Skagway, AK (No. 4)
The Skagway unit includes much of the historic downtown such as buildings owned and restored by NPS and others, some leased even today for ordinary commercial purposes to recreate the city's bustling activity. The visitor center in Skagway is located in railroad depot building at Second and Broadway and is a good place to begin tours either led by a ranger or self-guided. Junior rangers can plan their activities further and earn their badges further up Broadway at the Pantheon Saloon.
White Pass & Yukon Route Railway Broadway Depot. Corner of 2nd Avenue and Broadway. Now serving as the park's Visitors Center and Headquarters, the depot was the first building the railway built for this purpose, completed in December 1898. The structure served this purpose at least until the 1950s. However, together with the adjoining administration building and the railway itself, these were taken over by the U.S. Army Railway Operating Battalion from 1942 to 1946 to supply construction of the Alaska Highway, the first land route to Alaska, then under construction in adjoining British Columbia and Yukon Territory as part of the war effort. It was the only commercial railway in the United States taken over for this purpose. The building was transferred to NPS in 1976 with restoration completed in 1984, returning its appearance to the 1908-1915 time period.
White Pass & Yukon Route Railway Administration Building. 2nd Avenue, east of Broadway. The bottom floor houses the park museum while additional park offices are located upstairs. Located next to the depot, the Daily Alaskan noted during the year of its completion in its May 3, 1900 edition that it the railway's headquarters was "by far the finest wooden structure in the city". As with the depot, it was vacated in 1969, transferred to NPS in 1976, with restoration completed in 1984.
Moore Homestead. Between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue, east of Broadway. The first homestead in Skagway, which predates the gold rush era.

Its historic timeline goes back to the early 1880s arrival of Robert Hahn. In 1889, at the time of the Great Seattle Fire that devastated most of Pioneer Square, Hahn operated a wood-frame saloon and beer garden on this site. After the fire, it was said to be the last place standing for a man to buy a beer.  Following the fire, wood structures were out and brick was in, and in 1897, Hahn built the structure under nomination as a one-story, brick building. A decade later, two stories were added to the existing structure just as Seattle prepared for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. Those two new floors were dubbed Hotel Elliott, which provided private semi-permanent housing for Seattle’s growing workforce, one of the first single-room-occupancy (SRO) hotels to offer private baths with running hot and cold water. The Hahn Building/Hotel Elliott is prominently featured in historic photos of the Market Entrance across the decades. Along with the Hotel Elliott, the ground floor has retail has hosted a number of commercial ventures—from long-time tenant Owl Drugs to the infamous International Donut Shop.

Artificially Sweetened Sodomy
Chapter Three: Whores are Easier to Deal With
Kari pressed her lips together, wincing as she compressed the broken skin as she considered the weight of her situation. “What do I do?” her mind asked on a scream.
Tig nearly choked on the cloud of his exhaled smoke as he watched her pink tongue dart out and moisten her lips.
He was mesmerized by the small movement and didn’t realize at first that she was nodding slightly.
“You’re sure you’re not going to be a problem?” he asked and tried to maintain a cool façade.
Kari nodded again, a little stronger this time.
“Yeah?” he asked as he cocked an inky black eyebrow.
“Yeah,” Kari finally mumbled and rubbed her fingertips against her throbbing temples. She longed for her mostly effective rapid-release migraine medication as she was certain her skull was splitting at the seams.
She looked over when a metallic tinkling noise fell around her ears and she found her abductor holding out a dented flask towards her.
“No thanks,” she finally said and sat up straighter in the seat, thinking alcohol wouldn’t do any good for her head except make her pay less attention and notice details that might be important for later.
Tig pretended to not notice her barely suppress a flinch when he moved away from the door and pulled on the plastic handle. “Where’s the tracker?” he asked as he patted the seat between them.
“There’s no point in denying it,” she thought in the small space before she answered. “Behind the water pump,” Kari mumbled as she stared straight ahead, feeling his eyes memorizing her, practically touching her with the weight of his gaze.
She watched him out of the corner of her eye as he pulled a warm soda from the nylon bag and held it out to her.
“Thanks,” she murmured and took the brightly colored aluminum can from him, careful to avoid their fingers brushing against each other.
“We’ll get out of here in a minute,” he murmured, and she watched him slide out of the sturdy vehicle and pop the broad hood.
Kari found herself gulping the soda as Tig removed and destroyed the government-issued tracker and did a once-over the rest of the SUV before getting back behind the wheel and cranking the large engine to life.
Tig glanced over his shoulder at her as she drummed her fingers on the tops of her thighs and stared down at the floor. He felt a strange sensation slide around inside his gut and light up his central nervous as he found her fingers bare, devoid of any jewelry. “Do you belong to someone?” he thought before he spoke.
“You want to sit up here Agent Stillwater, it’s a little bit of a drive.”
Kari shook her head. “I’m okay here and please no more Agent stuff, can you just call me Kari?”
The pull of his lips into an unreadable smile both frightened and made Kari have a glut of questions.
“As long as you call me Tig,” he murmured as he turned around further in the driver’s seat and they locked eyes.
“What?” Kari finally asked as his expression remained neutral and he remained silent. She wasn’t sure if she should feel like prey on the Serengeti or a pilot fish living symbiotically with a Great White shark.
Tig shook his head. “Nothing,” he muttered as he got the bulky vehicle moving and eventually spilled back onto the interstate.
Kari kept her hands clasped together in her lap as he pushed the accelerator to a comfortable cruising speed, careful to not draw the attention of the CHP.
Tig kept nervously moving his hands around the steering wheel as he kept glancing up at her in the rearview mirror.
She shifted uncomfortably on the seat, her multiple layers and Kevlar vest making her sweat profusely, her anxiety leeched from her pores and she could smell how unpleasantly fragrant she was becoming.
Tig felt his chest tighten when his name fell from her lips.
“Tig?”
He looked up in the mirror and met her eyes. “Yes?”
Kari cleared her throat. “Can I have one of those cigarettes?”
“Yeah, here,” he said and passed her the pack and dark green lighter.
“Thanks,” she mumbled, eager to have the acrid cigarette smoke to drown out her body odor.
Tig noticed how she began shifting on the seat as she took slow, deliberate drags off the cigarette. He heard her chuckle and quickly cover her smile when she caught him looking.
“What’s funny?” he asked.
Kari shook her head and retrieved the empty soda can off the floorboard to flick her ashes into. “Just when I thought I was finally going to stop smoking.”
As Tig paid better attention to the sudden stoppage of traffic, back at the Wit Sec house, agents and local police swarmed. Doors were kicked in and windows ripped off in questioning everyone about the abducted agent.
As agents descended on Charming and looked everywhere for their missing agent, Tig continued towards the cheap motel and long-term rentals, at one point, he dumped the Yukon and stole a paneled van, nearly beige with the layer of dirt. Kari slid onto the passenger seat, not wanting to sit on the bare, metal floor of the rear of the van.
They were about half an hour from the motel, Kari had lapsed into a comfortable silence as she stared out the window at everything moving by. “Talk to her,” Tig ordered himself as he glanced over at her, he considered that she was most likely in some kind of medical shock.
“How long you been working ATF?” Tig finally asked, drawing out his words.
Kari glanced over at him and pulled one of the three remaining cigarettes from the pack and offered him one of his own. He accepted and watched her light hers before she offered her lit one in trade for his.
Tig made sure their fingers brushed and felt a static shock as he pulled hard on the filter her lips had just been touching, tasting her breath.
“Just passed the one-year mark, from what I’ve heard, the Wit Sec babysitting is a hazing of sorts,” she said as she shook her head and rolled down the window a few inches, letting the brisk, clean outside suck in her second-hand smoke.
“What was the original plan when you got there? The witness?” Kari asked while he inhaled and signaled for the off-ramp.
Tig ignored her question and looked at the directions he had jotted on a burger chain napkin.
The motel appeared on the left side and was very underwhelming. The faded blue long-term condos were set in the rear of the property and their room was apparently on the ground-floor corner.
Happy’s friends had someone’s nephew go and check-in at the motel under the false name and stolen credit card. The parking spot for the room was just out of the security camera’s entire sweep and the video was recorded over every twenty-four hours.
Tig put the van in park and looked over at Kari as she looked out the windshield at the piss poor room.
She barely suppressed a finch when his hand fell over her hand where it rested on the armrest.
“It’s a short walk to the room, I’m going to come around and open your door,” Tig murmured.
Kari nodded as he added. “There won’t be any problem getting to the door?”
“I will not be a problem,” she said in a strained voice and stared at the room door through the bug-splattered windshield.
Tig tightened his hand around hers as he spoke, “look at me.”
Kari pressed her lips together and turned her head to meet his startling blue eyes. “No problem?” he rasped musically.
“None,” she whispered and fought the urge to try and yank her hand free.
Tig nodded and released his hold on her before getting out of the van, gathering the duffle bags, and opening her door.
Kari climbed out of the van and waited until he pushed the heavy door closed before following him to the room. He slid the plastic keycard until it beeped and flashed a series of green flashes before he pushed the door open.
She followed him inside and fumbled for a light switch and flooded the room with a wan yellow light. Tig pushed the door closed and slid the extra chain lock in place, in addition to the deadbolt.
He watched Kari look around the dingy room, pale yellow carpets and faux wood paneling the single room, extra sitting space in front of an older model flatscreen tv, closet and small bathroom with a cramped tub and shower.
Tig watched her eyes move over the single queen bed in the middle of the room before she briefly met his eyes and turned her attention to looking for the remote control and the local news. “It’s really cold in here,” she remarked as she flipped though the channels.
“These rooms are generally rented at hourly rates, no one cares about the temperature,” he said and winked when she looked over at him.
Kari settled in the creaky chair and adjusted the volume when the commercial break was over.
Tig took the time to walk into the small bathroom and dial Clay.
Clay picked up at the end of the first ring.
“Brother, you okay?”
Tig leaned against the door frame so he could keep Kari in sight as he half-smiled. “It’s okay, got to the motel, thank Happy.”
“Do you have a guest with you?”
Tig chuckled, “yeah.”
“Is she alive?”
“Very.”
“Is she going to stay that way?”
“Yes.”
Clay was silent for a minute. “Good,” he finally said. “Do you need more money?”
Tig shook head as he answered, “no, I’d like to get stay here a night or two and keep north.”
“Are you coming back brother?”
Tig gave a ragged sigh and ran a hand through his dark hair. “I don’t know,” he finally admitted. “I’ve found something,” he added unhelpfully.
“You always have a home here brother, I hope to meet this something someday. Call if you need anything,” Clay added before he ended the call.
Tig pushed his phone in his back pocket as he watched Kari watch the news and casually loosen her braid until she could run her fingers through her tangled hair.
Kari looked over at him when the loud thump of his boots sounded as he kicked them off before slipping out of his jacket.
Tig stretched out on the bed and slipped one hand behind his head before he patted the empty space next to him when he caught her staring.
Kari scoffed and worked on a stubborn tangle when he patted the bed again.
“No,” she finally said and turned her attention back to the shitty tv screen and pretended to be captivated by the weather report of sunny skies the following day.
“I thought you weren’t going to be a problem,” Tig said and sat up when she turned back to him, anger etched in her tired face. “I’m not but I’m not getting into that bed with you.”
Tig’s mind tried to rapidly put together an approach. He reached for his discarded jacket and drained the flask, wincing as the alcohol burned a hot path down his throat and spread warmth throughout his chest and belly. “You need to do this right,” his mind warned and climbed to his feet.
As Tig rose from the bed, Kari also stood from the creaky chair, tension filling her, a cold trickle moved down the length of her spine.
Tig held his hands up in the air and wiggled his fingers. “I promise I’ll keep my hands wherever you tell me, but you need to get in the fucking bed.”
Kari shook her head, her blood pressure rising as she found it hard to breathe with the compression of the vest. She felt herself getting overheated despite how chilly the room was.
Tig’s eyes moved over her face, he could practically see the coiled tension inside her, electricity building and threatening to shoot from her fingers.
“You gotta keep this shit together,” he thought and kept his hands outstretched. “Get in the bed, you have to be tired. I’m not going to do anything out of line.”
Kari narrowed her eyes at him, unable to judge the veracity of his words since he was there to kill that young witness. She fought to keep her shoulders back despite the appeal of laying down and closing her eyes, especially getting out of the fucking vest.
“What if I wanted to stay in that chair instead?” she asked, her voice steady.
Tig shook his head, “it’ll be cold sitting up all night.”
“I’ll risk freezing to death.”
“I can’t have that happen; a dead ATF agent isn’t good.”
“Kidnapping and assault is fine though?” she asked on a scoff.
Tig stood up taller, every moment spent with Kari reaffirming why he liked dealing with whores, livestock and the comatose.

In Photos: What If the Cadillac Escalade Was Designed in 1959?
Like ships passing in the night, Cadillac’s two most iconic nameplates barely shared dealership floor space. The two-door Eldorado—that symbol of mid-century American automotive glamour and luxury—was being put to rest just as a new E-named vehicle, the Escalade, was arriving to restore Cadillac to the forefront of automotive vogue. In only 20 short years, with no prior pedigree, the Escalade has come to dominate and define the luxury SUV space. But what if it had some existing lineage? What if Cadillac had first thought up the Escalade back in the 1950s when it dropped the Eldorado on an increasingly affluent, booming America?
Great question, and it’s been answered by talented designer Abilemec Arellano, who imagined what a 1959 Cadillac Escalade might have looked like if the luxury division of General Motors had thought up the luxury SUV concept 40 years sooner. Cleverly, the renderings depict what appears to be a more luxurious take on the late-1950s-era Chevrolet Suburban. Just as today’s Escalade is split off from the tree that grows Chevy’s Tahoe and Suburban, as well as GMC’s Yukon and Yukon XL, this illustration assumes the same parts sharing relationship might exist between the hypothetical Cold War-era versions of these vehicles.
It’s almost eery how similar the births of the Eldorado and Escalade were. Both sat at vanguards of garish automotive styling trends. Throughout the 1950s, Cadillac engaged in a tailfin arms race with other automakers, which culminated in the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado’s towering rear dorsals. At the changeover to a new millennium, Cadillac decided to slap its badges, chrome, and some fancier wood and leather on GM’s lumbering GMT truck platform, kicking off an increasingly hedonistic race to make taller, heavier, and more lumbering luxury vehicles—gas prices be damned! But what’s really clever about the 1999–today Cadillac SUV is how it captured the  Eldorado’s stylish “personal luxury” essence and repackaged it in a format that was appealing to early-2000s America.
youtube
Abilemec translates that idea to his 1959 Escalade design, incorporating Cadillac’s famous tailfins, jet-afterburner taillights, and chrome-tastic front and rear fascias onto the hulking Suburban’s wagon body style. The hypothetical old ‘Slade features three rows of bench seating, a big ol’ V-8 engine under its hood, and a host of electronic power accessories. In an Instagram post, the designer even furnishes a would-be 1959 sales brochure entry for the Escalade (and the awesome faux commercial above), which reads:
“A NEW REALM OF MOTORING MAJESTY!
A completely new way of transportation as radical as this could only be a product of Cadillac, the standard of the world. A perfect blend of practicality, convenience, value, elegance, and comfort and the best luxury experience available in a motor car are a few of the things you can expect from the most modern Cadillac ever built—Escalade is a realm all its own. To see it and to drive it is to discover [a] new measure of fulfillment in modern motoring.”
If the Escalade were to have had a 40-year head start, would it have entered the market in 1999 as a rebadged, hastily put-together GMC Yukon Denali? Probably not, but, we suspect, 40 years of baggage—and those awful malaise years in the 1970s and 1980s—likely would have dulled the shine of the Cadillac SUV’s star somewhat, just as they wore away at the Eldorado’s.

Robson Street, Vancouver’s most famous shopping street is set in the heart of downtown. It is a three-block commercial mecca including premier fashion stores, fine dining and amenities.
Vancouver’s Chinatown is the second-largest of its kind in North America, and home to more than 30,000 people of Chinese descent. Authentic architecture, exotic cuisine, and colourful specialty shops make each turn down the narrow alleyways a unique adventure.
Drive through Gastown, the original site from which modern Vancouver evolved. The varied shops and boutiques make the area a popular shopping district. The famous steam clock fills the air with music every 15 minutes.
Stanley Park is a lush rainforest in the heart of the city. This 1,000-acre park teems with wildlife and natural beauty. The park was created in 1889 and named after the Governor General of Canada (who was also responsible for the Stanley Cup Hockey Tournament).  Stanley Park houses a zoo, aquarium, rose garden, cricket fields, and an open-air theatre. The thousand-acre park is bound by a three-mile (4.8-kilometre) seawall, which also serves as a bike path.
Granville Island, once an industrial area, is now home to craft studios, artist galleries, theatres, a brewery, and a public market featuring street performers.  Many of the buildings have retained their original timber beams and tin roofs.
Afterwards, the coach takes you to the airport.

Bering Sea changes startle scientists, worry residents
Tumblr media
The Yupik Eskimo village of Kotlik on Alaska’s northwest coast relies on a cold, hard blanket of sea ice to protect homes from vicious winter Bering Sea storms.
Frigid north winds blow down from the Arctic Ocean, freeze saltwater and push sea ice south. The ice normally prevents waves from forming and locks onto beaches, walling off villages. But not this year.
In February, southwest winds brought warm air and turned thin sea ice into “snow cone ice” that melted or blew off. When a storm pounded Norton Sound, water on Feb. 12 surged up the Yukon River and into Kotlik, flooding low-lying homes. Lifelong resident Philomena Keyes, 37, awoke to knee-deep water outside her house.
“This is the first I experienced in my life, a flood that happened in the winter, in February,” Keyes said in a phone interview.
Winter storm surge flooding is the latest indication that something’s off-kilter around the Bering Strait, the gateway from the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic Ocean. Rapid, profound changes tied to high atmospheric temperatures, a direct result of climate change, may be reordering the region’s physical makeup. Ocean researchers are asking themselves if they’re witnessing the transformation of an ecosystem.
The Bering Sea last winter saw record-low sea ice. Climate models predicted less ice, but not this soon, said Seth Danielson, a physical oceanographer at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
“The projections were saying we would’ve hit situations similar to what we saw last year, but not for another 40 or 50 years,” Danielson said.
Walruses and seals use sea ice to rest and give birth. Villagers use sea ice to hunt them. Sea ice is the primary habitat of polar bears. Algae that clings to the bottom of sea ice blooms in spring, dies and sinks, sending an infusion of food to clams, snails and sea worms on the ocean floor — the prey of gray whales, walruses and bearded seals.
Sea ice also affects commercially valuable fish. Sea ice historically has created a Bering Sea “cold pool,” an east-west barrier of extremely cold, salty water at the bottom of the wide, shallow continental shelf. The wall of cold water historically has concentrated Pacific cod and walleye pollock in the southeastern Bering Sea.
“It tends to extend from the Russian side to the northwest,” said Lyle Britt, a fisheries biologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “It kind of comes down almost like a little hockey stick shape … through the center of the southeast Bering Sea.”
However, when Britt and other NOAA researchers last year conducted annual fish and ocean condition surveys, they got a big surprise: For the first time in 37 years, they found no cold pool.
Researchers found high concentrations of Pacific cod and walleye pollock in the northern Bering Sea. But the species that was supposed to be there, Arctic cod, was hardly found.
More than half the fish landed in U.S. waters come from the North Pacific, and most are caught in the Bering Sea. Chad See, executive director of the Freezer Longline Coalition, a trade association of vessels that target Pacific cod using baited lines, said members caught their quota last year but had to travel farther north.
“Does that mean that the stock is declining, is suffering because of the warming temperatures? Or is it that they’ve moved north and it’s still a vibrant fishery?” See said.
It’s too soon to conclude that atmosphere and ocean changes are due simply to climate change, said NOAA physical oceanographer Phyllis Stabeno, who has studied the Bering Sea for more than 30 years. The southern Bering Sea since 2000 has undergone multi-year stanzas of low and extensive ice, she said.
When sea ice in November began forming as usual, she expected a bounce-back this winter. Instead, warm winds in February mostly cleared the northern Bering Sea of sea ice through the Bering Strait into the Chukchi Sea.
“We’re in winter,” she said. “This is all supposed to be frozen.”
Formation of the cold pool is again in doubt. It could return in the future, but temperatures are trending upward with the rate of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.
Scientists say figuring out the ocean physics is far less of a challenge than projecting the biological ramifications.
“We sort of opened up this whole Pandora’s box of not really knowing how the ecosystem as a whole is going to adjust to that,” Danielson said.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service early last summer detected trouble. Resident called with reports of emaciated and dead seabirds.
Common murres, which can use up fat reserves and starve after three days without eating, fly hundreds miles to find fish schools or krill but were washing up dead on shore. Forktail storm petrels, fulmars, shearwaters, kittiwakes, auklets and puffins also died.
No one can say why. Seabird experts wonder whether the presence of more pollock and Pacific cod, which have voracious appetites and are far more efficient hunters of forage fish than seabirds, was a factor.
Dean Stockwell, a research associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a specialty in phytoplankton, said the ocean changes have the potential to affect plant life at the bottom of the food web but it’s too soon to know.
Of immediate concern is whether warmer water will allow harmful algae containing toxins to stay viable long enough for shellfish to eat them and pass toxins to marine mammals and people. Toxins are being carried to the Arctic, Stockwell said.
“The question with global warming types of things is, ‘Can it get a foothold? Can they do damage?'” he said.
Seabird experts wonder if toxins played a role in recent seabird deaths by affecting their ability to forage.
No one has connected the dots, said Britt, the NOAA fisheries biologist.
“At the moment, nobody’s sitting with in-hand a comprehensive research study that covers the birds and the mammals and the fish and the zooplankton all in one synthesized report,” he said, adding that it will take researchers more time to figure out what’s going on.
Meantime, Kotlik resident Keyes is researching climate change effects in her coastal village of 650 as project coordinator for a team working under a Bureau of Indian Affairs program.
The absence of sea ice since mid-February meant taking land routes to visit nearby villages, she said. And seal hunters this spring found bearded seals to harvest but not near the village.
Like the cod fishermen, “They had to go farther north,” Keyes said.

The next stop on our road trip was a super relaxing 3 days on Salt Spring Island!
The glum and rainy Tofino weather had seemingly spread over the whole of Vancouver Island. Only 180 kilometers / 110 miles in, on the north side of the island near Nanaimo, it finally started clearing up a bit. In the absence of cellphone reception in the interior part of Vancouver Island, Chantal chose Gabriel’s Cafe (39A Commercial St) in Nanaimo for lunch at the last-minute.
Gabriel’s Cafe works according to their “farm to fork” principle by sourcing their ingredients directly from local, small-scale family farms to be able to serve fresh, seasonal veggies, free-range eggs and pasture-fed, ethically-raised meats. They had excellent reviews on Tripadvisor, and Chantal said they had burgers, so we were definitely okay with the choice. On arrival at the restaurant, the window logo gave it away: those burgers turned out to be made from beans, rice, and corn… Consequently, as Chantal opted for the yummy wholewheat wrap filled with quinoa & chickpea fritters and topped with hummus, chutney & cucumber, the rest had Pulled pork (with North Carolina style tangy apple cider BBQ sauce) and Lemongrass braised beef sandwiches (with sriracha BBQ sauce and pickled vegetables) – which were excellent – and we enjoyed some good beers from Vancouver’s Steamworks Brewing and Victoria’s Phillips Brewing & Malting Co.
We tried to catch the ferry from Crofton to Vesuvius on Salt Spring Island of 3.35 pm and were there around 2.40 pm, but had to queue several hundred meters on the downhill road to the docks. Very annoying that no bookings were possible for this short crossing; it is operated on a first-come, first-serve basis. The person in front of us had inquired with a traffic controller who said that given the length of the queue we would probably only be able to board the ferry at 6.05 pm – so 2 ferries later.  He turned around and so we moved up again … The ferry of 3.35 pm came and left, but to our delight, more cars came off than we expected, so it was our turn immediately to line up for the next ferry, at 4.50 pm. Fortunately,  there was still some distraction while waiting with the marina on one side and the paper(pulp) factory of Catalyst on the other side, where ships were loaded with logs and small tugboats herded the logs towards the cranes.
After 8 hours in the car, and 24℃ / 75℉ by then, we were so happy that we arrived at our holiday home at The Cottages On Salt Spring Island (315 Robinson Rd), a couple of kilometers north of Ganges. It is a small park with about 40 separate multi-floor cottages/houses located on the bank of a small lake, equipped with a couple of jetties, and canoes, paddleboards, and rental bikes for the guests to use.
The kids were feeling so cramped from the long drive that they immediately wanted to go swimming (or at least avoid having to unload the car…) They soon realized that the lake was still pretty chilly 🙂
Besides 2 BBQs, there were no other culinary facilities, so you have to drive down to Ganges for groceries and restaurants. The first restaurant at the marina we tried (Moby’s Pub) was not a success because, after 7pm, no minors were allowed to be in the building. The second restaurant we tried, The Tree House Cafe, was far too busy also due to the live band on their patio, so so that we finally end up at next door’s burger bar, Burger Bar 537 (106 Purvis Ln). This time Chantal was convinced going there by the presence of burgers on the menu (the vegetarian Beyond Meat burger that is). The kids had the Classic Cheese Burger (Cheddar cheese, crispy lettuce, tomato & red onion) with extra thick-cut Bacon for, $17.50. I chose the Hangover Burger (Sunnyside up egg, bacon, and cheddar, crispy lettuce, tomato, and red onion; $21). The burgers were reasonably pricy, but very tasty, as were the onion rings that we subbed for the regular fries. In anticipation of the visit of the brewery the next day, we washed them down with the delicious IPAs of Salt Spring Island Ales.
After a good night’s sleep, we had early lunch at El Loco Taco (106 Lower Ganges Road), which is located in a cool former gas station/repair shop converted into a Mexican restaurant. There are indoor and outdoor seats for the take-out counter, but you also have a separate patio with service. It seems to be a popular place to grab some food before heading to the docks to catch one of the ferries back to Vancouver Island, as it went from super crowded to almost empty in just 15 minutes.
The food was delicious and the service, albeit a bit unorganized due to last-minute replacements for staff not showing up, but super friendly. We had some Chips and Salsa to figure out what to have. Chantal went for the Tofu Tacos with Cheese and Guacamole. Chicken quesadillas were chosen by the kids, and I opted for the Jalapeno Poppers and Chicken Taquitos. As the temperature was already quite high and the salsas fiery, we had some Tiger Shark APAs from Phillips Brewing Company in Victoria, BC to quench the heat.
In combination with the beautiful weather, we got a real “holiday feeling” from Salt Spring Island. It is small (only 27x14km / 17×9 miles, and only 10,000 inhabitants), laid back as well as back to basics (no traffic lights, one big supermarket, 2 gas stations, 4 ports and hardly any cell phone reception on the entire island), so you can take in the beautiful bucolic pastures, back roads, as well as the peaks up to 700 meters. Yet it was not particularly touristy, even in summer. Chantal had a theory that islanders already have some special pride, sense of self-sufficiency, and urge to prove themselves. As a consequence, there is relatively more craft and artisanal activity than on the mainland. I think that is correct for Salt Spring Island because you can see artisans and roadside stands almost everywhere. In addition to the standard abundant range of fruit, vegetables, and eggs, we have also seen figs, pesto, coffee beans, pork sausages and chops (in freezers) and horse manure (for the garden we hope) on offer.
That afternoon we visited Salt Spring Island Cheese (285 Reynolds Rd) for excellent ice cream, and incredibly tasty goat’s cheeses, Salt Spring Island Ales (270 Furness Rd) – the Heather Ale is stellar! – and Salt Spring Vineyards & Tasting Room (151 Lee Rd), after which we tested these local products, relaxing on our balcony. The good life!
The Salt Spring Saturday Market was held around Ganges’ Centennial Park and draws enormous crowds, even from Vancouver Island as a day trip! With almost 150 stalls, the offering was indeed very extensive: lots of snacking, stunning produce, and stalls with jewelry, clothing, handicrafts, and vegan products as well as a lot of CBD products. We were there around noon to have breakfast “on the go”, and it was quite busy.
The striking live musical accompaniment was a xylophone octet, but we suspected that the free-spirited dancers in the audience already had ingested some hemp products. There was also – a little further from the main route – the “artsy” corner with, among other things, stalls with stuff against menstrual pains and postcards with “Happy 1st Period” and one with Happy Vagina Products: bags, and purses with expected embroidery and stitching. No pictures, please!
Our hiking intentions on the east side of Salt Spring Island, in Ruckle Provincial Park (Beaver Point Rd), were nipped in the bud because the most beautiful part of the trail towards the cape with the lighthouse, turned out to be a “quarantine area”. The alternative route back over a campsite was not particularly appealing, so we went double-backed through the forest.
According to various sites, another recommendation was Mount Maxwell, a 600-meter high mountain, with impressive views of Salt Spring Island, Vancouver Island, and others of the Southern Gulf Islands. Several online reviews indicated that the road to the top was difficult to pass. That was undoubtedly true, so I was quite happy that in Vancouver, we had opted for our Yukon (a high-clearance 4WD) instead of the minivan because the holes in the road were so deep that ordinary cars could not go up up Mt Maxwell Rd without damage. They were able to stop halfway through and walk the last 2 kilometers, while SUVs, pick-ups, and Subarus (all standard 4x4s) made it to the top without too much of a hassle. Admittedly, with shaken kidneys (a video of it would have a high Cloverfield content), but the views were well worth it!
At the end of the afternoon, we bought another fancy soft-serve ice cream at Spring Island Soft Serve, one of the regular stands at the Ganges Marina. The mini Airstream trailer is super sleek, but I suspect it gets scorching in such a little metal egg in the full sun.
They only offer vegan soft serves made of oat milk or coconut milk (we weren’t able to really taste the difference to regular dairy soft serves!) available in cones or a Sundae cup. They have vanilla, chocolate, and – as we have already seen in Tofino – a swirl of both as the base and many tempting toppings. I had the Black Forest Cake Sundae: A swirl topped with intense Amarena Cherries, Black Cherry Syrup, and Chocolate Cookie Crumbles. Chantal went for the weekly featured Sundae, “Don’t Tell Mama”, a truly amazing one with Tumeric and Lime Elixer from Moonshine Mama’s, Calamansi Citrus, Ginger, and Oat Cookie Crumble.

Even though they were happy to let their Toltec underclass farm and raise food to them, the Aztecs were not about to give up their convenient and rewarding cannibalism. If you want reliable heavy lifter's who can find a piano moved readily for you, all you need to do is provide us a call. The transferred us on the hottest day in the history of San Francisco but you could not tell by the speed they worked at. The San Francisco General Hospital recently commissioned the construction of mini-parks for residents' enjoyment. Publisher: RobertsonTrevor The Journal of Clinical Chiropractic is another peer reviewed chiropractic journal useful for evidence based San Diego Chiropractors trying to give improved standards of practice. Building their experience with all the Unistar, International began to offer Fabco axles and transfer cases as factory options, since they do to the day. All in all, it was a positive experience. In addition to the employees who are serving in these businesses are well trained and skilled also. Our friends down the road, also authors, had a two-year-old who slept in a walk-in closet.
Why would anybody in their right mind desire to bust their back relocating their own possessions. This probably explains why his cd's aren't as encouraged as most. They were effective. Usually the final cost is way above estimate, but these guys were pretty much right in there. Habee, I know. I have three going at this time. You also have to figure out your departure and also receive a place to reside. When I got to the counter, I happened for Todd, a manager of the LAX Hertz counter. Because we do not use agents or sub-contractors and have invested years studying and serving this particular market; we are able to supply clients with the maximum level of quality service available in the industry today. This is second time we are using this moving business in San Francisco and the two of the times were lucky I guess. How does Locke, the only rural Chinese village remaining outside of SF, fit into this list? Golden Gate Movers is the premier piano moving business in California. I'd absolutely work with Jerry and his merry movers again! The Shelby was a complete blast to drive, and other than being somewhat stiff in the suspension arena for my spouse, the GT350H was a perfect car for a Southern California job week. Gather everything from every little area, mainly because you do not want the moving business being forced to dig around for additional items. China Neck and Neck With Silicon Valley In Showcasing Auto Tech at CES
After years of predictions that Chinese technology companies were coming to America, the lineup at this years CES showed that theyre finally here.
Of the 4,500 exhibitors at the annual event — a global stage to showcase the latest developments in consumer electronics — more than a third are from China, according to statistics provided by the organizer. Thats more than any other nation except the U.S., home to the annual gathering in Las Vegas, and even Americans only outnumbered Chinas 1,551 exhibitors by about 50 companies.
The biggest gadget show on the planet has become a key stomping ground for Chinese startups, especially makers of autonomous and electric vehicles, as they seek to disrupt the global passenger-car industry with new technology and woo investors. The nations Tesla Inc.-wannabes are not yet household names, but theyre aspiring to make significant inroads in the race to grab a slice of the worlds biggest vehicle market — and beyond.
China is seeking to move away from being the worlds factory floor for sneakers, apparel and toys to become a maker of robots, bullet trains and commercial planes under President Xi Jinpings “Made in China 2025” master plan. Xi wants to accelerate the modernization of the worlds second-biggest economy to one that resembles that of Japan or Germany — two automotive heavyweights.
$45,000 SUV With Smartphones Ease Shows China Ambitions
“China is moving very fast in the areas of artificial intelligence and connectivity, much faster than Europe and even a bit faster than U.S.,” said Carsten Breitfeld, chief executive officer of Nanjing-based Byton, which unveiled a $45,000 SUV at the event. “In some years from now, the hot spot to showcase those technologies will not be in Las Vegas, but in Shanghai.
The vehicle introduced by Byton, which it calls a Smart Intuitive Vehicle, features facial recognition to unlock doors, gesture control and a 49-inch dashboard screen, promising increased productivity during commutes.
The strong attendance by Chinese firms — which included 482 exhibitors from Shenzhen alone — is also the result of the Chinese governments massive push to develop self-driving technologies to help reduce traffic accidents and ease congestion. Authorities have laid out a strategic vision for half of the new cars in the market to have different levels of autonomy by 2020.
Here are some of the other Chinese startups on display at CES to have on your radar:
Chinese self-driving truck developer TuSimple Inc. brought a prototype built with U.S.-based Peterbilt Motors Co. Armed with Nvidia Corp. software, chip and a set of sensors aided by 11 cameras, the truck can operate without almost any human intervention, according to the company.
Horizon Robotics, backed by funds from Intel Corp., showcased an autonomous General Motors Co. GMC Yukon XL that uses the startups proprietary chip and software.
Robosense.ai, a Shenzhen-based Chinese maker of Lidar (a technology like radar, but one that uses laser light pulses to calculate distances), unveiled its first solid-state laser radar thats seeking to take on U.S. counterparts like Velodyne and Quanergy.
Guangzhou-based XPeng Motors, backed by money from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., unveiled its first production model G3 — an electric SUV with a rooftop 360-degree camera and a styling that reflects a “geek” lifestyle, according to the company.

Paul Hayden Kirk: Architect of Puget Sound style
Tumblr media
Kirk was a master architect working in stone, wood, and glass
Like many of his contemporary modernists working in the Pacific Northwest, architect Paul Hayden Kirk had a particular affinity for the landscape, and the way the region's thick forests and rugged coasts left nooks and crannies ideal for architectural expression.
He tended to take this passion very seriously; one homeowner said that during construction, he helped dig the basement by hand, so as not to disturb any of the nearby trees.
Kirk's designs for the Puget Sound, exuding a style he called sculptural, muscular, and flamboyant, helped define and promote the Northwest Regional brand of modernism. Kirk frequently appeared in architecture magazines of the era and he may have been one of its largest contemporary proponents.
Like many of the other designers of his era, he saw the value of modernism, but only if it was imbued with a sense of place. The International Style, he declared, was an architecture imposed on the land by man. His works, delicate designs in stone, wood, and glass, were meant to accentuate, not ameliorate, what was already there.

The house's entrance is at the far end of the covered walk, which is partially enclosed with opaque glass panels. Large Pacific Madrone trees lining the walkway.
Biography
Kirk was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and came to Seattle with his family in 1922. During his childhood, he contracted polio, which may have informed his later focus on medical buildings. He grew up with an eye towards design; both of his parents worked as interior designers. Kirk chose to study at the University of Washington, where he would learn from the influential Lionel Pries, an inspiration to many of the region's mid-century designers. By 1939, Kirk had established his own practice.
Kirk would cycle through a number of partnerships in the '40s, including designing homes for his brother Blair, a contractor, before going solo again in the '50s. Early in his career, beginning in 1941, he helped design the Columbia Ridge Housing Development. Due to a limited budget, Kirk was forced to work simply and modestly, a condition that writer David Rash suggests may have helped push him towards a more modern approach.
In the '50s, as Kirk again worked by himself, he would refine his own pared-down style, with lots of exposed structural elements, local materials, and regional cultural influences, including inspiration from Native American longhouses and elements of Japanese architecture, such as shoji screens. The aesthetic becomes clear in buildings like his 1955 University Unitarian Church, which featured dramatic exposed-wood trusses and local materials like cedar shingles.
This was a time when the architectural world was focused on the Pacific Northwest; the 1953 AIA national convention in Seattle; and Architectural Record's April 1953 issue focused on the region, including an article entitled Have We an Indigenous Northwest Architecture? improved the visibility of Kirk and his contemporaries.
Kirk's practice was growing, focused on both award-winning homes, such as the Dowell House- which was named one of the city's best modern designs, and later renovated by Tom Kundig-and commercial projects, especially medical offices. Kirk would even write a book on the subject, and his 1948 Crown Hill Medical Clinic received numerous accolades. From 1960 until his retirement in 1978, he was a partner in Kirk, Wallace, McKinley and Associates, where he worked on larger commissions for churches, universities, and even an IBM office in Spokane.

A house designed by Paul Hayden Kirk.
Buildings to know
The Magnolia Branch of the Seattle Public Library, which opened in 1963, showcases Kirk's light touch and affinity for Japanese techniques. There, a grid of exposed wood and timber framing supports a series of glass panels and clerestories that bathe the interior in light. Originally, Kirk's thematic ideas were further reinforced with original furniture by mid-century craftsman George Nakashima. It was recently renovated by SHKS Architects.
Another Kirk gem, completed in collaboration with Victor Steinbrueck, is the University of Washington Faculty Club. Suspended above the hillside on steel beams, the posh meeting hall exuded a confident, contemporary air, replacing a former log structure from the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition with clean, contemporary lines and floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Despite Kirk's penchant for using local materials-the interior is lined with locally sourced wood-he showed he could also excel at designing a more straightforward, streamlined International Style structure.
Legacy and reputation today
Kirk has long been an inspiration to architects in Seattle and beyond, and his is a name dropped constantly by local homebuyers seeking midcentury design. When the city's AIA chapter began awarding an annual Medal of Honor in 1984, Kirk was one of the first in line to receive the award. His homes are still sought after by local midcentury design connoisseurs, with a cliffside home in Magnolia, Washington, going for $3.5 million last year.
