Dave Van Ronk knew the jazz pianist and composer Clarence Williams in his youth. Williams' name is on many, many songs, many (most?) of which he didn't actually write, but bought all the rights to from the people who did. This was a very common practice in the first two decades or so of commercially recorded music. There were probably also some songs he simply stole outright and passed off as his own.
(So when talking about who wrote a particular song that was first recorded in the 'teens, 20s, or 30s, copyright or the record label is not a reliable guide.)
Apparently if you asked Williams about Jelly Roll Morton, he would fly into a rage. "That plagiarist?! That THIEF?!" Apparently Duke Ellington felt the same way, but when Morton was asked about the subject (in the context of WC Handy), he said, "Well, yes, there was a lot of unprotected material around in those days."

Bumpy Johnson: A leader, like a shepherd, he sends his fastest nimble sheep, out front. And the others will follow. While the shepherd walks quietly behind... Now he's got the stick and the cane, and he'll use it! If he has to. But most times, he doesn't have to. He moves the whole herd quietly.

Clarence Williams (on piano) & His Orchestra (~1925)
The restlessness and entrepreneurial energy that would drive this prolific jazzman - one-part musician, one-part businessman and one-part hustler - were already apparent when Clarence Williams was 12, running away from home to join a traveling minstrel show run by popular comedian Billy Kersands.
That started a remarkable journey from New Orleans to Chicago to New York that would see this one-time honky-tonk pianist, vaudeville showman and cabaret manager - plus songwriter (including some that weren't really his own), music publisher, theatrical producer, A&R man and Harlem Renaissance convenor - play with some of the best, notably including early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Bessie Smith.
Clarence Williams was supposed to retire in 1943, having sold his back catalogue (of more than 2,000 songs) to Decca Records for US$50,000. He was soon back in business however, running his own used goods store, The Harlem Thrift Shop. He continued to write songs until he lost his sight in 1956, after being hit by a cab.

Today We Honor Clarence Williams III
Clarence Williams lll was an amazing actor who starred as Linc Hayes, the hit ABC show “The Mod Squad,” which ran from 1968 to 1973, was one of the first of its kind — a prime-time network series.
Although “The Mod Squad” made Mr. Williams a symbol of the Vietnam War generation, he actually served in the military just before that era. He was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division in the late 1950s.
He played Prince’s father in “Purple Rain” (1984) and Wesley Snipes’s father in “Sugar Hill” (1993). Williams lll was a crazed blackmailer in John Frankenheimer’s “52 Pick-Up” (1986) and a wild-eyed storytelling mortician in “Tales From the Hood” (1995). He had small roles in “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” (1988) and in Norman Mailer’s “Tough Guys Don’t Dance” (1987).
