The bears have gone to do something in the woods. Flip the Frog in Spooks (1932)

1) Technique section:

The Flip the Frog series was created and published only in black & white. Techno-Cracked, a 1933 Celebrity Productions, Inc. film, may have been shot in Cinecolor, according to some. In 1932, the same year that Technicolor started transitioning away from its two-color method in favour of their new three-strip process, a new two-color process called Cinecolor was introduced. With his ComiColor Cartoon series, Iwerks would later utilise Cinecolor extensively.

This animation was done with a traditional animation. It is a technique in which each frame is drawn by hand since during this time there were no computer animation yet.

To more accurately match the animation to the audio, a preliminary soundtrack, often known as a scratch track, is recorded. It is nearly always simpler to synchronise animation to an existing soundtrack than it is to synchronise an existing soundtrack to conventional animation because of how slowly traditional animation is generated.

2) Representation section:

Flip and his horse seek cover during a nocturnal downpour. In a strong gust, a dilapidated shack vanishes. They slog their way up a hill, where they happen upon a mansion that is inhabited by insane skeletons and have a series of adventures.

The classic haunted house tales have a lot in common with Spooks. With Flip having to deal with a full departure from reality, and in the end, even his horse is lost to the odd skeleton world, it's a little more akin to The Rocky Horror Picture Show in this instance.

3) Reception section:

Dean & Son Ltd. published a Flip the Frog Annual in 1932 in England. It was created by Wilfred Haughton, who also created the original Mickey Mouse Annuals for Deans, and was published "by special arrangement with Ub Iwerks, The Originator of The Film Character, Flip the Frog." Due to the failure of Flip, which ended in 1933, and the Annual, it only had one edition. In the years that followed, Flip was mostly forgotten by the general public.

Personally, I believe the shows are very nicely created for that era. The humors and technicality were enjoyable to watch. Animating a skeleton traditionally by hand was very hard, but they did it amazingly.
