The Story of X-Men: The Next Mutation (Part 1)

Can you guys actually believe it?
This month marks an entire year since I started my fanfic series, "X-Men: The Next Mutation"!
It's been a wild ride doing this series!
And I couldn't be more thankful for all of you who read it sticking with me through eight action-packed episodes!
You've seen the mutant teens face against an unstoppable foe from the past, a ravenous race of aliens, an animal-morphing hunter, a disgraced geneticist, a crazed religious zealot, and a fun-loving madman.
And there's certainly more to come!
So in honor of my series officially turning 1-year old, I wanted to share with you all the story of Next Mutation.
How i came up with the idea, my reasons for a lot of the choices made in this series, my ideal vision if it was an actual animated series, and even plans for the future of the series!
So sit back, grab a snack, and follow me as I take you all on a journey into the making of X-Men: The Next Mutation!
The Premise, The Team, Tone and Style:
The concept for X-Men: The Next Mutation dated all the way back to 2023.
I initially worked on the series in order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of The X-Men.
When coming up with the concept, my biggest inspiration was Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Which saw the titular heroes getting special new powers and becoming the most powerful we've seen them before.
I've always been fascinated by what that series did and I wanted to see something similar to that done with other famous fictional characters.
And among those characters were The X-Men.
And how would they become more powerful?
SECONDARY MUTATIONS!
And so, I decided to have Secondary Mutations, in stark contrast to the comics, be FAR more common among mutants.
Another aspect about this version of The X-Men was to have them in a world where mutants were far more socially accepted.
Not only because I felt that it would allow for the focus on the new powers to truly flourish, but also because let's be real, I think we're all starting to get burned out by seeing The X-Men being hated by all humanity and on the verge of extinction for the umpteenth time.
And after coming up with those aspects, I immediately came up with my roster.
This version of The X-Men would've consisted Cyclops, Jean Grey (who would be going under an actual codename: Psyche), Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Lockheed, Rogue, Iceman, Beast, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Angel, Thunderbird, Sunfire, Emma Frost, Psylocke, Banshee, and Xavier.
And I had already had their Secondary Mutations in mind.
And so, with all my basics down, I realized something....
youtube
I wasn't able to come up with any stories or episode ideas.
So I decided to scrap the project.
But with the impending release of X-Men '97, it gave me the encouragement to do my own X-Men series.
So I decided to revive the project, but with some changes.
I decided to scale down the roster, only keeping Cyclops, Psyche, Beast, Storm, Angel, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Iceman, Wolverine, Shadowcat, Lockheed and Xavier.
I wanted the starting roster to be a mix between the First Class and Giant-Sized cast.
I also decided to age down the cast as well.
They were originally gonna be around the same ages as in the comics.
But I aged them down to be teenagers and young adults instead.
And this ties into the main reason why I couldn’t think of any episodes for the original version.
The X-Men were already gonna have their Secondary Mutations from the start of the series.
And I felt that wasn't a good idea, as it would essentially make the series feel pointless.
So I figured it would be best to focus on The X-Men getting their new Mutations and seeing them gradually get use to them.
Hence why I made them so young.
As for the depictions of the X-Men themselves, there are two members I specifically want to highlight: Angel and Xavier.
Angel because in contrast to the comics, adaptations and even most fanfictions......he's a female here.
This was heavily inspired by the artist oni18064, who in his Marvel AU, had made Angel a female by the name of Wren Worthington.

I found the concept rather intriguing and I'd decided to adapt the idea into my series.
I had this idea in mind even for the original version of Next Mutation.
As for Xavier, I kinda wanted to help him out.
I've already gone on record about this, but it does bare repeating.
The comics have not been kind to this man for the last 20 years.
Constantly revealing tons of shady and terrible things he's done.
Going so far as to RETCON them during major events in The X-Men's early years!

I get that Xavier is not suppose to be perfect, but this movement of just tearing him down and revealing that he's a horrible person has become OVERKILL!
And having The X-Men (or anyone as a matter of fact) gradually wanting nothing to do with him anymore.
And they're still doing it to this day!

I swear to God.
90% of the horrible things that happened (or have happened) to The X-Men, Xavier is usually somehow involved in it.
And this has done so much damage how many people view him.
So many fans tend to view Xavier in an incredibly negative light and see him as a let's be real, the fucking Anti-Christ!
And I don't know why the comics became so obsessed with making Xavier into the true villain of this entire series!
But from what I've heard, this can largely be blamed on the original Ultimate Universe.
Where everyone was literally the worst versions of themselves.

Xavier in The Ultimate Universe was incredibly manipulative and was clearly shown to use his powers to get what he wants.
Also, he had the hots for Jean.
Apparently the reason why he's like that is because the Ultimate Universe had the basis of taking the negative traits that many of these characters briefly had and just made that their entire personality.
And Xavier did display a few moments of manipulation and having an interest in Jean in the past.
So they basically made that his entire personality.
Though I must ask why they decided to bring that over from the Ultimate Universe?
If they did that, why didn't they bring any of this as well?

(P.S.: Firestar in that panel is about 15 years old)
So for this series, I wanted to......not do that.
I wanted show while he may not be perfect, Xavier is a genuinely good person.
Along with that, I wanted to fix many of the major criticisms levied against him
In the comics, it's been shown that Xavier has used his powers to manipulate and tamper with the minds of others, specifically the original five.
Here, while not shown yet, The X-Men all joined Xavier by their own free will.
I really want his relationship with The X-Men, especially Cyclops, to feel much more genuine.
Not only being someone they can truly look up to and look to during their tough times, but also being someone that is truly their friend.
Another major complaint is that he never really helps out, using sitting on the sidelines while his band of child soldiers basically risk their lives for his goal.
So I decided to make him a more active player in The X-Men's adventures!
This aspect was heavily inspired by, of all characters, Joe Swanson from Family Guy!
Before he became a total joke, Joe was portrayed as not only a very competent cop, but also a surprisingly tough fighter, in spite of the fact he was stuck in wheelchair.
And So, I decided to have Xavier's fighting style being a mix between his psionic powers and his combat prowess.
Remember, the guy is canonically an Army veteran.
One thing to note about this version of Xavier is his ideology.
It's essentially the same as Cyclops' in the comics.
He believes that while mutants and humans can peacefully co-exist, but he knows that not all of them are willing to.
And that mutants should be allowed to have rights and defend themselves from prejudice.
One last thing to note about Xavier is his racial background.
In contrast to most other iteration, Xavier is of mixed heritage.
With his father being Caucasian, and his mother being African-American.
This was heavily inspired by lot a recent fan interpretations of the characters.

Which themselves were inspired by the popular fan casting of Giancarlo Esposito as Xavier.

So I decided to adapt that aspect into my fanfic and made Giancarlo the voice of the character.
Sidenote: I'm actually kinda surprised that none of readers have made any Breaking Bad jokes yet.....
Speaking of voices, when casting The X-Men, I already had who I wanted in mind.
And the choices I had were already recurring VAs for the characters.
Scott Porter as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Danielle Nicolet as Storm, Liam O'Brien as Nightcrawler, Chris Cox as Colossus, and of course, Steve Blum as Wolverine.
But for the others, this where things get interesting.
For Angel, I already had Grey Griffin in mind for her.
Same goes for Dee Bradley Baker as Lockheed.
As for the other three X-Men.....
I choose Jason Marsden for Iceman, as I felt that he would make for a pretty solid new voice for the character.
Plus, he's actually voiced Iceman before!
That being in the video game, X-Men Destiny.

It was admittedly a little tough to find a voice for a younger Beast.
But in the end, I settled on Yuri Lowenthal.
The reason why is actually an Easter Egg.
One of Yuri's most famous roles is of course, Ben Tennyson.

And several times in the series, we've met future versions of Ben, going by the alias Ben 10,000.
And the in the original series, Ben 10,000 was voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who's basically been the penultimate voice for Beast since Wolverine and the X-Men.
So basically, Fred is gonna be how Beast will sound like when he gets older.
But the hardest character for me to find a voice for was Shadowcat.
Since I wanted to give her a new VA.
But it was so damn hard.
So much so that I even considered giving her one of the prior VAs like Danielle Judovits or Kath Soucie.
But in the end, I settled on Jennie Kwan, who you'll know best as Chun Li in Street Fighter 6 and Suki in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
For the team's outfits, I used the exact same ones done by TheScarletMercenary.

I wanted to give the team for this first season matching uniforms.
And essentially, these outfits are like a modernized version of the original, First Class outfits.

The only exception with this is Wolverine, who's wearing the same outfit also done by TheScarletMercenary.
Which itself is pretty much a modified version of his classic outfit.

For the tone and style of this series, I wanted it to be a callback to a lot of the teen-focused action shows a lot us grew up with.
Teen Titans, Alpha Teens on Machines, Ben 10, Totally Spies, Danny Phantom, and even X-Men Evolution.
With a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of comedy, and most importantly, a lot of heart.
One thing to note is how this series isn't really as heavy with the themes like most other X-Men series.
That's because I kinda wanted to avoid that.
Sort of....
I know how important they are to the identity of the brand, but I've always kinda had the fear that The X-Men could only be used as just for allegory and commentary and.......literally nothing else.
But even then, those themes are still there, just little more low-key.
In episode 3, "The Beast Within", we get to see Beast's childhood and the struggles he faced due to his animalistic appearance.
And in episode 5, "Flight of The Thunderbird: Part 2", we find out how Edwin Martynec's experiment had turned the residents of Camp Verde into anthropomorphic animals.
Another thing to note is how you hardly see The X-Men in their uniforms.
Like, they've only been in the damn things for two episodes.
This essentially ties into the more slice-of-life approach to this series.
Given that's something we hardly see from The X-Men nowadays.
Hell, in the little downtime they get, they're always usually still in their uniforms.
It reminds you that in spite of their extraordinary powers, they're still just normal people with their own hobbies, dreams and interests.
But real talk though, this might be the X-Men fanfic version of Regular Show.
Like, we usually start off with these guys doing normal, everyday stuff and then BAM!
They suddenly find themselves thrusted into a world of insanity with whatever villain of the week they're facing.
Though they haven't reached this level yet.....
youtube
One major aspect of this series is its world building.
Particularly when it comes to Mutations.
I already mentioned how Secondary Mutations in this world are far more common.
But I also gave the Mutations their own system.
As stated in the series, Mutations are divided into six classes.
Energy: The mutants in this class possess the ability to manipulate some form of energy.
Mental: The mutants in this class possess various psychic capabilities.
Feral: The mutants in this class have Mutations that involve the transformation into or the obtaining of physical traits of members of the animal kingdom.
Elemental: The mutants in this class possess some kind of manipulation over the forces of nature.
Molecular: The mutants in this class have the ability to manipulate and alter their own bodies in some way.
Hybrid: The mutants in this class possess a set of Mutations that don't exactly fit into one specific class.
This system, along with the Mutations having actual names, was inspired by the Quirk system from My Hero Academia.

I also wanted to fix a major issue that's been plaguing X-Men stories for a long time....
Being that they've kinda made mutants a lot less interesting.
One thing that was cool about them was that not all of them were connected to The X-Men and many of them were doing their own thing in other parts of the world.
But with everything that's happened to them, they've unfortunately been reduced to being huddled and grouped together.
So for this series, I wanted The X-Men to have allies who while mutants, are usually off doing their own thing.
Like with Thunderbird, who's based down in Arizona.
And lastly, I want to talk about what this series would be like it if was animated.
The character designs would be Jeff Matsuda, who's famous for his work in comics and animation, especially the latter!
He did the character designs for Jackie Chan Adventures.....

The Batman....

And TMNT.

And he already has experience with The X-Men thanks to their comics.

As for the animation, it would be done by Flying Bark Studios, the animation studios behind Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Glitch Techs and LEGO Monkie Kid.
Like, you’re telling me you wouldn’t want a X-Men series animated like this?
youtube
Well that was part 1!
Part 2 will be going into detail on the X-Men’s Secondary Mutations and the inspirations for them, their supporting cast, and even their villains!
So stay tuned!
But until then, let me know what you guys think about this behind the scenes feature.
Also, let me know what you guys think makes my fanfic work in general.

Thought I'd start with this [Jim]my Hudson design I'm working on! I don't how many Jimmy Hudson fans there are but I got bored and Thought it'd be cool to give him a little redesign and codename. Nox is all I got right now as a new name for him.
I kept thinking about his codename when I was making the fanfic where Him,Iceman,Jubilee, and a few other mutants are saving imprisoned mutants from compounds around the US. Nox just felt like it flowed nice for him instead of Wolverine Jr.
As far as my face inspo/fan casting Ben hardy honestly fits the bill for me.(Got curious and slapped a beard on him on faceapp lol) What do you guys think?

Welcome back for part 2. They weren't kidding when they called this Giant-Sized
Let's Talk About:
Giant-Size X-Men; Issue 1
And so we begin chapter 2 and I'll be able to cover the rest of the chapters here too. So we begin with a frankly beautiful full page illustration. I love love love these kinds of things where the artists just get to go all in on a single piece. It's beautiful to me.
And side note on the narration... Is Xavier just that multilingual or do his psychic powers just auto translate for him somehow?
Oh and that's a very fun detail. The red dots on the visor are where his eyes are. Because like... I don't know my stuff but from pop culture osmosis... His eyes are just constantly firing lasers and the visor blocks them right? So you can still sorta see the lasers firing even while being suppressed, that's cool
Anyways. To summarize Cyclops' story. Some new incredibly powerful mutant popped up on the Mutant Radar. The original X-Men consisting of Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Havoc, Marvel Girl, and Lorna Dane went to the island of Krakoa to check it out. They were ambushed, Cyclops' suddenly was back on the jet and couldn't control it as well as having his optic blasts temporarily disabled. Once back at base the blasts came back and were uncontrollable, Xavier goes to find more mutants to help find the missing X-Men and here we are.
And here we finally get the proper codenames for those who didn't already have them. Peter as Colossus, Ororo as Storm, Kurt as Nightcrawler, and John as Thunderbird. Note I am... most likely gonna be using these names completely interchangeably whenever I feel like it. Also for the mission we've been split into teams of 2. Sunfire and Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Banshee, Storm and Colossus, Thunderbird and Cyclops. Speaking of
Thunderbird you've been the most argumentative the entire freaking time.
Anyways, the party splits for their brief one offs, facing strangling vines, giant enemy crabs, aggressive boulders and eagles with the temperaments of geese. All the while arguing or bonding along the way, depends on the pair. But everyone has one location in mind a mysterious temple that rises above the trees that suddenly appeared when everyone had landed and sure enough they all arrived at around the same time too.
And after some... Concussive maintenance we break in and find the rest of the OG crew tangled up and with vines and tubes sucking something out of them. Rescue, temple comes crashing down and we finally reveal what the fuck is going on.
Tbh I love this as a concept. A whole ass living island that has mutated. This is some Kaiju shit and I LOVE Kaiju shit.
But anyways unfortunately for the X-Men. All living things have to eat, and apparently radiation makes islands carnivorous so we gotta take that down. A fun fight is had with even Xavier joining in for a mental assault from halfway across the globe. And we finish out with Krakoa being sent into fucking space via the power of magnets thanks to Lorna getting a super charge from Ororo. But after all that and with some celebration the day is saved and my first X-Men comic is over.
This was very fun frankly. Just a big old wild ride with some bits here and there to catch the eye or provoke thought. Fun designs, cool powers, very engaging to read dialogue and narration. Yeah I need more of this shit. Sooo thanks for getting me in here Nitpick, I'll see what's up with the rest of the comics.

Quest For Glory 1: So You Want to Be a Hero | Part 5
The Adventurer's Log
Finale time!
I was waiting for that Dispel Potion to be finished, so I went back to town. At the bar, there was a crumpled note under one of the stools.

A meeting at noon... and one more thing for me to wait for. B for Bruno and B for...?
I made sure I knew where the archery range was. Then I kept going south which takes you to a lovely lake. Mirror Lake... and uh... there might have been an Easter egg of some sort? Maybe? A reference to something? Just something silly? There was a big snorkel like on a submarine... or something that came zooming up, smashed into the bank and sunk, I guess. I missed a screenshot because I was too startled. I also have my game speed fairly sped up so I didn't have a lot of time to do more than stare in bewilderment.
[Me to Past Me: I've been informed this was a reference to Codename: Iceman, another of Sierra's titles. And it was indeed a submarine. Thanks Such Minutiae!]
The lake in question anyway. It's quite a pretty little area.

After that confusion I was back to puttering and waiting and fighting anything I ran into. I can fight now!
Noon soon arrived and I found their meeting to eavesdrop on.
Brutus and Bruno. They were planning to take out the brigand chief and take over.

But it seems she's been getting suspicious of them. She's been leery thanks to a hero wandering around too. That's me! She thinks he'll go for the gold on her head. And the 'laughing jackass' has been eyeing Brutus. Bruno suggested that to avoid ambush they take the back route in. While she's busy with 'him', they'll take over.
The back door is where the "bouncer hops around". The antwerp! There's a rock with a keyhole you need a key for. I've seen that rock. Several times. They each have a key. I'm just hoping my Open spell will cut it. There's also a word needed to make 'Fred' go away once you're inside and that word is 'Hiden Goseke.' Get it? Get it?
And that was all their information. Bruno left and I tried to talk to Brutus but he just threw a knife at me...
So I left too. And my Dispel Potion was ready!
I decided to spend the rest of the day grinding my spells some more though. I hadn't even tried my Dazzle spell yet after all the maze woes. I'm very reliant on Flame Dart...
I spent the next day doing so as well. I was actually defeating things relatively easily now! Drunk off power. I wanted to get my spell, stats and money a little more boosted for the end game. You can also carry your character over to the next game, so I wanted to be well-prepared. I was going to spend the night and eat dinner at the inn again for a change. I've done most of my sleeping and eating at Erana's Peace. Cinder's been living off of fruit and sleeping in flowers.
That was the plan... I then realized...what if I could handle a cheetaur and troll now? I still needed claws and troll beard to sell to the healer, well not need, but it was a request. I succeeded! On both counts! ...and used up all but one healing potion, but I did it! With the troll I just alternated dazzle to freeze it and flame darts and when I did get into a direct fight, I ran and started the pattern again until it went down. Tuuurns out doing the Mage's Maze for Dazzle was worth it actually. If I had to fight it directly I'm sure I'd have been wizard paste. The battle music is different for these stronger enemies. Nice touch. Makes it scarier. More dramatic.
Then I fled back to Erana's Peace to sleep, but I encountered one of these things on my way and my spells didn't seem to work, so I ran.

And ran. It was fast and persistent but I stumbled into the archery practice area which is a no-monster zone. That was scary. I may have been taking things out, but everything was still scary.

So it was off to Erana's Peace as the town gates are closed at night
I still wanted one more night at the inn before the end though. So I spent another day hanging around, selling my claws and beard to the healer and replenishing my potion stock.

She did give me two healing potions for the troll beard.
...I also had stronger monsters showing up during the day now, as I was nearly ambushed by one of those wretched flappy things. I checked and once you pass 1000XP the stronger monsters can appear during the day. Goody!
I ran into a bigger scarier red saurus!

It was fast! It just kept catching me when I tried to run. I managed a dazzle to freeze it in place and I skeddadled. Grinding monsters just got scarier now...
Finally evening came and I went to the inn and had a meal.

I tried giving Abdulla some money and got some new info too!

Hint hint, game 2, hint hint.
And then, at last, enough messing about. It was time to go after brigands and their leader, and solve this problem once and for all.
I was feeling pretty good about my stats short of the lack of MP. Sleep doesn't do a whole lot of restoration... but I had potions if necessary.
I found the location with the rock. I was able to cast Open to unlock it.

But my Open wasn't strong to move it. Turned out I could just move it physically. Sometimes simplicity is the answer.
I stepped in and got slaughtered by a troll. I forgot to say the 'word'.

You gotta say 'hiden goseke' before entering the cave and then you'll hear something move away.
Then I found the troll's room in the caves, got too close to its gross pile of yuck, and it came back and killed me. I was feeling all triumphant and heroic! Now it's back to ye olde repeated deaths--everything is back to normal.
I went through the caves and ran into a minotaur guard.

A Calm spell settled him down so I could pass, Cast Open on the gate and enter.

I'm sure that rug is perfectly safe. Nothing suspicious here.

GASP. A TRAP? NEVER.
Anyway.
I tried casting Open to see what might happen and it.. opened a Jack in the Box, which summoned the bandits. Deady dead.

The right plank drops you into the pit. The left is safe. However, on the other side I tried going up the through the middle and hit a trip wire that dropped an Antwerp on my head to my demise. Again.
I wasn't sure what to do but I tried looking at the trip wire and the message said it could be stepped over. So I typed step over trip wire and it worked. Simplicity. The answer.
Bringing me to the next room.

Then I got stuck. I needed to bar the doors or I'd get surrounded. I could close the door behind me and bar it. I could push the chair in front of the other. But then more would come out of the other doors. I realized I could push the candle over, but the brigands would come out fast, get temporarily stalled then just kill me anyway.
I finally made it through. Push the candle over so the next wave get stopped for a moment. Then get in front of the table and climb it.

Then he'll swing on the rope and knock them down like bowling pins.
The death messages were giving hints like seeing the light, and I knew the candelabra and very conspicuous rope were important, but I just had trouble actually making use of said hints in the right way.
That was irritating but I made it to the next room with Me.

He speaks in many rhymes and puns and general bad wordplay. I love him.
I talked to him and asked him about several things including himself and most importantly Elsa.

His actual name is Yorick and he had been the court jester. When Elsa went missing ten years ago he swore to find her. It took him two years to find her with the brigands and he's been posing as her warlock since. Someone has to protect her. He and Toro (the minotaur) are his only friends. When Elsa was enchanted she lost her memory. He has a Magic Mirror he hoped would work but it only works for spells cast at you--it reflects them. I'd need a Dispel Potion, so it's a good thing I have one of those.
When I tried to move he said Elsa was right next door and he'd go set up the secret exit for me. Then he popped through a flippy exit in the wall.
This room is a maze and it's easy to get dropped into the pit where you'll then be rolled, literally, out the top right door and just keep rolling into the pit and back through the door and into the pit, until you tell it to stop or you die. With a fair amount of trial and error...and much falling I made it to the blue upside down fake door. Opening it causes it to fall on you, but if you step aside in time you can avoid temporary flattening and then get through the real door.
Leading to the bandit leader at last!

There she is! I used the wrong phrasing to use the dispel potion and got killed. Second time was the charm.

She remembered who she was again and Yorick came to fetch her. He also mentioned the magic mirror again if I decided to counter the curser. "So tip the canoe and toodleloo! Elsa if you do the honors I'll honor your due." And she had an amulet to teleport them both out and back to the castle where she promised to make sure I'd be rewarded, tell her father what happened so the brigands could be taken care of and the stolen goods returned.
I had to take my own way out where Yorick came in, but first I searched her desk for two healing potions and the magic mirror. Then I got out of there.
I do kind of wish there'd been more I could do in there with spells. Once you're inside the bandit lair it feels like it doesn't much matter what your class/skills are. Everything seems like it's dealt with the same way.
Anyhoo, it was time for one last task. To break the curse! And so it was time to return to Baba Yaga.
I used the mirror, so when she tried to turn me into frog, she got frogged instead.

She was "hopping mad!"
She cast a spell to warp me out of there then fly away in her house.

Bye-bye Baba Yaga. Those little wings look so silly.
The land is free!
I got moved to the castle for celebrations and my glory!

He looks way too confident for my bumbling Cinder.
But the journey doesn't end there.

It was time to leave and head for Shapeir with the Kattas and Abdulla from the inn, to more adventures! And Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire.
A hero's journey never ends...
My final stats heading into the next game, taken just before I sent Baba Yaga packing as that was my last chance to check. So I'll be a little richer from reward money for saving Elsa.

I earned 489/500 points. Not bad at all for a first time but I do wonder about those missing eleven points...
So ends Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero.
--
Final Thoughts
I had a rough, slow, tangled start both in and out of game, unfortunately, but once I really got rolling I quite enjoyed myself.
It's neat that there are three classes each with different solutions to puzzles. I enjoy being able to ask NPCs all the things. Gimme that dialogue. Give me plenty of things to look at, and barring that, silly messages when there's nothing to see--thank you game. It has goofy puns and jokes which I always appreciate.
The story is pretty simple but kind of sweet with the Elsa situation and Yorick spending all that time looking out for her. I'm a sucker for loyalty, okay. And there are plenty of hints if you talk and ask the right things between Abdullah, the centaur and Erasmus.
It also feels friendlier in some ways than King's Quest. So far anyway. It is possible to hit a dead end but there aren't many ways to do it and aside from missing the magic acorn, the other methods you'd have to deliberately do them.
I'm not a big fan of the combat and I'm glad I played a wizard so I could rely more on spells. I also wish it was easier to rest and pass time, but that's something I know QFG2 fixes.
Overall I had a good time and I'm glad I've finally started this series, much later than I originally intended.

@mettleborn (@ Adelia)
It was, Mycroft supposed, quite the cliché to meet on a park bench - but then, many clichés existed for a reason, did they not? If it worked, it worked, and history was very clear on how the British espionage methods were highly successful.
Still, he wasn't particularly happy about being sat in the park. Of course, this had less to do with the cliché element, and more to do with how he would rather be sat in his usual seat at the Diogenes Club. Under other circumstances, the club made for a delightful location for meetings (albeit, restricted to the Stranger's Room). Here, though, it wasn't suitable. As disagreeable as it was, the park was a far safer option.
Mycroft didn't instantly react as his contact sat down next to him. Other than a brief glance to his side (to confirm who it was, but also because the natural reaction would be to look and thus he wanted to mimic that), to an outside eye, it looked as though he kept his focus on the newspaper he was reading. In reality, he was paying complete attention - he was simply using more of his senses than sight alone.
Ruinmaker was a rather dramatic codename. Mind you, Mycroft couldn't really speak, considering that he had been 'Iceman' during his youth. His current codename, Antarctica, was a lot tamer, though did admittedly still retain the underlying theatrics. There was presumably something psychological to be said about the Secret Service's tendency towards histrionic codenames - something that he didn't particularly care to mull over in any detail.
"Lovely weather today, don't you agree?" Mycroft eventually said, his eyes still not moving from the newspaper. He was expecting a code phrase in response. Though he had read the agent's file and therefore was aware that he was speaking with the correct individual, it was still procedure to confirm it. Plus, if there was something wrong - such as her cover having been blown - it gave her a chance to use one of the alternate code phrases to subtly reveal this.
#mettleborn#queued;#don't worry about exactly matching the legth! A lot of this is set dressing#the code phrase can be whatever you want it to be :)#I'm thinking maybe this is a semi regular update meeting but oh no something's been going on in Spetre#and MI6 needs to react quickly to counter it?

The Weight of Things
Mycroft Holmes played the heavy, the cold man-
He knew the reason some call him Iceman was earned. There are documents which will never see the light of day until his bones have long turned to dust before others will know of the actions of the person codenamed Antarctica. The mega-genius was calculating, and exacting; willing to make, and execute, the hard decisions.
Mycroft played the heavy, the manipulating man-
Once he was able to prove he was of better service in the office, than in the field, he eschewed all outward appearances of ever having done so. He worked hard at his perfectly curated his sharply honed brain over blunt instrument brawn image.
Played the heavy, the secretive man-
He kept the secrets of Crown and Country.
He kept the family secrets, knowing them for the ticking bombs they were.
Not telling his parents believe his sister was alive.
Letting John believe the man he loved was dead.
Mycroft bore the weight of the damage that should not have been his to take on when time ran out.
For when they inevitably blew? It was bad.
The heavy, the bad man-
It came with a price…
While Mycroft honestly enjoyed the work, it cost him the trust of people in general and his personal happiness overall and a life of isolation.
He told himself it was a minor thing. That it was the balance needed in the scale of things. And for far too many years he not only believed it, but willingly paid it.
But then the scales tipped.
They tipped with a weight Mycroft never imagined bearing.
They tipped with a weight that could not be seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched.
Except in his heart.
Tipped by the all-encompassing weight called love in the form of one Gregory Lestrade.
The oh so heavy weight that lightened everything else around him.
And once tipped, it outweighed everything else.
Make no bones about it, Mycroft Holmes is who he is– cold, manipulating, secretive, the heavy the bad man.
But it’s the heavy weight of Greg’s love that lightens his heart to also make Mycroft Holmes-Lestrade a good man.

🥀RULES🥀
[Originally posted on July 14th, 2024]
🥀// Hello everyone! I’m here to set some strict ground rules. This applies to all of the RP blogs (which are tagged below) that joined me on this roleplaying journey!
Please do not vent or dump personal information// Behind the screens of these accounts are people—real people, just like you! We are not your therapists, and we are not a shoulder for you to cry on!
Spamming our ask boxes every second is stressful to us// We have lives to live, and we will be busy or just not be motivated to answer a question at the moment. We can also decide not to respond to something if we don’t want to, so don’t get upset if we don’t answer your question(s). Pressuring us to answer is not okay.
Keep things SFW// Some of our audience (and some Muns) are under 18, so please be mindful that young eyes are lurking around!
Forcing us to respond to things your way is not recommended// We will answer things the way the character(s) will respond accurately. If you do not like the way they talk to you, these blogs are not for you.
If one of the accounts blocks you, they do not owe an explanation// I will say this once and only once... DO NOT GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO HUNT DOWN THE MUN'S MAIN ACCOUNTS JUST TO DM THEM ABOUT BLOCKING YOU; this happened to one of the Muns, making them very uncomfortable, especially since they have not listed their main account on their roleplay blog.
🥀//The gang and I hope you understand our reasoning behind these rules. We are very forgiving; mistakes happen, but if the rules are broken more than once (and you're well aware that you're breaking them), it's an instant ban. I'm being serious.

okay since everything except for Uncanny Spider-Man is out now I'm gonna go ahead and give my reviews of Fall of X so far
First off, Immortal and Red continue to be masterpieces, no surprises there, both books however are clearly taking a turn in a different direction and I'm loving it for both of them.
Jean Grey is not what I expected it to be at all, but still an amazing character study of Jean, I expected nothing less from Simonson of course.
Invincible Iron Man and X Men are decent, not a fan of exactly whats going on with Kate, the Emma stuff is great though. Kamala should not be in this book. I hate the avengers by default but I don't exactly hate whats going on between Emma and Tony, though that might change. The "wedding" is going to be exactly what I expected it would be of course. Overall not Duggan's worst writing but I don't love it.
Uncanny Avengers is... meh, so far, Pietro is super OOC which is :/ but maybe he'll get some more focus later on, god I hope he does. But it's frustrating how little effort is going into portraying him as a visible person of color when a much greater effort is going into his sister. Monet used her telepathy which gives me hope for her! I'm down for more of her teaming up with Kwannon tbh, they make a good team.
Astonishing Iceman is a bit of an anomoly to me. It's very good writing so far, I'm loving how Orlando writes Bobby, but I'm really pissed that they've chosen to stick with Romeo as his love interest after he got aged up just to come back and fuck Bobby and for them to throw Christian to the side. No mention of Christian at all at the hellfire gala, Emma is not concerned with where he is like she is with the Cuckoos which :/. I'm honestly afraid he's being dropped as a character which fucking sucks. The thing I hate the most about how Romeo is there is that Christian could literally be in his place and it would be perfect to me. He has a power set that could absolutely work for this situation just how Romeo's is working! Who knows, maybe this relationship will grow on me. We'll see.
Alpha Flight is really good, I haven't delved into the world of AF comics yet but from everything I know it seems perfect. My man was only there for two seconds in the first issue but we'll see if he gets any panel time as it goes on. Even if he doesn't though, yeah I'll be a little pissed but it'll still probably be a good read, and at least he'll have made any appearance at all since Marauders. Oh and Puck making fun of his new codename was funny. Fang really is a dumb name.
X-Force is still garbage, but this weird plot twist with Quentin (whatever it is??) has me gritting my teeth. fucking get your hands off my boy Percy he does not deserve this. Curious to see whats going on with the Colossus plotline, just wish it was happening in a better book.
Children of the Vault is amazing, never cared for Bishop and haven't read much Cable yet but I'm still all in on it. One of those books where you don't have to care much for the characters to recognize its quality. also fun fact: its written by the comic writing mentor of my comic writing mentor. lol
Dark X-Men wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be, but its still good. Though it kinda feels like it has too many characters in it so far, I'm loving the Maddie content and it had some great dark humor in it. LOVED the children of the atom bits, im so curious whats going to go down with Carmen and I'm just glad her friends and her relationship with Buddy got some panel time tbh.
last and the actual best: Realm of X was SO FUCKING GOOD. I've had a little soft spot in my heart for Curse since her story started in X-Men Green, and it seems like she's going to be a huge part of this arc rather than just tagging along as a little kid which is great. Sooraya fucking stole the show, this new take on her power signature is amazing. In general love all these women (Typhoid Mary is growing on me, I'm going to call the awful things she's done that made me want to hate her poor writing choices, especially since shes a survivor of such acts in the first place.) SO curious with what's going on with Yana, and I love how devoted she is to keeping Curse safe. DID NOT expect Saturnyne to be the main villain but im down for it tbh. This book is my favorite already and i just cant wait for hte next issue!
#wednesday spoilers#x men#WHOO that was a lot but. yeah#ill just rb with the uncanny spiderman review when it comes out lol

Upcoming X-Men: The Next Mutation Episodes
Well this isn't something I haven't done before, but I thought it would be nice to do since the end of the year is just a few weeks away.
These are some of the upcoming adventures to expect next year from X-Men: The Next Mutation.....
-On Angel's Wings: Angel has gone through her Secondary Mutation and is using it to help heal people in need, leading many to believe that she's an actual angel. Unfortunately, this catches the ire of the religious zealot and disgraced reverend William Stryker, who believes mutants are the work of The Devil. And upon finding this out, he and his terrorist group, The Purifiers decide to teach the mutants and those who are on their side a lesson in the name of the Lord.
-Date Night in Murderworld: The first holiday special of the series! It's Valentine's Day, and The X-Men and their friends are heading to that new amusement park in town: Loverworld! But suddenly, this theme park turns from a place of love to a place of DEATH as literally everything starts trying to kill them! Now; The X-Men, Duncan, Taryn, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and returning guest character Spider-Man and his girlfriend Chat, must fight for their lives and stop the madman in the charge of the park, who simply calls himself: Arcade.
-Old Frenemies: A pleasant birthday party for Wolverine gets tainted upon the unexpected visit of an old face from his past. This being the regenerative mercenary with a blabber mouth, Deadpool. Initially trying to past it off as a well-meaning visit, Deadpool would eventually reveal that he came to warn Wolverine as a trio of his past foes known as Team X, were coming for him. This team consists of the likes of Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, and of course, Sabretooth.
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Mutants: The X-Men receive a new member in the form of a young British woman by the name of Betsy Braddock, who takes on the codename: Psylocke. However, her new membership will be put into question when The Westchester District finds itself attacked by the forces of the most feared ninja clan in the world: The Hand, who are after her.
-Surface Pressure: The students of Empire State University are going on a week-long cruise for spring break. However, The X-Men soon find themselves teaming up with Namor the Sub-Mariner in order to help him stop his arch-nemesis Attuma, who's planning on conquering the surface world with his army of giant sea monsters.
-Kitty's Fairy Tale: The first movie event. When Wolverine and Mariko go out for the night, Shadowcat and Lockheed are left in charge of babysitting. And so, the duo decided to tell Akihiro and Laura a bedtime story. The story sees our X-Men planted into the world of the 1001 Nights, where Shadowcat, Lockheed, Nightcrawler and Colossus are a pirate crew about to embark on a journey so grand, even the legendary Sinbad would have to give a thumbs-up to it!
-Party Crashers: The senior prom has arrived at Midtown High School, and Nightcrawler, Scarlet Witch, Colossus and Iceman are excited to have the night of their lives. Unfortunately, the party finds itself crashed by members of The Brotherhood.
-Close Encounters of the Mutant-kind: The X-Men find themselves be recruited by a society of multiversal variants of themselves, and now they have to prove their worth when an alliance of multiversal villains unleash an army of highly-advanced Sentinels onto their headquarters.
-Brothers Forever: The X-Men are off to Hawaii to visit their old friend, former fellow X-Men, and Cyclops' younger brother: Alex Summers, codename: Havok. As well as the rest of his team, the government and S.H.I.E.L.D.-sponsored X-Factor, consisting of Forge, Polaris, Strong Guy, Multiple Man and Emma Frost. However, things go south when upon their arrival, the team finds out that Havok has gone missing. And now, the search is on for the missing mutant teen. But their search will eventually lead them to the mutant madman who calls him The Living Pharaoh.
-Shock to the System: Spidey and Chat return again for another guest appearance! This time, they're helping The X-Men take down Electro, who after gaining his Secondary Mutation, plans on conquering all New York with its very own technology.
-Wrath of the Man-Apes: A survival training weekend in The Savage Land goes south when The X-Men get attacked and captured by the tribe of savage, ape-like humans known as The Man-Apes, who are planning on forcing them to fight in a death arena. However, Duncan and Taryn managed to escape capture, and now it's up to them to rescue their friends. Luckily, they'll be receiving help from The X-Men's old friend Ka-Zar and his saber-tooth tiger brother Zabu.
-Lovers of War: Wolverine and Mariko tell their kids and The X-Men the story of how they first met and how they fell in love.
-The Show of Strength: Cyclops, Beast, Colossus, Psylocke and Wolverine find themselves being transported to an inter-dimensional fighting arena alongside several other heroes and villains of notable physical strength by the psychotic inter-dimensional television host: Mojo. This was done for his latest reality television hit: The Show of Strength, where he'll split the transported individuals into two teams: Heroes and Villains, and have them fight each other in a series of either 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 battles. Whichever team wins will become the cast of his traveling wrestling show.....forever.
Well that's all for now!
Let me know what you guys think about these upcoming episodes!

Beginnings part 2 introductions (Pre-Tragedy Ark
Location: Earth, North America, USA, Rode Island, Happy Harbor, Young Justice Acadamy, Classroom 101,
Date: 6/1/2010
Time: 8:30am
(The classroom was abuzz with various conversations. Somewhere discussing what they were looking forward to about the curriculum while others were speculating on who the teacher was going to be. These conversations were short when a man with brown hair and eyes entered the room.)
???: Alright class settle down. I know your excited to begin training but we need to take care of introductions first. My name is James Mccloud, codename, Starfighter, and I will be your instructor while you are here.
I want everyone to introduce themselves one at a time and from there we will start your combat training for today. When you came here you should have been given a number by the Principle. When I call your number, you will come into the front of the lecture area and introduce yourself to your classmates. Keep your introductions brief and to the point. Number One your up.
(A young boy no more than thirteen looking closer to fourteen came up to the room. He had black hair and a domino mask with white blinders so no one could see his eyes. His uniform was dark red with dark green leggings designed for movement, a black cape with yellow accents and black gloves and combat boots.)
???: Hi there, my name is Robin. I'm Sponsored by Batman and Batwoman. I already know a lot of you here but for those of you I haven't met yet it's nice to meet you!
(Robin then went to sit down. The next student was a red headed speeder with green eyes. His suit was yellow with red accents.)
???: Hey there, the names Kid Flash but outside of custom I'm Wally West. I like spending time with my uncle who's the Flash and my aunt Iris.
???: Artimis Crock, code name Arrowette.
???: My name is Leonardo Hamato, I go by Blue Carapace or BC for short when out in the field.
???: My name is Batgirl I like gymnastics and programing
???: The names Raphiel Hamato, I'm one of Leo's younger brothers. call be Red Carapace or RC if you want out in the field.
???: I'm Zattana Zetara I don't have a cryptonym so just call me Zattana while out in the field.
???: I am Prince Brion Markov of Markovia but in the field I shall be known as Geo Force.
???: My name is Lilith Clay, but you can call me Omen in the field.
???: Hi there, I'm Katherine Pryde but you can call me Kitty. My code name Shadowcat.
???: My name is Donatello Hamato but, in the field, I am known as Purple Carapace or PC.
???: My name is Bobby Drake; Iceman is my code name.
???: The name's Michelangelo Hamato, call me Orange Carapace or OC for short if you want.
???: Howdy folks, the names April O'neil, aspiring reporter. You can call me Minddancer when where out on a mission though.
???: Hey there, the name is Casey Jones, but you can call me Hotshot. This is goanna be metal!
Starfighter: Alright then, now that we all know one another I am going to tell you guys about the team selection which will be your first assignment. In two weeks, you will be going Infront of the team captains and showing off your abilities. The goal is to get an offer to be on at least one of our student teams or be chosen to lead one of a new team.
Right now, there are five squads. Junior X-Men, which, for those of you who want to join the X-Men will be the squad to aim for, The Young League, for those of you who want to join the Justice League, and the reserve squad for those who don't get any offers. The Hex Girls which is a music and magic based squad, and Mystery Inc, which is a mystery solving team.
You will be allowed to have another student assist you though it will give them extra credit on the assignment. I will have each of you know that this assignment is worth a decent part of your grade for your combat course. So please be sure to consider your options carefully.
For those of you who wish to make a new squad please come and see me after classes are over for today and I will explain how that will work. Do any of you have any questions?
(Donatello raise his hand while taking notes on the assignment. At the same time robin raise his Artimis does the same)
Starfighter: Yes Robin? What is your question?
Robin: Do the skills we showcase have to be combat or can it be something relevant to hero work?
Starfighter: No, not necessarily. So long as the skill in question is useful in the hero industry then it can be put into the showcase.
Donatello: So, if I were to show one of my inventions then I would be able to complete the assignment so long has it can be used to help heroes with their task?
Starfighter: Yes, you can, has long as it's not some kind of explosive like a bomb, it should be fine. Though I would recommend using an invention that you have or nearly finished if you want to use inventing as your presentation for the showcase. You should probably do so maintenance on it as well just to be on the safe side. Don't want it breaking down during the show after all. Unless you want to showcase your ability to fix items under fire.
This applies to other skills you have already learned on your own or from your mentor. So, for example, Robin could showcase his stealth alibies rather than fighting, or he could showcase his acrobatics. Artimis on the other hand could showcase her archery skills or the different kinds of trick arrows she has.
(Wally raises his hand while a few of the other student's hands go down)
Starfighter: Wally what is your question.
Wally: So, let's say that I wanted to showcase my knowledge of chemistry, would that work? My uncle taught me forensics a while back and I want to use that for the show case.
Starfighter: Yes, that could work, though you would need to use a test that could been done in under ten minutes as that will be the limited amount of time, you'll have to show case your chosen abilities.
(The class bell rings)
James: Alright class it looks like were out of time for this class period and will start training for today. Please be sure to turn in a list of ideas for your showcase by Friday this week.
If you already have decided on what you will do and have been given my approval for it, you your homework will be to practice your plan for the showcase until then. For those of you who will need help setting up for it please come and see me with a list of what you will need.
{The following Characters are now available for questions:
Robin
Batgirl
Kidflash
Artimis
Zatanna
Omen
Leonardo
Raphiel
Donatello
Michelangelo
Minddancer
Hotshot
Starfighter
Feel free to ask any thing!}

Codename Iceman also did this. At the start of the game, you could ask a lady on the beach what day it is and she'd answer with the current system time plus so many years.
This actually threw off the ScummVM devs if I recall correctly because the "get system date" function in SCI changed its starting year between versions and not everyone was aware that the lady would give a date in the future regardless.
Sci-fi writers: In the year 2023, robots have become-
People in 2023: no they haven't lol
Sci-fi writers: FINE, in the year fucking 8482756738471
