Some people are so defensive of their own identity that they let it infect the way they “encourage” people to explore their own. On Reddit I’m watching a former lesbian be torn to shreds that she identified as a lesbian for 10 years and now realizes she’s bisexual, but what I’m complaining about goes a bit deeper than that.
One of the very few supporting voices she’s getting is someone reassuring her that sexuality is fluid and that she wasn’t “faking being a lesbian” as she was worried about. IMMEDIATELY someone feels the need to chime in “Actually my sexuality isn’t fluid and sexuality being fluid is a harmful lie.”
I try to (kindly) pump the brakes on that. Sure, not everyone’s sexuality is fluid, I know mine isn’t, but human sexuality in general can change, it is fluid. I don’t know what the point of trying to assert that *your* (currently) unchanging sexuality is the basis of all sexuality.
I see young lesbians flock to this subreddit and say things like “I feel like I might be a lesbian but I’ve dated men and feel like I’m not allowed to be a lesbian” and “I’ve identified as a lesbian my entire life but now my partner is transitioning and I’m still attracted to him, what does that mean?” Which is heartbreaking because the answer *is* that sexuality is fluid. Maybe you did enjoy dating men at one point and don’t anymore. Maybe you aren’t attracted to men, but you can make an exception for a transitioning man you’ve already established a relationship with. You shouldn’t be responsible for defining today who you might be in 10 years.
Yet the idea that someone else’s sexuality could be fluid is so abhorrent to *you* that you want to come up with these myths made up entirely by you that fluid sexuality is not, nor should be viewed as the norm.

If you're at work in a retail or hospitality environment and you see a sex worker with a client... no you didn't.
If your boss asks you if you think that person's a sex worker, you tell them you do not believe that. You don't report their presence to anyone. You don't joke about it with a coworker. You don't eavesdrop or bother them.
We're working the same as you are. Leave us alone!

The only way in which selling sex is exceptional as a form of work is that it involves having sex.
Sex work is not more emotionally intimate than all other forms of work. Emotional intimacy can be involved in therapy, care work, and writing about deeply personal topics.
Sex work is not the only form of work which can involve genital contact. This happens in medical environments, care work and when giving genital piercings.
Sex work is not uniquely dangerous. Fishing, construction and underwater welding all have high fatality and injury rates.
Sex work is not more prone to trafficking than all other forms of work. People are trafficked in huge numbers in the agricultural industry and for the manufacture of textiles.
Sex work is not the only form of work which involves frequent sexual harassment. People are often sexually harassed whilst doing bar work, waiting tables and providing health care and social assistance.
Sex work is not the only type of work that is criminalized. Other types of work like busking without a license, drug dealing, con artistry and any kind of job which requires authorisation form a third party where that isn't obtained.
Stop it with the sex work exceptionalism! Treat it like other work.

Preview of Basilisk, my personal favorite of my risograph comics, and the project all my other recent medieval-inspired art descends from.
Styled after medieval illuminated manuscripts and printed using a custom color palette requiring 5 risograph inks (including metallic gold), Basilisk asks the question: what would drive a teenage girl to create a monster?
Physical copies available here. To brag for a moment--this is my masterwork of riso printing and is even more impressive in person.
