RE: Missouri Trans Ban

As one of our immediate neighbors, we are appalled by the Missouri Attorney General's decision to ban ALL transitioning, including hormone replacement therapy, for transgender Missourians - including adults.

Even though HRT has been documented for decades to be life-saving and the best treatment for gender dysphoria, transgender adults in Missouri will be cut off from transition services beginning April 27th. All current transgender Missouri residents will have to undergo intense screening to continue their care - and will only be allowed to keep their medication routine if they show ZERO signs of mental illness, including depression, anxiety, autism, and "social media addiction." Missouri AG Andrew Bailey is now also enforcing a three-year waiting period, 18-month psychological assessment, and 15 YEAR medical supervision for anyone able to get past the screening process.

The Loving Master series - #BG3 FanFic Review

Good timezone my friends, I am happy to present another constellation in the bright sky of fanfiction: The Loving Master series by calqmity on AO3. (You can find the author on Tumblr at @calqmity and on Twitter.)

A note from the BG3 Fic Reviews team: As always, mind the tags, and for this wonderfully dark work in particular, as it includes numerous controversial and dark themes. These include NSFW; dead dove; necrophilia; non-con elements; and abusive relationships; among others. Our review is continued below the fold due to the heavy nature of the content in this particular series.

The series is comprised of three separate works exploring the dark desires of our favourite bloodsucker Ascended Astarion. It starts with The Doll Collector, a fantastic title in and of itself with no small amount of sinister foreshadowing. 

In this story there is a constant and ominous theme of dehumanisation as well as an exploration of Astarion’s relationship with death. The author details Ascended Astarion’s recently devised methods of collecting his new vampire spawn cohort, as well as the addiction he develops in controlling their lifeless bodies. (Reminder: mind the tags!)

Astarion is obsessively controlling, and takes great delight in stripping any sort of independence or autonomy from his spawn that they may have once enjoyed in their former lives. It is a dark work, and there is no healing to be found here. This is an excellently constructed examination of Ascended Astarion’s dark mind and how he fulfills his most toxic needs as his spawn become his latest possessions to play with at his leisure.

The Unbearable Pressure, the author's second work in the series, is no different to its predecessor in its exploration of Ascended Astarion's growing darkness and cruelty. This work focuses more on on his relationship with his most disobedient spawn, Blaze, and his efforts to break her and ensure her obedience. 

The theme of dehumanisation and dollification gets more pronounced the further we read. Astarion wants to control every single part of his spawn. And even despite the obvious sadism of his actions, Astarion genuinely believes he is doing his spawn a kindess, and grapples to understand why his spawn are not more grateful for his 'assistance' and what he considers his dedicated 'care'. The author has expressed Astarion's delusion of benevolence well, as our narrator is wonderfully unreliable.

Haunted By Your Touch, Aching For Your Love is our third and final work in the series, and quite possibly my favourite of the three! (I would call it a crowd pleaser, but that requires that the crowd in question likes breaking characters down and making them suffer oh so deliciously.)

The cycle of abuse and the affection for one’s captor can be difficult to write in fiction. There is a common mistake of stepping back from the scene and becoming more clinical in order to convey why the cycle is happening and why it continues, and, in so doing, create a disconnect between the reader and the characters. This work sees that tripping point coming from miles away and does cartwheels over it. 

We are deep in Astarion’s mind and psyche in this work as his delusions and twisted perspective have completely erased any distinction between reality and his wicked desires. It is left to the keen eye of the reader to pick up on the subtle hints and evidence of his delusions, which are expertly described by the author via the reactions of the other characters that suffer Astarion's whims and mistreatment.

The Loving Master, as a whole, is a wonderful exploration into dark themes and abusive relationships. Astarion’s character is portrayed consistently through the entire series using beautiful metaphors that I could hear Astarion himself repeating in his own voice. And beyond our lead antagonist, the author's original characters are well-written and developed, becoming well-established personalities in their own right. Each one has their own clear motivations and responds to Astarion differently, adding to the depth of the overall narrative with every line. These stories are also structurally sound, as you can look forward to a healthy mix of short and long paragraphs and sentence structures that makes the story easy to read and easy to enjoy.

Mind the tags on AO3, as The Loving Master does not shy away from NSFW elements and very heavy themes. 

Enjoy your dove, but be aware. It is very, very dead.

And now his beautifully pliant Lydia laid underneath him, fully submitted to his one desire: for her to become his. Her jet black hair framed her round, delicate face. Through her long, black eyelashes, her dark purple eyes stared up at him, wide and vulnerable. The indigo moonlight skin that bruised wonderfully under the force of his fingers was soft and warm to the touch.

"Be gentle," her quiet voice trembled.

There was nothing gentle about forging an undead monster out of an innocent, precious soul—his perfectly obedient, beautiful little monster, yet a monster nonetheless—but he could pretend, for just a moment.

He brought her wrist up to his mouth, laying a feather light kiss on top of the flesh, eating the garnish before digging into the main course. He cradled it in his hands before sinking his teeth in. Her quick yelp from the sudden pain sent a raging, hot inferno through his abdomen, encouraged by the red delicacy on his tastebuds.

Eventually he forced himself to pull away, letting the bloodied, shaking hand fall from his grasp. He leaned forward, placing his hands on either side of her head, trapping his prey.

"You have given me everything...thank you." His words came out breathy and in between sighs of pleasure. The taste of her blood lingered on his lips, but it wasn't enough. He needed every last drop. While the ritual had rid him of the hunger caused by his supernatural curse, it had been replaced with a new hunger: to take, to take, and to take, from everyone around him. He wanted it all.

She look terrified out of her mind about what was about to happen, her eyes glancing at the liquid ruby dripping down his chin. In this moment, she looked like a porcelain doll. Her plump lips and flushed cheeks had a warm glow cast on them from the candle light in the tavern room. But when his fangs pierced her neck, she did not crack—only screamed. It was like biting into the plumpest, ripest fruit in the orchard, and her cries of pain were the beautiful notes of the birds' song high above in the sky.

can you make the obvious connections here with the rollback of reproductive rights... including letting women bleed out for fear of legal liability for performing an "abortion"? wonder what all the for-profit insurance (health/life etc) have to say about this... i did just find out i have a $3k er visit bill that my insurance paid and will pay nothing for because i hadn't met my deductible yet. helpfully, they said to find a lower one next time. this was the lowest one that was available on the healthcare marketplace. $5900. almost $350 every month. co-pays. does nothing at all because for the 12 hours i was in the er sitting in the hallway because they didn't bother to get me a bed, they billed me $13k for the privilege of... doing some tests i didn't ask for and couldn't really consent to due to being delirious, being berated for my blood clotting "fast" because the nurse didn't bother to take it to the labs who didn't bother to test it in time so she took 9 vials from me and then left because her shift was over mid-sticking and just left them there on the bed, in the hall, where no one noticed for 45 minutes. (she didn't tell me she was leaving btw so no ofc i didn't ask bc why would i think to?) at least they gave me three bags of iv fluid, though of course my mother was irritated at being there (she was the one who took me - to her hospital, without checking whether it was in network (it was) - because she had ignored me for several days until i crawled on the floor to her bedroom, delirious and vomiting, and begged for help. she had previously refused to take me to a minute clinic because "they're not going to do anything". this was my first er visit ever btw and i've never stayed in a hospital before except for when i was born, but i've been in and out of them (visiting) all my life bc my mother worked there for 38 years. apparently this particular hospital, despite being a non-profit, and despite other hospitals in the same network not doing this, is super aggressive with litigation for past due balances and owns its own collection agency. they even garnished the wages of their own workers, one of whom made $16k a year but was now facing $23k of medical debt to the hospital she worked at. garnished her wages at around 25% because she went to the place she worked at for help. even when i told my mom about this she said she knew about it already. but the board members claim they have no idea. we're a major medical hub, btw.

including the metro area where most of the white people live, they have 1/3 of the poverty rates of black people in the same area. ok, narrowing it down...

it gets worse. for the county, the rate of poverty for black people is 4x higher than that of whites. and in the city of memphis itself? a solid 3, give or take a 0.04 or so. is it worth mentioning how deeply segregated this city is? we elected our first black mayor of the majority black city...in 1992. he was also corrupt as fuck but interesting how that's not what people mention when they complain about him. he was technically the second black mayor too, because another man served as interim in 1982. our current mayor is black as were the two mayors after herenton, but not from 2016-2024. we're a majority female city too. all of the mayors have been male, only five black since 1982. btw we're the only american city in the top 10 of the most violent cities in the world and consistently number 1 in america. we also apparently have the worst drivers and a lot of other horrible shit but hey, at least we have good water thanks to the natural aquifer. until elon musk decides to use it all to cool his new supercomputer processing shit he's building here, apparently, or until he decides to dump something in it. either one is a very high probability. we're also long overdue for a horrible earthquake.

Angela Sanchez, 27 (USA 1993)

Angela Nieto Sanchez was the mother of 12-year-old Maria and 3-year-old Martin. She brought her children with her on the day she went to an abortion facility.

Angela’s family later told the news that Angela hadn’t wanted an abortion. She’d been excited about the baby and hoped for another girl so Maria could have a sister. She’d been offered a “consultation” at the abortion facility, which advertised itself as if it was a clinic. Angela was not even aware that Clinica Femenina de la Comunidad was an abortion facility when she got there.

Somehow during what was supposed to be a free consultation, Angela was convinced to undergo an abortion. Abortionist Alicia Ruiz Hanna frequently did this, offering low-income or undocumented people “free consultations” and talking them into paying her for an abortion. Deputy District Attorney Rick King later described Hanna as ″a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” The prosecutor for the case said, ″She’s very attractive, has a very soothing sounding voice… The clientele she reached out to - who were mostly illegal aliens looking for guidance - she would counsel them, which many times resulted in them having abortions done by her.″ As an undocumented immigrant, Angela was especially vulnerable to this coercion. She was and her third child were just two new targets in a long line of Hanna’s victims.

Angela had no idea that she would never see her children again. During the abortion, she began vomiting and foaming at the mouth, but the abortionist refused to call an ambulance.

Her kids were waiting in the lobby for hours wondering if their mother was okay. The abortionist’s assistant took them out of the building to a fast food restaurant and lied to them, saying their mother left the abortion facility without them. The distraught children couldn’t believe their mother would do that.

She didn’t. Angela had been killed.

12-year-old Maria returned to the abortion facility later with two friends and an aunt. They had checked local hospitals only to find that Maria’s mother wasn’t there. When they arrived, the assistant told them that they didn’t know where Angela was. Then a horrifying sight greeted the search party.

Young Maria saw the abortionist dragging her mother’s dead body and attempting to stuff her into a car trunk. The traumatized 12-year-old cried and attempted to hug her mother’s corpse, but Hanna physically restrained her.

When the police investigated, they discovered that Clinica Femenina de la Comunidad was guilty of even more crimes than previously thought. Hanna had gradually fired staff licensed as doctors and let unqualified employees operate and administer anesthesia to cut costs. She’d presented herself as a doctor, but she wasn’t one. California’s ridiculously permissive abortion laws let her get away with this for far too long since there was virtually no regulation or inspection of abortion facilities. Thanks to the evidence (including Maria’s testimony in court), the abortionist was finally arrested and sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. Nobody should have to go through what Angela Sanchez and her children went through.
