My dear lgbt+ kids,
When it comes to healthcare, you’ll occasionally encounter things presented as an opinion or as something up for debate - when there’s actually clear scientific facts on those topics.
You can probably think of some general examples off the top of your head, like:
Vaccines (They save lives. In fact, they are one of the most effective tools for reducing mortality rates worldwide)
Pasteurized milk (Raw milk is not healthier than pasteurized milk, it’s actually unsafe. Pasteurization kills harmful bacteria which can cause severe illness)
Fluoride (Water fluoridation is a safe and effective public health measure)
Climate change (It exists and directly impacts respiratory and cardiovascular health)
“Detox” (The liver and kidneys detox your body naturally; detox teas, juice cleanses etc. are unnecessary)
Cancer (Cancer isn’t just one disease, it’s an umbrella term for many different diseases and that’s why it’s very, very difficult, if not impossible, to just find the one simple fix to end cancer forever)
Sugar substitutes (They have been extensively studied and are safe for consumption within recommended limits)
There’s a lot of misinformation out there and it often thrives because it plays on fears (such as the natural fear of illness, dangerous substances and life-threatening side effects). Nobody wants to willingly put themselves or their loved ones into danger - but this absolutely natural desire for protection can be exploited.
Some common tactics for that are:
relying on personal anecdotes (emotional stories often feel more reliable or trustworthy than cold, hard data, even though they aren’t)
appealing to those who distrust authority (the suggestion that governments/scientists/corporations/“they” are conspiring against you feels trustworthy if it seemingly “confirms” fears you already had)
misusing scientific terminology (Complex-sounding terms can make something appear credible and well-researched, even if these terms are used completely incorrectly)
giving quick, easy answers or fixes to complex problems (health is a complicated, multifaceted topic and there’s oftentimes no easy-cut answer to why a certain person gets sick or if a now-healthy person will still be as healthy in 10 years. This unpredictability can feel scary, and oversimplified answers can offer comfort)
While health myths impact anyone, they disproportionately affect marginalized groups - for example chronically ill or disabled people but also our community.
That’s because health myths (or outright health lies) can perpetuate stigma and create barriers to accessing evidence-based care.
Myths specifically targeting queer health often follow the same patterns we talked about above. Let's take a closer look at some common topics and break down the facts behind them:
Pedophilia (There is no evidence linking sexual orientation or gender identity to pedophilia or predatory behavior. This myth is rooted in bigotry and perpetuates harmful stereotypes)
HIV/AIDS (it’s not “the gay disease” or even a “punishment for being gay”. It’s a virus that can affect people of all genders and sexual orientations)
Regret rates (Regret rates for gender-affirming care are very low, even lower than for getting a new hip or a tattoo.)
Regret rates, 2.0 (“Regret” does not automatically translate to “they were wrong about being trans”. A trans person could regret medical decisions for a multitude of reasons (even external factors like a lack of social support or experience of harassment) and still continue to identify as trans)
Mental illness (The higher rate of mental health issues in queer people is caused by external factors like discrimination and social exclusion, not by the identity itself. Being queer is not a mental illness.)
Conversion therapy (It doesn’t work. It also causes severe psychological harm including an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide)
Treating these myths as not “only” homophobia and transphobia but also as health misinformation may feel nitpicky, but I think it’s important. If we don’t, it’s easy to dismiss them as merely a matter of “not accidentally saying something offensive” - but there’s more at stake than hurt feelings. Health misinformation can prevent people from getting the medical care they need and put their lives at risk. And that applies to “Trans people often regret their surgeries” as much as it does to “Covid vaccines are dangerous”.
So, look out for those typical patterns and warning signs - not only in the general “health and wellness” area but also in discussions about queer issues.
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

dandelion elixir in progress! picked from a local friends farm, wilted to free the bugs, and processed into petals. from there i added them to jars and poured local & manuka honey and 70% alcohol over them using the simpler’s method, respectively. i used 70% alcohol to offset the moisture of the petals, though you could probably get away with 40%. i plan to flip the jar of honey over and shake the tincture every day for a month to ensure a good extraction. i plan to combine the strained products together into an elixir and save some leftover tincture and honey to keep separate. updates to come!
the flower of dandelion is exhilarant, meaning it uplifts the mood! as an elixir with its sweet taste, the medicine is even sweeter on the soul! dandelion as a whole plant is stimulating to the liver and the flowers, while weaker than the root in this way, still convey an effect on the liver. the leaves are a diuretic as well as nutritive, replenishing the minerals lost through urination unlike traditional allopathic diuretics the roots make a wonderful alterative coffee substitute, effectively cleansing the blood. the whole plant is edible, flowers, leaves, roots and all!
i would not recommend internal use of this plant (leaves and roots, i’m less worried about petals) if you take diuretics as it can have a potentiating effect and can potentially stress your kidneys as well as be very dehydrating. avoid using this plant if you take lithium especially, as it can change serum levels of lithium, thus altering its effectiveness and can have mood impacts. if you choose to use this herb when taking these medicines, first and foremost talk to your doctor! also monitor yourself closely and discontinue use if you experience changes in symptoms, urine output, symptoms of dryness (dry mouth, eyes, skin) or experience mid back pain. this post is not to be considered as medical advice.

How to rid your body of toxins:
Have a liver. If there is a “toxin” that your liver and or kidneys don’t filter out and dispel, consult a medical professional who has spent over a decade studying bodily functions.
Don’t:
Put some random possibly harmful plant in your body because someone on tiktok said it cleanses your liver of “toxins”

Please, help Ahmed and his father, the situation continues to worsen.
Did you know that while you scrolled, that while you looked away, that while you diverted your eyes and ears from the immense suffering in Gaza, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed by Israel?
But yeah... keep scrolling and looking away as this continues.
Hospitals in Gaza are crowded and severely understaffed and unsafe. They blockade means no treatment available for so many people.
Ahmed's father needs daily dialysis treatments and oxygen to keep him alive, along with an urgent liver resection (costing over $300). He has hepatitis, heart disease and kidney disease.
On top of being responsible for his father's medical care, they need food and water to survive. Ahmed, like many starving people in Gaza are forced to go to these 'aid' centres where people are being slaughtered and massacred lining up for food. In an effort to 'disperse the crowds'.
At one of these "aid" centres - Ahmed was severely injured, and needs surgery to reconnect the tendons in his leg. His leg risks amputation, could you imagine the pain and suffering of being responsible for your father and being injured, disabled yourself? All of this under the threat of bombardment and mass ethnic cleansing and deportation from your homeland.
$8,911 / $40,000 raised via the chuffed link, but money can reach Ahmed quicker through the PayPal link, but specify that the money is for Ahmed, as this PayPal collects money for multiple families from Gaza, thank you !!
Please follow @mazen-fmaily to support him.

I had to prep for a colonoscopy. Blah blah blah. Not important.
What IS important is that I had to do a 24hr. clear liquid diet, and it sucked. I was exhausted the whole time. My brain was foggy. I was cold. I'm NEVER cold! The body needs fuckin food!
Cleansing fasts are so fucking stupid. If your liver and kidneys are functioning your body is cleansing just fine. If they aren't functioning a 'cleanse' isn't going to do shit!
Cleansing isn't healthy. It's just self-deprivation! It's self-deprivation for self-deprivation's sake! If you want to have some kind of spiritual fast for self-deprivation, fine. There is a place for spiritual self-denial and ritual suffering in some religious narratives. But you are NOT helping your body! Stop telling yourself that it's 'healthy'!

Does yves like piss and shit like the rest of us mortals
tw: piss n shit n puke, like ewww stuff
Yes, he does (or did)! But it's very different compared to a normal person's bodily function. As he fully controls his digestion, which includes the contractions of his gastrointestinal tract, the secretion of his digestive enzymes, and even the gut fermentation process, Yves can simply choose when to excrete.
But because he eats very little (See the series: Best and Worst of Both Worlds) and has such impossible biology, Yves usually chooses to completely break down his food down to the simplest of molecules and absorb everything. Leaving no faeces to expel. Sometimes when he has to consume deadly toxins or large amounts of food, he can choose not to absorb it into his body. Yves can either choose to vomit it out or instantly induce gastric emptying and shoot them through his intestines in a split second, but he usually chooses the former.
When it comes to urinating, it's not automatic. His blood wouldn't necessarily even get filtered through his kidneys unless necessary. That's why his bladder is almost always empty. He only produces urine if he detects that his blood pressure is getting a bit too high as his metabolic processes produce quite a lot of water.
He doesn't need to remove urea or other metabolic wastes, because his liver is efficient enough to utilize them. All of them. Making Yves this eldritch being in the medical community.
But, if he is poisoned or infected, he can use these methods to quickly cleanse his body before any symptoms show up.
Yves actually does not need food or water to survive with a body as efficient as his, but it lets him live a lot more comfortably. He has the illogical ability to reabsorb water from urine that's already stored in his bladder. Whatever he burns while exerting himself never escapes his body. It just gets converted back into substances he could use to sustain his life.
Everything in his body can be recycled within himself, but he will definitely look worse for wear as doing this maneuver causes him a great deal of stress. Mentally and physically.
So he does shit and piss. But he doesn't have to. Yves does it to make it easier for himself and allow himself to enjoy life better. To fit in with the rest.
But his freakish self-sufficiency comes in handy at various times.

Day 4, May 25
I'm stil trying to get all of this rolling and running smoothly but we're gonna get there. I've got some pictures to add, some links to share, some news articles & sources to provide, and more. Refer to the previous post if you're interested. Stay tuned, I promise they're coming. I'm just old, a bit unpracticed, and more disorganized than I'd like or than I'd care to admit. I've got a personal deadline for plenty of this so we're good to go. ---- This hunger strike is in conjunction with Veterans for Peace and their "Fasting 40-Days for Gaza" action. I'm on strike to help raise money for my friends in need in Gaza; to show solidarity with the Palestinians undergoing ethnic cleansing and genocide by the Israeli fascists; and, to stand in solidarity with Veterans for Peace. ---- If you're able, I ask that you provide aid to my friends Shahad and Fatemah, in Gaza. I'm sure you're aware of the horrendous conditions under which they and their families are enduring because of the ongoing genocide, inflicted on them by the Israeli fascists. Any and all aid is greatly appreciated. Shahad's GoFundMe Shahad's Tumblr Fatemah's GoFundMe
---- The hunger strike continues. Not too much new to document on my end but there have been some changes. I didn't sleep very well the first three nights. Probably due to a number of reasons. However, when consulting my doctors, they did mention that insomnia would probably begin to manifest. With that said, contrary to what's typical, I slep ten hours over the last 24-hours. Waking up was difficult but not impossible. My dreams were more lucid than typical; I don't remember much other than they were filled with an overwhelming sense of disorientation. I'll tell you something about myself, one of a few things that enrages me is, in fact, feeling disoriented. Luckily, Charli, my sweet angel was there. The soreness from lack of food has increased--maybe, become more consisitent might be a better way of putting it--but not too markedly. The same could be said of my lethargy. Doc says, at this point, my cognitive functioning should begin to decline. I've had a fairly persistent headache but nothing too bad yet. It should also be stated, I've drastically reduced my prescription regime in order to reduce the risk of kidney or liver failure.
