#OTD in 1922 – The Provisional Government of the Irish Free State bombards the Four Courts in Dublin, and the Civil War begins.
On 14 April 1922 a column of 200 men led by Rory O’Connor occupied the Four Courts, hoping to provoke an armed confrontation with British forces which were in the process of evacuating from Ireland following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty the previous winter which had split the IRA into two opposing factions. The occupation was a direct challenge to the legitimacy of the Provisional…

Quote
War is hell, but that's not the half of it, because war is mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love. War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a man; war makes you dead. The truths are contradictory. It can be argued, for instance, that war is grotesque. But in truth war is also beauty. For all its horror, you can't help but gape at the awful majesty of combat. You stare out at tracer rounds unwinding through the dark like brilliant red ribbons. You crouch in ambush as a cool, impassive moon rises over the nighttime paddies. You admire the fluid symmetries of troops on the move, the great sheets of metal-fire streaming down from a gunship, the illumination rounds, the white phosphorus, the purply orange glow of napalm, the rocket's red glare. It's not pretty, exactly. It's astonishing. It fills the eye. It commands you. You hate it, yes, but your eyes do not. Like a killer forest fire, like cancer under a microscope, any battle or bombing raid or artillery barrage has the aesthetic purity of absolute moral indifference - a powerful, implacable beauty - and a true war story will tell the truth about this, though the truth is ugly. To generalize about war is like generalizing about peace. Almost everything is true. Almost nothing is true.

Andrew Balding & Sandown trial winner Bangkok looks like a useful Derby candidate, but the Derby urgently needs John Erden's Too Darn Hot or Charlie Appleby's Line of Duty to drop Derby at the Dante Stakes in York on Thursday
There is no evidence that gamblers are deposing on gambling on the Derby by the domination v an O & # 39; Brien, but Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield admitted: & # 39; We urgently need a good British Dante winner to brighten up the build of the Dante the Derby. & # 39;
O & # 39; Brien is a 1-2 battle to win the race (2001) and High Chaparral (2002) – both of which have previously won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial
Broome was sewn by the jockey Donnacha O & # 39; Brien with three fronts but stood well at the top at the end of the 10-fold trial.
The trainer added: & # 39; He has much more speed than you think.
The only classical foal that can certainly combine with the O & # 39; Brien army is the Persian king of André Fabre. He will remain on his side of the English Channel for the time being after his anticipated victory in the French 2000 Guineas yesterday,

It was a seventh victory in the race for Fabre, who said that tilting at the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club) would be the next command of Persian king in Chantilly on June 2 instead of a shot at St James & Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Persian king is the only pair d that the better O & # 39; Brien & # 39; s has received 2000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia – he struck him in the fall Stakes at Newmarket in October when Circus Maximus came in third.
The mountain of Pierre-Charles Boudot, who had been sent the 1-2 favorite, was not as flashy as most expected in beating Shaman a length with Roger Varian-trained 28-1, San Donato shot third.
But Fabre put it down on the heavy ground on the Paris trail. The trainer added: & # 39; He has a great action and the ground didn't help. I have shown courage and consistency. He is a game horse. He is in all major races but the Prix of the Jockey Club is very tempting. He looks like he will stay another quarter of a mile. & # 39;
The Persian king bears the side of Sheik Mohammed of Godolphin, his half owners. Godolphin completed a French Guineas dime when Castle Lady won the 1,000 Guineas for trainer Henri-Alex Pantall and jockey Mickael Barzalona
Great Britain once again came third with Kevin Ryan-trained east
