RB's Japanese racer on his love of saunas, good coffee and - well, food, of course

Fashion

I like fashion. I like to choose my outfit according to my mood or where I'm going. And I like to show my colours, if you like. In short, it feels good to look good.

Food

There's no particular cuisine I like, but for me a good meal is a kind of tool to reduce stress and feel happier. It doesn't matter what kind of food it is - if it's good, I enjoy it, whether it's tacos or sushi. I really like pasta. When I'm in Italy that's what I usually eat. But it's important for me, wherever we go, to find a good restaurant so I can enjoy the food. Because in a way, as strange as it may sound, it gives me the same feeling as driving a Formula 1 car. When I drive, I just concentrate on that. It's not that I don't think - of course I do, especially during the race - but when it comes to driving, it's more about the senses than thoughts. When I'm driving I don't think about anything else. And it's almost the same with food. You just enjoy the taste and flavour - and I really like that!

Nature

We travel a lot and are surrounded by electronics and computers, Laptops, telemetry, data is our world - and sometimes it's just too much. So I like to get away from it all, to go hiking, for example, or just get out into nature and experience a different environment to Formula 1.

Jason Statham

Definitely my favourite actor, especially after meeting him in Abu Dhabi last year. I've always liked his films and Transporter is my favourite - but sometimes when you meet your hero and get to know the person better, you can be disappointed, can't you? It wasn't like that with Jason. He is such a great guy, really nice, talkative, very respectful and really, really strong! He's got everything you need. He's strong, he looks cool, he's bald. I might go bald in the future to look more like him...

Singing

I'm not the one who sings in the shower, but I do sing in the car. I just feel like it, to feel the rhythm, to have fun. And when I'm singing, I feel like a real singer.

Saunas

It's something I like to use to reset. 20 minutes in the sauna, then a cold shower and lying down - at that moment I feel like I'm in space. And it is an incredible feeling. It feels like your body is resetting itself. It feels like all the stress I have, it just comes out with the sweat, so after the sauna I feel fresh. Like a brand new me. It's funny, I didn't really like it before, but my friends kept telling me how great it was. So one day I just decided to give it another try and finally understood what they were talking about. Now it's one of my favourite things to do: just go to the sauna and relax.

Coffee

I have a good coffee machine at home. I like to grind coffee beans in the morning and make myself a good cup of coffee. Good coffee makes my day.

Wine

I don't drink alcohol very often, to be honest. And I'm not a guy who knows a lot about wine, about different types and varieties of wine. I'm not an expert, if you like. But it's nice to have a glass of wine with good food. It helps you enjoy it even more

Apex Legends

I used to play a lot more when I moved to Europe from Japan - and Apex Legends was my favourite game. I don't play as much now, but during my junior career it was a way to keep in touch with my friends in Japan because we were so far apart. Of course you can call and chat, but doing something together, playing and talking at the same time, is a lot more fun.

Football

I sometimes play football with the mechanics, engineers and other guys from the team in Faenza. And I love it. Because first of all I like the game itself, but then it's also good to hang out with the guys from the team - especially considering that it's usually the guys who don't go to races and stay at the factory, so it's also a good opportunity to bond with them.

5 Course Meal a La Flame

Like him or not, there's no denying that Travis Scott has been one of the biggest names in hip hop in recent years. His combination of unwavering energy, electrifying auto-tuned vocals, and both aggressive and melodic beats has solidified him as one of the most unique artists and performers ever. Outside of rap, the man is a marketing machine, from his deals with McDonald's and Nike, to his own brand of seltzers (RIP Cacti I was getting ripped off those bois in 2021). All this goes to say, he has had an extremely impressive run so far, and I can't see him stopping any time soon.

I wanted to break down 5 of my favorite songs of his. His catalog is eclectic and features so many different styles packed into various singles, albums, features, etc. Let's run it.

wonderful (ft. The Weeknd)

Very glad I waited to write this up because Trav brought out Abel at his Sydney show last week. I heard this song pretty late, after Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight had been out for a while, but if this shit doesn't get you FLOATIN then I honestly don't know what will. These two on track is a guarantee for a spooky, heartfelt song that still slaps the walls. The closing song on the album, I easily could've seen this being an intro depending on the direction he wanted to take things.

Smoke some. Drink Some. Pop One. Travis strings some simple phrases together and makes it slam perfectly on this interlude off Birds in the Trap. It's another reminder that he can adjust his voice to fit any production, no matter how wild and trippy it gets. The layering of the vocals and the transitions on this track are hypnotic, feeling as if you are actually crossfading in and out of consciousness. The Tavatli remix of this song is also one of my favorite Soundcloud remixes in recent memory.

3500 (ft. Future & 2 Chainz)

Let's take it back to Rodeoooooo with this one. People forget the chokehold 2 Chainz had the game in back in the early 2010s. The man simply could not miss. Then you throw Pluto in to make a Big 3 and there's no way you're ever looking back. The chorus alone on this song ripples throughout the room whenever you play it. No surprise again that La Flame switches things up and slows it down only to spike the energy back up again. It's just child's play for him at this point. Here's yet another remix, this one brought to you by my favorite spin instructor in the nation's capital, Techno TJ.

Black & Chinese

Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho dropped in the midst of an insane run for Travis Scott and Migos, so I was on the edge of my seat when it hit while I was home from college on winter break. Black & Chinese brought an unusual speedy element to the table that I feel like we don't see as much from either of these legends. Hearing that beat rumble and then Travis slide onto the beat feels so organic, then they proceed to pass verses back and forth like a game of ping pong. If you want to hear a track from a collab album that has a natural electricity to it, this is your song. Also check out Motorcyle Patches, that shit's a bop too.

COFFEE BEAN

It's tough to pick a song from ASTROWORLD, but I opted to go with COFFEE BEAN because it just has such a powerful, slow bounce to it. Cactus Jack himself takes his time telling a story and pouring his heart out over the beat, taking a break from his usual powerful ebbs and flows. Just like wonderful, this is a closer for the album, and fades out to end the rollercoaster ride perfectly. He's tuckered himself out across the journey, and is ready to unwind and release his feelings in a calm, collected manner, leaving the audience guessing for what music he'll create next.

Honorable Mention: 2013 XXL Freshman Cypher

This might be one of the most underrated XXL cyphers ever. Backwards hat Trav spitting about speedin on a motorcycle in Abu Dhabi, playin hockey wit some broads in Sweden. Sheeeeesh. With a perfect intro from fellow Freshman class members Joseph Badassery, The Baby Boy Bronsoliño, and the last Black Hippy to get a Wiki, this snippet was before it's time. Travis has changed a lot, but looking back at his roots you can still see the resemblance crystal clear.

1. what is the color of your hairbrush? Dark maroon tortoiseshell.

2. name a food you never eat: calamari

3. are you typically too warm or too cold? Too warm because the heat in my apartment building is out of control

4. what were you doing 45 minutes ago? Walking outside in the rain

5. what’s your favorite candy bar? Ritter Sport in Honig-Salz-Mandel flavor

6. have you ever been to a professional sports game? When I lived in Chicago we had a share in season tickets for the Bulls. And now that I’m in NY I always try to go to a few baseball and basketball and hockey games each season. (Mets, Nets, Islanders. Not those other teams.)

7. what is the last thing you said out loud? “Summer!” (calling to my dog)

8. what is your favorite ice cream? something chocolate. Or a Dairy Queen Heath bar blizzard

9. what was the last thing you had to drink? Water

10. do you like your wallet? Yes. It was a gift from StPauliGuy, and it is very stylish and lovely.

11. what is the last thing you ate?  Beef & broccoli with rice

12. did you buy any new clothes last weekend?  No. The last clothes item I bought was a pair of Cole Haan copper snakeskin pumps because they were marked down to $75 from the original $250. Eventually this pandemic will be over and I will go outside again, and when I do those shoes will slay.

13. what’s the last sporting event you watched? On tv: the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 race last Sunday. In person: Chicago Bulls at Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, March 8. (God, what was I *thinking* going to a packed sports arena in March?)

14. what is your favorite flavor of popcorn? Real butter and salt (not movie theater flavored butter.)

15. who is the last person you sent a text message to? My sister, confirming that the gift I sent for my nephew has arrived. The rest of the year we do not communicate at all, however.

16. ever been camping? Yes, but not very often.   

17. do you take vitamins? No, but I probably should.

18. do you regularly attend a place of worship? No

19. do you have a tan? No, there’s a pandemic and going outside will kill you. 

20. do you prefer Chinese or pizza? Pizza, any day.

21. do you drink your soda through a straw? I only drink soda very occasionally, and not through a straw.

22. what color socks do you usually wear? White ankle socks.

23. do you ever drive above the speed limit? I live in NYC and the only driving I do is on the New Jersey turnpike when we’re getting out of town. And you better believe I drive above the speed limit. 

24. what terrifies you? Something happening to my husband

25. look to your left, what do you see? My corgi, Summer. (See #7 above.)

26. what chore do you hate most? Handling the mail and paperwork

27. what do you think of when you hear an Australian accent? Grand Designs Australia on Netflix

28. what’s your favorite soda? Tamarind Jarritos or ginger ale or root beer (I like the spicy sodas, not sweet)

29. do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive thru? If I had my druthers I’d go inside. But I don’t really eat fast food, and most places in Manhattan do not have a drive thru anyway.

31. who’s the last person you talked to? My husband is the only person I see or talk to these days

32. favorite meat? charcuterie

33. last song you listened to? something from the new Chilly Gonzales Christmas album

34. last book you read?  Have been trying to read “Fleishman is in Trouble” for like the last 3 months, but quarantine brain makes it hard for me to concentrate on books.

35. favorite day of the week? Saturday

36. can you say the alphabet backwards? With some concentration, yes. 

37. how do you like your coffee? Freshly ground beans, drunk black. When I’m on vacation or feeling indulgent, then I’ll go for a cappuccino with a little sugar

38. favorite pair of shoes? my Nike running shoes in hot punch. Or my new snakeskin pumps (see #12 above)

39. time you normally get up? 7am

40. what do you prefer, sunrise or sunsets? Sunrise. It feels like a secret that only a few of us are in on.

41. how many blankets on your bed? 4, but the top one is only used to cover the bedspread so the dog can sit here with me. The other layers are required because of the erratic temperature control in this building.

42. describe your kitchen plates: Vert de Gris.

43. describe your kitchen at the moment: Acceptably clean but unbearably hot

44. do you have a favorite alcoholic drink? I don’t really drink much anymore. But the occasional glass of champagne or bottle of Modelo Especial is nice.
