Techno Metropolis [BETA] Chapter 1

The end of the last class of the day marked the beginning of a new after school afternoon for Elektro.. Or just an average after school afternoon. Elektro tried to recount the few homework assignments that were due the next day as they overheard their classmates talking about some random chatter he couldn’t block out of his attention if he tried.

He pulled out his phone to check their texts from his friends, texting them to ask what homework they had, possibly out of boredom, but he wondered if tonight would be one of those nights where they could call to work on homework together.

After they got home, Elektro relished the fact that none of his homework assignments were due the next day, and the only ones that were, he had completed in class. This left Elektro to his own devices, quite literally, as they had until he got too sleepy to stay up to do whatever he felt like, browsing their carefully curated tumblr feed filled with posts about his favorite cartoons and video games.

As usual, Elektro soon got sucked into this, reblogging and liking nearly every post he came across, forgetting to drink their lemonade he poured for himself earlier to not forget. The usual. Eventually, he looked away from the screen of his Ipad and processed that he had a headache for a while and chugged the drink on his table. Within a minute, he began to feel better, but he remembered something else after his mind was cleared.

He wasn’t entirely sure what he remembered, but the sense of Deja-vu made him wander his eyes around his table to a piece of paper he’d used to write down a code he found off of the internet. He remembered it was related to this obscure blog that was recommended to him. It did not have many posts, but it promoted some kind of work-in-progress indie game being developed, or maybe it was some kind of platform like Roblox where you could hang out with friends but without the numerous and overwhelming predatory tactics aimed at unsuspecting kids wanting to play.

Sometime after he found the blog, it provided a link that would launch said game/platform. It would require a code generated from an invite to play, and Elektro had previously received one from a mutual of his. They wrote down the code for him to use later, and since he was free for a while and his mom had already gone to bed, this was the perfect time to use it.

Elektro went back to the link to the game/platform whatever it was that he had bookmarked to save. When he accessed the link, it loaded for a few seconds, and then displayed some text.

The moment Elektro pressed the button to enter, he could not understand why his finger stuck to the screen, but he then felt his whole self being pulled into the screen of his Ipad, and everything around him was dark.

. . . . .

Elektro first felt the vague feeling that he was falling, like the kind of thing that you feel before you fall asleep. Elektro could feel it was dark even with his eyes closed, but he was scared to open them. He curled into himself as he continued to fall.

When he came to, he found himself on the ground.. somewhere. He slowly opened his eyes as he realized he was not in any pain, just feeling like he woke up from a dream. They remembered what happened as he saw what was around him. He was laying on a white, circular platform in a larger circular platform with others inside it. There were cyan message boards surrounding the platforms.

“What.. in the…”

“Where.. Oh my gosh”

As Elektro got up, he observed himself and the new clothes that had appeared on him. The dark green hoodie and jeans he was wearing before were gone.

“Woah.. oh my goshhhh.. OH MY GOSH!”

“I’ve always wanted to wear something like this!!!”

He was now wearing a dark blue hoodie with a bright indigo hood and vertical stripe down the middle with white/cyan mid-length sleeves that matched his new pants of the same color. On his wrists were red bracelets and on his ankles yellow ones of a similar shape. He also had black, fingerless gloves under them and black shoes with white on the bottom and toe tip.

“Wait, what the-”

From the back of his hoodie two long ribbons extended and flowed freely. Elektro could almost feel them moving on their own, but he felt he could control them a little himself.

“Heheh.. That’s kinda cool..”

“Alright uhh.. Where the heck am I?”

Elektro read the message boards in front of him.

[ This place exists in a pocket dimension developed with the intention of creating a safe space for anyone to hang out with friends, roam around, and chill out. ]

[ You can bring anything from the original reality here, as long as it does not violate any of the community guidelines. Notably, you may bring food, devices, school work, or personal belongings as long as you remember to not forget it here ensuring it does not get lost or stolen. There is a Lost and found room where anything you lose ends up, so if anything is lost you can find it there. ]

[ This place also is not limited to just an efficient study hall, but also as a playground, art space, and more in development! ]

[ You may have also noticed you have notably new clothes that you may have never owned before; these clothes have been created from the deepest desires of how you wish to present and wear, and we hope that you enjoy them! An in-depth clothes shop is being developed for you to modify these clothes however you like in more ways, but you may do what you like with them for now. ]

[ If you have just entered for the first time, your phone and/or device used for entry are in the box nearby. You will also be given a warp device that can send you to important areas of entry quickly. It will also allow you to leave whenever you need to. [Time passes the same way it does outside of this pocket dimension, so be mindful of your time and contact whoever you need to let them know you are here. Pocket dimensions like these are a recent development, and people are still getting used to it.] ]

“Oh, there’s my stuff.”

Elektro collected his phone and Ipad from the box nearby and observed the warp device in his hand. It looked like a small remote with a stick for directional inputs that could be clicked in for a select input. Elektro clicked in the stick and it displayed the names of some areas and an option to “transform into complimentary gift”. He selected it and the warp device became functional noise-cancelling headphones that matched his outfit.

“No way, I get noise-cancelling headphones too?? What a lifesaver!”

Elektro read the rest of the message board.

Elektro clicked into a button on his headphones that turned on the warp device and selected to go to the main area.

Before they knew it, Elektro appeared in a large city-like area with large roads and tall buildings all around. It reminded him of the tall buildings in the city they would often drive by on the trip from his dad’s house to his mom’s. The area also reminded him more of the lively city squares that made up the lobby areas of his favorite video game series. He found himself in the middle of an intersection with what looked like a few establishments.

They looked unfinished, since some buildings were still being developed. There were two large buildings in front of him. The building on the left looked like a library, the study hall, and the other on the right was a designated art studio. There were no cars driving through the intersection, but there were some vehicles around that looked only like props that were scattered around the area. There were some more message boards scattered around that seemed to display information about the establishments there.

Elektro wasn’t particularly interested in working on homework or drawing at the moment, so he didn’t read the message boards this time. He was in the mood for running though, and the road in front of him was the most clear of other people walking in them.

They began sprinting ahead, getting glimpses of other people hanging out together or just chilling out in random spots, probably here to unwind from any possible harsh reality that they came from.

He began sprinting faster because he felt like it, seeing the various buildings pass by and watching other people running through the roads too. They drifted at turns quickly, imagining himself playing mario kart, and before he knew it, he started running into and then up a building. He reached the top and flung into the air reaching a considerable height, as if he had used the building as a ramp. He watched in awe as they saw many of the buildings below him. They landed on the top of the building easily, feeling little to no pain from it. When he stood up, he processed what had just happened. Sort of.

“Woah.. what.. “

“What did I just DO?!?”

“I JUST.. I JUST SCALED A BUILDING LIKE A RAMP!”

Elektro recalled the strange remark on one of the message boards back in the lobby he first entered in. It said something about excess energy usually stored in his body to manifest in some way, MAYYBEEEE this was how?????

“Damn… And that landing didn't hurt at all. Maybe there was something on those message boards back there that I missed…”

“I do feel a bit winded though, so that’s normal. This place probably only enhances a person’s individual agility to a certain amount.”

Elektro walked over near the edge of the building as he sat cross- legged looking at the digital sky. The view was somewhat nice as the sky was a dark indigo color, and Elektro could faintly make out a light blue grid pattern that replaced the occasional stars of the light-polluted night sky. A replica of the moon was also visible, probably showing the same phase and placement it would be where Elektro came from, he thought. It was around 8:30 pm when Elektro had first entered, and the sun had already gone down by then. Not much time had passed since then, evidenced by Elektro checking the time on his phone.

He wondered when he would get to hang out with his friends here, especially with transportation completely out of the way. They could possibly all meet up at the same time if that was the case! Elektro smiled excitedly at the thought of just getting to see his friends here, especially Spectra and Razzi, since they haven’t interacted in person much since they graduated from middle school. Star though, he could see her in person at break time if they both weren’t busy, but they didn’t do much together other than that. Elektro and his friends always kept in touch through text, but it wasn’t the same as meeting up in person. Elektro hadn’t seen Razzi at all since middle school.. Should he bring something for them? What would they want to have? It probably would be ok if Elektro didn’t bring anything, but maybe he could share some oranges.. Wait, would they be ok with having oranges? Elektro knew Star was ok with sweet things and Spectra didn’t really have many food preferences, but they couldn’t remember what Razzi was ok with. Elektro was sure they told him at one point! Why did he have to forget such a potentially important detail-

Elektro noticed he was twitching his foot and beginning to pick at his fingers. He realized he did not have any fidget toys with them. They let out a sigh and muttered an annoyed “dang it.”

Elektro wished he had a piece of clay to play with so he wouldn’t have to pick at his fingers. The clay was soft and he could squish it easily without much effort, smooth it out, fold it, whatever his hands felt like. If only it didn’t get all over his fingers..

They could almost imagine perfectly what it would feel like to have it in his hand without it getting his hands dirty. It nearly felt as if it was really in his hands and they were playing with it.

He looked down at his hands. There was a bright green material the same color as his body exhibiting a slight glow with the exact texture of the clay he was thinking of in his hands.

“. . .”

“HUH?!?”

Elektro kept playing with the material. So many new things had been happening to him since he came here that he just couldn’t resist playing with such a familiar material. This was probably what the message board meant by excess energy manifesting in different ways. The spontaneous creation of a near perfect replica of a thing so familiar to Elektro had to be unique to him.

Elektro thought about different slimes he had played with before, and was able to shift the texture of the material to that, stretching it and squishing it further. They thought of the textures of plastic, rubber, wood, and metal, and the material changed to each one as he thought of them.

Then he imagined a specifically solid material, and then extended the material into a narrow cylinder shape like a pen. They twiddled with it for a second, and then imagined it having the exact shape of a pen, and it conformed, now having a distinctly softer cap part with a long part on the side that stops it from rolling off a surface.

He then turned the material into a rubber ball. He tossed it not high from his hand a couple times, and impulsively threw it at the roof of the building, bouncing it. They did this a couple times until he failed to catch it and it rolled away from him. They began to reach out to grab it but immediately it came back to his hand like a magnet. Huh.

He squished it again back into its original clay texture. That was certainly interesting. And satisfying. They continued to squish and fold the clay material. He separated the clay material into four parts. They smiled as they looked at each piece.

“I think I know just the thing to give to my friends.”
