Hello friend!

First and extremely importantly you need space. I strongly encourage a minimum pen size of roughly 3x5 (vet and shelter told me to make sure my pens were no smaller than that size for my rabbits but a bit bigger is good). If your rabbit is not free roam, you can certainly make it bigger (my pen is a 6x6 my rabbits are semi free roam). I use a tall dog playpen to build mine so that or a Z pen will make for easy building. You can get creative with how you block out an area but space is incredibly important.

As for what goes in it:

-litter box of course but what's important is size. Do not get a tiny corner triangle box it's unhealthy for their posture. Opt for a cat litter box that's big enough for your rabbits to sit comfortably in and turn around easily in.

-hay tower or rack. You can either hang a rack (you can literally get a metal rack basket for cheap from Lowe's or home Depot and just stuff hay in it) or a wood tower like what I have. Bunnies must have Timothy Hay available 24/7 in unlimited quantities so this is the way to ensure that. It keeps the hay from getting soiled though I do always add additional hay to the litter box. Keep the hay near the litter box to kinda just keep em poopin in the litter when they want a snack

-hides. You need at least 1 hide per rabbit. I have 4 hides for mine. I like the cute wooden Castle hides bc they are roomy and my bunnies like them a lot but really you can get creative with it. Just absolutely no igloos those are not good for rabbits or their postures (vet and shelter advice). You can do tunnels or cardboard boxes but yea hides are a necessity for rabbits.

-flooring. There's a lot of things you can do for flooring but you definitely want something to prevent your rabbits from soiling your carpet and most rabbits dislike smooth tile or hardwood (slippery on non padded feet). A few things I've seen people do are use pee pads and lay fleece, blankets, towels, or rugs on top which are good options. If you're like me and busy and want easy cleaning and a cute aesthetic, you can use EVA carpeted foam mats. They absorb well without letting urine leak through.

I would NOT advise EVA foam if your rabbits really chew and actually eat everything. while I find these dont give bunnies much leverage for biting, especially destructive ones will find a way and you don't want them eating these. My bungies are luckily not interested in chewing them so they work well. A handful of guest rabbits I've housed did well with them too. Even my more destructive guests didn't manage to bite through it well but I need to put that disclaimer because I'm kind of lucky with my rabbits behaviour.

Since you are renting i would really reccomend putting puppy pee pads under whatever you choose to protect the flooring.

It may sound selfish but idc. I don't want a dog. I'm not over Nala. I'm not ready bc of Nala. I'm not ready bc of my ocd.

Let's pretend my mom can't deal with the living room kennel... and we rehome her. All my clothes will be poison ivy for at least a year. Poison ivy will be everywhere for a long time..

The poop and urine can be cleaned.... that part will go away. That would be nice.

I just don't understand how she thinks this will work. I have to shit 3 times in the morning like a train coming into the station. I don't have time to walk a dog at 8:30 a.m. I'm pooping then. Cooking takes me time. And now much more time bc of her.

My anxiety is through the roof. And I'm just fed up with it. Riley would snuggle up in bed with someone and be obedient and good. She is a good dog. But I'm just not the right guy. I worry about anyone entering the house... i worry she will attack someone.

Beyond that I have a lot of mental health recovery to go through and she makes everything worse...... like... I'm still hallucinating and having nightmares. I'm still ocd af.

Closing Out 2023

I swear every time I come back to this site, the title mentions a new year than before. Oh well.

Sometimes I put pen to paper, sometimes I write letters to others, sometimes I visual journal in blank notebooks, sometimes...there's here.

Recently Dad and I spent two different days cleaning Colin and Susie's apartment. They're clearly hoarders, and it was unsafe for both them and their two animals (a cat and a small dog).

I recorded myself crying when I first got there...I had so many mixed emotions. I wasn't surprised, I was very surprised, I was saddened to see the reality of what both of them were living in for several years, I felt helpless, overwhelmed...and scared for their futures being independents long-term. Like what if that couldn't happen? What if they had to go on disability? What if they couldn't work anymore?

Mom knew, didn't want to admit it...and didn't tell any of us. That made me even sadder.

I took time off work on a Wednesday one week and Thursday the following week. Everything smelled like animal urine and feces mixed with old food and BO. They weren't sleeping in a real bed and apparently hadn't for years because the dog and the cat weren't getting along...and it caused a weird territorial situation I guess? So, the bed got berried, and the room overall got filled with more things...and lost for two years. They slept on a urine-stained futon for over two years, which was on-top of a urine saturated throw rug. When we moved the rug, a perfect rug-shaped puddle was underneath; it was so soaked. AND...the amount of garbage and just never made it to a trash bin. It was very alarming.

It's tough now to not wonder if that could happen to Mom or I now. Like what would it take? When something sad and big happens, will that be how I am? When Mom, Colin, Thomas, or Dad passes? I don't know to think about it.

I want family counseling...and I don't think anyone cares for it, but though shit. We need it.

He needs to know this affected everyone, and it's not fair to anyone (including himself or his wife or his animals). I don't deserve to miss work, but I know that action was necessary. I think had I put it off to a weekend, there'd be no real time to actually 'rest' 'rest' myself. I'd feel burned out faster with work during the week...and I don't want that to happen. I want my best self at work, and I'm sure so does my colleagues.

Anyways...aside from minor cat/vet trip scares that amounted to not a ton, spending $800 on that stuff, hopefully everything starts to settle. Hopefully we can find ease-of-life for them and set them up for success long-term.
