Goosebumps Review #10
Continuing to read all those books I somehow never got around to as a kid...
(Spoilers)
One Day At Horrorland
Goosebumps (original series) #16
This was another one where I had seen the TV episode years back so I thought I already knew the story, but the book turned out to be a little different than the show. The biggest difference being that the book actually didn’t suck.
Was it a great Goosebumps book? Mmm... debatable... But at least it wasn’t a bad Goosebumps book.
The story centers around the Morris family, namely Lizzy, who serves as our point of view character... but there is also her younger brother, Luke, a somewhat annoying little brat who can’t stop screaming about special affects and enjoys pinching and punching people... Luke’s friend, Clay, the nerdy scaredy cat... Their father, who is constantly pissed off and yelling at everyone... and their mother, who tries to play the calm voice of reason. They are on vacation, lost in the middle of the desert as they try to find Zoo Gardens, which is a totally royalty free theme park that totally isn’t Busch Gardens at all... And their dad must be even worse than I am with directions if they are lost in the desert because there are only two Busch Gardens that I know of and they are in Florida and Virginia... Neither of which have deserts...
So it should be no shock to anyone that they don’t find Busch- I mean, Zoo Gardens... Instead they find a theme park they have never heard of before by the name of Horrorland. So they decide, why not? And then their car explodes.
No kidding. They don’t even make it across the parking lot before their car explodes behind them. That... kind of came out of nowhere. And seems like poor planning on the part of the monsters. I get that you don’t want them leaving, but why would you blow their car up right then and there? All you are doing is putting them on edge. It seems like you wouldn’t want your victims to be on guard before they are even in the park...
Although I guess it does get the family to split up right away, as the kids go off to enjoy the park, because what do they care if their car just exploded? Those are adult problems... While the parents go off to find a phone so they can call the police.
The park is naturally full of horror themed attractions. The Doom Slide, The Bat Barn, The Coffin Cruise, Werewolf Village, roller coasters that have out of order signs on them but are still letting people on, the only bungee jump without a cord (which I’m pretty sure is just called jumping to your death), a swimming hole full of alligators, the house of mirrors... No real horror spin on the house of mirrors. It doesn’t even have a horror themed name. It’s just a house of mirrors... Yeah, the walls try to close in on them once they are inside, but they didn’t know that was going to happen going in. So from the outside it’s just a totally out of place attraction with no effort put in to make it fit in with the rest of the park.
All of the rides have some kind of gimmick where it seems like it’s dangerous and intended to kill them, but then they come out the other side just fine and wondering if it was real or not. This is helped by the fact that a lot of the horror is unseen. They think they feel bats attacking them in the Bat Barn, but it’s too dark to see anything. They think they feel spiders crawling all over them on the Coffin Cruise but it’s too dark to see anything. They think they are sliding way too fast on the Doom Slide but it’s too dark to... Man... Most of the rides in Horrorland are done in the dark...
There are also a lot of Horrorland Horrors walking around the park. Those are the monsters that run the place. Although the kids just think they are people in costumes. They pretty much just wander around the park being dicks towards the kids. Sometimes it’s kind of funny. Like when the kids ask one monster woman if anyone has ever died in the park before and she tells them, “Only once.”
“You mean one person died here before?”
“No... I mean they only died here once. No one dies twice...”
Other times they are just flat out mean. Like telling the kids that their parents left and abandoned them there. But then, they are monsters... Being mean and scaring kids is kind of their job.
There were also two other things that kept popping up again and again, but only one of them ever came into play. The book makes a point to draw attention to the fact that every time they see other families in the park the children are always crying, and it makes a point to draw attention to the fact that they keep passing signs that say “No pinching.”
The book stays interesting and amusing the whole way through, but it doesn’t really get to the actual threat until the last few chapters. That’s when things really start to pick up. When all the monsters corner them while they are trying to find a way out of the park and tell them, surprise! You’re on a hidden camera show! Now this was the twist ending in the TV episode too, and I always thought it was kind of stupid. Yeah, we are real monsters... but this park is just a hidden camera show where we scare you for fun and other monsters watch it on TV.
Uhh... Okay...
But the book, interestingly enough, doesn’t end on that note. Instead the monsters tell them they have just won a new car to replace the one that exploded, and then they use that to lure the whole family into a monster fight pit where tons of monsters pile in and actually try to kill the family. We get an actual fight scene in a Goosebumps book where this poor family has to fight against a whole horde of weird creatures, including furry snakes... The book mentions the furry snakes a lot...
By the end the family is actually fairly bloodied but manages to survive. So the monsters congratulate them for winning the game, then tries to throw them into a purple tar pit... And this is where the no pinching sign comes into play. Through a bit of writing that was probably a bit more clever than I expect out of a Goosebumps book, Lizzy figures out the meaning of the no pinching signs and starts pinching the monsters. Which actually works... Because the monsters are living balloons and when you pinch them they deflate.
Hey... I did say calling this one a good book was debatable... So the family pinches their way out of the park, they steal a bus and drive back home, we get a silly ending that’s not even worth talking about, then end.
Honestly, I liked it, but I really wish the no pinching sign had been something else. The whole time I kept thinking they were asleep and trapped in a dream, and the reason the monsters insisted on no pinching, was because they didn’t want anyone to pinch themselves and wake up. Honestly, as silly as that is, I still feel like it would have been a better ending than living balloon animals. And what was with all the crying children. The book told me like 5 different times that any time they passed another family the kids were all crying. What was the point of telling me that so many times and then doing nothing with it?
At least give me a scene where they talk to one of the crying kids and we learn that the reason they are crying is because they have figured out what it actually going on. Maybe the kids are crying because they know that when they try to leave the monsters are going to kill them so the only way to survive is to stay in the park forever and continue being scared for the monsters’ amusement. That would have actually been a kind of scary detail. At the very least it would have been better than nothing, which is what we go...
But now that I’ve read this one... Ehh... That’s my feelings on the matter. I enjoyed it, but it’s still kind of ehh... I’m not seeing what is so great about this that it deserves its own series but Fever Swamp doesn’t.

Messrs. Meyer, Doyle and Guvernator established the business here. These gentlemen were induced to venture upon this enterprise by reason of the demand for beer of home manufacture. Mr. Peter Stumpf and Joseph Stumpf, his brother, are both experienced in the business.Â
[IOR] — Anheuser-Busch Brewing Assn, St. Louis Mo, USA
Before this venture of theirs they represented the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association here for a number of years. Mr. Guvernator was formerly in the furniture business. He is proprietor of a hotel at Atlantic City. Mr. Doyle is also a hotel keeper of Atlantic City. Mr. Meyer is an experienced German brewmaster, long engaged in the business in the city of Philadelphia.

Although so recently established, this company has already developed a trade in the city and State up to its full capacity and production. Its leading brands, "Home Beer" and "Weiner Export," are general favorites and are equal in strength and purity to any in the market. [RVCJ93]
(VCU) — 1889 Baist Atlas Map of Richmond — Plate 1 — showing Stumpf’s beer depot at the intersection of Union & Grace Streets
Stumpf was born in Offenbach, Germany and emigrated to New York in 1869 at the age of 18. He quickly broke into the brewing trade, and by 1886 he had relocated to Richmond, where he made suds for the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association.
September 2019 — 1201 West Clay Street looking west
By 1892 he broke out on his own and moved his operation to West Clay Street, where he was successful enough that he developed franchises in Petersburg, Newport News, and Phoebus. He also owned or controlled a number of saloons here in Richmond which were "tied" bars, establishments that sold only the parent company’s product.
September 2019 — finial detail at 1201 West Clay Street
He retired from the business in 1897 at the unusually young age of 46, a year after marrying his wife, Hermine Morganstern. Perhaps it was for health reasons or maybe he was simply wealthy enough that he could afford not working. Either way, it didn’t last, and he died in 1903 at the age of 52. (Find A Grave)

I'll take Sherlock and Glee for the asks game if you please.
Sherlock (2010s starring Benedict Cumberbatch)--100% of brain lights up in complete delight... until it all starts to go downhill
Firstly, as you all know, I am on the autism spectrum, and so is one of my biological parents. That is NOT an excuse for improper social behavior, but giving you the background information about possibly how and why happens (or happens to such an extent) could lend some context.
I love to create. Any kind of content. Writing, drawing, painting, photo editing, sewing, setting margins for business letters... the list could go on. It makes me so happy to take on a project that feels fun and feasible. Something I learned when I was young was, basically, if you don't have it, you don't necessarily have to buy it. Look at your materials, or at cheaper materials, and create what you want exactly the way you want it (like, if the beaded princess crown at the Busch Gardens gift shop is, in fact, too big for your head, we can hit up Walmart and get wire and beads and make a crown that fits you, in any color you want).
I've carried that attitude through most of my life. Like, nice-fitting jeans from Goodwill-- I can hem them, the length doesn't matter.
That's actually given me a lot of confidence in my abilities, and it brings out ingenuity with problem solving, especially when it's crunch time (like, signed paper needs to be delivered to the customer--whose office is in Montana--before a certain deadline in not-my-timezone? No prob. Run to my boss's office, hand him a pen, run to the fax machine, run to the phone, let the Montana contact know the doc has been sent, and bam. (Sure, the expectation may be for an engineering review, and the expected delivery method may be SharePoint link, but a signature from the maximum authority and the convenience of instant delivery? No one can complain about that.)
Things start to go south, though, when my efforts (which I consider to be "good energy," if that makes sense) don't wind up doing what I want them to do, or things turn out to be much more difficult than expected. For example, when using black paper and a white marker for a drawing, it will become clear, when one tests the quality of several white markers on a scrap paper, that some are better quality, or better suited to the tasks, than others.
But say I started with the Crayola iridescent paint marker (nice tool for outline/contrast, but not a great choice for linework or edges), and my drawing is not showing up. I must choose, then, to
1) scrap my drawing (and maybe do it again with something like a matte brush tip)
2) go over my drawing again (and again) with the Crayola in hopes of improving what I already have (though with equal probability of ruining it), or
3) become a frustrated mess of hopelessly selfish human and hide under my desk with all the dinosaurs and paper clay and other odds and ends I use for art with my kids.
More often than not, it's choice #3. I don't exactly know how to, like, have frustration for a thing, and, while still acknowledging it as important and real and meaningful (enough so that I still have desire to make the thing and make it in my own correct way), put it away in my brain's side pocket and move to perform different tasks. I tend to try and try and try to bulldoze my way through, risking breaking my supplies (because I so hate leaving projects unfinished, or with the current step/chapter unfinished), or I become sad and feel negatively about myself and my skills and the fact that I will have to put everything away in order to take a break (kids and cats, lol), then get it all out again for my next try.
Glee--cute and quirky, and then it was cutting edge, and then it was the BEST, and then it started tilting the other direction, and it ultimately fell on its own sword and became the absolute WORST
A lot of things, mostly books and classic television programs, that have been considered from, broadly, 1950 to 2020, as "things we will pass down to our grandchildren," including, but not limited to, the following:
Harry Potter-- and that's sad. That's a travesty. Some aged wine grows more precious over time. Some just goes off.
Dr. Seuss--Because he had an actual career, and writing nonsense books was only part of it. I respect that particular treasury. But he was a guy. With a life. And, in comparison, like, even if Bohemian Rhapsody is a glory film, it doesn't erase the bad choices that still stand, unchangeable, in their influence on modern history.
Mr. Rogers (ok, he helps kids learn to tie their shoes... but, I kid you not, one skit in the world of make believe had a puppet who identifies as a woman, performing in a (very fictional) talent show, during which she was dressed up as, and pretending to be, a kitten, who was singing (horrendously) an original song, in which the lyrics begged the Moon (cognizant, apparently, and generous) to give her a star as a birthday present. What the everloving fuck, here? Not to yuk anyone's yum, but... a grown man, who has created an OC 'verse for children (his main consumers) and those who watch with them. I'm seeing... possible ageplay x furry x accompanist? what accompanist? x personification of balls of rock x obvious greed and pestering as a method to be rewarded x light references to Wicca and Paganism (I don't care, but some people might. Could bring on some leading questions from the littles, too.
Magical family recipes that are actually on the back of a can of condensed soup
BMI (used as an indicator of health--Have you ever seen a male ballet dancer? Yeah, like, in jeans on the bus he just looks like a dude. In tights and a tank, he looks like Secretariat. Depending on his height, he probably weighs something like, 1.5x the expected--visually based--BMI. Put him in high-healthy, verging on overweight. He probably eats 3,000+ calories of healthy food on the daily, and regular deadlifts, eh, 100 to 130ish pound partners? See? V healthy. Chart means nothing.)
Binarily- segregated restrooms (Ok, have you seen a toilet stall in Iceland? They're mostly non-gendered, at least in big public places, like the airport. The regular stalls--usually, like, 20 of them in a row, with a couple of handicapped/accessible/baby-changing stalls on the end-- contain one regular toilet. The door and walls go from 1cm above the floor to 1cm below the ceiling. All have sliding locks that operate only from the inside, and outside hardware is barely visible; it's just the flat (no screwdriver marks) heads of the screws that brace the locks to the doors. Then there are sinks. That pour out water. And pumps. For soap. And paper towels. The entire population has a grip on what purpose bathrooms serve, as well as what people do in bathrooms, and the differentiation of both private and public spaces in order to meet most efficiently serve the population.)
Frosted Flakes is (are) the sugary sweet part(s) of a complete breakfast. (!) Conjugate that, Tony Tiger. and WTF is a "complete breakfast?"
Math problems about trains. Nobody cares about crossing paths anymore. It's all arrival time, landing time, time zone, jet lag, how late to your meeting you can be before it's considered rude (and how disheveled are you allowed to look before high fashion hits slobbiness)?
Filler foods, which is a ridiculous American ploy to short farmers and natural food producers by making those goods more expensive and then creating a "store generic brand" version of the same product that's cheaper. Yay, save 20 cents! But that packet of breakfast sausages you just put in your cart is made of mostly soy and meat... leftovers. The brand that's beside it, that has the "naturally raised" sticker on it, that one's made of humanely farmed meat and probably a few salts, spices, and safe preservatives."Far East" instant couscous? Made in America, it's heavily mixed with condensed powdered dairy and soy filler. Kosher couscous pearls, you know, from that tiny aisle with grape jelly and yummy crackers? One ingredient. One! Whole wheat. You do not need a chemistry lab to make couscous.
Why am I so passionately angry about this? I'm allergic to dairy, soy, cashews, and oats. The ONLY milk I can drink is almond. When I eat bites of oral food (usually for social fun), I have to ask for every last ingredient to make sure I will not cause myself to have an allergic reaction, which is different from a gastroparesis flare up, which need to be medically treated differently, lest further damage be caused by overtreatment or symptoms left to stew and spread. My big kid and I are also touch-sensitive to oats, so, in addition to not tolerating whole-grain bread, we cannot use many lotions and shampoos (marketed for sensitive skin, lol) because they contain colloidal oats. There are even exam gloves on the market, meant to help nurses with dry skin, which I do understand is a problem, that contain colloidal oat powder (inside) and have a regular silicone outside. There is too high a risk for touch-transfer, though, and we frequently have to ask and remind practitioners to NOT use the oat-poisoned gloves.
ADDITIONALLY, there are something like 3 or 4 types of formula in existence for sustaining us tubies that don't contain at least one of the major allergens (usually dairy or soy). Of those few, at least one has CORN SYRUP as its primary ingredient. Ok, yeah, fortify the tubies and give them easily accessible carbs to keep them running. But, um, nutrition? Like, the absolute and awful, yet hilarious, truth that pirates (yes, of the caribbean) were healthier than individuals of European military forces traveling by sea, because the pirates ate a more balanced diet--fruit, bread, alcohol (aka sanitary hydration), and the redcoats died of things like scurvy because nobody thought to bring a lemon wedge to go with their hardtack and tea... People don't subsist on corn syrup. They can't exercise. They can't gain lung capacity, the ability to walk long distances, the critical thinking to problem solve and maintain self-care and do work. There is ONE type of tubie formula our family depends on (well, 2, because there's grown-up and pediatric) on the market that is allergen-free, pea protein based, contains natural minerals, and mixes with water and other dissolvable powdered supplements. We're immensely blessed to have it. We have to bring our own if anyone's in the hospital, since it's "rare." But OMG, the stuff has saved my life.
Forgive the ranting. I like to explain myself.A lot.

Storybook Ending Unravels For Carp;
Cards Comeback Against Yanks
St. Louis home of the Cardinals and the first professional Major League team Matt Carpenter had ever played for. He had the privilege of wearing the white and red jersey for a better part of 11 seasons. However, if you play long enough in the big leagues you come to release baseball is a business. After two sub-par years, for Matt Carpenter standards, the Cardinals made the baseball decision and DFA (designated for assignment) Carpenter and just like that his time with the only franchise he has ever known was over.
Carpenter would go on a country wide tour to redeveloped/retool his swing for the upcoming 2022 season. After spending some time in the Rangers minor league system he was eventually granted free agency. The Yankees came knocking, Carpenter answered and now he was donning another iconic uniform the Pinstripes.
Since joining New York Carpenter has been on a tear. He is batting .323 with 37 hits, 36 RBI’s, 15 Home Runs and a 1.206 OPS.
On Friday night Carpenter returned back to where it all began, Busch Stadium, in St. Louis.
The Yankees started a 9 game road trip and first stop on the trip Matt Carpenter’s old stomping ground.
Carpenter, hitting third in the lineup, got a standing ovation from the Cardinals fanbase in his first at-bat. Cardinal great, a no-doubter hall of famer, Yadier Molina stepped a few inches away from home plate allowing Carpenter to soak in the moment.
Once the moment was over it was back to business.
Carpenter laced a single to right field allowing DJ LeMahieu to get to third. DJ was walked by Cardinals started Daniel Hudson to open the game. Next third baseman Josh Donaldson lasers a double to center field giving New York an early 1-0 lead.
Nasty Nestor Cortes, whom has been brilliant for New York, gave the lead right back. Cortes walked Arenado and DeJong to set up Yadier Molina. Molina singled up the middle. Scoring was Arenado and the game was tied.
The game remained tied until the third. Judge and Carpenter got on base with back to back singles. Josh Donaldson once again drove in the run for New York with a single to center field which allowed Aaron Judge to score.
In the fifth the Yankees tacked on another run. Aaron Judge singled on a fly ball to right field and that hit chased Cardinals starter Hudson out of the game. Judge than stole second, his 11th of the year, and put himself in scoring position. Gleyber Torres ricocheted a ball off reliever Andre Pallante. The play was enough to allow Judge to score from second to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.
Daniel Hudsons final stat line; 4 innings pitched, 7 hits, 3 earned runs and 2 strikeouts.
New York however, was shut down after Daniel Hudson was relieved by Andre Pallante. Pallante pitched 4 scoreless innings against the Yankees striking out 2 and gave St. Louis life for a comeback.
In the bottom of the sixth Nestor Cortes walked the second batter he faced in that inning Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Boone pulled Cortes after the walk to Goldy finishing Cortes’s night at 5 1/3rd innings, 1 hit, 2 earned runs and 4 strikeouts.
Albert Abreu came in as relief and promptly threw a wild pitch. Goldschmidt took second as a result. Arenado singled moving Goldy up to third. Tyler O’Neill on a 2-1 count delivered a single that cut New York’s lead to one.
Clay Holmes was summoned to pitch the bottom 8th and the Cardinals would complete their comeback. With two outs in the inning and men on first and second Paul DeJong played hero. He laced a double (5th) to right field. Arenado scored the tying run with O’Neill scoring what ended up been the winning run.
In the ninth Ryan Helsley locked down his 10th save of the year against the heart of the Yankees order. The finally batter, Matt Carpenter, grounded out securing the win for St. Louis.
Matt Carpenter watched his storybook return unravel as the Cards snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Sometimes we just don’t get that storybook ending.
In game 2 of the series the Yankees take on their former teammate Jordan Montgomery, 3-3 with 3.69 ERA, and New York will counter with Domingo German 1-1 record and a 6.39 ERA.

17. Dezember
- „Immer wieder“ by Wilhelm Busch
My translation:
Winter is gone and sommer has come. It brings again afresh all the beloved miraculous stuff of flowers and of song.
As it changes this way, year after year, I watch almost with worry. What has lived is dead; what is has been; today turns into tomorrow.
Ever again, the artist called nature must use the ancient clay in house and garden, woods and halls for her newest sketches.

Hippie Car You Go I Go You Ride I Ride You Will Never Be Alone T Shirt
For those who watched the Hippie Car You Go I Go You Ride I Ride You Will Never Be Alone T Shirt Netflix documentary Knock Down the House, Cori Bush will be a familiar face even if the former nurse and pastor’s primary campaign against the incumbent Democratic representative for her district, William Lacy Clay Jr., was ultimately unsuccessful. Undeterred, Bush launched a second campaign for the spot this year, earning a surprise victory in the primary election back in August. Last night, Bush swept to victory once again, defeating her Republican opponent, Anthony Rogers, with 78% of the vote and becoming the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress. Bush, who first made her name as a progressive activist to watch during the unrest that followed the 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, is a leading voice in the Black Lives Matter movement and is hoping to use her platform to heal racial divides across her state.

Fanatics
The materials and processes that i used throughout my Fanatics project included: -Textiles -Heat pressing and transfer paper -Collaging -Fimo clay -Photography + Photoshop
I have looked at a range of artists and art movements including: -Dennis Busch -Barbra Kruger -Carolee Schneemann -Annelies Hof
Problems that i came across during this project included: -the pattern of the lips bag -getting permission to use the “explicit” images -heat-pressing the transfer back to front
When I began my fanatics problem i started with the aim to create a fashion collection inspired by Bratz dolls, I quickly became bored of Bratz dolls and moved onto using Barbie dolls instead because they were what i had available. From there i started to think about the sexualisation of these dolls as well as pornographic feminism. I than got hold of some porn magazines and began to combine the images to represent the issues that i wanted to discuss.Â
