Alright hear me out.
1: Code Name S.T.E.A.M is a Nintendo game for the 3DS based around U.S public domain characters that used the stylus for aiming.
2: The Switch 2 reportedly has a mode where the controllers can work like a mouse, meaning it can replicate stylus style aiming.
3. The public domain has expanded since the original release of Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
4. Mickey Mouse's debut was in Steamboat Willy.
5: Video game versions of public domain characters have appeared in Smash, such as Castlevania's version of Dracula.
There is a specific set of actions Nintendo could take now where bringing back Code Name STEAM lets them put their own version of Mickey Mouse in Smash.

Tonight, my most STEAMPUNK journey begins.
Code Name S.T.E.A.M. was a commercial failure created by Intelligent Systems. Pitched as a "Steampunk Civil War", from the get go this game seemed to be doomed to obscurity. But is it worthy of such a legacy?
Let's Join The Team.
This stream series will be my second ever "Bucks-a-thon" special. I am raising money for my 2025 move. All subs, bits, ko-fi donations, will be counted towards the total money. For every $100 raised, there is a new incentive unlocked.
Tumblr media
The current plan is for this to be a 4 day long event, though it may be extended if I really struggle with the game. I hope to see you all for what may be the silliest stream series I've done.

Note
Ladies, if your game is on the 3DS, developed by Intelligent Systems, lets you use Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina if you have their amiibo, and is unfairly hated on and dismissed out of hand by people who let internet hiveminds decide what their opinion is, that's not your game that's Code Name S.T.E.A.M.

I was tagged by @tisorridalamor for tag game backlog check-up and I haven't done one of these tag games in a while, so sure, why not?
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn: this one I'm getting to next! But I still need to finish up Path of Radiance first, where I'm right at the final chapter. And since I wanna stream me playing that for a friend, I gotta wait until we both have time for that.
Persona 5 Royal: this one's I bought about two years ago, so. Uh. It has been sitting in my backlog for a while now. Also not sure when I'll get to it.
Nier Automata: Bought this one along with Persona 5. Same as before applies, but I think I wanna get to it before P5, cause I think it's shorter.
Shovel Knight: I bought this one years ago and played until the lategame boss rush, which I just couldn't get past. And since then, I haven't really touched it.
Code Name S.T.E.A.M.: Got this one a while ago for like 2€ since it was sitting at that game shop for ages. Not a high priority, but when I do I can use the Fire Emblem amiibo for it, which is nice.
Professor Layton x Ace Attorney: Got this one as a gift (for lack of a better term) years ago. But before I touch it, I wanna play more of the Professor Layton series, where I only played the first game ages ago.
Pikmin 2: got the Wii version years and years ago, played it for a bit and then dropped it. But, one day. One day.
Final Fantasy IX: bought it a few years ago, played it a bit, and then kept meaning to come back to it.
Final Fantasy VII: bought it on a sale where it was 50% off, but haven't touched it yet.
Now some other games I don't have right now but wanna maybe get if they don't slip through the cracks for me:
Another Code Recollection: I know that if I don't get it soon this game will be rare later down the road, so I better get to that soon.
Blasphemous 1 + 2: this one has a friend's seal of approval, and I like the pixel art, so it's got my interest at least. But whether and when I'll get to it, that's another question.
Elden Ring: I got a PC that could probably run it pretty well now, but I kinda wanna wait and see if it ends up on the Switch's successor.
Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition: IT'S NOT OUT YET BUT IT HAS GOT TO BE HERE
That's all that come to mind right now - and I guess I gotta tag people for this? So uhhhh @bigboobshaunt @baevi @sleepy-crows @you-didnt @lunanilla @metalempire You know how these things go, don't have to do this, yadda yadda yadda and so on

Ryu Number: Alice (i.e. of Wonderland)
Okay, I know what you're thinking. K.C., are you really churning out a post on Alice's Ryu Number? Sora is in Smash, for goodness' sake. That's Kingdom Hearts, which gets you the Disney version split-lickety.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that's true. And it would be perfectly reasonable to shut the book on the matter right there and shout, "Problem solved!" But here's a question: Are Alice of Wonderland and Alice Liddell the same person?
That's a rhetorical question, by the way. If a century of Alicologists aren't going to come to an agreement, an opinion off the end of a tumblr post is unlikely to set off a scholarly paradigm shift. For what it's worth, Lewis Carroll himself seemed to consider Liddell and the literary Alice as separate individuals—the latter as more of an idealization than any real person*—but he's got some investment in the matter, so he's not exactly a reliable source.
(This is a joke. Don't at me.)
*Woolf, J. (2010). The Mystery of Lewis Carroll. St. Martin's Press.
... But we're not here for literary analysis, of course. We're here for the Ryu Numbers. So what's Alice Liddell's?
The most obvious route, of course, would be through American McGee's American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns video games. The lore of the second game straight out gives Alice the surname Liddell...
Tumblr media
... and the opening cutscene of the first game features a photograph in Alice's bedroom of someone who might be Lewis Carroll (which is a bit weird, but whatever), as well as an Alice storybook (meaning Alice exists one narrative layer higher than the literary Alice).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...That said, if American McGee did mean for the game Alice Liddell to be the Alice Liddell, that's something it looks like he walked back in game two (or at least went in with plausible deniability about). Game Alice seems to have had just the one sibling, an older sister named Elizabeth, and her father's name was Arthur—the real Alice, on the other hand, had nine siblings in all (jeez), with her only older sister named Lorina and her father named Henry.
(Also all the Wonderland elements explicitly take place in Alice's head, which means technically we shouldn't be counting Wonderland characters any more than we'd count characters that show up in dreams or hallucinations, but I'll pretend not to notice if you pretend not to notice, alright? Call it the Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. precedent.)
Tumblr media
To get to something plausibly Liddeller, I'ma jump back to the Apple II/Commodore 64 era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, the Laurence Yep? Aunno, maybe! I wrote to him once, because I wanted to know if the Charles Edward Stuart that appears in this game is actually Charles Edward Stuart, or just the White King believing himself to be Charles Edward Stuart, both of which seemed likely enough to me given the setting.
Tumblr media
I never got an answer back, probably because I couldn't find any contact info for Laurence Yep and ended up writing to the most recent publisher of his works I could find instead. What I'm saying is that I doubt Mr. Yep ever laid eyes on my letter before it was slam-dunked into the nearest wastebin (Mr. Yep if you are reading this please DM me).
Anyway, shortly before Alice falls into the rabbit hole, gets swept up in the usual Wonderland annoyances, then finally makes her way up and out the same rabbit hole (i.e. no "it was all a dream," it's happening for realsies), Alice runs into a dude on a boat. It's Lewis Carroll, and you know he's Lewis Carroll because he says he's Lewis Carroll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Add that that he's a teller of stories to this Alice, and and it serves as good implication as any that the player character is the historical Alice Liddell.

I got back into the Japanese stuff (sorta), had brain wave today and made up a new anime AU plot which is sorta a crossover with media i like with two OCs as the main (focus) characters. And they're G/T coded.
Calling this whole thing 'Living the High-tech Life'
So get this :
In an alternate world of ours with non-humans living with us, taking place in good ol' Nippon(aka Japan), where lots of problems had started to rise. There's this teenage girl named Michiko Ito. She chill and pleasant to be around, but is also very VERY smart and is into robotics, astrology and the S.T.E.A.M. concept as a whole. Ever since the country started to get attacked by enemies, she always is up to help. Thought out her life technology seems to like her a lot, as she show no problems with it. She thinks there's an sentient AI on her side. She was right
She moves into a town/city that her relatives use to live before and is where a friend of her lives(She moving in without family). Michiko's dad weirdly had already knows what house is good for her, so before she moved out he gives the address and keycard of a house a close friend of his had. Michi gets and rediscovers one of the very first smart houses, which as of Michiko arriving has it's power off. After managing to turn the power on - turns out it's were that sentient AI came from.
His serial name is Atals_04 and he's a 'Home Assistant and Guardian Unit' (HAAGU for short(subject to change)) and the only one existing, which means he's not only a screened machine hanging from the celling who has full control of the house and can transfer himself anywhere at all, but he's also a superweapon with his other primary form, a gigantic mech-robot. Mr.Ito's friend had made 4tlas to protect his town, the residence and home country, but was later exploited by the military of that time and had to be hidden away with the house until the right time came. That 'right time' was Michiko getting the house for herself. The person wants Michiko to be able to save the world and his legacy project to live on.
They pretty much get along in a 'semi-stoic guy and chill fun person' type of 'platonic roommates' duo and they go out and deal with whatever goes in their path with the support and help of Michko's friends.
Tumblr media
This is how'd they probably looked like. Designs are subject to change, but for 4tals i want to keep the screens -
So, anyways, that's it for now -
Next post is probably gonna tell what fandoms are currently in -

Everybody Is Dead...!
In the Metal Fight Beyblade verse, Rago is capable via Diablo Nemesis of absorbing the power of his opponent and gaining their abilities. He can also gain the abilities and power of everyone that opponent has fought from the beginning to the present.
Despite this, Pluto states that Nemesis has the power of every bey in the world by the time he and Rago do battle with the Legendary Bladers and company. It opens the door to a potential trickle down effect that would go on and on. It makes Rago's main ability one of the most horrifying in any verse.
This got me thinking about another potential trickle down that could be applied to another overpowered deity. This one being of light rather than destruction. Galeem. Due to the incredible amount of crossovers and cameos that can be traced via some path to someone within the Super Smash Bros verse, there's a disturbing amount of verses that are almost certainly reduced to non-existence alongside everyone that ever existed within that verse by the Lord of Light and it's "Everybody Is Dead" attack. That isn't counting restoring the verses back into existence and shuffling them while everyone in them become mindless slaves. Even the verses with stages, Mii outfits and music have potential to be completely screwed. A scenario like this would represent the absolute highest limit of Galeem's power...

GOTG Review: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
This is the next game in my Backlog Roulette series, where each month I spin a wheel to randomly select a game on my massive backlog that I must play (though not necessarily to completion). These wheel spins occur on the monthly preview episodes I co-host with my friends on The Casual Hour podcast.
If you know me at all, you know I love Intelligent Systems. They’re a developer who has made some of my favorite games and franchises of all time — Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Pushmo, WarioWare, Paper Mario, the Super Nintendo port of SimCity, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. With this many bangers, you start to think they just can’t miss. But they can miss. And sometimes, they miss hard.
Tumblr media
Shadow president Lincoln is one of the few high points.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is one of those hard misses. On paper, the pitch is compelling: a 3DS turn-based strategy game where you take a steampunky, alt-history crew of folklorish and literature legends led by Abraham Lincoln, and fight off an incoming alien invasion. I mean, that sounds so bombastically dumb and fun. And then you start playing it.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is not fun to play. It’s closest analog would be something like Valkyria Chronicles (a series I haven’t loved, despite really wanting to), where you navigate levels and make attacks from a third-person, behind-the-back view. It works in Valkyria Chronicles, games you play on a TV or on the luxurious screen of a PlayStation Vita. On the 3DS (even an XL), the cramped conditions make for a frustrating time.
Tumblr media
Valkyria Chronicles' behind the back works just fine when you got the screen real estate to handle it.
Valkyria Chronicles also has the benefit of an overhead map you can pull up any time (y’know, in case you want to do some strategy in your strategy video game). Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. does not, forcing you to memorize a quick fly-through of a level before dumping you in. The game’s director, Paul Patrashcu, says this was to “remove abstraction” and make the game more like a shooter, thinking this would be approachable to players new to strategy games. I don’t know what mapless shooters Paul’s talking about here. Maps are all over shooters, Paul. Put a map in your fucking video game.
But Code Name does bring over one of Valkyria’s worst mechanics fully intact: Enemy overwatch. You see, even though both games are technically turn-based, you are able to move around your characters in pseudo realtime on your turn. Enemies can’t move on your turn, but if you walk into their sight lines, they can and absolutely will shoot at you. And unlike a game like XCOM where overwatch is procc’d once and then it’s over, in Code Name, they’ll just keep doing it until you walk out of their sight, kill them or end your turn. On one hand, it is fair (a number of your fighters have overwatch capabilities too), but it does expose another problem players of Code Name will have to deal with: Weapon ranges…or the lack thereof.
Tumblr media
Seen here: Tom Sawyer about to get overwatched to fucking death.
You see, enemies inherently know their own ranges, so they’ll shoot as soon as you walk within it. But your weapons don’t really have an explicitly-stated range. Instead, as you inch closer to foes, you’ll eventually see their names and health bars pop up. That’s generally when you can start hitting your shots, but you can definitely still miss, especially for guns that shoot multiple shots per attack. There are no indicators for how and when this will happen, just a hidden dice roll that will sometimes bend you over at random. Some weapons, like artillery explosives or pounce attacks do give you a trajectory indicator, but those weapons can’t use overwatch, so they’re more situational in use and can’t be relied upon entirely.
Tumblr media
Weapon ranges are too abstract, except the ones for artillery apparently.
But what’s it really matter anyway when you don’t know how effective your shots will be even if they do connect? Sure, you can see an enemy’s health bar, and you can also see how much of a chunk you’ll take out of it will a full hit, but you’re only given a hard number for your damage when you hit, and you’re never given any numbers about the enemies’ health. OK, my Eagle Rifle can do 25 damage per bullet, and yeah, if I squint my eyes at the tiny health bar on the tiny screen, that looks like it might be taking off about 30% of their HP, but we’re dealing with some very fuzzy math here, which leads to more shrugging and guessing than calculating and risking. It’s a system built on almost entirely on feel, which isn’t ideal when your game feels awful. Is basic subtraction also too abstract, Paul?
There are lots of other annoyances as well. Enemy turns take forever (even after the dev patched in a speed up switch after launch), and because you have no tactical map of any kind, you mostly spend enemy turns looking at walls or empty hallways as the game moves patrols around for 10-20 seconds every time. The presentation is grating, with the same voice clip yelling “PLAYER TURN” and “ENEMY TURN” at the beginning of Every. Single. Turn. The character design is fine, I guess. The Silver Age comic look’s big, black outlines do help to make the models pop on the small screen. But also, the first two characters they give you are Henry Fleming (based on the character in The Red Badge of Courage), and the folk hero John Henry. Why they give you two guys both named Henry right off the bat, I have no idea, but it is stupid and confusing when someone yells “Henry,” and I don’t know who they’re talking about, which they do a lot in the beginning of the game.
Tumblr media
Ah yes, swords: The perfect weapon in a shooting game.
Because this game is on the 3DS and is made by Intelligent Systems, it does have some amiibo support. You can scan in four different Fire Emblem amiibo (the four that were out at the time of the game’s development: Marth, Ike, Robin and Lucina) to get their corresponding playable characters in Code Name. For a bunch of sword fighters, they do surprisingly well in fights, but they do have a very odd drawback. If any of the Fire Emblem characters die in a mission, they leave your team completely and can’t come on another mission unless you scan that amiibo again. I can’t decide if that’s a permadeath reference for a core mechanic in Fire Emblem games or if that’s a way to encourage you buy the amiibo rather than just borrowing them from a friend one time to unlock the goodies, but either way, I can tell you it’s very annoying to have to carry around four amiibo on the off chance one of them bites it while you’re out and about.
I think it’s admirable to try and make a strategy game that is accessible and approachable for people unfamiliar with the genre. But this isn’t it. Mario + Rabbids is that. Marvel Snap is that. Fire Emblem: Awakening and Advance Wars are that. SteamWorld Heist is that (it even has “steam” in the title, making Code Name: S.T.E.A.M somehow even more irrelevant.)
Tumblr media
Play SteamWorld Heist instead. It's so much better!
Look, if you couldn’t tell by now, I think this game is pretty awful in almost every aspect. It’s very funny that Ulysses S. Grant can interact with Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, and Tom Sawyer can ask questions about the Necronomicon, but the game all this silly bullshit is attached to is a boring, unintuitive and vague mess. I am baffled how a developer as good at making strategy games as Intelligent Systems is could make something so bad. And I hope I never have to think about it again.

This list also includes updates for digital only games, such as the Nintendo Badge Arcade, a game that will both be unobtainable and unplayable (legally) after March. (I may update this list to reflect these games later, but don’t count on it). This also includes updates for games like Animal Crossing
The listed requirements were generally taken from the eshop, (although I did have to take a couple of entries from the Data Management section of my 3DS). This is relevant because the listed requirements on the eshop are generally 1 to 3 blocks higher than their actual size. For example, according to the eshop the Shovel Knight update requires 1378 blocks of storage, but according to the Data Management section of System Settings it only takes up 1376 blocks.
If you are reading this before March 27th and are looking for other eshop exclusives to obtain, this video has some good recommendations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXWz3cSGFe8 . There’s plenty of freeware, but you can also add money to your 3DS account by linking it to a My Nintendo Account and using the shop menu in your Account Settings. You can also add funds via your Switch account (if it’s linked to My Nintendo) or by searching games on Nintendo’s website and buying them there.

What 6/10 or lower game are you willing to defend
What 6/10 or lower game are you willing to defend We've all heard of the usual "underated" or "hidden gems" that are 7/10 at worse, what is a truly mixed or low rated game you enjoy and will defend?Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is an ok turn base tactical game, but the idea that Abraham Lincoln is going to save Oz while flying a blimp is crazy enough to give it a try.Pokemon Rangers is very much what pokemon needs, spinoff of select pokemon doing something unique besides throwing pokeballs and collecting them all. This game gives a decent challenge and isn't terribly long that it is worth trying. Submitted May 24, 2024 at 07:35PM by Riovas https://ift.tt/FJtfbRO via /r/gaming

This is a Valkyria Chronicles-style shooter tactics game where you play as a steampunk Civil War soldier and shoot aliens. It was compatible with amiibo of four different Fire Emblem characters, allowing you to summon Marth, Ike, Robin, or Lucina as playable characters. It also gave us these rocking tracks.

I like so many things that got slandered in some way that I'm pretty sure I'm missing some, nearly forgot Code Name S.T.E.A.M despite having an actual grudge over the treatment it got.
Anyway no this is not the space to talk about how much you hate someone or something in this image.
New image trend idea: "My slandered faves"
You put all of your favorite media and characters that are slandered either in terms of quality or (for characters) morality together.
