why do u think that turkey in hetalia wears a mask? (yeah I know I joked about it being a jojo reference cuz there's a city in turkey called kars and the villain kars from jojo has a stone mask, it looks much different from turkey's)
but for real
some say it's to cover up a scar, but he doesn't seem to have any scars?
maybe it's to appear cool and to be recognizable? to appear mysterious?
or maybe, in the past, he was very war-like, and in battle, he'd cover his eyes so his enemies wouldn't see his eye movements and thus, they'd be unable to predict what he'd do?
is it some sort of an anime trope?
orrrrr himaruya simply heard something about atatürk's mask, a monument in turkey that commemorates the founder/first president of the turkish republic but had no idea what the monument actually was and thought "ok I'ma give this character a mask" maybe hima's original idea was "the character's mask represents the monument" or "it was a gift" but later forgot that idea and drew the character with the mask during ottoman times cuz he began associating turkey with the mask

Rocket man
Today is Remembrance Sunday in the UK. Remembrance Sunday is a solemn occasion observed in the United Kingdom to honour and remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty, particularly in the two World Wars, but also in subsequent conflicts. It is observed on the second Sunday in November, which is the Sunday closest to Armistice Day (November 11), marking the end of World War I in 1918.
Today is a significant day in Turkey as well, because it marks the anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Atatürk passed away on November 10, 1938, at 9:05 AM, and this moment is commemorated every year with a national day of remembrance.
Every year, at exactly 9:05 AM on November 10th, a one-minute silence is observed across Turkey in honour of Ataturk. This moment marks the time of his death and is a moment for the entire nation to reflect on his legacy and contributions to the country. Similarly, one of the most poignant aspects of Remembrance Sunday is the two-minute silence that takes place at 11:00 AM. This silence commemorates the exact time the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, effectively ending the First World War. The silence is observed across the country and in other Commonwealth nations, offering a time of reflection and respect for those who have given their lives in service.
This morning I woke up early and went for a walk around central London. When I arrived The Cenotaph in Whitehall, I sat down on the pavement where I could see the cenotaph and I stayed silent for a half an hour and so. I did not check my phone. I was listening to my playlist on Spotify while reflecting on people who dedicated their lives to their countries. History is shaped by the priorities and agendas of the national curriculum. In Turkey, history teachers do not mention that Ataturk was a dictator for instance. Or we did not talk about Armenians. Like at all. Or Britain’s colonial past is not taught as a compulsory component of the history education under the disguise that topics within statutory themes are chosen by schools and teachers. Every country bolsters their victories and undermines their wrongdoings while teaching history. Then it is only inevitable to raise racist and xenophobic generations – who are biased as their default settings. And it is no surprise politicians to use these already biased groups for their benefits at any time in history.
World War I is a different story for Turkish people and British people. Effects of it was radically different than one another so it is no surprise that it is taught, understood and remembered differently. Being a curious immigrant puts you in a position where you have to read and understand both sides and have impartial perspective in the end. You learn to pay your tribute to both countries and people sacrificed their lives equally, regardless of the result of the war. This morning I was there to remember Ataturk & the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty for the UK. Ataturk’s rather complex legacy haunted Turkey, always creeping back into Turkish people’s thoughts. I suitably remembered Ataturk today with Churchill’s quote:
"He was a remarkable man, and in the history of the world there are few who have left a more enduring mark. His leadership was at times dictatorial, but it was what his country needed in those desperate years."
I wiped away my tears. The next song was Rocket Man by Elton John. All people dedicated their lives to their countries and all immigrants; they share one thing in common: They are not the men people think they are at home.

Magic of Turkish Festivals: A Journey Through Culture and Tradition
Turkey, a nation where East meets West, boasts a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. This vibrant blend is beautifully reflected in its numerous festivals, each offering a unique window into the country's soul. From religious holidays steeped in spiritual significance to lively folk celebrations and modern cultural events, Turkey's festivals promise an unforgettable experience for every visitor.
Embracing Religious Traditions: Kurban Bayramı and Şeker Bayramı
Turkish Islamic holidays hold immense importance for the nation's predominantly Muslim population. Kurban Bayramı, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Celebrated after the Hajj pilgrimage, it's a time for families to gather, share special meals, and donate meat to the less fortunate. Şeker Bayramı, or the Sugar Feast, marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Characterized by exchanging sweets and visiting loved ones, it's a joyous occasion overflowing with sweet treats and vibrant decorations.
Celebrating National Pride: Cumhuriyet Bayramı
Every year on October 29th, Turkey erupts in a fervor of national pride as the country commemorates Cumhuriyet Bayramı, or Republic Day. This momentous occasion marks the anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. Grand parades, vibrant street decorations, and heart-stirring performances pay homage to the nation's rich history and the legacy of its founding father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Welcoming Spring: Hıdırellez
As winter loosens its grip and spring awakens the land, Turkey comes alive with the joyous festivities of Hıdırellez. Celebrated on May 6th, this ancient festival marks the meeting of Prophet Hızır (Khizar) and Elias (Elijah). It's a time for welcoming new beginnings, fertility, and abundance. People tie colorful wishes onto trees, prepare special foods, and participate in lively gatherings, all while basking in the beauty of the blossoming spring.
A Whirling Dervish Ceremony: A Spiritual Experience
Beyond the festivities, Turkish festivals also offer a glimpse into the country's profound spiritual traditions. The Mevlana Whirling Dervishes Ceremony, held in Konya, is a mesmerizing spectacle. This ritualistic dance by Sufi dervishes embodies their journey towards spiritual perfection through love and devotion. The twirling white robes and rhythmic music create a truly captivating atmosphere.
A Celebration of Cinema: The International Istanbul Film Festival
Turkey's cultural scene flourishes not just with traditional events but also with modern extravaganzas. The International Istanbul Film Festival is a premier event that attracts international acclaim. Held annually, it showcases a diverse selection of films from around the world, providing a platform for cultural exchange and artistic appreciation.

19 Mayıs Atatürk’ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı'mız kutlu olsun!
Today is May 19, Atatürk's Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day (19 Mayıs Atatürk’ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı) in Turkey. It commemorates Atatürk's arrival to Samsun via boat from Bandırma (across the Black Sea) in 1919. This date is also considered the beginning of the War of Independence, and Atatürk's symbolic birthday.
It was first celebrated in 1926 as Day of Veterans (Gazi Günü) in Samsun, before being officialized in 1935 as Atatürk Day. The latter was a venture of the Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club (BJK) in Fenerbahçe Stadium in Istanbul, with participation from Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray soccer players. Later during a Sports Congress(?), one of BJK's founders suggested dedicating this day to all youth, under the name "19 May Youth and Sports Festival". This motion was voted in, and with Atatürk's approval, turned into law in June 1938. After the 12 September 1980 coup, "Atatürk's Commemoration" was added to the festival's name.
This day is celebrated countrywide with sports events, parades and other ceremonies. The path of a giant Turkish flag, bearing the inscription "From Youth, with Love of Atatürk, to the President" ("Gençlikten Atatürk Sevgisiyle Cumhurbaşkanına") and named the "Love Flag" (Sevgi Bayrağı) is possibly the most significant tradition. It follows the Path of Independence (Kurtuluş Yolu), Atatürk's route in 1919 within Samsun, from Tütün İskelesi (the dock where he landed) to the Veteran (Gazi) Museum (formerly the hotel where he stayed for six days), alongside the mayor of Samsun. Then it's handed over to young athletes, who carry it through nine cities, starting with Amasya (still following Atatürk's route), to Ankara where it's given to the President of the Republic.
