Sataura Monae Redefines Realness and Femininity in "Uncle Luke"
youtube
Sataura Monae is here to make her mark, and her latest single, Uncle Luke, is a bold anthem that unapologetically celebrates real women embracing their complexity. With a deep, gritty voice that commands attention, Monae tells a story that is as raw as it is empowering. The song is an ode to being unapologetically yourself—a faithful wife, a nurturing mother, a scholar, and, yes, still a bad bitch.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in the Chad Brown projects of Providence, Rhode Island, Monae’s journey to artistry is deeply personal. She started writing poems at just 10 years old as an escape from abuse and isolation, and her transition to rapping became a way to channel her pain into power. Uncle Luke is the culmination of years of self-expression, grit, and perseverance, reflecting her journey from black sheep to undeniable force in the hip-hop world.
A Song That Balances Grit and Playfulness "I’m kind of wild, I like to get loud, like every black girl that’s living."
With lines like these, Sataura Monae grabs your attention, unapologetically owning her identity as a black woman with a voice and presence that refuses to be silenced. The lyrics are both cheeky and empowering, balancing a playful edge with moments of raw vulnerability.
The chorus hits with a swagger that’s impossible to ignore: "I be in house coochie, no hoes you ain't Uncle Luke, I be in house coochie, only want me fucking on you, baby."
It’s bold, it’s catchy, and it flips the narrative on traditional tropes of womanhood in hip-hop. Monae challenges expectations, celebrating the duality of being a devoted partner while still owning her individuality and sensuality.
Visuals That Bring the Lyrics to Life The self-directed video, with cinematography by Alger "King Al Hefner" Johnson, takes viewers into Monae’s world—a space that’s equal parts intimate and electric. The video starts in a house where Monae, dressed provocatively, shares moments with her man, highlighting her sultry yet grounded energy. Her deep connection to the lyrics and her confidence make each frame magnetic.
As the video progresses, the scene transitions to Monae and her friends dancing and vibing in the same house. The energy is infectious, blending playfulness with empowerment. The chemistry is undeniable as Monae’s man and his crew join the fun, creating a scene that feels authentic and celebratory. The warm, gritty tones of the cinematography, coupled with the switch between intimate close-ups and dynamic group shots, pull viewers into the vibrant energy of the moment.
The Inspiration Behind "Uncle Luke" Monae shared that her inspiration for the video comes from real women—women who juggle being faithful wives, outstanding mothers, career-driven achievers, and unapologetic individuals. She represents a generation of women who defy stereotypes and thrive in their complexity.
"I wanted to bring light back to real women out here doing real things," says Monae. "Being real faithful wives but still a bad bitch. An outstanding mom but still a bad bitch. Graduate from college, top of my class in medical school—yup, I’m a nerd but still a bad bitch."
Her words reflect a movement, a celebration of multidimensional women who refuse to fit into a single box.
A Rising Star from Providence, Rhode Island Providence may be a small city, but Sataura Monae is proof that big dreams can emerge from humble beginnings. Growing up in the Chad Brown projects, she honed her street smarts and combined them with the book smarts she picked up in Ohio. Her journey to becoming an artist is a testament to resilience, talent, and determination.
With Uncle Luke, Monae sets the stage for her rise as a voice for real women everywhere—raw, unapologetic, and full of life.

Did my very first tattoo on myself today using a machine I built! Far from perfect but I’m ecstatic! Had to be some sort of walk-in type symbol so I chose an Unalome. Contorting myself was much more painful than the actual tattoo.

…….
A whole hearted thank you.
Recently, a few of my works were included in a dynamically stacked exhibition entitled “Sequence” which was curated by the artist Christine D’Epiro Abbott for @ohioartscouncil @riffegallery.
The exhibition, which includes the work of 14 amazing Ohio based artists aims to showcase and celebrate the diversity inherent to the field of contemporary printmaking.
My contributions to this show included two installations and a print-based frame. animation. The installation and animation documented here were bespoke for this show and have never been shown before.
I want to very publicly thank @cdepiroabbott and @riffegallery for including me in this impressive show. It is an honor and a privilege.
Sequence is open until July 5th at the Riffe Gallery after which it will be traveling to the Medici Museum in Warren, OH.
please check it out if you are able. You will not be disappointed.
surest of sure good times!

Francesca Woodman, “Untitled (Rome), 1977-8, Gelatin silver print (image via Columbus Museum of Art)

Four Gelatin silver prints by Diane Arbus

Two of Cindy Sherman’s “Film Stills”, Gelatin silver prints from the 1970s
Tumblr media
Francesca Woodman’s “Italy”, 1977-1978 (printed later) Gelatin silver print
Currently on view at Columbus Museum of Art is Arbus • Sherman • Woodman: American Photography from the 1960s and 1970s. Although many of these photographs by Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman and Francesca Woodman are well known, it’s great to see the work of these three exceptional artists in person. The black and white images still captivate, even in our current image saturated world.
About the show from the museum-
This selection of monochromatic prints reflects a shared interest in capturing the world outside oneself as well as the world within. Perspective is an elemental link between each work: the images speak to how we see ourselves as individuals, how we are perceived, and how we observe others.
While Arbus was known for photographing families, children, pedestrians, performers, and celebrities, both Sherman and Woodman turned the camera on themselves. Dressing as anonymous female film characters from the 1950s and 1960s, Sherman poses in the series “Untitled Film Stills”. However, these works are not considered self-portraits, but rather carefully constructed performances of various female identities. Conversely, Woodman’s surrealist images might be called non-traditional self-portraits. By obscuring, blurring, or cropping parts of herself out of the final image, the photographs become intimate, personal snapshots that reflect a wider human fragility.
Arbus, Sherman, and Woodman are considered among the most prominent twentieth-century photographers and remain influential to contemporary artists today. By including aspects of feminism in their work and pushing the limits of the medium, these women challenged societal norms of their time while contributing to the elevation of photography as an art form.
It’s always interesting to hear artists discuss each other’s work. Included in the exhibition is this quote by Cindy Sherman about Francesca Woodman-
“She had few boundaries and made art out of nothing: empty rooms with peeling wallpaper and just her figure. No elaborate stage set-up or lights… Her process struck me more the way a painter works, making do with what’s right in front of her, rather than photographers like myself who need time to plan out what they’re going to do.”
For more on Francesca Woodman, her short life, and her artistic family, The Woodmans is an excellent documentary.

Just wanted to say thank you for a great weekend at @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo! I got so much good feedback from customers on my queer + disability representation and complements on my painting! I only met 1 person who already followed me here, so it was great exposure. Hopefully over the rest of the year we will continue to grow and try new things (and finish my setup 😅) but I’m so thankful to the staff and everyone who made it not anxiety central for someone like me who suffers multiple health conditions and has just mostly gotten over agoraphobia!
Tumblr media
I also had to get my compulsory frog plushie for surviving™️ and finally got a bag from LovePain&Stitches! All in all I’m happy and proud of myself for pushing through to be there. (And can we also get a petition in Pittsburgh going to open a Bibibop chain??? New Ohio comfort food 🥺)
Thanks Columbus!!! #odditiesandcuriosities #queerartistsofinstagram #frogplushie #artshows

78 Miles and 500,000 Knots of Twine Are Billowing Above Downtown Columbus
Floating above downtown Columbus, Ohio, is a new sculpture by artist Janet Echelman. Titled Current, the massive soft fiber installation spans 229 feet long and stretches 126 feet in the air at its highest point. It appears as an abstract cloud hovering over Gay and High Streets. At the right angle, it has an almost iridescent effect that makes the experience of walking through the city unexpectedly magical.
Echelman created the sculpture using 78 miles of twine and constructed it using more than 500,000 knots. This makes it the longest piece of public art in Columbus, and the artist’s first permanent sculpture to be suspended over a street.
