Boston Terriers
This is my dog Leela. She is a Boston terrier. Boston terriers are charming and affectionate companions known for their distinctive tuxedo-like coat and lively personality. Originating in the late 19th century in Boston, Massachusetts, these small but study dogs have become beloved pets worldwide. I love my dog. She makes me so happy. She brings joy to my life. She became my emotional support. Boston Terriers are a beloved breed known for their friendly demeanor and distinctive appearance. However, like all dog breeds, they require proper healthcare to thrive. This essay will discuss essential aspects of Boston Terrier healthcare, including routine veterinary visits, diet, exercise, and common health issues. A balanced diet is vital for a Boston Terrier's overall well-being. Owners should provide high-quality dog food formulated for their size and age.
Tumblr media
Additionally, freshwater should always be available. Consulting with a veterinarian can help determine the best dietary plan tailored to individual needs.
Tumblr media
Boston Terriers are known for their playful and intelligent nature. They are friendly, loyal, and good with children, making them excellent family pets. Their  sociable demeanor means they often get along well with other animals. They bond well with family members. They thrive on human interaction and love to cuddle. Regular veterinary visits are crucial for maintaining the health of Boston Terriers. These check-ups help prevent diseases, ensure vaccinations are up-to-date, and monitor any potential health issues. Given their predisposition to certain genetic conditions, routine examinations are particularly important.Vaccines for diseases like rabies, distemper, and kennel cough will be administered as per the vaccination schedule. After a veterinarian visit, it's important to follow any recommendations provided, such as administering medications or adjusting diet. Keeping a record of health concerns and changes in behavior can also aid in future visits.
Tumblr media
Boston Terriers are relatively easy to train due to their eagerness to please. Regular exercise, like daily walks and playtime, while they enjoy playtime, they are also content to relax indoors, is essential to keep them healthy and happy. They can adapt well to apartment living. I have 5 of them living with me in the apartment, but they do need mental stimulation.
Training , Boston terrier responds well to positive reinforcement techniques. Consistency and patience are key. Exercise needs, daily walks and play sessions are essential to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. They enjoy games like fetch and agility training.
Tumblr media
Health considerations, being  a brachycephalic breed, boston terriers can be prone to respiratory issues. Regular vet check ups and a watchful eye for signs of distress, especially in hot weather, are crucial. Common health issues include hip dysplasia and eye problems. Costs can vary widely depending on the condition being treated, ranging from $20 to several hundred dollars. Emergency Visits, Cost: $100 to $300 (or more) Emergency visits can be significantly more expensive, especially after hours. Medications and Treatments costs can vary widely depending on the condition being treated, ranging from $20 to several hundred dollars. Diagnostic Tests  Blood Tests: $75 to $200, Urinalysis: $20 to $50.  These tests help monitor health and detect issues early. Dental Care, Professional Cleaning: $300 to $800 Dental health is critical for Boston Terriers, and cleanings are often recommended annually. Preventive Care Flea and Tick Prevention: $15 to $60 per month heartworm Prevention: $10 to $30 per month.
Tumblr media
Grooming, Boston Terriers have low grooming needs, weekly  regular brushing helps reduce shedding, and occasional baths keep their coat clean. Be sure to check their ears and teeth for proper hygiene.
Tumblr media
Boston Terriers are delightful companions that bring joy and energy to any household. With the right care, training, and love, they make wonderful pets that enrich the lives of their owners. Whether you’re considering adding one to your family or just want to learn more, Boston Terriers are a breed worth exploring. Their affectionate nature and playful spirit ensure that they will be a cherished member of your family for years to come.

Bathing in a world on the edge of war, of monster gore and exploding plants that try to digest you in their fluids is a wild run. So, trust me when I say the Dungeon folk stank a certain amount from their switch over.
Shampoo, flora body soaps, hot water - were so rare and so foreign to them it took them at least a month to understand that they never had to save water on Earth. When given the graces of a bathroom, watching shower heads, bath tubs and wash clothes with hundreds of bottles of some form of bubbly liquid? Oh, how it was a miracle to get them to leave such rooms.
Zackery never stopped washing his hair, fingers at his scalp, scratching and itching and removing grime from eons of being cold water washed on the monthly escape to a lakeside. He brushed his teeth something fierce, to the point of bleeding but he couldn't care less for that. The only reason he didn't have dental issues was because Emon's magic!
Emon's never had anything touch his body in the form of water or gel, magic cleansing was a common thing for the Magic Tower folk, though they had money and resourced for water, it was often used for water magics at most. Collected for potion making, for practical things for the storage spaces of their endless walls of concoctions. So, to be graced with a bath-tub, holding the hand of Vega and sitting amongst his people in a large shared hot bath… Oh, he nearly cried at how nice it felt. Washing his hair, feeling water in his toes, his hands warmed through and the tension in his body melting away like ice in the sun.
Nishi' didn't need more water in his life, he was born in it with his kind, but it was nice to witness a world with waters in abundance. What he found more interesting, like Aaphrine, Earth had a lot of water holes, some places that no human could dive within. Sulfuric lakes, salt lakes, chemical lacking or even oxygen lacking lakes. Ah, those were the best for him, but cleaning is a ritual he takes seriously - his scales take a bloody long time to shine so he's rather impressed with body sponges and will collect a few for his travels.
Leo, Qiang, Yuriy and Xion, they were not so much accustomed to bathing. After all, they were a species that social groom. Tongues to fur, made for their pelts and make up of layers. It was more common to see these four in a corner, grooming each other with skinship of familial notions. Over and over, they'll clean each other, but on Earth - it felt different since they didn't need to use their tongues anymore. Earth had Shampoo! For Animals! It was a life changer, they still bathe together, a social need for their species since they were the only ones of this nature on Earth now. Yet, to dig fingers into thick fur, to brush out knots, to trim and have every part of their bodies fully groomed? Heavenly. They are the pinacol of supreme fluff and shiny fur.
Arius - doesn't have a body that needs cleaning. The Demonfolk, never dirty - bathing isn't something in their nature. Raphael & the Fallen Gods - are protected by divinity, dirty and the likes can not fall upon their being.

Common Dreams
Aug. 5, 2024
"The simple fact is: Whether you're running for the White House or a city council seat, if you stand with working people, they will stand with you," said Sen. Bernie Sanders.
A poll commissioned by Sen. Bernie Sanders shows that an overwhelming majority of voters in key battleground states support policy goals central to the progressive agenda, bolstering the case for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris to aggressively push for higher taxes on the rich and large corporations, a federal minimum wage increase, and an expansion of Medicare and Social Security.
"Good policy for working-class voters is also good politics," Sanders (I-Vt.) said in response to the survey's findings, which include replies from 1,158 likely U.S. voters in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
"It should come as no surprise that expanding Social Security, raising the minimum wage, and capping rent increases are very popular," the senator added. "The political class would do well to listen to the clear directive of American voters, and deliver. The simple fact is: Whether you're running for the White House or a city council seat, if you stand with working people, they will stand with you."
Conducted by Data for Progress, the poll shows that Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump are locked in a dead heat in the six battleground states with three months to go before the November 5 election. A slim majority of voters across the states examined feel that neither Democrats nor Republicans "have clear solutions for the biggest issues facing the country," suggesting there's a significant opportunity for either candidate to win over voters with a concrete policy agenda thatcenters the material needs of the working class.
The survey makes clear that progressive policy objectives have widespread appeal across the political spectrum. For example, the poll shows that 71% of voters in the battleground states—including 89% of Democrats, 67% of Independents and third-party voters, and 55% of Republicans—want the wealthy to pay more in taxes, a sentiment that aligns with progressive goals and contrasts with those of Trump and the GOP.
The poll also indicates broad support for raising taxes on big, profitable corporations; expanding Social Security by "making the wealthy pay the same rate as the working class"; hiking the long-stagnant federal minimum wage; and expanding Medicare to cover dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
Support for more ambitious progressive agenda items, such as Medicare for All, is less solid among Republicans and Independents, according to the new survey, but still has strong backing among the Democratic base—68% of which supports transitioning to a single-payer healthcare system.
Tumblr media
The new survey comes as Harris, who formally secured the Democratic nomination last week, is weighing her running mate pick ahead of a Tuesday rally in Philadelphia.
Progressives have openly warned Harris against selecting Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro—citing, among other concerns, his attacks on pro-Palestine demonstrators and support for school vouchers—and rallied behind Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Sanders himself, as Common Dreams reported over the weekend, praised Walz during an interview on Saturday, saying Minnesota's governor "understands the needs of working families" and would be well-positioned to "speak up and take on powerful corporate interests."
Calls for Harris to embrace a progressive agenda and choose a running mate prepared to fight for that program come amid concerns about the vice president's corporate ties and the Democratic Party's broader and longer-term failures to deliver for the working class, which is facing an increasingly dire housing crisis, slowing wage and job growth, and fears of a looming recession—all as billionaire wealth ascends to record heights.
"Progressives should insist that working people have a lot at stake in this election regardless of their skin color, nationality or ethnic heritage and that our shared class interest ought to be the basis for our political appeals," Dustin Guastella, research associate at the Center for Working-Class Politics, and The Nation president Bhaskar Sunkara wrote in an op-ed for The Guardian last week.
"The fact that this narrative—one the official Harris campaign seems at least slightly sympathetic to—was so quickly and enthusiastically overshadowed by an emphasis on identity politics says a lot about the Democratic Party's contemporary base," the pair wrote, pointing to the "White Women for Kamala" and "White Dudes for Harris" fundraising calls recently held in support of the Democratic nominee.
"The Democratic Party needs working-class voters more than ever, but unfortunately the party increasingly represents well-heeled white-collar professionals primarily concentrated in and around big cities," Guastella and Sunkara wrote. "It's these voters who crave appeals to identity over appeals to shared class grievances."
As Sanders said over the weekend, "The time is long overdue for Washington to stop worrying about the billionaires and their campaign contributors and start worrying about the needs of working families."

affenpinscher!!🐾
Tumblr media
the affenpinscher is a toy german dog breed of the pinscher type (group of dogs bred as ratters and guard dogs originally). theyre a confident, curious and playful breed that can be stubborn at times, but all in all theyre an affectionate and protective breed!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
history
although the exact history about affens is unclear, the most widely accepted story of how affenpinschers came to be was that a man from lubeck, germany, began breeding ratting terriers during the 1600s. although the early form of the affenpinscher chased mice in stables, they soon were bred to a smaller size, with the larger size having gone extinct (╥_╥), and brought into homes during the plague to kill kitchen mice.…ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ
in the 17th and 18th century, a breed dubbed the schooshundrassen ("lapdog breed") became popular in germany which closely resembled modern affens! by the early 20th century, dogs from the same litter could be identified as either schnauzers or affenpinschers depending on their head shape. most mini schnauzer historians trace the origin of their breed back to these affen-schnauzer crossings.
a book on brussels griffons notes, "there has always existed a breed of small, rough coated dogs, as early as the 15th century or before, and they were used for ratters and believed to be the forerunners of the present day affen". its theorised that crosses between the miniature schnauzer, german pinscher and pug may be the mix of dogs that helped create the affen ▽・ﻌ・▽ノ”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
appearance
affens generally weigh about 3-5 kg (7-10 lbs) with a height of about 23-30 cm (9-11.5 in) with a life expectancy of 12 - 15 years! it has a wiry, harsh and rough coat which can be short and/or medium in length. its coat is shaggier over the head and shoulders, forming a mane (🦁), with a shorter coat over the back and hind quarters, often described as neat but shaggy :3
following the breed standard, they can come in colours such as black, black and tan, black and silver, red and beige (a mixture of red, brown, black and white hairs)!! black masks are acceptable and (when registered to a kennel) white patches arent penalised but are undesirable υ´• ﻌ •`υ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
temperament
affenpinschers are active, adventurous, curious, and stubborn, but they are also fun-loving and playful!! theyre affectionate and protective towards their family <3 it shows little fear to aggressors, possessing a "big dog, small body" mentality, so owners are told to be cautious of their pup provoking a larger dog ,:< they adjust easily to changes which makes them a model dog to travel with U ´ᴥ` U
Tumblr media Tumblr media
grooming affens should be groomed twice a week, if theres any mats they should be pulled apart gently using fingers. fur on the head is usually brushed to the front and cut in a v shape to expose the eyes while the hair on the bridge of the nose is trimmed into a fan shape to keep the eyes clear ໒(^ᴥ^)७ the affens coat doesnt grow quickly so trimming an affens fur every few months should suffice
Tumblr media Tumblr media
health
responsible breeders will screen their affens for conditions such as luxating patella (kneecap dislocation) and hip dysplasia (abnormal formation of hip socket). theyve also been known to have eye issues and legg-calve-perthes (the ball at the top of the femur loses its blood supply and breaks down inside the hip joint)
affenpinschers, like other short-faced dogs, have difficulty breathing during hot weather if allowed to overheat ╥﹏╥ they may also have dental problems, and other health concerns due to the shortened nasal passages and compressed airways common in brachycephalic breeds. (i actually dont really like short faced dogs dogs due to the health conditions that follow this characteristic but its a 'breed standard' so ㄒoㄒ)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
exercise although the affenpinscher is a part of the toy breed which makes them ideal apartment dogs, they are classified as moderately active dogs so they do need exercise!! indoor play, either with their owner or with a toy, is enough to make up a large chunk of an affens exercise. a brisk walk once or twice a day is required and also allows them to socialise with other people and dogs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
training for many years affens were mistakenly believed "too stubborn to train" but the truth is they are very intelligent little dogs, easily bored with repetitive or forced training, and prefer to think independently. while yes, they can be stubborn, they are generally eager to please <3 basic obedience training is recommended, with the affen having to understanding he isnt the leader of the pack. affens get bored easily so long training sessions arent recommended so shorter, more frequent sessions with a trainer who has experience working with toy breeds are usually successful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
fun fact to end off this post: the word affe from affenpinscher comes from the german word ape, referring to the monkey-like face of the doggy!! >w<

3. Screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr.
This is one of the ones that I really don't think I can choose just one, even if I'm restricting myself to Tolkien related takes.
I think I'll do a general terrible take and a Tolkien-related take. For general terrible take, that fucking post that's like "you don't understand, these 20 companies are responsible for 80% of pollution" and then implies that killing the CEOs of these 20 (or w/e the number of companies is) would solve the climate crisis. I've seen this reblogged so many times and it is dumb as fuck on every level. That's not how companies work!! CEOs die, step down, move on all the time; there's a whole c-suite, a board of directors, and a host of vice presidents at each of these companies. My god this is common knowledge. That's on top of the fact that it ignores how the problem of fossil fuels is systemic and driven by demand on multiple levels. if you succeeded in murdering every executive and board member at each of these companies that does not remove the issue of a supply chain that runs on fossil fuels. And of course the whole concept is absurd -- tumblr kids who couldn't figure out how to buy weed in high school are talking about ordering hits on executives? lmao.
*ahem* now the Tolkien take. God there's so many. I think I'll go with a classic: the idea that because Elrond turned into a good person, therefore Maedhros and Maglor were good parental figures to him and Elros. I don't know about you, but I know people who endured terrible childhoods and are wonderful people. Likewise, I know people with kind accepting parents who are pieces of shit. Parents and what happens during childhood have a major impact on people, but it is garbage to imply that because someone turns out a certain way we know for a fact their childhood was good or bad.
That's of course not even getting into how these takes go hand in hand with the idea the Elwing and Earendil were unfit parents. Ugh.
4. What was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?
She was mean to my friend >:( Horrible takes are one thing, but if you are mean to my friends I will never forget it.
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?
I answered this here! Three guesses on who and the first two don't count.
10. worst part of fanon
Another one that's really tough. I'll go with my perennial complaint about overly simplistic Noldor-Sindar relations. It completely ignores Cirdan and the Falathrim, the Mithrim, and is usually about trying to make Thingol into the villain of the Silm. It also ignores the very real intra-Noldor tensions and the Noldor-Sindar societies of Gondolin, Nargothrond, and Sirion.
oh wait, no, I have to add: fanon use of the thorn. God. People make such a huge deal while not understanding at all how it works. No, Maedhros wouldn't have gone by 'Maedhroth.' Sindarin still had the voiceless dental frictive! Notice THingol, GorTHaur, THuringweTHil? And the idea that Elrond spoke with a 'Feanorian accent'? Not only is it disproved by canon (He says 'Sauron' in FOTR), but if you read the Shibboleth it sounds like Maglor and Maedhros abandoned the thorn early in the First Age anyway! And of course Feanorian accent Elrond also seems to have no regard for the tragedy of Elrond losing his family's language and is just treated as 'ahaha isn't kidnap fam fun and cute?'
phew ok that was a lot of violence.

7 Tips To Control Snoring
Snoring can be a frustrating and disruptive issue that affects not only adults but also young kids. To effectively address snoring, it's essential to understand its underlying causes. Snoring occurs when there's a blockage in the airflow through the mouth and nose during sleep. This blockage can be due to various factors:
1. Anatomy: The structure of the throat and nasal passages can contribute to snoring. For instance, a deviated septum or a narrow airway can obstruct airflow and lead to snoring.
2. Jaw Position: Improper alignment of the lower jaw can narrow the air passage, causing snoring. Conditions like Mandibular retrognathia, where the lower jaw is underdeveloped or positioned backward, can also contribute to snoring.
3. Teeth Alignment: Issues like teeth crowding or missing teeth can restrict tongue movement, causing it to fall back during sleep and increase the likelihood of snoring.
Tumblr media
4. Throat Infections: Certain bacterial and viral infections, such as adenoiditis and tonsillitis, can trigger snoring.
5. Nasal Congestion: Allergies, colds, or sinus infections can lead to nasal congestion, making it difficult to breathe through the nose and resulting in mouth breathing, which can cause snoring.
6. Sleep Apnea: Snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by breathing pauses during sleep. Sleep apnea can relax tongue muscles and constrict nasal passages, leading to mouth breathing and snoring.
7. Age: As people age, their throat muscles tend to relax, which can lead to snoring. This is why snoring is more common in older individuals.
8. Obesity: Excess weight and body fat around the neck and throat can put pressure on the airways, making it harder for air to pass through and leading to snoring.
9. Sleeping Position: Sleeping on the back can cause the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to relax and block the airway, resulting in snoring.
10. Alcohol: Consuming alcohol before bedtime can relax throat muscles, increasing the likelihood of snoring.

Every time I take the shc quiz I end up wrestling with the questions as I go. I’ve decided to start doing it in writing. At the very least it’s writing practice, and I’ll stop retreading old ground with myself every time. If people in your family or community disagree with you, is it hard to act against their wishes?   Family? Sure. Community? No. Even with people I love, the struggle is usually in them not agreeing with me or me not understanding them. Either prove I'm wrong or see it my way, damn it.
I tend to go along to get along in groups, but that’s not the same thing as community. Also it’s boring, but riling things up isn’t worth it most of the time, and the times it is my spouse usually stops me saying anything (which is ironic, because in every other circumstance he’s a troll. he likes to stir the pot with people he knows as a sign of affection).
(I’m specifically remembering early covid. He had a dental surgery, and we were both masked in the waiting room. Two other people were not masked. One was across the room on her phone, one sitting quietly near us. The person on the phone loudly and proudly proclaims they have no intention of ever wearing a mask because if “god wants me, it’s my time to go.” My head snapped around so fast I probably should’ve gotten whiplash. My mouth opened -- I have no idea what I was going to say, exactly -- and he stepped on my foot. His reason was he didn’t want to have to fight the person on the phone if they got mad at me. I proceeded to give him a diatribe about herd immunity and basic common decency and empathy while occasionally pointedly looking at the quiet unmasked person sitting near us. And then he got called in for his appointment and I went to sit in the hot but unpeopled car.)
And the actual *communities* I've been a part of -- no, it's not hard to act against their wishes when I'm in a healthy place because they've all been online communities. When I was much younger and craved -- I don't even know. Attention? Validation? I went from having almost no social life to having one entirely online, and I had no real framework for how to act. I was, like any young teen, equal parts wildly cringe and anxiety to be liked. I wanted to be admired.
I still do! But for being me, thanks. Okay. Enough ramble. Time to pick an answer... which is tough, because they’re all valid answers to the question. 1 and 2 specifically if I’m thinking about family; 3, 4, and 5 for groups and communities, depending on the context.
Yes, because I care about them.
I care about my people, but that mostly makes me want to be around them and do things for and with them. It doesn't mean I have to agree with them, though I’d prefer to on important subjects. Whether or not I’d defer to them depends on the person, context, and how important the issue is to me.
As for community, I care about my communities and their mores, but not like that. They don't define me or my choices.
Yes, because you should listen to other people before you act.
Obviously? I mean, I’m not going to take advice on every topic from every person, but I want all relevant opinions before I act, and several of my people are quite clever. I value their input.
Yes, because I have to live with and around them, and they can make my life more difficult with their disapproval.
I have to live with them: I had SO MUCH fight in me when I was younger. Argue argue argue. Stand my ground. Make a fuss. I can't do that anymore. I discovered my ideal situation is calm. I am ape. Give me fruit and hammock and a source of good vibes. So yeah, I generally try to keep the peace. But I don't think I'd call it a moral imperative. It's just easier.
It might be hard, but I've got to do what I think is right.
I try to always do what I think is right. I’m not always correct about what that is, and my mind can be changed, often by myself. I spend a lot of time arguing with myself. My brain is a very busy place.
No, not at all.
For little things, or even middling things, this is the one. I do what I want, unless it impinges on someone else, in which case I usually adjust slightly. For important stuff, moral/ethical issues, it’s harder, because if I care about someone (= they are my people = they are family), then I’m automatically going to consider their input. Answer: is really hard to pick. Do I pick the Community answer (not at all), or the Family answer (yes, because I care about them)? I’m inclined to pick the Community answer simply because this feels like a Badger-filtering question, which leads me to think Community is what it’s asking about despite the “or family.” (Of course, it does say “people in your” -- so it could mean individuals, not groups. But I’m going with my first assumption, because I’m fully aware that I’m massively overthinking at this point.) So then. No, not at all. Next question: When you’re not sure what’s the right thing to do, what do you turn to?

Orthodontics: How To Pick The Best Clinic For You?
Orthodontics is one of the most important medical treatments for children and adults alike. It helps correct malocclusion, which is a condition in which your teeth don’t align properly with each other.
The most common treatment for malocclusion involves wearing orthodontic braces or retainers that are worn over time to gradually move the teeth into their proper position. Here are some tips on how to pick the best Orthodontist Melbourne for you:
Do your Research
To ensure that you find the right orthodontist, do your research. Check out reviews and ratings online to see what people have said about your prospective clinic.
Look at the website of each clinic to see if they have an easy-to-navigate layout with information on their services and location. Ask friends or family members who recently got braces for recommendations, as well as any dentists you trust.
Choose the Right Clinic
When you are searching for the right orthodontist, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. Take some time to consider your needs and what kind of service you’re looking for.
For example, if price is a major factor in choosing an office then don’t be afraid to ask questions about their fees or inquire about payment plans – this way you will know exactly what type of budgeting you will need before starting treatment.
Another thing that is important when choosing an orthodontist is their credentials and background history with patients; this may not seem like an issue at first glance but it can make all the difference if something does go wrong during treatment and having confidence in your doctor's abilities can help alleviate any worries or concerns that may arise later down the road.
Tumblr media
Consider Your Convenience
You can also consider how convenient the clinic is to get to. Some clinics are located in busy areas, while others are tucked away in quiet suburbs. If you’re lucky enough to live close by a clinic that offers flexible scheduling and ample parking, then you should definitely take advantage of these perks.
If you’re looking for a great dental clinic, then you should definitely consider the above factors. You may also want to look at how much experience the dentist has and what kind of reputation he or she has built over time.
Check for Certifications and Reviews
You can also find out if a clinic is certified. This means that the clinic has been audited and meets certain standards. These standards usually include insurance reimbursement, office hours, and cleanliness.
Check for reviews from previous patients. In addition to checking for certifications and awards, you should also look at past patient experiences to see how their experiences went with this particular doctor or orthodontist. Why Location Matters: Benefits of a Dental Clinic Near You
When it comes to maintaining oral health, the significance of choosing a dental clinic that is conveniently located cannot be overstated. The decision of where to receive dental care often extends beyond mere preferences; it influences the frequency of visits, the quality of care received, and, ultimately, your overall health. In this article, we delve into the myriad benefits of having a dental clinic near me and how it can enhance your experience as a patient.
Tumblr media
Accessibility: The Key to Consistent Care
One of the most compelling reasons to choose a dental clinic near you is its accessibility. Proximity to your home or workplace means you are more likely to attend regular check-ups and dental appointments. This is particularly important given that preventive care is crucial for maintaining oral health. When patients are situated close to their dental providers, they encounter fewer barriers to accessing care. This includes hurdles such as traffic, time constraints, and the inconvenience of long commutes.
Moreover, an accessible location can be particularly beneficial for families. Parents juggling busy schedules can easily coordinate appointments for their children, ensuring that dental health is prioritised. In emergencies, a nearby clinic can provide immediate care, reducing the stress and potential complications that arise from delaying treatment. This straightforward access can make all the difference between maintaining a healthy smile and facing more significant dental issues that require extensive and costly interventions.
Building a Strong Patient-Provider Relationship
Selecting a dental clinic within your community fosters the development of a solid patient-provider relationship. When you visit the same clinic regularly, you establish a rapport with your dentist and their staff. This familiarity can lead to more personalised care as your dental team gets to know your unique oral health history, preferences, and specific needs.
A relationship with your dental provider can also increase your comfort level during visits. Many individuals experience anxiety when visiting the dentist, but having a trusted professional nearby who understands your concerns can alleviate some of that stress. A dentist who knows you well can provide tailored advice and treatment plans that resonate with your lifestyle and goals. This individualised approach enhances your experience and encourages better adherence to recommended treatments and preventive measures.
Community Involvement and Support
Choosing a dental clinic near you often means selecting a provider actively involved in your local community. Many dental professionals take pride in giving back through community outreach programs, free dental days, or educational initiatives in schools. This involvement reflects their commitment to their practice and the well-being of the community they serve.
Furthermore, a locally situated clinic is likely to understand the specific health concerns and needs of the area's population. They may be more attuned to common dental issues that affect the community and can address these with targeted preventive measures and educational efforts. Such community-focused practices can foster a sense of belonging and shared purpose, making you feel more connected to your dental provider and its mission.
Convenience and Flexibility
The convenience of having a dental clinic nearby extends beyond mere travel time; it also encompasses flexibility in scheduling appointments. Many local clinics offer extended hours to accommodate their patients' varying schedules. Whether you require an early morning appointment before work or a late afternoon slot after school, having a nearby clinic often means greater availability and flexibility.
In addition, local clinics offer a range of services under one roof, from routine cleanings and check-ups to more extensive cosmetic and restorative procedures. This comprehensive approach means you can receive the care you need without travelling to multiple locations. It simplifies managing your dental health, making it easier to prioritise oral hygiene and ensure that you receive timely interventions when necessary.
Cost-Effectiveness and Insurance Benefits
Choosing a dental clinic close to home can also have financial implications. Many dental practices are keen to accommodate local patients, often offering competitive pricing and flexible payment options. In addition, being close to home means that you may incur lower transportation costs, mainly if you rely on public transport or have limited access to a vehicle.
Furthermore, many dental clinics partner with local insurance providers or offer in-house financing plans that can ease the burden of out-of-pocket expenses. By selecting a clinic familiar with your insurance policy, you can ensure that you maximise your benefits and minimise unexpected costs. This financial accessibility further emphasises the importance of choosing a dental provider conveniently located in your community.
In summery, the location of a dental clinic plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall dental care experience. With accessibility, the opportunity to build strong relationships, community involvement, convenience, and cost-effectiveness, selecting a nearby dental provider can significantly impact your oral health journey. As you consider your options, reflect on a local clinic's benefits. The decision to prioritise proximity is not merely about convenience; it is about investing in a healthier, happier future for yourself and your family. By choosing a dental clinic near you, you are making a proactive decision that underscores the importance of oral health within your everyday life.

The Essential Guide to General Dentistry: Maintaining a Healthy Smile for Life
Tumblr media
General dentistry focuses on maintaining the overall health of teeth and gums through a variety of preventive, diagnostic, and restorative services. General dental practitioners are the first line of defence in oral healthcare, helping individuals and families protect their dental health throughout their lives. From routine cleanings to more complex procedures, general dentists ensure the longevity and well-being of your smile.
The Role
A general dental practitioner provides a wide range of oral care services, from regular check-ups and cleanings to diagnosing and treating dental problems like cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. They serve as a trusted healthcare provider, helping to prevent oral health issues before they become serious. Additionally, they offer guidance on proper dental hygiene and diet to help patients maintain optimal oral health between visits.
Education and Training Required
Becoming a general dentist requires extensive education and training. After completing an undergraduate degree, aspiring dentists must attend dental school, which typically lasts four years. During dental school, they receive both classroom education and hands-on clinical training. Upon graduation, they must pass a series of exams to obtain their license to practice. Many also participate in continuing education to stay updated on the latest dental technology and techniques.
Services Offered
General dentistry covers a broad range of services aimed at promoting oral health. These services include routine cleanings and exams, dental X-rays, fillings, root canals, and crown placements. Preventive treatments, such as fluoride applications and sealants, help protect teeth from decay. General dentists also provide advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques, nutrition, and other factors that contribute to overall dental health.
Importance of Regular Dental Check-ups
Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Visiting the dentist at least twice a year allows for early detection of issues such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. Early treatment is often less invasive and less costly, helping to prevent more serious conditions down the road. Routine exams also include professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, which can't be eliminated through regular brushing and flossing alone.
Common Procedures Performed
General dentists perform a variety of common procedures to maintain and restore oral health. These include cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, fillings to repair cavities, extractions of damaged or decayed teeth, and root canals to save infected teeth. They also provide cosmetic services, such as teeth whitening and bonding, to enhance the appearance of a patient's smile.
Family Dental Care
Family dental care is a key part of general dentistry, offering services for patients of all ages—from children getting their first teeth to adults seeking to preserve their smiles as they age. Family dentists focus on building long-term relationships with patients and providing personalized care that addresses the specific needs of each family member. Regular visits to them ensure that everyone in the household receives consistent, quality dental care.
Oral Hygiene Tips for Maintaining Good Dental Health
Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily to remove plaque between the teeth, and use mouthwash to kill bacteria that brushing alone may miss. It's also important to limit sugary snacks and drinks, which can contribute to tooth decay. Regular dental check-ups are a critical part of a good oral hygiene routine.
Finding a Reliable General Dental Practitioner
When looking for a general dentist, consider factors such as their experience, credentials, and patient reviews. A good dentist should create a comfortable environment, listen to your concerns, and provide clear communication about your treatment options. It's also helpful to find one who offers flexible scheduling and modern equipment to ensure the best care for you and your family.
Conclusion
General dentistry plays a vital role in maintaining overall oral health and preventing serious dental issues. Regular visits to a general dentist, along with proper oral hygiene practices, are key to preserving a healthy smile for years to come. By finding a reliable dentist and following their guidance, you can ensure long-term dental health for yourself and your family.

Dealing with a Dental Emergency? Here’s What to Do Before You Reach a Dentist
Tumblr media
Dental emergencies can be distressing and require prompt action to minimize damage and relieve pain. Knowing how to handle these situations before you reach a dentist can make a significant difference. Here’s a practical guide on what to do when faced with common dental emergencies:
1. Toothache
Immediate Care:
Rinse Your Mouth: Use warm salt water to rinse your mouth. This can help reduce swelling and clean the affected area.
Floss Carefully: Gently floss around the tooth to remove any food particles or debris. Avoid using sharp objects.
Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the sore area to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
Avoid Certain Foods: Steer clear of very hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks that might aggravate the toothache.
2. Knocked-Out Tooth
Immediate Care:
Handle with Care: Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root) to avoid damaging it.
Rinse and Store: Rinse the tooth gently with water if it's dirty, but don’t scrub it. Place the tooth back in its socket if possible, or keep it in a container with milk or a saline solution. If you can’t do either, keep it in your mouth between your gum and cheek.
Seek Immediate Help: Get to a dentist as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes to an hour. Quick action increases the chances of saving the tooth.
3. Broken Tooth or Chipped Tooth
Immediate Care:
Rinse and Protect: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If there are sharp edges, cover them with dental wax or sugarless gum to avoid cutting your mouth.
Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce pain and swelling.
Save Fragments: Keep any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them to your dentist. They may be able to use them in the repair.
4. Lost Filling or Lost Crown
Immediate Care:
Protect the Tooth: If a filling or crown falls out, place a piece of sugarless gum or dental wax over the exposed area to protect it until you can see your dentist.
Avoid Certain Foods: Avoid sticky or hard foods that could further damage the tooth or cause discomfort.
Temporary Replacement: If the crown is still intact, you can temporarily reattach it with a small amount of denture adhesive or dental cement available over-the-counter, but be sure to consult your dentist as soon as possible.
5. Abscess or Swollen Gums
Immediate Care:
Rinse with Warm Salt Water: Rinsing with warm salt water can help reduce swelling and clean the area.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Use over-the-counter pain relievers to manage discomfort. Be cautious with antibiotics; only take them if prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Seek Professional Help: An abscess is a serious infection that requires professional treatment. Contact your dentist promptly.
6. Dental Injury from Trauma**
Immediate Care:
Control Bleeding: Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to control bleeding.
Rinse and Protect: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If there are any visible injuries or damage, protect the area and seek immediate dental care.
Pain Management: Use over-the-counter pain relievers as needed, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.
7. Dental Implants and Dentist Kids
For dental implants, if you experience issues such as discomfort or signs of infection, follow the same general care steps and contact your dentist for advice. For families, dentist kids or children's dentist who specialize in pediatric care can provide additional guidance on handling dental issues for younger patients.
8. General Tips for All Dental Emergencies
Document Symptoms: Take note of any symptoms, pain levels, and the time the emergency occurred. This information can help your dentist provide appropriate care.
Avoid Delay: Don’t wait to seek help. Early intervention can prevent further complications and improve the outcome.
