Hi! This snake is for sale in my local pet shop (UK). I know very little about snakes but read that they can look wrinkly while shedding, and I think she is, from the little rough patches? Every time I see her I worry. Should I say something to the staff or does she look normal?

It's normal for snakes to look a little wrinkly during shedding, but this goes beyond normal. Do you see the areas where the shed skin is lifting up? That tells us that she's too dehydrated to shed properly. I can also see patches of shed on the substrate - shedding in patches is never normal or a good sign for a snake, it often means that husbandry is inappropriate.

The aspen substrate is another red flag. Ball pythons need medium-high humidity, and aspen is a very substrate. Something like coconut husk or cypress mulch - any humidity-retaining substrate - would be much more appropriate.

Unfortunately, I think you're right to be worried here! A dehydrated ball python can easily develop respiratory infections and other health issues. If you can, trying to mention that she looks dehydrated to the staff could really help this poor snake out. Even just swapping the substrate for something more appropriate could go a long way.

Coco de Mer

In centuries past the Coco de Mer (Lodoicea maldivica) was known only from empty or rotted pods that had floated across the waters from the then-uninhabited Seychelles Islands, located in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar.

The coconuts falling from the trees which ended up in the sea would usually be carried eastwards by the prevailing sea currents to the Maldives (whence their name).  As the un-germinated nuts are heavier than water they cannot float, so the species habitat is limited to their native islands. 

On the tree, the coconut is a giant green orb, but inside, with the outer husk removed, it closely resembles a pair of female human buttocks.  Because of this resemblance one of the archaic botanical names was Lodoicea callipyge, in which callipyge is from Greek words meaning ‘beautiful buttocks’.  In modern Seychelles creole, the fruit is called 'coco fesse’ — which crudely translates as 'butt nut’.  Because of their unique shape and size (the largest nut in the world) the shells of these nuts have been prized by many cultures for centuries, and the species habitat is now part of a world heritage site and the sale and harvesting of the nuts is carefully monitored.  

The nut can weigh up to 45 lbs., it takes two years to germinate, and seven years from the fertilization of the female fruit until their maturity.  The trees can grow to be either male of female, and the female tree can bear fruit for the first time when it is about twenty-five years old, though it takes about one-hundred years for the female palm to reach her full mature height of 100 feet or so.  The male trees grow about twenty-five percent taller.

In my hometown, that guy was Ron.

I don’t know what his official education may have been, but I do know that he has been around the block a few times when it came to reptiles.

He once told my father and I a story about how, as a 12-year-old in the 60s, he got “some chameleon eggs for almost nothing, because nobody was very good at hatching chameleons back then and didn’t think they’d be worth raising.” You know who was apparently pretty good at hatching chameleons though, even in the 60s? Ron. As he told it, he had one hell of a time explaining to his parents 1) why there were 60-some-odd baby chameleons loose in the bathroom and 2) what the hell he was going to do about it. He credited “a lot of research about chameleons and,” – he emphasized this – “their native habitat” for his success in not just hatching all those eggs, but also keeping the majority alive long enough to be past the riskiest parts of life and safely rehomed. He then told us he got a license to import exotic reptiles at age 15 – before he could even drive.

I don’t know what all-else Ron did between then and the point at which he “retired” to owning and operating a reptile store with his wife, Donna; but, I do know that Ron’s Reptiles was, if not the best, my favorite pet store of all time.

Ron and Donna ran the store out of their home on the rural edge of town. It was out of the way to get to and inside it was rather cramped and, perhaps expectedly, smelled like reptiles (which is not a bad or dirty scent, but one of coconut husk and aspen shavings and the specific and peculiar musk of shed skin). It was not a very large home and you could see into their livingroom and kitchen through one of the rooms; I got to meet their dogs over the small gate they had set up so they could easily move between the two when their scattered customers showed up. In this not-very-large home the two front rooms were the two officially open to the public during business hours.

As you would walk in the front door you’d be met with a shallow hallway, with primarily merchandise – enclosures, decor, packaged foods – and their living area to the right and the majority of animals to the left. Both rooms were fun to explore and most – if not all – of their own animals were also out on display, with name-plates and descriptions on their enclosures instead of sale-prices. Even more fun could be had, though.

Because, if they weren’t too busy and you asked nicely, both Ron and Donna were always happy to give you a reptile experience.

They might open up some of the adult, breeding animals’ enclosures and introduce you; because every one had a name and a story. They might give you some lettuce and let you feed the huge sulcata tortoises or the puppy-dog rhino iguana. On extra special occasions, they might let you in to see the eggs and newest hatchlings in the back, or take you outside to tour the rodent sheds.

And, of course, Ron’s Reptiles could also be hired for those ever-memorable reptile parties and classroom talks.

Every interaction I ever had with Ron – at his store, the local reptile show (which he founded, btw), or one of his educational talks – it was crystal clear exactly how very much he loved reptiles and how excited he was for the opportunity to share his knowledge and experiences and joy with anyone and everyone. He was even once on the front page of the Wall Street journal talking about his snakes.

Ron’s Reptiles closed a few years ago – Ron was having a tough time running everything by himself after Donna passed. He moved to Arizona not long after – to be closer to his children and grandchildren, I believe – and he let many of his animals go in the process. I don’t know what he’s up to now, but some of his animals are still being used as animal ambassadors in my hometown. Living-torches passed down to a new team of educators working to dispel myths and spread a love of reptiles amongst new generations of children.

Children who will wake up one day and wonder, “who even was that? what were their credentials?”

Card Survival: Tropical Island

It’s a very by-the-numbers title, which frankly fits the game pretty well because there’s a lot about the game that is similarly straightforward in execution.

This is one of those games that brings me back to the “what is a card in a game context” question, as in this case it’s “anything represented by a 3.5x2.5 shape” which I can’t declare wrong but is dramatically more broad than how I’d define it.

To me, for something to feel like a card in a game it’s gotta need to be a card. The two things that make that for me are if it has a hidden state (that is, the thing can be face down, or in a hand) or if it can be shuffled. Without either of those...well, is the D&D Minis wargame a card game? There’s a card for every creature type, and you reference the cards constantly when playing. But everyone’s clear that it’s a miniatures game. You could copy the cards onto a stat sheet and it���d work the same way.

CSTI has randomization! The randomization even spits out events, items, and locations. But it doesn’t feel like cards because you’re filling up a progress bar rather than emptying out a deck.

All queries about whether Card Survival is really “a card game” aside, this is an interesting little sim and survival game. Like many survival titles it has a series of needs or troubles noted on the left, such as being sunburned, cold, hungry, thirsty, queasy, stressed, or any other number of maladies. A lot of the time you can pit some of your problems against one another. If you’re overheated you can go spearfishing, which will get you totally soaked in the cold ocean water while you try to get a fish. If you’re too cold, perhaps this is a good time to venture into the hot jungle and explore. It’ll take you a little longer to get overheated that way. There’s also some neat little true-to-life stuff, like how eating lemongrass isn’t super filling but does make you mildly repellant to bugs. Or how the thing that stops you from subsisting entirely on coconut meat and milks is that it’ll give you the runs. Most of the combinations of objects are fairly reasonable too. If you want a sharpened stone, you just need a normal stone, another stone (same size or a big one, doesn’t matter) and time. A sharpened stone can also sharpen a long branch into a rudimentary spear, or you can take fibers from the coconut husks, make cord, and put the cord, sharpened stone, and long branch together for a better spear.

My biggest issue with the game is how much information is present-but-obscured. It makes things feel at once overwhelming (you can click on the “more information” button on an invention to get way too much information) and insufficient (it’s easy to miss things you should have known because you didn’t happen to read a few lines three clicks away from the main UI). There’s something realistic - albeit still kind of obnoxious - about missing a possible interaction between two objects because you had so much stuff piled on the beach that you didn’t see the second object when you had the first selected. But the reverse of this problem is also possible - I made a grass skirt before realizing I’d started the game already wearing one. And I ended up with three wood drill firestarters because I accidentally clicked the sticks with the sharp rock a couple times. If the game could include some commonsense QoL confirmation buttons (such as flagging items you probably only need one of, and then marking a haveOne boolean if you already have one, and having a popup asking if you really want to make this if it’s on that list and haveOne is true) it’d help a bit. The big issue I mention above is a deeper issue and I don’t really have a fix; They’d need custom smart interactions for almost every card combination, and I totally understand an indie dev not having the time for that.

I’m having fun. Considering the competition, though, I’m not sure it’s a bargain even at the current sale price of $20. Kind of a tough call. I think if you’re into turn-based games and survival games it could be worthwhile.

What do they smell like?

Mattsukawa: He showers a lot to get the work smell off him- Smoky sage and white musk are the main scents in his cologne. Gives gentle, firm hugs that cage your entire shoulders.

Hanamaki: cucumber water and rosehip oil. He nurtures his skin. Lazy side grabbing hugger.

Yahaba: Mint. Aggressively like spearmint. Even his sweat is minty. Will grab your shoulders and pull you in for a quick, tight hug.

Kyōtani: Inexplicably like pipe tobacco??? He doesn't smoke. It's probably a cologne, but like... No one's sure. Breif, tight hugs from him. Sometimes one armed.

Ennoshita: The clinical doctors office smell never really leaves, but neither does the light green tea scent he drinks. Likely to pop your back if he hugs you like a goddamned chiropractor.

Kunimi: cucumber melon body lotion. Weak shitty hugs AND he bunches up the back of your jacket with his hands, but he smiles at you when he breaks away.

Akiteru: Citrus! He's fresh! He's zesty! He puts lemon essential oils on his dryer balls. Tight hugger, really grips you and shakes you a lil.

Kindaichi: Axe body wash and deodorant AND spray. You are GOING to smell the cloud of Ambassador© a solid minute before he walks into the room. Strong but short lived hugs. (Longer ones would make your eyes water.)

Takeda: Like barley tea and ink pens. Crispy fresh laundry scent is embedded in his cardigans, so if you like laundromats, give him a squeeze. Not likely to initiate a hug but returns them gently and with genuine joy.

Fukunaga: Like he's been frying bacon! Frycook smell. Restaurant back of house smell. A lil sweaty when he hugs you but he makes a joke about it so you never really mind. Known to improvise elaborate handshakes on a whim.

Taketora: Sweat. Black ice soap and aftershave if he's just showered. Slaps your back, HARD, when he's finished hugging you.

Koganegawa: He occasionally forgets deodorant, but uses hibiscus dryer sheets and usually smells like those. Will quickly squeeze you when he hugs.

Futakuchi: Like a latte, but the scent changes with the seasons. Lavender in spring, vanilla in summer, pumpkin spice and cinnamon in fall and winter. Bumps into your side and slides into the hug.

Semi: This guy. Leather and rosemary. Smoky, like it's incense he's been burning and not something he put on intentionally. Never lets the hug go on for too long.

Goshiki: Surprisingly sophisticated. Oak and cinnamon from an expensive name brand cologne he impulse purchased during an after-Christmas sale. Is just radiating heat up close when you're in his arms.

Komori: Sort of fruity. Coconut mango body wash will do that. Short and simple hugger, whacks you on the back when he's done.

Aran: Delightful. Has cologne contract obligations, but he'd smell like them regardless. It's a smooth amber scent with a touch of something floral, classy and masculine with a hint of sweetness. Smooths a palm up and down your back when hugging.

Kita: Like rice husk and old pine boards, hard work and sweat and sunshine. A little dusty- when he hugs there might be a little milled rice flour left behind on your back. Hugs firm and solid and really connects with you.

Suna: Sandalwood and almond and juniper. Part cologne, part something else- he won't tell you no matter how much you ask and it's driving everyone completely insane. Likes to sneak up from behind to hug.

Atsumu: Tonka bean & anise cologne.... Sweet and dark. Raises his arms like a bear before he hugs you, likely to rock you around a little before he lets you go with another squeeze.

Hoshiumi: CAMPHOR BODY SPRAY. Usually kind of sticky. He WILL pick you up when he hugs you. This is a threat.
