White-nosed Coati Nasua narica
7/25/2023 Valle Escondido Preserve, Costa Rica
This was the only time we saw a coati while we were in Costa Rica, and it just popped out of nowhere right in front of us, trotted casually across the path, and disappeared into the forest on the other side. We saw it for maybe 10 seconds, and thankfully were able to snap a couple photos before it was gone. Very cool to see one in the wild!

animals with ringed tails, my beloved
sorry about how cropped the iguana photo is (a lot of the photos I found were too horizontal or too vertical), here is the iguana’s tail

South American coati! Related to raccoons, and similarly omnivorous - their diet consists mainly fruit, invertebrates, small animals, and bird eggs.
[ID: an illustration of a coati facing to the left, walking with its long, striped tail held upright. It is on a textured blue background with banana flowers, leaves, and fruit. End.

Okay, I wanna talk about the Coatimundi (often shortened to Coati)
Tumblr media
They're in the same family as raccoons (Procyonidae) and live across South America all the way up to the lowest parts of the Southwestern United States
Tumblr media
They're diurnal (active during the day), unlike raccoons and walk plantigrade (on the soles of their feet) like raccoons, bears, and humans
Tumblr media
The thing that's wild to me about them, though, is that they have double jointed ankles that allow them to LITERALLY REVERSE THEIR ANKLES
Tumblr media
They use it for climbing as it makes it easier for them to descend from the trees they often enjoy living in head first
Tumblr media
So now you know about the raccoon's daytime cousin with reversible ankles
