The Thousand Year Door Spanish Name Changes

Nintendo of Europe used to change a lot of names when translating games to Spanish. They usually pumped out some real 50/50s inbetween good names, bad names, and maybe some better to the original. Here are some notables changes in The Thousand Year Door.

Beldam - Piruja

Changed the name to be a synonym for witch, a very tame change.

Goombella - Goomarina

Not a good change, very long and doesn't take advantage of the goom aspect. Personally I would've gone with Goomanda, but that's a personal opinion.

Flurrie - Claudia

I also think this name is a downgrade, it removes the wind pun in her name, but I also couldn't think of a spanish name with a wind pun so I'll give it a a pass.

Vivian - Bibiana

Now this is a really good change. On the surface it's just a surface level change, but you might not know that Bibiana Fernandez is the name of a real trans actress. It's so similar to Vivian's original name I'm not sure if it was intentional from the beggining, but I can't prove this.

Grubba - Leonardo

Sure, Grubba is a double pun on both Grubby and Clubba, but Leonardo is such a funny name for him that I gotta give it the thumbs up

Rawk Hawk - Rawk Hogan

This is also a really good name. It's so obvious actually, that I only think it wasn't in the game because to avoid legal issues.

Flavio - Marco

I'm torn on this one because on one hand Marco is a clear cut reference to Marco Polo, but on the other hand Flavio rolls off the tounge so well I gotta give it points too. I have to point out he's called Marco in the japanese version too, so the name isn't ESP exclusive.

Bobbery - Bombard

I'm not sure on this one, feels off.

Pennington - Holmot

Pennington is already based on Poirot, so fusing Holmes and Poirot's names is A-Ok for me.

Magnus Von Grapple - Mazinrobo X

Cool reference, I think they should've gone with this, obviously without the robot. Maybe Mazinbot for ENG.

Grodus - Xenon

Grodus doesn't have a chemist appearance, and I think this was only chosen because of the X in the name. Dissapointing.

Ms. Mowz - Lupina

Another anime reference like Magnus Von Grapple. Maybe it would've be too on the nose but I like this one too, they should've chosen one of the too, but I would lean more to this one.

That's all the notable names I could think of, if I didn't mention a name it was either because it didn't change the name from the english version (Ex: Koops, Cortez and Shadow Queen) or took the name from the japanese version instead (Ex: Hooktail and co, Doopliss and Crump).

😍 ACT-verse series (ann_anotherthing) - truly outstanding series about middle-aged Steddie getting a 2nd chance romance after their first one flamed out 25 yrs earlier. Full series is 117K but it starts with A Certain Type (54K), which is a fully complete story with satisfying HEA - the rest are flashback fics or wonderfully indulgent epilogue/vignettes, full of fluffy and delicious porn. The author confesses to basically turning them into her middle-aged OCs but 1) I think her projections of their characters in middle-age with these particular life experiences seem reasonably plausible and more importantly 2) I don't fucking care because this story and these characters (main & supporting) are AMAZING.

Stiles's parents both being Polish and to different "degrees" was one thing I never questioned. Granted, I grew up in Chicago, where it was common for someone that was essentially Polish in last name only to marry someone that had Poland-born parents that were happy the spouse was also Polish to any extent.

I have a lot of questions for Jeff Davis about his choices for the McCalls and Hales, however. It definitely felt like the Hales were hispanic-coded and/or indigenous-coded at times despite being played by white actors. Meanwhile, we get almost nothing about the background of either of Scott's parents beyond Melissa's maiden name and, I guess, Rafe speaking Spanish to teenage Derek. What a wild combination of choices.

the names scott and stiles come directly from the 1985 teen wolf movie but everything else is jeff and the writing team.

the way that we know more about the argents, the hales, the yukimuras and the stilinskis than we do about scott's family has always made me feel a particular way.

the argents and hales are the driving force behind so much of the narrative that their history is important to the overall narrative. noshiko's story was important to the story of 3B. malia's history intersects with the hales.

we even get a whole season to learning about lydia's banshee grandmother.

(i want to say there's something in that cora ended up in south america after the fire and went back there after she left beacon hills. do the hales have ties there?)

rafael mccall is just kind of there. i have affection for matthew del negro because he was steve cortez in mass effect and he was fucking wasted by teen wolf. how did he and melissa meet? did scott actually live with him for a while after the divorce as was said in season 1? why didn't we get to see rafael learn about the supernatural as was implied? did this man pay child support?

it's funny. @dear-massacre and i discussed earlier that there's such a small polish population in california but jeff gives us the vaguely polish name stilinski and claudia's maiden name is gajos. stiles is named for his polish grandfather mieczyslaw.

the only other vague slavic name we have is paige's last name, which is never said in canon but it's krasikeva.

jeff did something very deliberate with paige. she's a narrative mirror to sitles.

but yeah it would make sense that noah's family has been in the states longer and assimilated losing some of that cultural tie whereas claudia's either family came more recently and/or they kept cultural ties refusing to lose them to assimilate as much.

Sylvia Moore, 18 (USA 1986)

18-year-old Sylvia Moore underwent an abortion on December 31, 1986. Thanks to the extreme malpractice of abortionist Arnold Bickham, she wouldn’t live to see the new year.

Sylvia was in severe pain after the abortion, but instead of finding the problem, Bickham just repeatedly injected the teenage girl with Demerol even though she was bleeding, weak, and unable to walk. When Sylvia tried to get to her feet, she collapsed.

Bickham kept calling Sylvia "lazy," plunked her in a wheelchair, and physically ejected her from his Chicago abortion facility. Sylvia's mother was horrified. She got her daughter into the car and tried to drive her to the hospital since Bickham hadn’t even called an ambulance, but by the time the car made it to the ER, Sylvia had no detectable blood pressure and no heartbeat.

An emergency hysterectomy revealed a shocking amount of malpractice. Sylvia had a 6.5 cm laceration in her uterus with a plastic tool embedded inside. Bickham had somehow left the large piece of plastic inside of Sylvia during the abortion. Another bleeding laceration was found in her vagina, which was 2.2 cm long. Doctors at the hospital were unable to save Sylvia’s life because of the extent of her injuries. She died painfully of internal bleeding on the same day as the abortion.

When questioned on his horrific treatment of Sylvia, Bickham claimed that he hadn’t noticed anything was even wrong with her (despite the fact that she couldn’t walk, was bleeding internally and had a piece of plastic lodged in one of her organs). He claimed that Sylvia died because the hospital perforated an artery and left blood in the chest cavity, but Sylvia’s autopsy proved his claims false. In fact, the chest cavities were “free of fluid and adhesions" according to the coroner.

The postmortum report stated that "The circumstances of injury, review of the Medical records, the findings at autopsy examination, and subsequent investigation of the circumstances of the case provide evidence of gross negligence and abandonment on the part of the original treating physician. In consideration of the above, the manner of death is determined to be Homicide."

Sylvia’s family sued for her homicide. The lawsuit noted that the abortionist failed to perform an ultrasound and failed to have adequate staff or equipment. Bickham's license was revoked by Illinois in October of 1988 due to Sylvia's death. Despite the autopsy findings, he was not charged with the homicide of Sylvia Moore. He was, however, arrested in September of 1989 for practicing medicine without license, and sentenced to 30 months probation and 2,600 hours of community service in lieu of 6 months jail, in addition to a $10,000 fine. He accumulated a long record of malpractice, including but not limited to performing “abortions” on clients who were not pregnant and sometimes not fully under anesthesia.

Eventually Bickham retired from the abortion business, but someone made the questionable decision to hire him as a public school administrator. Nobody guilty of the homicide of a teenage girl has any business overseeing the welfare or education of children.

Other Americans killed by legal abortion in 1986 include Christella Marie Forte, Luz Maria Rodriguez, Janyth Caldwell, Laniece Dorsey, Magnolia Thomas, Gail Elaine Flowers Wright, Gloria Aponte, Carol Cunningham, Claudia Caventou, Dorothy Bryant, Liliana Cortez, Donna Heim, Jacqueline Reynolds, Michelle Madden and Rosael Rodriguez-Rosado.
