Hi! Yes, I actually have. I'm really sorry you are going through this.

I don't talk about this much, but when I was in college, I started using alcohol to cope with the trauma of my then-partner raping me. It got really out of control and I was drinking all the time, stealing alcohol from peoples' rooms, carrying a water bottle full of clear vodka with me everywhere, constantly blacking out and having drunk sex with strangers, etc. I ended up in the ER from alcohol poisoning multiple times across a few months and was very close to dying several times.
Things are a lot better for me now but it was hell. I did attend mandated outpatient counseling for several months in an all-women's group and that helped, but if that's something you want to try, I'd recommend researching different aspects of the group first. For me, it was helpful to feel less alone and to connect with others about shared experiences, although most of the women were much older than me so it was hard to relate to them sometimes.
Some substance use support groups are closed (same people attend each time for a set time); others are open (anyone can join); some are mixed-gender, some are for individuals of one gender, etc. Nowadays there are more and more groups for LGBTQUIA+ folks, BIPOC folks, women, etc. I attended one AA meeting once (not sure what substance(s) you're struggling with) and it was absolutely not for me, although it works for others. SMART Recovery Groups, the few of which I attended, seemed a lot less focused on religion and less focused on "deficits," to me personally at least.
You can easily find a virtual support group or an in-person one any day of the week at all times if you do a Google search.
Some groups ask for participants to remain abstinent throughout the duration of their participation in the group. Honestly, that can be really hard. I'm sure there are more flexible groups out there if that's something that's hard for you, if you want to attend a group.
What also helped me, to be honest, was going through my Master of Social Work graduate program and learning more about substance use during the program. I learned a lot about neuroscience as it relates to addiction, cravings, dependence, withdrawal, and tolerance, and I also learned about different models of substance use, including harm reduction models. This actually helped me feel a lot more comfortable publicly identifying as someone in recovery, which lessened the stigma and shame I felt, although I still feel a lot of it.
Also, maybe you could look into peer recovery services? These are services, including peer recovery coaching, where you work one-on-one with a peer who is in recovery. There's still a power differential of course, but it's less of a power-imbalanced relationship than one between a counselor and a client or a psychiatrist and a patient, for example.
A red flag for me is if a program or group uses the language of "alcoholic" or "addict" because, and this is just my personal opinion, it reduces someone's identity to their substance use and is pejorative. But for other people, that language might work for them. But language is a big indicator to me whether I think a program or service would be a good fit for me.
Finally, if you are in college, some colleges have Collegiate Recovery Programs. These are programs on campuses that provide peer recovery support through campus culture. It can be helpful to people surrounded by other students who are drinking or using drugs. The one at my grad school offers a TON of events for members, pizza parties, sober tailgating, weekly meetings, and even roadtrips.

Rosen Zhelyazkov to be elected chairman of the 49th National Assembly. If the parliament works for more than 3 months, it is possible to have a rotation based on a gentleman's agreement between GERB-SDS and We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria. This was agreed upon by the two largest parliamentary political formations after the series of meetings on the legislative program of the 49th Parliament.
While Rosen Zhelyazkov is the chairman of the National Assembly, the chairman of the legal commission will be from the Parliament Group of the WCC-DB. He will be nominated after a discussion of the leadership of the coalition.
If there is a rotation, the chairman of the legal committee will also be replaced.
The two largest parliamentary parties have prepared a common list of bills that they will propose to the other political forces. They concern the reforms under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone and Schengen, the bills for changes to the Civil Procedure Code, the Anti-Corruption Commission and protection from domestic violence.
"Tomorrow we expect that there will be an elected Speaker (Chairman) of the National Assembly, so that it will start regular work. The list of bills will be proposed as a program of this session of the Parliament, and if it works successfully, after three months there will be an opportunity to rotate the Speaker of the National Assembly, so that, together with the chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs, they work in sync and can adopt the rest of the bills," said Nikolay Denkov from WCC-DB.
The legislative program will also be presented to the other parliamentary political forces in search of support, as well as a constitutional majority for judicial reform.
Government negotiations have not been conducted within the working group.
Nikolay Denkov, WCC-DB: "Our answer has always been clear and categorical - at this table we only discuss our legislative program, we do not discuss the formation of a government. We do not have such a mandate given to us by our national authorities and the formation of a government is a matter of talks between party leaders rather than a legislative task force".
Desislava Atanasova, GERB-SDS: "Realizing that these efforts are part of a larger process and a longer path, but also taking into account that colleagues have decisions of their national bodies regarding a future government, we categorically declare that now the most important thing is our country and we appeal for the constructive tone and dialogue to continue, so that the main mission of every parliament is fulfilled - to broadcast a working regular government".
Nikolay Denkov, WCC-DB: "We are finishing this stage, with which the National Assembly will start. Hopefully tomorrow morning and then all the talks start about everything else - committees, changing members of regulators and government, but that government is the responsibility of the mandate holder and he has to decide how he will approach it. We have a decision of our national councils that we will not support a government with the first mandate. It has not been changed. We will discuss it again, but I do not believe there will be any changes to this position. The question is, is there another workable build that could work. It is too early to discuss this issue today."
Desislava Ananasova, GERB-SDS: "Dialogue is extremely necessary and it seems to me that 2 months ago, 2 years ago, no one imagined that we would be able to sit at a table and conduct this dialogue for the sake of some common goal. The tone is constructive, collegial and expert. In this sense, we will make every effort for a regular government."
Desislava Atanasova from GERB-SDS clarified that leadership talks are yet to come. She again defended the position of GERB-SDS that without a working cabinet there should be no budget.
"We are convinced that there should be a regular government that approves its own budget and implements through this budget the policies on which there is an agreement for a certain period of time," she explained.

Center for Students in Recovery Celebrates 20th Anniversary, Moves to New Campus Location
The Center for Students in Recovery (CSR) is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, having been established in 2004. CSR also recently relocated to the Student Services Building.
Initially founded under University Health Services, CSR began by providing small, support-group style meetings in borrowed classrooms around campus. CSR’s initial plan provided activities founded on the principle of peer-to-peer recovery support and the successful practice of connecting individuals in recovery to support one another outside of a clinical setting.
It quickly became evident that CSR needed its own space to effectively provide support. CSR relies on several key components to encourage a well-rounded recovery experience: working a program of recovery, social engagement and service. To integrate these components, CSR moved into the basement of the Steve Hicks School of Social Work in 2009.
Based on the success of CSR at UT Austin in 2012, the UT System Office of Academic Affairs secured funding to establish Centers for Students in Recovery at all academic institutions within the UT System, making it the first system in the nation to broadly support such an initiative.
Within the first two years of the expansion effort, many campuses had a dedicated staff member overseeing a small but growing collegiate recovery center, complete with weekly meetings and a social media presence. In January 2014, CSR moved into Bellmont Hall, further enhancing its mission of creating and sustaining a thriving community through programming and outreach.
CSR welcomed its current director, Lilly Ettinger, in July 2022. Prior to joining CSR, Ettinger served as the director of the Beauchamp Addiction Recovery Center at Baylor University.
As someone in recovery, Ettinger has been involved in collegiate recovery since 2011, beginning her work in the field as a graduate student. She has held various roles at Baylor University, including, founding student, graduate student, support specialist, program coordinator, and director for the recovery program. In 2020, she received the National Collegiate Recovery Staff Member of the Year Award from the Association for Recovery in Higher Education, where she also serves on the advisory board and co-wrote ethical guidelines for collegiate recovery staff.
"We know that alcohol and substance use are incredibly common reasons for why people end up leaving college without a degree,” Ettinger said. “Collegiate Recovery supports students being able to return to an environment that is otherwise not socially accommodating to students who have struggled with addiction.”
Ettinger noted that students in recovery face unique challenges when returning to campus, including managing a class schedule, work responsibilities, and prioritizing their recovery supports.
“Collegiate recovery programs like CSR support that in an effective way,” Ettinger said. “We bridge the gap between academic and recovery support, provide the environment for social support, and increase belonging not only among our students, but also among their peers.”
This summer, as CSR continued to celebrated its 20th anniversary, they moved to its new home in the Student Services Building (2.106C). This move places CSR alongside Healthyhorns, SHIFT and many other wellness adjacent departments and programs.
“We’ve got a cozy new location, and we’re excited about what it means for us,” Ettinger said. “The new location is allowing us to host two after-hours meetings this fall for the first time in a long part of CSR’s history. We’re hopeful that being a bit more central to campus, and in a space known for focusing on wellness, will make it easier for students to drop in between classes and make the center more of a home base.”
Richie King is the senior program coordinator at CSR. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Gender Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is currently pursuing an MSSW at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work. At CSR, Richie is responsible for community outreach and providing peer support to students in recovery and those seeking recovery. He specializes in program development and management, event planning and community building.
King emphasizes that while CSR is primarily a recovery space, it also supports students with loved ones struggling with addiction, who are sober for mental health or religious reasons and anyone in recovery for any reason.
“Dealing with any of these facets of recovery can be challenging no matter your age,” King said. “Pursuing a degree at such an academically rigorous institution on top of dealing with that is particularly difficult and takes incredible resilience, and that is why we are so passionate about what CSR provides.”
King said being in the new CSR location at the Student Services Building (SSB) is helping to lay the groundwork for more collaboration with other programs.
“We are looking forward to more close collaboration with other entities within the SSB, such as Longhorn TIES and Disability and Access, in addition to continuing the work we do with others in the building,” King said. “We are also excited about the possibility to host after-hours movie nights and tailgating events in the CSR main meeting room.”
Both Ettinger and King agree that even after 20 years CSR remains vigilant in their efforts to help students and to let those students stay in control of their own recovery processes.
“We offer professional recovery support through certified peer recovery support specialists, sober social events, recovery meetings of all different pathways, scholarships, volunteering opportunities, and ways to get plugged into the larger Austin recovery community,” Ettinger said. “We aren’t here to tell people what meetings to go to, what classes to take, what they have to do. We are here to help students find the resources and create the social network they can use to make their own success.”

West Liberty University Installs Additional Naxalone Oneboxes
West Liberty University is increasing accessibility to Naloxone by installing additional ONEboxes on campus. The ONEbox is an emergency opioid reversal and rescue kit designed to promote safety by assuring that individuals have the on-demand training needed to respond to an overdose emergency through bystander intervention. An initial ONEbox was installed outside of Student Health Services in November of 2022 as part of the Be The One Initiative. This initiative was created by the West Virginia Collegiate Recovery Program (WVCRN) and the West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute (WVDII), with the goal of increasing prevention and recovery efforts on West Virginia campuses. “West Liberty University is committed to the safety of our campus community. By increasing the accessibility to naloxone on campus, we are decreasing stigma and reducing the chances of an opioid overdose. The ONEbox contains 2 doses of nasal naloxone, personal protective equipment, and a video that educates and provides training on how to properly respond to an overdose,” said Christy Bennington, RN, who serves as WLU’s Director of Student Health Services. Additional ONEboxes have been installed next to the Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) located in Rogers Hall outside of the cafeteria, the College Union, and the Athletic Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC). “By increasing the number of ONEboxes on campus, we hope to help our students feel more comfortable, be more knowledgeable, and feel more empowered to support the rest of the campus community. Just like AED’s, we hope to never have to use it but it’s there just in case. It is our goal to continue to increase accessibility to naloxone by adding additional ONEboxes in the future across campus,” said Katie Cooper, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
