Clyfford Still
Clyfford Still had a unique artistic vision and was unwilling to compromise it for money or recognition. As he evolved as an artist, Still’s works transitioned from recognizable images and landscapes to more abstract shapes, colours, and lines to express ideas and feelings on huge canvases. He wanted people to get lost in his works and make their own interpretations of his art.
‘My paintings have no titles because I do not wish them to be considered illustrations or pictorial puzzles’, Still wrote. ‘If properly made visible they speak for themselves.’

“The Call Home,” 1895, by Augustus Vincent Tack, is an impressive example of AMERICAN Impressionism by a man who studied with LaFarge and Twachtman and who visited Monet in Giverny. But what we found interesting is that this painter, so conventional in his early career, would transition to a kind of pre-abstraction in his later career. Indeed, many consider him a forbearer of abstract expressionism and colorfield painting and an influence on artists as diverse as Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman and the Washington Color School. There are 40 of his works in the Phillips Collection. @phillipscollection #augustusvincenttack #impressionism #paintingoftheday #clyffordstill #americanimpressionism #washingtoncolorschool #barnettnewman #abstractexpressionism #colorfieldpainting https://www.instagram.com/p/CNBqplIheln/?igshid=1w5wgg0r6b1xk

Assignment #5: Individual Research on Abstract Art  & Artists.
Tumblr media
Artist: Clyfford Still
Title: PH-489 (1944)
Medium: Oil on paper
Themes: Abstract, Color, Painting
Tumblr media
Artist: Clyfford Still
Title: PH-929 (1974)
Medium: Oil on canvas
Themes: Abstract, Black and white, Painting
Clyfford Still’s works are very abstract and make you wonder what the image is supposed to represent and why. This is a very interesting take on oil paintings as many people are drawn towards making representational and noticeable images. Clyfford leaves the best port to your imagination. What your perception sees could be different from the person standing next to you looking at the same thing. In a way, these paintings could be compared to Rorschach tests. “what do you see here?” This connects to me because sometimes I couldn’t begin to explain what my art is, but rather leave it up to interpretation. Though Rorschach tests are a psychological test and this is art, I don’t think they’re far off from being one in the same. The abstract themes allow the viewer to see something that may be unique, but could also be seen by the vast majority of others - maybe even see nothing at all.

Artist: Bridget Riley
Title: Fragment 2 (1965)
Medium: Screenprint on perspex
Themes: Abstract, geometric, illusion
Bridget Riley, through her research on paintings, has created some amazing prints and paintings of her own. These two works demand the viewer to focus and take a deeper look into what they are seeing. Simple shapes like rectangles and crescents can trick the eyes when arranged carefully. These two works, in particular, give the illusion of movement. Of course, these are still pictures; one's vision may be tricked into seeing scale change, wave effects, and vibration. Due to her research, she has effectively made art that may not be what she was working towards but instead found another form. Her background of these pieces relates to me because sometimes when I study up on things, I find myself picking and choosing elements and turning them into something different than the research material itself.
