In the Line
Characters: Cleo Rosehyn and Amir Pinawal ( @snikker-doooo ‘s OC)
Type: Fluff, Drabble
Warnings: None
“What horrible level of hell spawned this torture? Are we being punished? Is this the real eternal damnation we’ve brought upon ourselves for our sins?”
“It’s a car pick-up line at an elementary school, Amir. You’ve faced harder challenges than this,” Cleo said and turned to look at the frustrated man beside her.
Amir only rolled his eyes and let his head fall back against the headrest. They’d been stuck in the line for almost 20 minutes and had once again come to a standstill. Every Friday they both endured it to pick up their kids and spend the afternoon together. Despite not being a couple they agreed that it was important for the pups to spend time with them both occasionally. That led to their Friday afternoon hang-out. All five of them did something fun, ate dinner, and put the kids to bed together.
Cleo stifled a giggle as she imagined what Amir must look like on his days to pick them up. His sensitive ears picked it up though and he looked at his companion. She was the very picture of serenity in her sunflower sundress with her curls cascading down her shoulder and back. Sometimes he wished he had her patience.
On her side, Cleo admired him. She knew he wasn’t really that frustrated. His words were sharp but his body relaxed in the driver's seat. Even with his dreads pulled back and jeans on though he looked like a man of action. Ready for anything at a moment's notice without hesitation. She loved that about him.
“Finally,” he muttered as the cars began to move again. “That last batch must have been a truckload.”
“Some parents say that about us as well.”
“Ours know how to move though. They’re efficient.”
“And excitable.”
“That too.”
They shared a smile and pulled forward. A teacher with a walkie leaned down to Cleo’s window.
“Who’re here for?”
“Tamora, Sylvia, and Neil Rosehyn-Pinawal”
“Alright,” he stood back up to speak into the walkie. “The Rosewals parents are here.”
As soon as the words were out of his mouth three children burst through the doors.
“Mama!”
“Dad!”
“It’s Friday!”
“I’m hungry!”
“Me too!”
“What’s for dinner?”
“Got any snacks?”
They trampled over each other to get into the backseat, not pausing to breathe or get any answers. Amir gave them a look in the rear-view mirror and they quickly settled down into their seats with their big smiles.
“Hello, my little loves, how was school today?” Cleo asked and pulled out the little cooler she brought. The pups were usually hungry so she always came prepared. After they each had their snack they started recounting their days in the usual pattern; Tamora spoke while the others ate, then Neil took over so Tam could snack, and finally Sylvia.
“Did you catch any bad guys today, old man?” Neil piped up once he was finished.
“Of course, little pup. I am the best Detective you know.”
“Officer Scott said the same thing last time we visited your work, Dad!” Tam said.
“Scott doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m the best and he’s just jealous.”
“Mama, is that true?”
“Oh absolutely, sweetheart, your Dad is the best.”
Amir’s proud smile shined a bit brighter. He took a lot of pride in his work. Someday he may even tell the kids it was how he met Cleo. But that was a hard story they’d need to agree to tell together many years in the future.
“Well… if Mama says…”
He scowled in the mirror.
“If Mama says? What about dear old Dads word?”
The triplets only giggled.
Amir looked back over at Cleo, she smiled and shook her head. They had gotten so good at communicating without needing words.
Co-parenting wasn’t always easy and they’d had their fair share of problems. But in moments like these they both loved every second. They shared a mutual respect and admiration that their kids thrived with. Plus the love of the three little pups in the backseat. There wasn’t anywhere they’d rather be

5, 7, and 9 for your OCs ❤️
5. What would their job be in a modern AU?
Andi: Likely some kind of media/PR position
Cleo: She’d still follow the same career path. Only difference is she be trained as a high-end escort and then gone on to psychology
Goldie: Probably still a traveling farmhand
Tikos: Absolutely still a sailor. You could never keep him from the sea. He’d likely own a fleet of cargo ships
Svetlana: The Russian Ballet
Damh: Pediatrician
7. Do they have a middle + last name?
Andi: Used to but abandoned them when she ran away. Because she never told Asra the knowledge was lost after her death/resurrection
Cleo: Her original name was lost when her family and village were destroyed. The madam of the brothel adopted her as her own and named her Cleo Rosehyn
Goldie: Godiva Köhler
Tikos: Zotikos Orion Katsaros-Yakinthos (or something to that effect, his parents differ on exact details)
Svetlana: Svetlana Ivanovna Lebedev
Damh: Damh Beathan Matheson
9. What animal is their masquerade mask?
Andi: Wolf
Cleo: Butterfly
Goldie: Cow
Tikos: Electric Eel
Svetlana: Swan
Damh: Dhole

Do I have a list of WIPs that need attention? Yes. Did I write self indulgent CleoXMuriel smutty angst ficlet instead? Yes 😓
Pairing: Pre-plague Cleo Rosehyn x Muriel of the Kokhuri
Ft. Count Lucio (as a villain), Nadia Satrinava, Julian Devorak
⚠️ Warnings: 18+, angst, smut, some possessive behavior, public (?) sex, forbidden love, mentions of height (it’s not a big part, he’s just very distinctively massive), set up is set after Count Lucio took Vesuvia ⚠️
Hidden
Inside the extravagant walls of the Vesuvian palace there was always excitement to behold. Ever since the arrival of a hardened mercenary who managed to change the course of fate. When the citizens first spotted the proud face of one Montag Morgasson, few imagined he’d actually enact his plans. Still, he inflamed the people with his beautiful face and persuasive speeches. Before anyone in the upper classes could even consider him a threat, he was already breaking down their gates. Count Lucio sat on the throne exactly as promised.
Unfortunately for the citizens, he wasn’t the leader they expected. With him came decadence for the new upper class which left the common people almost exactly where they had been before.
Rumors swirled of the Count’s misdeeds but it was far too late. Who was there to care about orphans being dragged into the coliseum? Or unusual dealings with the company he brought along? No one who wanted to hold onto their normal lives.
Inside the palace though, people pushed the boundaries of normal to avoid it at all cost. Lavish feasts, deadly fights, and hedonistic parties were either happening or planned to happen soon. Servants flew about in busy panics as they kept up with the demands. But the rich and powerful paid them no mind.
So the sight of the Count in the middle of a garishly decorated courtyard surrounded by sycophants and concubines could almost be called normal. He sat on a throne of gold with luxury at the tips of his fingers at all time. Often someone sat across his lap in full display of everyone and that someone was never his wife. Countess Nadia Satrinava had resolutely refused any such behavior immediately in their marriage. Not that it dissuaded the Count at all. The Countess was still in attendance, as her role demanded, but she slipped through the crowds making quiet connections or spoke with the palace Doctor’s assistant, Julian Devorak, when she needed a break. Only for a moment though because if the Count spotted them he would insist on Julian replacing whoever was on his lap.
The night was late though and the Count had been in his cups for some time. So the guests felt freer to move about their own way without drawing his attention. Nadia and Julian sat in deep contemplation while blocking out the rest of the world for a while. The courtiers roamed the floor to find conflicts, well except for one who was more preoccupied with the food. Lucio whispered into his companions ear to the delight of giggles and blushes. It was only then that two prominent fixtures could slip away unnoticed. Which they eagerly did.
Away from the noise and parade in a deserted hallway, a large shadow of a man pressed a much smaller figure against the stone of the wall. If anyone were to walk by then they wouldn’t be able to identify the smaller person but there was no missing the Scourge. Larger than anyone else in the palace, he stood at 6’10” with solid muscle on his body accompanied by too many scars to count. A heavy collar rested on his neck, golden and decorated for the event. Stories ran wild about the savagery of the Count’s personal executioner. Not a word of it the truth.
As he lifted his partner up to wrap their legs around his waist he touched them reverently. Large hands handling someone he treated as a treasure. Pale freckled legs shone in the moonlight and contrasted with his dark skin. With the harsh clattering sound of hair ornaments being thrown to the ground, bright red curls spilled down their back.
They only wanted each other and not even her belonging to the Count himself could stop them. Cleo Rosehyn, a concubine to the most powerful person in Vesuvia, wrapped herself around her partner and pressed frantic kisses to his lips. They never knew how much time they would have.
“Muriel,” she breathed softly against his lips. He groaned into her and pulled back to rest his forehead on hers. Both panting from the lack of air but desperate to stay close.
“... this is a bad idea,” his low voice rumbled. They both knew how it hurt to remember that.
“You say that every time,” she teased him. “But I’d rather this idea than any that involve you being away from me.”
He couldn’t argue with that when it was exactly what he wanted too.
“He doesn’t suspect...?”
“Not at all, he rarely seeks me out anymore. Which I’m grateful for.”
Muriel only grunted in response. A small fire in his sternum built whenever he thought about the Count’s hands on Cleo. His own hands held her closer and pressed her further into the stone, as if he could just hide her away and erase Lucio’s touch with his own. A soft hand laid on his cheek and pulled him up to meet her eyes. The soft green held a conviction he admired and envied. Muriel leaned in to place a kiss on her button nose in reassurance that he wasn’t giving up. The stolen moments, glances, touches, they all played a part in this dangerous idea of theirs. For a year they ignored all of it and pretended as though nothing more than friendship and camaraderie. But what burned between them became too much to hide.
All they had were these liaisons when no one would miss them but they’d become necessary for them both to stay sane inside the palace. Knowing that if they were found out then it’d mean harsh punishment, potentially death, or worse separation.
Eager to escape the thought of consequences, Muriel pulled Cleo back to him for a deep kiss. For now they could just think of one another. Cleo’s fingers tangled into his thick black hair and she kissed back with as much enthusiasm.
“Please... Muriel... please?” She murmured against his lips. He knew what she wanted.
Using the wall and his body to keep her up his hands moved down to undo the laces of his pants. At least Lucio didn’t demand he wear anything ridiculous at parties beyond the collar. Cleo was usually kept in complicated and intricate clothing but not around her lower half. Lucio believed the blatant show of his many concubines represented power so he made sure everyone knew who they were. While he worked at his laces Cleo took the opportunity to shower his neck and shoulders with kisses and small nips. Most bruising could be explained away on a gladiator but love bites on his neck were just a bit too obvious.
“Cleo,” he groaned at the feeling of her lips. “You’re distracting me.”
His tone didn’t change from the low growl but she knew he was teasing her now.
“Mm, what are you going to do about it?”
A smirk flashed across his face and he pulled her clothing away just enough to slip inside her. The intrusion caused her to gasp and then she laughed with a bright smile. Muriel swore he’d do anything for that smile, once again. It was a true smile that was reserved for him when they were alone.
“I’ll have to distract you.”
She nuzzled close to him for a slow languid kiss. Once she was adjusted comfortably she rolled her hips into him and drew a groan. Now he could feel the grin in her kisses. Without waiting any longer he began thrusting into her. With that, not even the Count himself walking by could drag their attention from each other. Muriel watched her eyes flutter and savored every quiet moan. Cleo tried to keep her eyes on his, she knew he loved that and placed a hand on his chest to feel the satisfied rumbling. They moved together slowly as if they had all the time in the world. In this private world, they did.
Muriel dropped his head onto her shoulder when he started to feel the telltale clenching of her. She was close and he picked up his speed. He needed to feel her, to hear her, to know she was satisfied... to know she was his.
“Muriel... mon amour... mo ghràdh,” she called directly into his ear. He drove into her harder, the urge to release himself growing.
“Say it.” His breath was coming in pants and he spoke through gritted teeth.
Cleo leaned even closer.
“Yours, my love. All yours. I love you. I love you. Tha gaol agam ort!”
She cried out as she clamped around him. Without too much thought he only went harder to prolong her orgasm before following himself. A hard growl against her skin as he held her as tight as he dared. Both of them basking in each other for the blissful moment.
“Би чамд хайртай.”
He whispered, one of the few phrases he remembered from his childhood.
After they finally separated and righted their clothing, Cleo took Muriel’s hand in hers to place a small kiss on the inside of his wrist. It was their unspoken promise. That maybe someday they could leave it all behind. No longer a forbidden love between a concubine and executioner but just love between two people.

Tha gaol agam ort! - I love you

Arcana: Echoes of the Past
Day Two: Parents
@arcana-echoes
Niamh and Wynne: Andi’s parents were farmers and had a large family to manage so in truth, she didn’t spend too much time with either. Andi loved her Mother but didn’t respect her for the choices she made. Since Andi spent most of her time out away from the village she was known as a bit of a problem child. After her resurrection, all memories of her family before disappeared and she’d never even told anyone their last names. Asra and her decide to keep it that way.
Anu and [Unknown] + Madame Rosehyn: Cleo’s parents unfortunately died when she was very young. The two of them came from different villages that had merged to protect against invaders that were intent on wiping out their culture. Anu was a warrior and her husband was a dedicated worshipper of the old Gods (Druid-like and passifist). Anu swore to protect her husband and she did until their last breath. After Cleo arrived at the Rosehyn Brothel she was raised by the Madam who practically adopted her. It was the Madam who named her, raised her, and taught her magic. Cleo loved her very dearly. She never had any memories of her birth parents and lost the memories of the Madam after her resurrection as part of the understanding with Justice.
Captains Thalia & Adrijan Katsaros-Yakinthos (Possibly? No one is ever sure): Tikos’ parents were the star crossed lovers of the sea. Well, they also fought endlessly over title of “Most Feared Pirate” but eventually they fell in love in the midst of their fueding and fighting. Tikos was their ultimate treasure though and the trio still remain close. Not that you would know if you met Lia and Adri who bicker over anything and everything. Including the circumstances of Tikos’ birth, the correct way to say his name, what to have for dinner, etc.
Hollë: Goldie’s Mother is a moderately powerful Fae from a different realm. She takes care of an area in the human realm and rewards hard work. For most of her life Goldie only had her Mother and their farm which suited them well. They’re very close and Goldie misses her now that she’s in the human realm.

Milk, sheep, and tree for all of them ❤️
Thanks @xvi-the-tower ❤️
🥛 Milk: What is a food you find comforting when you are sad?
Andi: Chocolate chip cookies
Cleo: Venison stew
Goldie: Fresh made bread
Tikos: Baklava (his Mother’s recipe)
🐑 Sheep: What is a comfort item you own?
Andi: A fluffy alpaca wool blanket that Asra got her
Cleo: A necklace given to her by Madame Rosehyn as a child. Years later she hid a lock of Magni’s hair behind the stone before he was taken away
Goldie: A lace mask that covers her eyes only and limits her magic
Tikos: His eyepatch, Ilya gave it to him after Tikos lost his eye because he didn’t like the glass eye
🌳 Tree: What is one thing in your future you are looking foward towards?
Andi: “Finally having a home and a family where it’s safe to be ourselves.”
Cleo: “The chance to love.”
Goldie: “Learning! I’m excited to be in the real world.”
Tikos: “Being important in someone’s life. Maybe even starting a family someday.”

I love this so much! 🥺 Aster will be a great stepdad to Magni (and a great dad to Magni's younger siblings 😘)
Fluff time!
Pairing: Cleo Rosehyn x Aster Silva (@xvi-the-tower)
Ft. Magni Cleosson, Tikos, Amaranth Silva (@/xvi-the-tower)
Better Than Good
“IT’S MEEEEEEEE!”
A loud child’s voice rang out across the peaceful meadow, effectively shattering any sense of calm. A small blonde boy bounded towards a colorful picnic set up where his Mother was setting up a variety of food. Her curly red hair fell freely down her back and she smiled happily in his direction.
“I see that, Mo Stóirín,” she laughed and opened her arms for him to run into. “Did you enjoy your time with Aster?”
She looked from the boy to the man trailing behind who’s bright smile seemed so natural on his face.
“Really keeps you on your toes, that boy of yours!”
Aster plopped down on the blanket and fell onto his back with a happy sigh. She leaned down to give him a sweet kiss on his cheek.
“Ah Cleo, you spoil me,” Aster joked and rolled over to put his head on her lap where she started absently running her fingers through his lovely dark hair.
“Me too!!!”
Magni bounced in place with excitement until Cleo leaned over and covered his face with affectionate kisses. He giggled and squirmed. Aster playfully threw a hand to his chest and looked offended.
“I’m feeling so left out! Poor me...”
It worked immediately as Magni turned from his Mother and went to give Aster a cheek kiss as well. Aster’s hands flew out and grabbed him suddenly to pull him close and began tickling him.
“Aha! You fell for my plot!”
Magni roared with giggles and squirmed all over at Aster’s attack.
“Mama! Help!” He managed to get out between laughs.
Cleo pursed her lips and tapped a finger to her chin as if contemplating.
“Well, I suppose I must,” she sighed.
Gently grabbing her son she pulled Magni away easily and spotted the mischievous look in Aster’s eyes. As soon as she let Magni go, Aster was on her with wild butterfly kisses all over her face. Now it was Cleo’s turn to dissolve into giggles, her light musical laughter.
“Well,” a new woman’s voice broke through. “Should we come back later?”
The couple paused and glanced up to see the newcomers. Amaranth stood with her hands on her hips and a playful smile next to Tikos who smirked just like he’d caught kids with their hands in a cookie jar.
“I don’t think we’re needed anymore, Firebug. All the fun is happening without us,” he laughed.
“Maman, you wouldn’t miss out if you were on time,” Aster teased.
Letting Cleo go a bit, Aster sat up and slid an arm around her waist.
“Tiiiiii! Ammmmmma!”
Magni ran at them and Tikos swooped down to lift the boy up into his arms with a grin.
“Who’s hungry?,” Tikos asked. “And who’s thirsty.” He shot a cheeky look at Cleo and Aster.
“Come eat before you say something rude,” Cleo insisted.
The four adults spread out on the blanket while Magni switched from lap to lap. Together they dug into the good food, wine, and merciless teasing that came naturally to the group.
Later that night, Cleo and Aster walked along the riverfront back to her clinic. Aster held tight to the sleeping Magni while Cleo carried the picnic supplies. The silence as they walked was easy and comfortable. She managed to wiggle a hand free and slipped it through his arm. Aster gave her one of his half smiles. Cleo looked over at the two of them with a feeling of safety and comfort.
“You know,” she started tentatively. “You’re so good with him.”
“I hope so, I do have seven nieces.”
“You know what I mean...”
She didn’t want to push, knowing it could be a sensitive subject for him. His smile wavered to something more serious.
“It’s... it’s nothing.”
“It’s amazing,” she cut him off.
“It’s no secret that I, well I really have no idea what I’m doing raising a child. It’s not something I ever imagined for myself... with the lifestyle I was raised for. Then suddenly I have this second chance to be... a Mother.”
She looked away for a moment.
“It has been a journey and I just want to say, thank you.”
That caught his attention and he raised a questioning brow at her. She gave his arm a reassuring squeeze.
“You’re so good with Magni but more than that, you make me think maybe other things are possible for me as well. Maybe even a... family? A lover?”
Before she could continue Aster’s lips were on hers passionately. Her eyes widened a moment then she leaned into it. Enjoying the kiss on the canal by a man who opened up a world of possibilities. He pulled away only an inch and kept his eyes closed to whisper.
“What if... what if I’m not the family type? What if I’m no good?” His voice filled with insecurity that had been buried deep down. Cleo kissed him with a wide smile.
“You’re already better than good, I know it.”

Arcana: Echoes of the Past
Day 1: Hometown
Aka Man am I cutting this close! @arcana-echoes
Celtica - Andi and Cleo
While Andi and Cleo came from different villages they both were born in the country of Celtica.
Andi was born in a very small isolated farming village to a large family. She was betrothed pretty much at birth as the village took great care to prevent bloodlines crossing too closely. Yes, it was that small. Andi only lived there until about 10 years-old though when it was decided she should marry in hopes it would settle her down. When she protested, her Father humiliated her in front of the village with a whipping and then made her stand outside all night in the snow. It wasn’t meant to hurt that much or be dangerous, there was someone nearby in the houses all night taking turns watching her. It was enough though. Andi took off into the forest and never looked back. After that she lived mostly in the forests of Celtica, traveling around occasionally with roaming mages but usually alone. Liberating animals from captivity and enjoying freedom.
Cleo’s village was also very small but it was actually the combination of two villages trying to defend against invaders. The larger village invited the smaller into their lands as the latter was made up of peaceful spiritualist (influenced by the Druids). Cleo was only a very small child when the invaders burned the village down. The children were taken to be sold off while everyone else was killed. Cleo was sold to the most prestigious brothel in Celtica’s capital where the madam adopted her as her protégée. There, Cleo lived her childhood without being able to see much beyond the property of the Rosehyn Brothel.
(Note: Children did not work there! They were trained but did not work until they were old enough i.e. around 20)
The Ocean - Tikos
No really. Tikos was born when his parents were out to sea and raised mostly off land. Pirate parents believed the ship and the open sea were the perfect places to be. They were right from their perspective too. The village where they originated shunned all magic as evil and could be quite violent to magicians. As evidenced by what they did to Tikos when he was only around 17. So, when Tikos thinks of home he thinks of the ocean.
Another Realm - Goldie
What’s this! Unheard of information for Goldie! Yes! Yes it is! Turns out Goldie isn’t human! Goldie actually comes from a different realm entirely where she lived with her Mother (Based heavily on Frau Holle). It’s a realm where hard work is the most important value and life beyond their farm seemed untouchable. Much like other Fae realms, her Mother designed it to her needs specifically. Goldie grew up very happy with her animals, her chores, and her Mother. Who wouldn’t want to live in a fairy tale?

Happy birthday, Asra and Faust!!! Asra’s route was the first I played and really what got me hooked on The Arcana. But no one wants to hear about that! 😂 more importantly, Asra birthday short fic! (Also yes, I will use this art forever because it’s so beautiful)
Pairing: Asra Alnazar x OC! Andi, mentions of Muriel x OC! Cleo Rosehyn
Post-death, post-canon
Happy Birthday Asra and Faust!
“Are you sure you wouldn’t have liked something a bit... I don’t know... bigger?” Andi said.
Asra shook his head and smiled.
“This is perfect,” he pulled their entwined hands up to press a kiss to Andi’s.
The afternoon was slowly slipping into evening as the two magicians sat overlooking the marketplace below them. They’d had a wonderful dinner and even received a few special treats from Salasi. The only thing remaining from their favorite baker being pumpkin bread crumbs.
Faust lounged on Asra’s shoulders with a full belly and sleepy eyes. The night carried soft music from nearby street musicians and muffled chatter from the few people below.
Asra felt like he had never been this content.
When he looked over the table he saw Andi staring at him softly as she rested her head on her other hand, the wedding ring gleaming in the candlelight.
“We should probably head home soon. I know Portia said she’d look after Ayda as long as we wanted but...” Andi’s eyes trailed towards the shop. Asra smiled and agreed that he missed their baby too so they set off.
Andi hung back a step as Asra released the charms then stepped into the darkened shop then suddenly...
“SURPRISE!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY FAUST AND ASRA!!!”
Asra stared around the shop in shock as the lights flew on and all his friends surrounded him. Music filled the air and he spotted Julian and Nadia off with their instruments. Muriel stood near the back with a small smile which contrasted greatly to Cleo who jumped up with joy. Portia began pouring champagne into flutes and passing them out.
Salim and Aisha came forward with a beautiful cake with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY FAUST” written in large letters and a smaller “And Asra” under it. Asra burst into laughter at it. Faust quickly slithered away from Asra and onto Aisha’s wrist where she could see the candle.
“Wish!”
“Faust, what more could we wish for?” Asra said softly as he looked around. Everywhere he looked he saw smiling faces and friends. He turned around to see Andi had slipped upstairs to get Ayda. The little fluffy white haired child sleepily rubbed her bright blue eyes then spotted him and reached out.
“Zaza!” Andi passed the squirming child to Asra who kissed the top of her head then grabbed Andi by her waist to place a sweet kiss on her lips.
“You did this, didn’t you?”
Andi wiggled her nose and grinned.
“I’ll never tell.”
“WISH!”
“Okay Faust,” Asra leaned down to the cake and thought hard before blowing out the candle. The crowd cheered.
The well wishes poured in as the party started and soon everyone was laughing, dancing, and enjoying each other’s company. Shockingly, even Muriel was involved but likely because Cleo insisted.
A few people surround Aisha and Salim as they animatedly shared stories of Asra as a child.
“So that’s why when Ayda was born you locked away all the teapots!”
Asra grinned. His cheeks were starting to ache from all the smiling but that wouldn’t stop him. Andi turned from listening to his parents to snuggle closer on the loveseat they’d claimed.
“So what did you wish for?” She asked as she laid her head on his shoulder. So many strong emotions had to be tiring on her. Asra leaned close to her ear.
“Don’t worry, I’ll show you when everyone leaves.”
A slight red blush tinged her cheeks. True to his word though, he did.
A couple months passed after Asra’s party when Andi and Ayda returned from seeing Julian for a check up. Mostly for Ayda but Andi had been a little worse lately as well and Asra worried she was pushing herself too hard. Ayda was quick to tell Asra how it went in complete gibberish while he nodded along with the occasional “I see” and “Yes of course”.
When Ayda finally went down for her nap, Asra turned to Andi who hadn’t said much yet.
“Did Julian say anything?”
Andi looked down and nodded.
“He said ‘Happy late birthday’”
“...”
A smile took over and Asra ran to pick Andi up in hug so he could spin her around. She giggled slightly and hugged him back tightly.

Chapter Five: A Key
To say that Kit Hunter had an interesting past would be a gross understatement. In his relatively short life, Kit had managed to experience more than most citizens of Vesuvia did in their entire lifetime. Not that he was prone to say, bragging or anything.
So when he found himself in the elevator of the capitol building on his way to help his secret agent brother uncover a plot that threatened the Prime Minister by using his extensive illegal skills, let’s just say he wasn’t too surprised. He shifted the motorcycle helmet to perch on his hip as he double checked that he’d brought all his gear. Once he was satisfied, he checked his hair in the reflective surface of the doors. As they opened he prepared to throw some witty line out at whoever he met first but just as his mouth opened... his voice failed at the sight in front of him.
The outer office was clean and stylish which was boring but over in one corner color seemed to explode. Plants, candy dishes, Knick-knacks, and photos spread all over the reception desk but it was the woman sitting behind it all that rendered him speechless.
A gorgeous fiery looking redhead smiled up at him with a mischievous sparkle in her eye. Kit felt like his heart wanted to jump out of his chest. A striped red headband kept her wild hair back but some still fell in front of her face but didn’t block the beautiful blue eyes looking directly at Kit.
Oh.
Looking... directly...
Panic shot through him and Kit tried to laugh as he leaned against the desk. He tried again for something witty or smooth, unfortunately it didn’t come easily.
“Hi, Uh, what in the Arcana is a girl like you doing in a place like this?”
If the world could have opened up and swallowed him, he wouldn’t complain.
The woman just laughed though and leaned closer to him.
“Well, someone has to provide the chaos around here.”
Kit felt like a cartoon character who’s eyes popped out as hearts.
“You must be here for Agent Trevellyn, he’s right through that door. Unless you need someone to show you the way?”
She teased as she pointed to the door only a few steps away. Kit smiled and gave an exaggerated sigh.
“It looks like such a long harrowing journey but no, I must be strong. I must go on!” The woman laughed again and he would have gladly sat there all day listening to her.
Emrys had other plans though.
Little had either of the two noticed, the door had opened and Emrys was staring his brother down. Kit felt his gaze and turned to see Emrys raise his brow just slightly.
“Hey, br- Agent. I’m here to solve the case!”
Emrys shook his head but had a small smile as he gestured for Kit to come look at the door.
Kit bounced over with a small wave back to the woman at the desk.
As soon as he sat down in front of the door, it was all business. He ran his fingers over every inch of the door looking for even the smallest sign of tampering but found none.
“Is that a Magician’s lock?” Kit mostly mused to himself but Emrys nodded anyway.
That changed the game. The lock showed no signs of damage or even tampering and a quick inquiry to Emrys ensured him that the PM had no trouble opening it when she came in.
“Well, I know exactly how they did it,” Kit stood up and paused so Emrys could humor him.
“And?”
“I’m glad you asked,” Kit noticed the Secretary had leaned over the desk to listen too. “They...... had a key!”
The silence that followed was anything but comfortable. Emrys narrowed his eyes at his brother, the Secretary raised her brows in confusion, and the PM herself walked over to give him an incredulous stare.
“.... they had a key?” Emrys said slowly.
“Yep, no one is getting into a Magician lock without serious noticeable damage or a hammer. This baby is top of the line security and they’re known for being tricky.”
Kit was confident, no one was cracking this lock so cleanly.
Emrys went quiet again and Kit could see the gears whirling in his head as he refocused his approach.
“Understood. Thank you for your assistance and that will be all.”
Kit frowned slightly, of course Emrys was kicking him out as soon as things got good. All he’d done was look at one door and state the obvious, boring.
“Maybe I can-“
“No.”
Kit suppressed the urge to roll his eyes.
“Fine, I’m going.”
Kit packed his little toolkit back up and slipped the packet back into the inner pocket of his leather jacket. Emrys and the PM were discussing putting together a list of new potential suspects.
“Ahem,” a small cough came from behind him. The Secretary had come out from behind her desk and held out a small paper bag to Kit.
“Thank you for your help, Mr...?”
Kit took the bag and opened it to see a freshly baked muffin that smelled like what hopes and dreams are made of.
“Oh no, please, my brother’s name is Mr. Mine is Kit, Kit Hunter.”
She smiled.
“Pleasure to meet you, Kit. I’m Portia Kocourek and I’m sure we’ll see each other around again.”
He certainly hoped so.

This turned out so cute! 🥺
Another cute ficlet!
Pairing: Cleo Rosehyn x Aster Silva ( @xvi-the-tower )
Warnings: Pregnancy
First Kick (s?!)
Cleo turned in front of her bedroom mirror to test a new angle. She pursed her lips as the view didn’t change. Staring back at her was a very distinct freckled rounded belly. The sheer robe split beneath her swollen breasts and fell on either side, just another sign of how large she’d grown.
“I can feel you fretting in there,” Aster called from outside the room. “You look beautiful.”
Despite how often she heard him say it, she smiled. Tanned hands slid around her midsection and Aster rested his head on her shoulder so they were together in the mirror.
“Mo Ghràdh, I feel as large as a house. I can’t remember being so big with Magni.”
“Well, you are technically a house for this little seedling.”
She turned to give him a mock scandalized face.
“Tha thu air mo ghortachadh, màthair do phàiste (You hurt me, the mother of your child)”
Aster laughed and nuzzled closer, sending a ticklish sensation through Cleo’s whole body. She couldn’t help but giggle and give him what he wanted.
Suddenly, Aster stopped laughing and went rigid.
“Love… did you feel that?”
Cleo looked down where Aster’s hand pressed firmly onto her stomach. They both waited. Nothing.
“My beauty, if you were a chicken, you’d be impeccable.”
Cleo fell into another giggling fit at the silliness and just as Aster predicted, he felt another solid kick under his palm.
“There! The baby likes to hear you laugh as much as I do.”
She smiled and leaned back into his embrace.
“It’s the first time you’ve felt them, I believe.”
Aster nodded, too absorbed in feeling the movements to speak. That was his baby he was feeling. Their baby. It was really happening. And… really active? He wrapped his other hand on another section of her stomach. Sure enough, he felt kicks there too. Maybe it could be the hand? Were those toes?
“Hey, uh, maybe we should let Julian know. Good time for a check up?”
Cleo agreed and continued to relax in his arms while Aster’s mind was suddenly racing. How many feet are in there?!

I promised Muriel and Cleo fluff! Magni’s here too now that his origins are revealed.
Pairing: Muriel x OC! Cleo Rosehyn
Warnings: Pregnancy
Post-Death, Post-Canon
Our Little Family
“Magni, if you don’t sit still I’m going to accidentally pull a fair chunk of your hair out,” Cleo flicked the boy’s ear lightly causing him to burst into laughter. She smiled and continued to weave his hair through her fingers. Magni’s golden hair caught every bit of light streaming through the trees as Cleo carefully braided the sides.
Muriel stood in the river already while he waited and watched the two of them. Seeing Cleo pull Magni’s hair into his own style made Muriel’s heart swell. It’d been his idea to teach Magni how to fish, mostly to get him out of the house for a bit as Cleo was heavily pregnant and tired. To his surprise though, Cleo offered to join them.
“We’re not going too far, my love. Julian says we have another month as well before the baby,” she insisted. Nothing could erase the concern from Muriel’s face though. Magni had been the tie breaker when he loudly proclaimed he wanted Cleo to come too. Outvoted, Muriel sulked but took them both.
“There you are, Mo Stoirín. All done.”
Magni leapt up and brushed his fingers along the new ridges in his hair. Then he turned his wide smile to Muriel.
“Just like yours, Papa!”
Cleo commanded herself to not cry at such a sweet declaration and blamed her hormones for being so affected. Muriel had to pause and collect his thoughts but then his chest seemed to swell with pride.
“Just like mine...”
He reached out and set a gentle hand on Magni’s head then quick as he could, Muriel pulled Magni into the water.
They both fell over into the water and broke into a thunderous laughter. Magni reached over to splash Muriel who in retaliation held him in a bear hug.
Cleo watched it all, amused. The baby seemed to want to join in as she felt them kicking around. She placed a hand over her stomach.
“Don’t worry, little one. This will be here for you too.”
As the boys settled down Magni waved back at Cleo.
“Mama, how many fish do you think I’ll catch? I bet I can get more than Papa!”
“I think if there’s any fish left after your racket, you’ll both be lucky.”
Muriel smiled sheepishly then straightened out and began explaining the process.
“This is how I taught your Mama to fish too.”
Muriel thought back to their first journey together, remembering how nervous he’d been.
“She’s a city dweller though so it didn’t go so well,” he fake whispered to Magni who looked scandalized and utterly intrigued.
“I can hear you two and the baby doesn’t appreciate your bad mouthing their Mother!”
The two just laughed and continued with the lesson.
It had been some time before any fish actually showed up again but Muriel caught a fair amount. Magni acted like he was most successful fisherman in the world as he bound back up to Cleo brandishing his three fish. As a treat they decided to build up a fire in the woods and roast the fish.
“Wait! I can do it!” Magni called out before Muriel could strike his flint.
He stared at the fire as a look of serious concentration came over his face. A small flame ignited in the middle of the bundle and quickly caught.
“We’ll never hear the end of this,” Cleo muttered to Muriel just as Magni turned to them looking proud. “Three fish and elemental magic. This will be all he talks about for weeks.”
Cleo smiled as she said it though. Muriel and her were proud of their boy. They stayed out in the woods until the sun started to set.
Muriel ended up having to carry Magni back after the boy had fallen asleep in front of the fire.
“He’s getting so big,” Muriel commented.
Cleo held onto his arm as they clamored over the forest floor.
“That makes two of us. I bet this baby is as big as you already!”
“Wouldn’t that be a sight?”
“I think Julian would faint during the birth if that was the case.”
Muriel grumbled slightly.
“I thought you were over this. Of course Julian is going to deliver the baby. He’s our Doctor!”
“... doesn’t mean I have to like it.”
“You don’t have anything to be jealous of,” she teased. “Besides, it won’t be the first time he’s been in a delivery room with me.”
Muriel groaned and rolled his eyes.
“You almost died that time...”
“And Julian saved me and Magni.”
Cleo rubbed his arm soothingly. She knew he worried about more than just someone he didn’t get along with being there.
When they reached their house Muriel gently laid Magni down on his bed then closed the door to his room. When he turned around Cleo motioned for him to come over. She reached out and placed Muriel’s hand on her belly.
It took only a moment for Muriel to feel a strong kick under his palm. It still amazed him.
“See how strong they are. They’re ready to meet you.”
Muriel nodded and crouched down to place a kiss on the spot he felt the kick.
“Our little family...”

It’s finally here!!! Chapter five!!! It’s always when I’m excited about writing something when my health goes back downhill 😅 but I’m fine! And we have chapter five! Domestic fluff and two new characters 😉 Catch up here:
⚠️ Warnings: Nightmare, mentions of blood, mentions of previous trauma, mentions of previous violence. ⚠️
Story ft. Asra Alnazar, Nadia Satrinava, Portia Devorak, Julian Devorak, Lucio Morgasson, Muriel of the Kokhuri, Andi, Cleo Rosehyn, Godiva “Goldie” Köhler, @theroyalmage Emrys Trevellyn/Satrinava, Kit Hunter, @heartofnopal Quetzalli
Bound By Ash And Smoke: An Arcana AU
It was always the sweat.
The blood.
And the pain.
Flashes of bright lights pointed down into a metal cage. The sounds of cheering and cries of anger filled the room.
If you let them, your senses could easily overtake you. Too much of everything and the knot inside that wouldn’t go away.
A young man walked into the ring determined to ignore everything but whatever was in front of him. Nothing else mattered in that moment but survival.
Long unwashed black hair swung around him wildly. If he’d seen a mirror lately he might even think he looked quite feral. Luckily there weren’t any mirrors in their “barracks”.
The figure in front of him was big but not as big as him. That was all they were, big or small faceless figures. It was all he could afford them because if The Count sent them in with his “Executioner” then he knew how it had to end.
He was ready, he had to be.
For the sweat.
The blood.
And the pain.
“AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH”
Muriel shot straight up in bed, reaching for some faceless foe and crying out. Where were they? It’s not safe. It’s not safe. It’s not safe...
A pair of light green eyes shine through the dark figure and slowly he heard a soft voice.
“Muriel.... Muriel... it’s okay... we’re safe... everything is okay.. Lucio is gone. We’re safe. You’re safe, darling.”
The real world seemed to begin at those eyes and slowly the rest came back into focus. Freckles stood out on porcelain skin like constellations and her hands were up with the palms facing him but respecting his space. Soft curls were wild and even though she was on her knees they still brushed the bed.
Muriel was safe, he was in his own bed in his townhouse and Lucio really was gone. The room around him that had once been so bare was now filled with life and color. Art hung on the walls and soft carpets littered the floor making it feel more like a home. Most importantly though, Cleo was here.
Muriel reached out to cup her jaw and they both started breathing in sync with a relaxing breath technique that Cleo had taught him.
“...sorry.” He mumbled once his heart stopped racing. Cleo lifted a brow at him and didn’t need words.
Muriel smiled slightly.
“I know... I know. Instead of apologizing try saying what I’m grateful for.” He paused.
“I’m grateful that you’re here to help me”
Cleo wound her arms around his neck and gave him a light kiss before pressing her forehead against his.
“I’ll always be here for you, my love.” She whispered.
They ignored the problems that came with that statement for a moment.
Life hadn’t been easy for Muriel Kokhuri since he was abandoned in Vesuvia as a child. It felt like there was always some new trouble hiding around the corner. He’d learned to escape police, steal food, and fight to protect himself and his best friend, Asra Alnazar. Unfortunately, he’d learned a little too well and gained some very unwanted attention.
Shaking off the fog of unwanted feelings, Muriel got up to get ready for the day. The familiarity of the routine helped him calm down.
Cleo padded over to the little kitchen to start the coffee maker and hummed to herself. Despite the chilly house, she waited while still wearing Muriel’s much too large shirt. The sight caught his eye and he paused a moment to take it in. The morning light was shining through the small kitchen window and bouncing off of his lover. Her smile was brighter than any sunlight to him though and he found himself reliant on gazing at her loving face. The smell of freshly ground coffee beans and brewing filled their small rooms.
Muriel walked over to the kitchen once he’d washed up and dressed to wrap his arms around Cleo’s waist and pull her towards him. He gently laid his chin on her shoulder to watch the coffee with her.
“Good morning, mo ghràdh”
Muriel lightly nuzzled her neck in response which brought a small giggle from her.
“I thought coffee first would be the best course of action,” she explained.
“Mm, I agree. It also delays you getting dressed...” Muriel whispered in Cleo’s ear.
She slipped out of his arms and gave him a playful look when he groaned and reached for her.
“I thought you wanted a better look?”
She twirled and the large shirt fanned out at the bottom almost like a ballroom dress. As she amused herself, Muriel darted over and picked her up over his shoulder. Despite the laughing protest he managed to make it the few steps to their bed and deposited Cleo on it. Before she could wiggle away he laid down on top of her with an exaggerated sigh as if she was a pillow after a long day. The resulting laughter filled their small space and Muriel smiled while nuzzling his nose into her wild hair. In between laughs Cleo managed to get out:
“Oh, mo ghràdh, what are you? A hibernating bear!”
Muriel gave a playful roar close to her ear and the two broke out in a new round of laughing.
As they finally calmed down, Cleo traced the muscles along Muriel’s back and hummed gently. They knew they should be getting to work but that only heightened their enjoyment of this stolen moment.
Until the sudden ringing of Muriel’s work phone cut through. He groaned and sat up to grab the phone next to the bed.
“Kokhuri speaking.”
A muffled voice could be heard in the room. Muriel’s eyebrows came together in a look of slight frustration.
“Asra, I can do my job. I don’t need help.”
A longer string of muffled words.
“Then the last thing we need is a new person near her... even if they are your person.”
The conversation seemed to go nowhere though as Muriel continued to look more frustrated.
“Already there? Fine. I need to be on my way.” A muffled goodbye then he sat the phone back down. Cleo didn’t ask, Muriel would tell her when he was ready so instead she got up and filled his mug with the fresh coffee and brought it to him.
“Thank you,” he took a long sip. “I’m going to need this... the Prime Minister received a threat last night.”
Cleo’s eyes widened but she stayed quiet.
“Asra was called in. He’s sending an agent.” The thought was still slightly insulting to Muriel’s pride but more so he distrusted strangers especially when threats were made. As he mulled it over though he noticed a text message notification from early in the morning.
“‘Zalli?”
Cleo turned from where she was filling her own mug.
“A sheòid? You haven’t heard from her in some time.”
Muriel opened the message.
“Information
Meeting place: Rowdy Raven
Time: When the hummingbird flies
- Q”
Short and to the point, she really preferred in person communication.
Only a few miles away in a basement below a local bar, a phone buzzed with a new message.
A woman grabbed the phone to read it.
“Understood.
- M”
She let out a sigh and turned to look at her partner who had thankfully fallen asleep while they waited for an answer. In the low light she could still see the heavy bags under his eyes, a downfall of such pale skin. His vivid red hair stuck out everywhere and the desk around him was littered with papers. She reached out and took one of his hands in hers, her darker skin creating a contrast to his sickly white hand.
“Don’t worry, Ilya. It’ll be over soon.”

Let’s start with a warning: ANGST
When everything is said and done, Lucio is put away and Vesuvia can begin to heal. But first, Cleo needs to know who she was before her death. Only one person has those answers, the former Count of Vesuvia Lucio Morgasson.
⚠️Warnings: Angst, Mentions of Death, Mentions of Abuse, Mentions of Suicide⚠️ This is about Cleo healing and first she has to find out what happened.
Who Am I Now? (Pt 1/2)
Vesuvia still stood.
Despite the pain and suffering that the city had seen in such a short time, it stood. In the years to come the residents would call it the “Unbreakable city” or the “Stalwart city”. For now though, the people were only thinking of reclaiming their homes and picking up what was left of their lives.
Lucio’s reign left dark scars everywhere. Even the end of that reign wasn’t enough to pull everyone back from the safety of Muriel’s land. Although, perhaps it was because of the prisoner locked away in the palace dungeons more than anything.
Cleo paused in front of the large metal doorway that led down to those dungeons. In her mind she weighed the pros and cons of descending to face the man who had tried to destroy her home. The man she watched rip the heart from Khamgalai and even his own Mother, Morga.
Lucio Morgasson was down those steps and Cleo knew he held the secrets of her past. The only question for her though was if she wanted to know.
Cleo moved towards the gate and hesitantly reached out for the handle.
A sudden snap behind her caused her to release it and jump around in a panic. Only to see a small bird hopping around the low wall nearby.
Cleo straightened her dress and chastised herself. It wasn’t like her to be so indecisive or jumpy. If she wanted to do something then she usually did so without shame or doubt.
Pulling herself together, Cleo turned on her heel and threw open the rusted gate so she could finally take the steps.
The stone walls only held a few candles on the way down but the main chamber was well lit. The guards sat at a low table with a deck of playing cards and laughed at whatever joke passed. It warmed Cleo’s heart to hear laughter. One guard spotted her and quickly jumped up.
“Miss Cleo! Whatever are you doing here?”
“It’s alright, Ludo. I’m here to speak with the prisoner. The Countess is aware of this meeting.” Cleo produced a short note with Nadia’s seal. Ludo took it to look over.
“Yes, ma’am...” Ludo rolled the note back up and handed it back. “But Miss Cleo, I can’t see why you’d want to talk to him.”
Cleo only gave him a small smile in response. Ludo bit his lip but led her to a small chamber with another metal door. The inside featured some plain furniture and means of entertainment but the occupant was nowhere to be seen.
“I’ll give you some privacy but we’ll be right around this corner if you need us, Miss.” Ludo gave Cleo one last look in hopes she’d change her mind but her eyes were already searching the room.
Far in the back corner she spotted him.
Without The Devil inhabiting his body, Lucio looked so much more human and tired. Golden blonde hair hung limply all over his head, makeup was smeared around his eyes, and he had only been given a simple outfit to wear.
Cleo recalled the moment she first saw him. The Count made his grand entrance during the masquerade at the height of its revelry. Pure white and red clothing stood out against the colorful world around him and he seemed to shine from all the gold. A shudder of fear ran through Cleo then along with the indescribable feeling of familiarity that she’d noticed whenever they met.
It didn’t take long for The Count’s inhuman eyes to land on the partygoers. Cleo would never forget the look of shock then insatiable hunger that reached his eyes when he spotted her.
“Cleo, my darling! My Princess! I did not recognize you before but now I see, it really is you!”
Muriel moved in front of her in an attempt to hide her from that horrible gaze.
“Scourge! My greatest executioner! I see you’ve been keeping my girl warm for me. How thoughtful.” Lucio sneered.
Muriel stood firm though, not allowing Lucio even a glimpse of Cleo.
“Now now, Scourge. I only loaned her to you as a gift. Now I think I’d like her back!”
Cleo gasped as the tendrils of magic snaked around her body like rope then pulled her. She desperately tried to fight the invisible force but it was too strong.
Muriel grabbed her arm though and their magic entwined. The ropes failed and an angry frown appeared on Lucio’s face.
“I said! I want her back! She’s mine! I bought her and she promised me!”
Cleo’s head was reeling with the confusion but all her energy was focused on keeping The Devil’s magic away. No moment could be spared for these nonsense declarations.
... at least she had thought they were nonsense.
Once the group had escaped to the safety of Muriel’s hut, Cleo began to think on what Lucio had said. The more she tried to search her memory, the worse she felt about the whole thing. Her dreams became strange moments that she didn’t recognize.
Flashes of elegant rooms, feelings of soft skin, the sounds of loud lascivious moans, the smell of blood. the sting of bruises.. the hopeless fear and regret in a pair of beautiful silver eyes...
She confronted Muriel about them and he’d told her a little about her past. At first, it was an overload of information. Lucio and her had been together for over 10 years? They’d been in love? Cleo met Muriel many years ago in the palace? They were a couple there? And probably the hardest to wrap her mind around, Magni was her son... and Lucio’s. None of it made sense and she only had more questions that Muriel couldn’t answer. Only one other person could answer them.
“‘Lo? What are you doing here?” His voice even sounded different now that he was human again but a wave of familiarity came over her. Cleo held her ground in front of the metal door.
“... My name is Cleo.”
Silence.
The man finally moved and sat down at the little table in his cell.
“Of course.”
More silence.
The tension was almost suffocating.
“I... I have some questions. Questions that only you can answer.”
Lucio tilted his head to look at her.
“Your giant protector isn’t talking? Well he never was chatty.”
“His name is Muriel.”
Lucio’s mouth opened like he was about to comment then thought better of it. Cleo took that as a good sign.
“He said that we only met after I’d been with you for some time.”
Lucio made a light humming noise she assumed was confirmation.
“... you know who I was... before. And what happened to me...”
Lucio’s eyebrow raised at that part.
“You... don’t remember?” There was something underneath his usual tone, something so much deeper. Suddenly he was up and moving towards the door.
“What are y-“
He wrapped his hands around the bars and stared into her eyes, silencing her mid-sentence. For a moment, the cold silver seemed to hold a strong determination but after a moment he blinked and it was gone. The gleam in his eyes had faded.
“No... you don’t know who I am...”
Cleo shook her head.
“You’re the Former Count of Vesuvia, Lucio.”
Lucio made a face and recoiled as though she’d slapped him. The pain was clear in his eyes even though he refused to look back at her.
“... why would you want to know?” He whispered towards the wall.
“Well,” Cleo was confused. “It’s... my life.”
Lucio gave her a dark chuckle.
“No. It wasn’t.”
Cleo paused, more confused now than before. She had to think a moment before proceeding.
“This is my choice. There are really important pieces of the past that I,” Magni’s face flashed in her mind. “I just have to know.”
Lucio’s shoulders slumped. He pinched the bridge of his nose between his eyes and leaned against the metal door.
“Is this part of my ‘retribution’? Noddy has a sick sense of humor.”
They both waited. For what? Probably for the other to back down. Unfortunately one of them remembered how stubborn the other could be.
“... we met in Celtica,” Lucio began. “I beat up some bandits that were hanging around the capitol and the council promised me a girl from the ‘best brothel in the world’.
Rosehyn Brothel, you were the madam’s little darling. You were quite a flirt,” he smiled a bit at the memory. “When I picked you the madam didn’t want to let you go. I ended up having to throw in some gold to get you out of the hag’s place.
You were pretty young.”
He paused, hoping it would be enough for Cleo. But she held firm.
“We spent ten years together, most of it back when I was a mercenary. It all felt so easy back then,” he sighed. “We loved each other and we had a promise... it isn’t important now. I broke it...”
His voice held a tone that he was talking about more than just a promise.
Cleo searched Lucio’s face, trying to remember any of it. Something definitely seemed so familiar but she could never place it.
“... why did you break the promise?”
Lucio let out a humorless snort.
“Bad counsel... fear...”
“What were you afraid of?”
Lucio was quiet. He wanted to atone, to be able to move forward. But he couldn’t look at this stranger in the woman he loved and betrayed’s body. Not when down here at his lowest, all he wanted was to throw himself in her arms. So he avoided it for now.
“I thought you’d betrayed me... I.. I didn’t... I never meant for it to... to get so bad.” He almost choked on the words.
“... how bad did it get?” Cleo’s voice was soft.
“I swear! I was just... just so angry! Then I felt like that damn scar was a reminder!”
He pointed at her chest but still didn’t look at her. Cleo brushed her hand over her sternum. So he did know.
“You know how I got this?”
Lucio scoffed.
“Of course! It felt like you’d stabbed me every time I saw it!”
Cleo recoiled a bit at the harsh words.
“Stabbed? What... I don’t...”
“You did it,” he cut her off coldly. “When I was in Prakra. Valdemar said you’d tried to use my knife but couldn’t. Then when he turned his back, you swallowed his pills.”
Valdemar? Prakra?... she almost died?
“Wha... what? Why was Valdemar there? Why was I in Prakra?... why would I do that?”
“You and that pesky Doctor were always close, well that was before he was possessed. You were in Prakra because I was and you went wherever I went. I didn’t want to leave you here in the palace.”
Cleo looked at the walls around her.
“I... lived here? Before Nadia?”
Lucio shrugged.
“Noddy was just a pawn to satisfy rumors. I had been told my men were turning against me. Soldiers were sent to clear out the camp... you knew they were coming and you...”
He couldn’t say it. All these years later and yet, he couldn’t say it.
Images flashed in his mind, seeing Cleo barely alive, seeing his own dagger covered in her blood, and the way she looked so pale and limp when he put her in the carriage back to Vesuvia.
“That’s when it fell apart...”
“What fell apart?”
“Us,” he finally turned and looked at her. “You never really came back to me. Each time I saw you, all I could think of was that stupid promise.”
“... what was the promise?”
Lucio sneered.
“That I would always come back to you and you would always wait for me. We were young... so very young. All that mattered when we were together was us.”
Cleo couldn’t imagine it, even being so in love with Muriel she still knew that others mattered. They couldn’t get lost in their own world.
“Then you died and-“
Ice water flooded Cleo’s body and she turned back to Lucio with wide eyes, he stopped mid-sentence.
“You... you didn’t know that?”
She shook her head. Lucio could have happily kicked himself, he wished he could take the words back. What would she say once she knew? Would she leave? Would he ever see her again? She couldn’t forgive him.
“I... I just...,” words failed Lucio.
A deep old pain settled inside his chest and the only words he could say fell out of his mouth.
“I’m sorry, ‘Lo.”

A Blessing In Disguise
Vesuvia was still and silent for once. The everyday bustle of citizens only calmed when the sun had long ago set. Most people were already warm in their beds sleeping soundly.
Then there was Julian.
Cleo moved through the streets with a small warm light above her shoulder. The clinic looked closed, as all the lights had been extinguished. Cleo knew better though. A small flicker could be seen in the very back as she walked in quietly.
Julian had a tendency to overreact at perceived threats. The front area was well maintained and welcoming, entirely due to Julian’s assistant. Cleo moved past the area and down a dimly lit hallway to Julian’s office where the light was coming from.
As expected, Dr. Julian Devorak sat at his desk which looked as though a wild cat had run through with a grudge with his face firmly planted on the top. Soft snores rose up from his squashed nose. The candle had burned low so Cleo lit a few more before setting her basket on top of the desk with a violent THUMP!
“Ahhhhhhhhh! You can’t take me by surprise!!!” Julian’s face shot up and he wildly looked around, likely for invading pirates.
Cleo waited patiently with a brow raised for him to calm down. As reality set in, Julian stared at Cleo until she was fully in focus.
“Cleo? Darling, beautiful, wondrous healer of the mind. You should know not to sneak up on me like that. I could have hurt you!”
The drama dripped from every word and Cleo rolled her eyes. She leaned closer to pull off a pencil and multiple papers that were stuck to the Doctor’s face.
“Ruins the seriousness when you look as though you were attacked by a vengeful Secretary, dear.”
Julian smiled and ran his hand through his hair as he surveyed the office.
“I see your imposing bodyguard hasn’t accompanied you and that it seems to be quite late.” Concern tinged Julian’s words.
Cleo opened up the basket she’d brought with her and began pulling various food items out to set in front of her workaholic friend.
“Muriel didn’t want to come see you but I imagine he soon worried and is likely waiting outside. Now for you, Ilya. You have a perfectly good bed where you should be asleep!” Cleo scolded him and set down a plate in front of Julian.
Grey eyes shone in the low light and Julian snatched the sandwich up greedily.
“You’re a blessing in disguise, my dear.” He said reverently between rushed bites.
“Because I made you a sandwich?” Cleo smirked.
“Yes,” Julian nodded seriously.

A bit of bittersweet with a happy ending? Absolutely.
Pairing: Muriel x OC! Cleo Rosehyn
Art by @frankielucky
“Soft”
Beyond the gates of Vesuvia, an untamed secluded world thrived unknown to the citizens next door. The dark forest held mystery, magic, and a sense of foreboding that couldn’t quite be explained. In the early morning hours, the smell of dew laid heavily on grass hung in the air that filled with the light music of birds beginning their day. A glance looked just like a perfect painting of all a woodland paradise should be.
For one the residents inside though, the morning became very bleak with the arrival of guests.
When Muriel heard the knock on his door he considered just not answering. Maybe they’d go away? Maybe it was a trick of his mind? Who would visit all the way out here? The problem being that Muriel knew exactly who would be visiting all the way out in the woods.
The younger magicians face lit up with a smile as the door opened despite the gruff glare his friend was giving him. In the span of a few minutes, Asra explained his travel plans and led his confused houseguest into the hut with promises of being home soon. Then like a flash of lightning, Asra was gone.
It took Muriel a little longer to fully grasp the situation. With a heavy sigh he looked to the girl who was happily sitting on the floor with Inanna.
It had been over a year since Muriel had found Cleo out in the woods with no memories. Asra took care of her the best he could but it was true that these trips were necessary to stock up the magic shop and likely for his mental health as well.
A year, Muriel mused to himself. It felt both like he’d stumbled on Cleo yesterday and that she’d been gone forever.
“She’s still gone...” he reminded himself. The girl on the floor had only a years worth of memories and none with the Mountain Man himself so in his mind, Cleo was still gone.
Muriel watched her excitedly cuddle Inanna and the wolf returned the affection with equal enthusiasm. A beautiful carefree smile spread on Cleo’s face, one he’d certainly never seen before her return. It had all the innocence of a child without any of the burdens that plagued his former lover.
Abruptly, Cleo stood and moved over to grab Muriel’s hand. The shock of the sudden touch sent tingling up his arm.
She made sure Muriel was watching then formed a “C” with her hand, pressing the open part to her throat then sliding it down to her stomach.
“Hungry? ... I’ll make breakfast.” Muriel spoke quietly and pulled his hand back gently but quickly. Touching her felt too intimate.
After breakfast Muriel realized they had another hurdle.
“... I have to go get some supplies... you could wait here... I’ll have Inanna-“
As soon as the word ‘supplies’ came out though Cleo had run to her stuff that Asra brought and pulled a yellow cloth bag out. After securing it across her body Cleo smiled up at Muriel and held both hands up with crossed index and middle fingers shaking them.
“Ready?... you don’t have t-“
Cleo shook her fingers again with a sterner expression.
“... fine. Stay close.”
Cleo may have changed in a lot of ways but Muriel wasn’t ready to see if she was just as stubborn as before. Mostly because he strongly suspected that she was.
The signing had been Asra’s idea when they realized Cleo couldn’t speak. Unsurprising to Muriel she took to it fast. Well, she had spoken many languages before she disappeared so it made sense. Though it was originally meant to be a placeholder until she could speak again, Cleo still hadn’t uttered a single word. Her signing was excellent and her main form of communication but Asra couldn’t get her to even try speaking verbally.
Muriel shortened his stride considerably so that he could keep pace with Cleo in case she tried to talk to him. He’d never admit that he also liked watching as Cleo walked around looking at everything in wonder.
The weak sunlight still bounced off her thick red curls which reached her lower back. A welcome sight since in the palace Muriel had always seen her with her hair up with ornaments throughout.
Well, except at night when she stayed in his room. Muriel’s eyes always wandered to Cleo when she would undo the elaborate hairstyles. Sometimes he’d even help her brush her hair out...
Muriel shook his head and chastised himself. This wasn’t his Cleo. His Cleo was gone.
Once they reached a good spot Muriel told Cleo to begin collecting moss. He held up a small piece from a nearby tree for her to see.
“It’s soft and green. Here.” He held it out for her to feel.
Cleo’s small pale hand gently brushed the moss in his palm. The carefree smile slipped into a contemplative look as she ran her fingers back over the moss. A small blush touched Muriel’s ears as Cleo’s hand went from the moss to the skin of his inner wrist. How he wanted to fling himself away, to run, to hide until she couldn’t remember him, to... hold her close again...
“Soft.”
Muriel started at the sound of a light musical voice.
Cleo trailed her hand up his arm and brought it to rest where she could cup his jaw. Strong bright eyes stared into Muriel’s with what he thought could be recognition. A small shy smile tugged at Cleo’s lips.
“And green.”
The forest could have caught fire around them and it wouldn’t have mattered. The pair only had eyes for each other.
“... Cleo.”
Muriel never again said this wasn’t Cleo. His Cleo was still in there, he could only say that he felt it when she looked at him. A million thoughts ran through his mind that morning as they collected supplies but now he was the one who felt tongue tied. Cleo on the other hand moved around excitedly demonstrating her verbal communication skills by describing things in the woods. It brought a smile to Muriel’s face when he thought:
‘It’s just like Cleo, she won’t do anything unless she knows she can do it perfectly...”
Muriel let her talk all day as they went about their tasks. Usually the sound of someone speaking so much made Muriel frustrated but after two years without it, Cleo’s voice sounded like music to him.
Later that evening when they both began winding down for bed, Cleo went to rummage through the pile of things Asra brought. Muriel only had to wonder what she was looking for before she proudly returned brandishing her hairbrush. Cleo shoved it in Muriel’s hands then sat with her back to him and waited.
This was definitely his Cleo.
