The Guide to Freshman Year I Wish I Had
It was just 4 years ago I was off to college and completely terrified. I wish I had been told all of these things so here I am, trying to help the next generation of freshman.
1.Going away is SCARY and that’s OKAY
College is scary AF, but guess what? EVERYONE is scared so congrats there’s your first topic of conversation.
Feeling homesick is natural even if you’re the most independent person ever. Don’t freak out I felt like that my first day but you get over it.
2.Get INVOLVED
The more you do nothing the more you’re going to hate college. Join something. Play intramurals, rush a sorority, join a club.If you’re used to being part of a team it’s natural to want that in college. For me it was a sorority for you, who knows?
But really this is one of the best points on this list.
3.Be OPEN
You are no longer in a small high school, there are THOUSANDS of people who come from all over the place. People raised different with different backgrounds. It may make you feel uncomfortable because its new to you but take in opportunities to learn and grow.
4.Date around
Okay hold your horses I’m not saying go be promiscuous and sleep with everyone. What I am saying is it’s good to go on a date here or there even if it doesn’t turn serious. DON’T I repeat DON’T just jump into things but its good to meet new people find out what you like and what you don’t. I’ve seen so many people try and hold onto a high school relationship and later on realize they don’t even know what they want anymore. High school sweethearts works for some people and that’s okay, but others need to explore themselves before making that commitment.
5.College is LIFE CHANGING
You are going to change so much in college for the better. Thinking of me my freshman year and now is CRAZY but awesome. The next 4 years will be your time to fail at things, win at things, learn things, and find out who you really are. Its okay to sometimes feel like you don’t know what you want or who you are anymore. It all comes together.
6.Do things to further your career
You’re resume for finding a job is going to solely consists of things from your college career. Hold positions in your clubs, work part time for a couple of semesters, and get summer internships. It’s SO important. PLEASE be careful of what you post on social media. Alcohol doesn’t make you look cool I promise so don’t post it because companies look at that stuff. I’ve actually been asked for links to all of my stuff and believe it or not they hire people specifically to monitor their employees pages.
7.Be SAFE
So here’s the thing college can be dangerous when you aren’t safe. Rape happens, people get arrested, there’s CRIME. When you go out pour your own drinks for really real, only go out with people you trust to not just leave you like a dead carcass on the floor, don’t get smashed all the time, get pepper spray and make good decisions. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.
8.STUDY
No more before the night studying and that’s all I have to say on that. Get good grades your first year cause they go down when you pick your major (ps its okay to change your major)
This is some main things that I thought are important to freshman but please fell free to ask any and all questions!

I’m Back!
So, the reason I haven't been posting a lot is because I moved. I was staying in an apartment, my lease expired, and I had to move into the house I had been fixing up. (The house isn't finished, btw). So I've been scrambling like an idiot to try and get a bathroom and microwave working. Long story short, I have a place to stay, internet again, and am going to be back to posting!
I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas (or whatever holiday, I don't judge) and a lovely new year! Classes start soon, so I hope everyone is prepared!
Best of luck, love you guys!

College Essentials
Morning Fuel: During my time at APU there have been many late nights laughing hysterically in the middle of Trinity Hall, studying for Biology exams, and making 11:59PM runs to the Paws N’ Go mini mart on campus to grab that last snack before it closes. With that said, my morning coffee fix has become a major necessity! The White Mocha at our Cornerstone Coffee shop on campus is my usual morning pick me up, but there are tons of different options to choose from! I definitely recommend becoming well acquainted with this place before your first classes start:)
Great Friends: The best of memories are created with the best of friends! So don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and meet someone knew! Chances are, the many new faces that you come into contact with are just as eager to find friends on campus as you are. Be Bold! As an introvert, I definitely understand how overwhelming it can feel to be surrounded by hundreds of complete strangers. But the friendships that I have made by simply reaching out to others were totally worth a few awkward introductions! Friends like Rachel, Haley, Alexis, and Jackie (pictured above) have become some of my greatest supporters and encourages over the past year and have accompanied me on the adventures of a life time. I couldn’t imagine my college career without them! At APU, there are lots of opportunities to be social; dances, hall events, ice cream socials, sporting events, movie nights, you name it! Take advantage of these amazing opportunities; they’ll make your college years unforgettable!:)
A Quiet Space: College will keep you very busy, which is why it’s important to find a place to call your own...a safe place... an escape. Mine is the mountains. I love breathing in the fresh air along with the smell of pine trees as I hike my way through thick brush and long branches. And even more than that, the massive size of the mountains and the beauty of God’s creation reminds me of just how small my problems are in comparison to strength and refuge that is found in Christ. The mountains in the picture above have become some of my favorite, and they are just a 20 minute drive from APU!
Whether it was coffee to keep me awake for my 7am class, friends to join me in spontaneity, or a place to remind me of how deep and wide and vast the love of God is; these things have definitely contributed to making my first year at APU one of the greatest of my life!

Finance Hacks Every Student Should Know
Beer. Snacks. Kraft Dinner. Coffee. That’s basically what many students’ diets look like at the end of the month when cash is low. Money just always seems to be so elusive and runs out faster than you’d expect. It doesn't have to be that way. There are plenty of ways to avoid a bunch of financial pitfalls, while still having a good social life. Here a few tips and tricks to help you out:
1. Make. A. Budget.
For real. Yes it may sound annoying and tedious, but if you’re serious about being financially responsible, making a budget is very important. It doesn’t have to be an advanced excel spreadsheet or anything. It’s really about generally mapping out the money you get (parents, loans, job etc.) and what you need to spend on during the course of the month. Doing this will help you gain an accurate view of your financial situation, and help you rectify any spending habits that are making you go broke. Mint Is an amazing app and website that helps people do just that.
2. Save Early. Save Often.
Saving is just as important as making a budget, and is one of the pillars of financial independence. Putting money aside will give you a financial safety net in case something goes wrong, and build enough funds to indulge in better things later. Getting into the habit of doing this early will also help avoid falling in the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck, or worse, beyond your means by constantly maxing out credit cards. If you’re up for it, you can also try investing your savings to make you more money!
3. Student Discounts
Always keep an eye out for student discounts. Many stores, retailers and restaurants offer deals for students as part of their loyalty programs. The savings may not seem so big at first, but by continually taking advantage of them you may find yourself saving hundreds of dollars a year. And that means more money to put aside, or spend on little pleasures. Don’t be ashamed to ask if a discount is available. You’re a student and these perks won’t last forever!
4. Pre-Drink Before Going out
This is definitely a cheaper alternative than ordering all your drinks at the club or bar. Get a few friends together to pitch in and have a nice get together before you go out. You’ll be able to actually catch up with your friends over a few drinks, and better coordinate getting to your next destination since you’ll all be in the same place. Drinking games can also make pre-drink fun. however, you do risk having so much fun that you don’t actually make it out. And that’s not bad either - more money saved!
5. Buy Used Textbooks
If you can find them, buy them as soon as you can as they can be pretty hard to find. If you can’t find used books for your class, especially if you’re in the Sciences and editions change every year or two, try to order them online, or download the ebook version. Added benefit: less books to lug around campus.
The bottom line: Student debt is a real issue for many university grads around the world. Being financially responsible early on will help you avoid financial ruin later down the road.
