2024-12-15: Arkansas (Hex 15)
Forests and hills dappled with caves give way to prairies claimed by long-abandoned farmhouses in the distance.
Notable Feature: Diamond Springs (Resource)
Diamond Springs is a roadside attraction that both lives up to its name and is worth a repeat visit. It is a small, privately-owned park on Obadiah and Martha Flatley's land. It consists of two distinct features: a hot springs spa and an open field where anyone can mine for precious stones. It costs $1 to enter the park, and those who spend 4 consecutive hours in either the springs or the field receive the benefit of that part of the park.
Relaxing in the mineralized water (with optional therapeutic mud springs) restores two levels of exhaustion and grants advantage on any checks to resist the fear condition for 24 hours. For those who would prefer to search for rare stones, the field is the eroded remains of a volcanic crater that allows people the chance to find rare stones like diamonds in the soil, as long as you don't use any motorized equipment. At the end of every 4 hours of searching, you find stones worth 1d8-2 dollars. Results of zero or less still produce cool rocks, they just aren't worth anything to a buyer.
Hidden: The Merchant Monk
Secluded from the rest of the world is a a small forgotten abbey that houses a group of Benedictine monks. Brother Dominic works on the grounds doing landscaping work and will tell wholesome but boring stories about monastic life to anyone who will listen. The abbey does not make enough money to maintain the facilities properly, and the monks have been trying different ways to bring some money in. The monks have started brewing beer that's pretty good, but don't have a way to distribute it. Brother Dominic has some family in New Mexico who run a grocery store that might be able to sell some of the beer, but the monastery needs a cost-effective way to get a few cases of samples to New Mexico.
Service Station: Lester's Deals & Fuel
Lester's is located in a prime spot at the halfway point on a long stretch of desolate highway, and it's the only spot to fuel up on that particular stretch of road. The proprietor, Lester Hollingsworth, has tried to maximize the money his customers spend by offering a wide variety of products not normally available in this area and never seen at gas stations. Each time the party visits, there is a new non-perishable item that Lester has bought some wholesale quantity of and has made it available for sale, and the items are available here for cheaper than they would be most other places. Here are some ideas of weird products that might be sold:
Caskets
Modular music synthesizers (Moog started making them in 1964, so it's possible!)
Industrial sized barrel of pesticide
Recumbent bicycles
Imported traditional clothing from Central or South America
Wheelchairs
Items From Other Hexes
Little Rock First Baptist Church from Hex 2 is located here. It has been overtaken by cultists, but the Benedictine monastery (The Merchant Monk, above) has managed to resist an incursion, perhaps because it is so isolated. The Benedictine monks may offer prayers and blessings that can help those working against the cults to resist their malicious effects.
