I just reread The Beauty and the Beast, and its message resonated with me more deeply than ever. It’s not just a story of romance—it's a powerful reminder that true beauty is found within. In a world that often emphasizes outward appearances, this tale teaches us that love, compassion, and kindness are what truly define a person’s worth.

The Beast, once trapped by his own arrogance and selfishness, is transformed not because of a magical spell alone, but through the power of love and the healing it brings. Beauty, with her open heart and willingness to see beyond the surface, reminds us of the strength that comes from empathy and understanding. She doesn’t fear what others see in the Beast; instead, she looks deeper, recognizing the goodness that lies hidden within him.

Fresh-petaled with one thorn blooming anew each day until his twenty-first year the Beast barely strayed… In the empty halls, all alone by the window he remained begging for another time, another way. For as my petals began falling all hope had been slain. On one snowy afternoon a disturbance came about, my Beast arose suddenly and was never to be found. My stem grew frail and as Time withered the doors finally opened- ‘twas a stranger, a visitor. In Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid" the mermaid not only longed to be human because she was in love with a Prince, but also because wished to have an "eternal soul." Souls were possessed only by humans, and allowed them to journey into the after life, while merfolk simply turned to seafoam.

The Little Mermaid is a fascinating read today, especially considering historical evidence of the author's possible homosexuality. The Little Mermaid is tragically in love with someone who never loves her back, is in constant pain trying to become something she thinks he could love and ultimately fears her soul will turn to nothingness.

The scene I decided to illustrate is one from the very end of the story, where as the mermaid begins to turn to seafoam the Daughters of the Air ask her to join them in servitude until, once 300 years have passed, the mermaid too may gain a soul. It adds a bit of hope to the end of a tragic story in that perhaps one day the Little Mermaid will gain part of her wish.
