Trash Talk
By: Madeleine Dale, Lic. Associate R.E. Broker in the West Side Office
Climate change involves complex issues like energy sourcing, the atmospheric content of CO2 ppm, ecosystem destruction, wild life extinction, artic ice melt or anthropocentric warming where the actions of an individual seems to lack consequence. However, a significant opportunity for control lies right under our noses. Garbage is one area where individuals can have a huge collective impact – let’s talk trash.
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY)collects 13,000tons of waste daily, an average 3 pounds per person. 85% of that garbage gets trucked to landfills at a cost of $300 million a year. Landfills account for over 1/3 of the methane emissions in the U.S., as well as the fuel emissions from carting trash as far as Ohio. In 2013, the City expanded recycling programs with the aim of doubling the current 15% rate to 30%. Diverting refuse to reuse alleviates pressure on landfills, cuts carbon emissions brings in revenue from recycling and saves the city $600,000 a year on disposal costs. Recapturing raw materials also prevents habitat destruction, saves endangered species and reduces the carbon footprint which directly ties to climate change. The hurdle is compliance. The honor system offers no tangible rewards for being a good citizen but to make recycling economically viable the current rate has to double. Currently, recycling trucks return to the depot half empty and recycling is only one aspect of DSNY ambitious plans. By 2030, NYC intends to eliminate all waste sent to landfills. 0 x 2030 is a stretch. To reach this goal, City residents will all have to pitch-in.
THINK TWICE AT THE TRASH CAN -- 40% of the current waste stream consists of paper products, from receipts to pizza boxes. Forests are a terrible natural resource to waste especially since paper can be used up to 4 times. In addition to deforestation, paper making is one of the most stressful industries on the environment in terms of water consumption and release of toxic chemicals. Out of sight, out of mind, it is easy to toss paper without thinking; separating those envelopes takes a little effort but makes a difference.
FOOD WASTE -- accounts for 30% of the waste stream, about 11.5 million pounds a day. Contrary to popular perception, restaurants strive toward efficiency and account for a fraction of the waste while about 9 million pounds per day comes from private residents. New Yorkers tend to discard about 20% of their food, which is 1Ž2 the national rate of 40%, but not eligible for bragging rights. The City has initiated programs to divert edibles to people in need, begun curbside compost collection at public schools and offers drop-off sites at farmers’ markets in Manhattan.
BYOB -- Bring your own Bag. Shopping bags only account 8% of the waste stream but have huge environmental repercussions. Disposing of 9 billion bags costs the City $12 million dollars a year. NYC does not have a recycling option, in fact, the plastic film that slithers into the recycling stream clogs equipment, causing delays and damage. Plastic bags also create a huge litter problem, notorious for escaping garbage containers, fluttering into trees, floating down storm drains, colliding with endangered wildlife and carpeting beaches. Plastic makes up 70% of all ocean garbage. Reusable shopping bags come in an assortment of portable options that clip onto purses or gym bags, so there is no excuse not to have one handy.
BYOB -- Bring your own Bottle. Water bottles are another cause for concern, the DSNY collects 800 million a year. Like the bags, the plastic bottles are manufactured from fossil fuels and chemicals that never disintegrate. The containers break into smaller pieces until tiny plastic molecules get absorbed in the soil or the food chain. When BYOB is not an option, at least make the effort to recycle.
AVOID – Like plastic bags, another product which cannot be recycled is polystyrene, the foam used to make coffee cups. DSNY collects more than 28,000 TONS each year; TONS of a substance that weighs practically nothing and flutters out of garbage on the wings of a light breeze. Like plastic, the foam gets around, littering streets, waterways and beaches. Worse than plastic, foam crumbles into bits that get eaten by fish and wildlife. Even worse, when foam is exposed to the UV rays in sunshine it degrades into toxic chemicals. Banning polystyrene cups, plates, containers and packing peanuts is the only prevention. NYC has tried in 2015 but the city law was overturned by a NY State judge.
SHOP LESS, REUSE MORE -- In the modern disposable economy up to 80% of the products purchased end up in the trash after light use. Recycling is not always convenient but shopping smarter, resisting impulse purchases, reusing leftovers, BYOB and taking advantage of city programs to collect clothing, electronics and compost will have a significant impact on the local carbon foot print and the global environment.

Whether you're dealing with a stubborn kitchen sink or a bathroom drain that just won't budge, our comprehensive tips and tricks will ensure your plumbing is running smoothly.
Understanding Common Causes of Clogs
Kitchen Drains
Kitchen drains often get clogged due to a buildup of grease, food particles, and soap residue. To tackle this issue, start by avoiding pouring excess grease down the drain. Instead, dispose of it in a separate container. Regularly flush your kitchen drain with hot water to prevent substances from solidifying.
Bathroom Drains
Hair, soap scum, and toothpaste are the usual culprits for bathroom drain clogs. Installing a hair catcher in your shower and regularly cleaning out the sink stoppers can go a long way in preventing clogs. Additionally, pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drains can help break down accumulated debris.
Utility Room Drains
Utility room drains, often linked to washing machines, can become clogged with lint and detergent residue. To prevent this, install a lint catcher in the washing machine drain hose and clean it regularly. Periodically run hot water down the drain to eliminate any built-up residue.
DIY Methods for Unclogging Drains
1. Baking Soda and Vinegar
This classic and effective method involves pouring a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. The resulting chemical reaction helps break down debris and clear the pipe. After letting it sit for about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.
2. Plunger Power
A plunger is a simple yet powerful tool for unclogging drains. Create a tight seal around the drain and push and pull the plunger vigorously. This action helps dislodge blockages and restore proper water flow.
3. DIY Drain Snake
For more stubborn clogs, consider using a DIY drain snake. Feed it into the drain and rotate it to catch onto debris. Slowly pull it out, removing the clog along with it.

Clogged Drain Emergencies: What to Do When Water Won’t Flow
Are you facing the frustrating and inconvenient issue of a clogged drain in Manhattan NY? Water not flowing down the drain as it should is a common problem that can disrupt your daily routine and lead to a host of other plumbing issues if left unattended. In this comprehensive guide, we, as experienced professionals, will walk you through the steps to address clogged drain emergencies effectively.
Understanding the Causes of Clogged Drains
Before we delve into solutions, it's essential to comprehend the factors that contribute to clogged drains. A clear understanding will help you prevent future blockages more effectively.
1. Accumulated Debris
Over time, debris such as hair, soap scum, food particles, and dirt can accumulate in your drainpipes. This buildup restricts the flow of water and eventually leads to blockages.
2. Grease and Fat Buildup
Pouring grease and fat down the kitchen sink may seem harmless, but it's a significant contributor to clogged drains. These substances congeal and form blockages in your plumbing.
3. Foreign Objects
Sometimes, objects like jewelry, toys, or even toiletries can accidentally find their way into your drains, causing obstructions.
4. Tree Roots
In older properties, invasive tree roots can infiltrate your sewer lines, causing severe blockages that require professional attention.

DIY Solutions for Minor Clogs
When faced with a minor clog, there are several DIY methods you can employ to clear the drain and restore water flow.
1. Plunger
A plunger is a simple yet effective tool for dislodging minor clogs in sinks and toilets. Ensure you have a good seal, then plunge vigorously to create pressure and dislodge the blockage.
2. Baking Soda and Vinegar
This natural remedy can work wonders for minor clogs. Start by pouring a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then flush with hot water.
3. Drain Snake
A drain snake, also known as a plumbing auger, is a handy tool for reaching deep into your pipes to break up and remove clogs. Use it cautiously to avoid damaging your plumbing.
When to Call Manhattan Sewer Drain Services
While DIY solutions can often clear minor clogs, some situations call for professional assistance. Here are some indicators that it's time to reach out to Manhattan Sewer Drain services:
1. Repeated Clogs
If you find yourself dealing with frequent clogs in the same drain, there may be an underlying issue that requires professional inspection.
2. Slow-Draining Water
When water drains at a sluggish pace, it could signal a significant blockage further down the line, which DIY methods may not resolve.
3. Foul Odors
Unpleasant odors emanating from your drains may indicate a more severe problem in your plumbing system.
4. Gurgling Sounds
Gurgling noises coming from your drains can be a sign of trapped air due to blockages. It's crucial to address this issue promptly.
Preventing Future Clogs
After addressing your current clogged drain emergency, it's essential to take preventive measures to avoid such issues in the future.

Using drain screens in your sinks and bathtubs can help catch debris before it goes down the drain, preventing blockages.
2. Regular Maintenance
Consider scheduling routine plumbing maintenance to identify and address potential issues before they become major problems.
3. Responsible Disposal
Avoid pouring grease, fat, or foreign objects down your drains, as these are common culprits for clogs.

1. Boiling Water Blitz
Sometimes, a simple solution can work wonders. Start by boiling a kettle of water and carefully pour it down the drain. 5 Easy Steps to Clear a Clogged Drain: Say Goodbye to Plumbing Problems
Clogged drains are a typical household issue that can cause a great deal of frustration and inconvenience. A clogged drain, whether it's a slow-draining sink or a completely blocked shower drain, can disrupt your daily routine and even contribute to more severe plumbing issues. But don't worry; in this piece, we'll show you how to clear a clogged drain in Manhattan NY, and say goodbye to plumbing problems for good.
1) Identify the Cause of the Clog
The first step in unclogging a clogged toilet is determining the source of the obstruction. Hair, soap scum, food waste, and foreign items are common reasons for clogged drains. Depending on the cause of the clog, you may need to use various techniques and tools to clear it.
Step 2: Use a Plunger
A plunger is an effective instrument for unclogging clogged drains. Place the plunger over the drain to form a seal. Then, aggressively push and pull the plunger to create suction and pressure that will dislodge the blockage. Repeat this procedure as needed until the drain begins to clear.
Step 3: Try a Drain Snake
If a plunger does not work, a drain snake can be used to remove the clog. A drain snake is a long, flexible wire with a hook at one end that can be inserted into the drain to clear the obstruction. Insert the drain snake into the pipe and rotate it until resistance is felt. Then, draw the snake out and clean up any debris on the hook.
Step 4: Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
Natural cleaning products such as baking soda and vinegar can be used to unclog drains. Pour a cup of baking soda down the sink first, followed by a cup of vinegar. Cover the pipe with a plug or cloth to keep the fizzing reaction at bay. Pour boiling water down the drain after a few minutes to flush out any residual debris.
Step 5: Call a Professional
If none of the above solutions work, it's time to contact a plumber. A licensed plumber will have the necessary tools and knowledge to diagnose and repair more complicated plumbing problems. They can also perform regular maintenance to avoid future clogs and keep your plumbing system running smoothly.
