The Philosophy of Sport
The philosophy of sports is a field of study that examines the nature, values, and meaning of sport. It delves into the ethical, aesthetic, and metaphysical dimensions of sporting activities, considering how sports intersect with human life, society, and culture. Here, we explore various aspects and questions central to the philosophy of sports.
The Nature of Sport
Defining Sport:
What constitutes a sport? This involves distinguishing sport from other forms of physical activity or play, often focusing on elements such as competition, skill, rules, and institutional structures.

Purpose and Value:

Sport and Human Flourishing: How do sports contribute to personal and communal well-being? This includes discussions on physical fitness, mental health, and the development of virtues like discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
Ethical Dimensions
Fairness and Justice:

Equality and Access: Who gets to play? This question addresses inclusivity and accessibility in sports, considering factors like gender, race, economic status, and disability.
Sportsmanship and Virtue:
What constitutes good sportsmanship? This explores the ethical behavior expected of participants, including respect for opponents, graciousness in victory and defeat, and adherence to the spirit of the game.
Role Models and Influence: What responsibilities do athletes have as public figures? This considers the impact of athletes’ behavior on fans, particularly young people, and the broader society.
Aesthetic and Metaphysical Aspects
Beauty and Excellence:
How do we appreciate the beauty in sports? This involves considering the aesthetic qualities of sporting performances, such as grace, agility, and strategic complexity.
The Pursuit of Excellence: What does it mean to excel in sports? This examines the nature of athletic excellence and the drive for peak performance.
Identity and Meaning:
How do sports shape our identities? This question explores the role of sports in personal and cultural identity, including the sense of belonging and pride associated with teams and athletes.
Metaphysical Questions: What is the essence of sport? This involves deeper philosophical inquiries into the fundamental nature of sporting activities and their place in human life.
Social and Cultural Impact
Sport and Society:
How do sports influence society? This examines the social functions of sports, including their role in education, community building, and national identity.
Commercialization and Media: What are the effects of commercialization on sports? This considers the influence of money, sponsorship, and media coverage on the nature and values of sports.
Globalization and Cultural Exchange:
How do sports contribute to global understanding and cultural exchange? This explores the international dimension of sports, including global competitions like the Olympics and World Cup.
The philosophy of sports is a rich and multifaceted field that addresses fundamental questions about human activity, ethics, aesthetics, and society. By examining the deeper meaning and values associated with sports, this philosophy provides insights into how sports shape and reflect the human experience.

That was an absolutely fascinating read and I'm almost crying imagining being stuck inside of my apartment this vividly and then seeing those hero students turn a would-be massacre around. Or watching the broadcast and posting online cause DO YOU SEE THIS TOO??? Would you consider posting this particular darling as a one shot on ao3? Or the opinion piece? It wouldn't interrupt the story that way but remain accessible.
If I had the time, I’d love to make it its own one shot. Maybe I’ll manage one day. I’d really like to. I have this entire one shot around Mirio getting his license that I’d also like to do if I had time.
I think the part about this backstory that makes it so compelling to me is more the world’s reaction than the fight itself. I just have always been really intrigued by those moments where the world entire world stops to focus on the exact same moment—particularly when they have happy endings, like the Tham Luang cave rescue. I feel like so often this world is prone to apathy. Tragedies happen and no one cares, but sometimes we do. Sometimes everyone cares. Sometimes the entire world gets together and wants to save someone.
They all risked their lives and their licenses because they just loved the people of Yokohama that much. They didn’t have to know them. They needed heroes, so they were going to get them.
But they were all terrified the entire time it was happening. And they all thought they were doing this alone.
And I think there’s a special kind of magic in the idea that they weren’t alone. The entire world held its breath and rooted them on. They loved and were loved in turn.
AfO’s escape and potential return to power was a footnote comparatively. Fuck that guy. Look at what their kids did. Aren’t they spectacular.
