San Fermin Bring New Album to Sold-Out Hometown Show at Racket
San Fermin – Racket – April 5, 2024
San Fermin is the summer festival celebrated in Pamplona, Spain, where the famed running of the bulls occurs. To name a band after such an event reveals much about their evolution, and for founder Ellis Ludwig-Leon, it was a catalyst to release what was thought to be a standalone project back in 2012. Allen Tate and Claire Wellin take turns sharing vocals, while trumpeter John Brandon, saxophonist Stephen Chen, drummer Griffin Brown and guitarist Tyler McDiarmid add to the collective sound that blends indie rock with chamber pop. On Friday night, the Brooklyn band trampled into a sold-out Racket with their new album, Arms.
As the Cranberries’ “Dreams” played over the house speakers, the collective began the set with the lead single, “Weird Environment.” Ludwig-Leon cheerfully remarked, “It’s great to be home,” before Tate crooned crowd-favorite “Emily.” Although Wellin played fiddle on the previous song, her vocals took center stage on the melancholic “My Love Is a Loneliness.” The juxtaposition of Tate's rich baritone and Wellin’s lilting delivery anchored the show through sonic lows and highs, bringing delight to hometown fans, many of them shouting from the balconies. Prior to performing the title track, “Arms,” Ludwig-Leon shared that he’d gone through a difficult time making the album and that Tate was instrumental in guiding the process with sage advice — even on his honeymoon, a testament to their decades-long partnership.
Trumpeter Brandon and saxophonist Chen parted the floor as they descended into the crowd, blowing solos on oldie “Sonsick,” one of the night’s exuberant highlights. To preempt the thought of an encore, Tate mentioned learning on tour that “encores are like peekaboos for adults,” announced that they’d have a few more songs. Wellin sang, “You Owe Me,” the new LP’s last track, which delved into an unraveling relationship, like much of the material on Arms. Finally, the freewheeling “Jackrabbit” had everyone in the room on their feet jumping. It was a satisfying homecoming and the perfect end to the first leg of their tour. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

I just saw san fermin live, I really enjoyed it! I meant to post my thoughts about their new album (maybe I will later, idk) but it was a good album so naturally I enjoyed seeing it performed. bride was insane to hear live, I adore charlene kaye's voice but I think claire wellin has a slightly larger range, and she really elevated an already great song by pushing every high note.
before I complain about anything, I do want to reiterate that the performance was fantastic and I would absolutely see them again. they're amazing. that being said... sonsick was kind of disappointing. I think it's a really difficult song to perform live, especially if you can't match the frankly insane vocal range of holly laessig and jess wolfe, although claire came pretty close and I think overall the biggest problem was the lack of a female backup vocalist. it made half of the chorus sound muted and generally underwhelming.
they also didn't play no promises, which bummed me out :( I guess it's not one of their more popular songs, but it's one of my favorites and I was hoping to hear it. oh well. they did close with jackrabbit, which was really fun. but I'm annoyed at the crowd for not singing along when claire asked them to, because I have a bad voice and being one of the only people singing out loud was embarrassing! but I powered through it because I never say no to a beautiful woman. and also because singing along at concerts is fun even if you suck :)

ok i’m glad i got out for san fermin bc i am so powered up rn. they played “emily” second and i was like “oh cool well i will be satisfied with whatever else they do now” and then they played every other song i wanted to hear. claire wellin has an insane stage presence—a charismatic black hole sucking everything in the room in. and um the rest of my thoughts on that subject are not fit to print. also saxophonists continue to slay the most. i have never heard someone making a bari scream like that and i thought it had to be on the production end but nope
#text tag#sorry now i’m going to bitch. i swear this state is trying to test me to see if sometime in the next 2 months i am gonna completely snap on#someone. if you see me alone in public and you think my vibes are peculiar but i am not bothering anyone you can simply keep it moving#this guy (who was with someone) very kindly asked if he was blocking my view and i was like no you’re good and he was like feel free to tell#me if i ever am! and i was like thanks! and then he proceeded to like nonverbally check on me and herd me around like a sheepdog for the#rest of the evening. omfg#the amount of both street harassment and people treating me like i’m 12 is 500% more here than in nyc and i can’t take itttttttt#anyway. deep breaths. there was some incredibly beautiful lightning from the storm rollling through on the drive back

San Fermin- Arms (Better Company Records)
San Fermin- Arms (Better Company Records)
Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s band San Fermin is back with their fifth album. Nine songs filled with heartbreak from not one, but two breakups Ellis experienced. The emotions truly rise up on this album through the music and the lyrics sung by alternating vocalists Allen Tate and Claire Wellin. The first track, “Weird Environment,” has a rockin’ guitar melody resembling New Order in parts. Allen sings the most toe-tapping song on the album filled with those heartfelt lyrics I mentioned. “Burned my life down to the ground. Emptied out the Hungry Ghost. Wrote a sad song to get it out. If it helped, I didn’t notice.” The song builds to a punch later with driving instrumentation. Here’s the video:
youtube
Next up, “Didn’t Want You To,” Claire steps in to sing with a subtle twang, “I’ll find my way; Out of this place soon; If you didn’t want me, I didn’t want you to.” A beauty of a song complete with added horns. You can watch the video here:
youtube
Track 3, “Can't Unsee It,” brings Allen back on vocals with a gorgeous song that kind of reminds me of Lord Huron or The National for some reason. Love the horns on this one as well. Next is the title track, “Arms,” a bouncy piano ballad where Allen’s vocals shine here. A beautiful guitar solo adds to its lyrics. “Oh, I’m falling for you so madly; As soon as I leave, I just want to come back; And I know this is going to end badly; Cuz it feels like you are the one thing that I have; And who am I to hold you when you have arms for the whole world?” Here’s the video:
youtube
Track 5, “Makes Me Want You,” Claire takes over with multiple layers of her vocal tracks. Along with gorgeous piano and trumpet, this “makes me want (the song) more.” Claire is also lead vocals on the next track, “My Love Is A Loneliness.” The third single off of the album is one you’re sure to sing along with in no time. I know I have. More multiple-layered vocals that will move any listener to tears. Powerful imagery also in the lyrics: “If everyone leaves and everyone dies; It’s just a question of when; If everyone cheats and everyone lies; Rather it me than them; If the worst should happen; And it will, and will again; I will still be standing; With loneliness, my friend; To start again.” The video can be seen here:
youtube
Next up, “Useful Lies,” is a beautiful, soft acoustic guitar melody sung by Allen. And then wait for it, here come the strings, the harmonies, and the horns that make this song truly soar! Track 8, “Wasting on Me,” Allen and Claire’s harmonies really blend here on this more upbeat song. The beauty of the boy/girl vocals really makes this one stand out. “Never meant to lead you down a road of sadness. But we’ve arrived where there’s nothing to be done. Could pretend there was a moment when we lost it. But we were running different races from the gun.” The album ends with “You Owe Me.” It’s back to Claire on lead vocals with a soft, sad piano-driven melody. In comes the brass that really helps capture the mood. Emotional heartbreak here with, “And I had to get my stuff out of your parents’ place. Your father wouldn’t even meet me in my eye.” The album was recorded at Better Company Studios in Brooklyn by none other than Allen Tate, the male vocalist. A national tour begins in the middle of March(see below). The last time I saw San Fermin was ten years ago at FRZN FEST in Madison. You don’t want to miss this album performed live; I know I won’t. Happy New Year!
Leon: Cheers for a wonderful New Year! *drinks*
Chris: What are you doing?
Leon: I'm celebrating New Year...
Chris: Leon, we have to wait 5 more hours for that
Leon: Well, it is "Happy New Year" somewhere in the world
Chris: ...
Claire: He is kind of right, you know
Chris: Stop it. You will wait to celebrate New Year "officially" in your country
Leon: This house is a nightmare
Becca: Can we eat something before 12 o'clock, though?
Chris: Fine...

Youth In A Roman Field – “Albatross” (Song Premiere)
Today is a great day to share the new single from Youth In A Roman Field, called “Albatross.” Youth In A Roman Field is comprised of Claire Wellin, the violinist and vocalist of Brooklyn’s indie rock band, San Fermin. On her latest solo offering, entitled Get Caught Trying, Wellin channels sweeping instrumentation backed with breathtaking vocals in crowd-pleasing arrangements. Wellin shared: ”Albatross” is a direct answer to a question I asked myself often while writing this record: ‘Am I here to break the cycle?’ Sonically, it’s influenced by the simplicity and subtlety of Nick Drake and Arthur Russell, whom I’ve loved for decades. Lyrically, it’s an honest expression of my own struggles with self-worth and power, an examination of destructive thought and behavior patterns. It’s an offering of love and acceptance to my younger self and a breaking-free of debilitating thoughts and the social conventions that cement them. It directly explores generational cycles and trauma as the thread between myself and the women who came before me. It is a pledge to rebirth, freedom, and celebration – that we, in fact, already know the ‘motions’ of our own way. And while we can’t retrieve any of our time spent in and on the past, we are here – for ourselves and for each other – now. This was a thrilling studio experience, as Jamie, Tiffany, and Scott all brought in game-changing ideas that had a huge impact on the song’s construction, specifically at the end, when Tiffany changed the entire vibe of the song with this incredible, nostalgic, wholly improvised tone-change. The movements in the video are based on & inspired by Somatic Exercises used for re-learning & improving walking, a practice I’ve gotten really into this year through physical therapy. It’s brought me a ton of relief from chronic pain related to years of repetitive stress injuries, for which I’ve spent time rehabbing since 2014. The simplest (and, interestingly enough, least capitalist) remedies have been the most effective, and we wanted to capture that discovery, joy, and simplicity of being to visually support the song. If you’ve been looking for the next great artist to put on your radar, look no further than Youth In A Roman Field. San Fermin Close Out Fall Tour at Home at Brooklyn Steel on Friday Night
Composer and singer-songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone launched the artistically diverse chamber-pop music collective San Fermin eight years ago in Brooklyn. After putting out three acclaimed albums, Ludwig-Leone decided he needed a change of pace and to get out of Kings County, so he decamped for Iceland to work on what would become the first of a two-part release, The Cormorant I (stream it here), out in October. “I like to get away when I’m generating material for the band,” Ludwig-Leone tells Paste. “I need to shake things up. When you get outside of yourself a bit, you look at things with a different perspective. You’re not stuck in the daily rhythms of your normal life; you have 24 hours to devote to the project. The landscape always seeps into the writing.” It’s safe to say that the move paid off: “Bandleader and principal composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone again demonstrates his sublime knack for keying into the molten undercurrent of intimate examinations of the self in his songwriting,” reports Exclaim. “There is pressure building beneath the tenderness of these reflective pieces, and when it bursts, it is glorious.” And now the band—Ludwig-Leone (keys), Allen Tate (vocals), Claire Wellin (vocals and violin), John Brandon (trumpet), Michael Hanf (drums), Stephen Chen (sax) and Tyler McDiarmid (guitar)—returns home to close out their fall tour on Friday night at Brooklyn Steel. Local five-piece Wild Pink open the show.

The Treasury
Joanie and Jamie come across the trunk of Claire’s gowns.
by Mod Bonnie
Thought of the Lallybroch attic always made Joan’s heart race wi’ panic, though she’d only set foot inside it the once.
She and Mam and Da and Marsali had all been over for supper shortly after the weddin’, months back, and the big folk had kept talkin’ and talkin’ so late into the night like they’d never stop! Finally, she and Marsali had gotten so bored, they’d crept off to explore the house wi’ some of the other children, finding themselves at last up in the attic. The place was ghostly and drafty in the candlelight, and some of the boys had started tellin’ tales of spooks and ghouls and nuckelavees, sendin’ shivers down Joanie’s back. She’d nearly wet herself wi’ relief when the group all ran back down the steps into safety, giggling from the excitement of it. She’d giggled too, but never had she ever been so scairt in all her life. It had woken her, sometimes, the nightmares of bein’ trapped up there alone in the creaky darkness.
Today, though, Da had held her hand as they went up the steps, and wi’ him beside her, the light of day shinin’ through the windows and cracks, Joan saw the place for what it was: a treasury, stacked all ‘round wi’ precious secret things just waitin’ to be discovered. She’d learnt that word in a book once, and always had loved the grand sound of it: the queen’s treasury.
He and Mam had had a fight, that mornin’, a great stramash that had made all the rooms of the house echo. Joan had run out into the dooryard wi’ her hands over her ears. She hated when they did that: yelled at one another so. It was like havin’ Simon back in the house again.
She bit her tongue the moment she’d thought such a thought, for Da wasna anything like Simon. Da never would beat them, and he was kind and funny— better than any man she’d ever met! Well....for her and Marsali, at least. Mam didna seem to like him verra much.
He’d stormed out of the door, startling her from where she sat. He’d gotten Baron saddled in a flash, and had just reined about to ride out to the road, when he’d spotted her. Though his face was red, still, from the yelling, he’d smiled at once, a real smile, and held out a hand. “Come wi’ me to Lallybroch, a leannan?”
After takin’ tea wi’ Auntie Jenny and Uncle Ian, Da had wandered about through the house. It seemed he wasna in any rush to get back to Balriggan or Mam. Joan wasna either, if she were bein’ truthful. They’d been in the library, Da showin’ her this book and that, but then he took a notion after a particular book that he couldna seem to find on the shelves. And so, the two of them had ended up in the attic, rummagin’ to find a box of things from when Da was at university in Paris.
“D’ye recall what sort of box it would be in, Da?” Joan asked, rubbing her nose, which was running from all the dust kicked up in the air.
She didna take much heed of his answer, for just at that moment, she’d caught sight of a lovely, big trunk over in the corner by the window in the eaves. She made for it eagerly, catchin’ open the clasps and flippin’ open the lid.
She gasped. TREASURE.
“Joan? Are ye alright?” came Da’s voice at once. “Joanie, did ye hurt your—”
“Da, LOOK!” she squealed as she lifted the item on the top: a gown as red and glistening as a jewel. The fabric was fine and rare, and Joanie knew for certain that this was the most grand thing she’d ever held in her two hands. She felt almost as though she were in kirk, such a thrill it brought over her.
“Dinna touch those!”
He was moving fast toward her and the look on his face made her spring up to her feet, jumping back. “I’m sorry,” she blurted, tears wellin’ up in her eyes at once. “I’m sorry, I willna touch it again— promise!”
He didna say anythin’. He was crouched at the trunk, his eyes movin’ over the stuff inside in a crazed sort of way, as though he were afraid it would catch fire. That seemed to go on for long, long time, and Joan had to clamp her hands over her mouth to keep from burstin’ out into sobs.
Please dinna hate me....
Then, he seemed to remember where he was. He looked up—were those tears in his eyes, too?— and his face went all soft, but sorry-like, as though he were ashamed. “Forgive me, Joanie,” he whispered, holding out his arms to her. “I shouldna have snapped at ye.”
All trembly, her gullet tight and burnin’ from tryin’ not to cry, she took his hand and let him pull her into a hug that brought happiness all the way down to her toes. “I hadna seen those things in many years, and they gave me quite a turn...” His voice was scratchy as he said it. “But truly,” he whispered, planting a kiss at the top of her cap, “I’m sorry, lass. Can ye forgive me for it?”
All felt right again as she nodded and hugged him back, sniffling into his shoulder and lettin’ herself be held, just for a while longer.
“Where did these come from, Da?” she asked a bit later as she turned back toward the chest, curiosity too strong to ignore. “All of these gowns and fine things!” At his nod of permission, she gingerly picked up a pair of gloves, embroidered with golden thread. “I’ve never seen anything like it in all my life! Did a queen live here, once, then?”
He laughed, and she gave him a stern “What?” for she hadn’t meant it as a jest.
“Aye...she was a queen, of sorts.” He reached out a hand and traced his fingers across the crimson fabric, just like Joan had herself. His voice was very low and verra sad. “A lady who was verra special indeed.” He gently moved the red gown to the side to show the one beneath, and Joan heard him breathe out a wee smilin’ sound.
“Why are they up here, though, Da?” she demanded, gingerly reachin’ out and strokin’ the lovely thing along wi’ him. It was greener than anythin’, even more than the grass in summer. “Why does nobody wear them?”
“Can ye imagine your Auntie Jenny milking the goats in such a gown, then?” he said, laughin’ and makin’ her giggle too. “Nay, they’re from a different time, lass, before the Rising. No one’s quite the need of such finery anymore; not here, anyway.”
“Oh.... that’s too bad.” Her heart was falling like stone. “They’re just so beautiful...”
She’d always hoped that when she grew up, there would be beautiful gowns and pretty things. They werena necessary, she supposed, and it wasna so much that she cared overmuch for them herself, as Marsali did. But the notion had always been a secret dream in her mind: that even if things since the Rising —since before she was born—had been naught but hard and sad, someday there would be beautiful things in her life too. Hearing it from Da, now, that there was no place for them—it made her want to crawl into the chest and nestle in amongst the gowns and fall asleep among their beauty. She thought that their wonder would seep into her skin, that way, and keep forever in her dreams, if there they must stay.
There was a tear on her cheek, then another, but Da was nudging her, eagerly. “Shall we see what they look like on another fine lady?”
Before she could answer, he was standing her on her feet and movin’ across the room, comin’ back wi’ a wee looking glass, which he propped up against the lid of the trunk.
“What, ME?” she squawked. “Try them ON?”
“And why not? It’s no’ as though I’m a lady, aye?”
She giggled.
“Here...”
Minutes later, she was sittin’ on Da’s lap, looking at her reflection and hardly believing her eyes. The golden gown was around her shoulders, puddled huge about her like a great pudding, a fine comb holding up her hair in place of the plain cap, and in her hand was the most beautiful fan she’d ever seen. It didna look like herself, in the glass.
“Da, I canna wear this,” she said uneasily, trying to stand up and remove the gown.
“But of course ye can,” he said at once, holding her firmly, and she could see his smile in the looking-glass as well as hear it in his voice.
“But Marsali says,” she insisted, “I canna ever wear yellow, because of my hair. Red-heided lasses canna wear gold or yellow or pink or—”
“Nonsense! They can wear whatever they like,” Da said.
“Aye? Truly?”
“I give ye my word upon it,” he said solemnly.
“Oh....well....that’s good then,” she said, still nervous that Marsali would barge in and tease her. She sighed. “I wish I had hair like Mam and Marsali.”
He snorted. “Well I dinna wish that.”
That surprised her. “Do ye no’ think their hair is bonny?”
“Oh, aye, it’s lovely... but red hair,” he said, runnin’ his fingers over the top of her head, “is my favorite.”
“‘Cause you have it too?” she said, grinning.
“Well, I’ve a longstanding personal partiality, to be sure,” he agreed with a grin as he let her tie a fine blue ribbon around his queue. “Besides,” he said, sounding dreamy as she finished the bow, “my own daug—”
He stopped.
“What, Da?”
He stared at her for a moment, and she thought she’d never seen anyone with eyes so blue. “Only that your red hair is one of the things about ye that makes me happy, Joanie.”
His voice was cracked and croakin’, and somethin’ in it made her lean forward and plant a kiss on his cheek. She felt his stubble tug against her lips as he smiled.
“Besides—” He pulled her back onto his lap and tweaked the mirror so she could see the both of them in the glass. “Can ye no’ see for yourself how beautiful ye are?”
And because he’d said it, she could.
“What was her name?” she asked, her voice sounding like one in a dream, full of mystery, like the music of a priest’s prayer.
“Her name?”
“The queen-lady,” Joanie insisted. She had the the gowns and the fine things treasured up into her memory, now. All she needed was a name to finish the story in her mind. “What was she called?”
“She...”
Joanie watched his face as he tried to remember the tale.
“Her name was Sorcha.”

CONCERT REVIEW: SAN FERMIN W/ LOW ROAR AT THE BILTMORE CABARET - APRIL 20TH, 2017
Eight musicians on one stage is a sight to behold, as well as a balancing act that can easily descend into unintentional chaos. That said, San Fermin, their talent, and their orchestral style of indie pop was chaos of the best kind on Thursday night at the Biltmore.
Warming up the room was Low Roar, hailing from Iceland but fronted by American ex-pat Ryan Karazija. Full of irregular beats that were heavy and booming, it’s easy to hear how music like this could have been created amidst the mountainous landscapes of Iceland. Despite the heavy themes of loneliness and wandering woven within the synths and vocals, there were musical moments that grazed on the beginnings of dancehall anthems, adding energy to the crowd in the packed floor in front of the stage. With some serious harmonies and minute after minute without interruption, Low Roar primed the audience for what was to come.
An energetic atmosphere was created from the moment musician after musician (8, in total) that comprises San Fermin’s live lineup walked up to the stage. San Fermin is the magnum opus of Brooklyn’s Ellis Ludwig-Leone, who composed all the music played onstage. He stayed in the front corner of the stage throughout the night, behind sets of keyboards and in no way playing the part of conductor. Instead, the vibes between those assembled onstage was truly amiable, and one of genuine camaraderie that infected the crowd in front of them. Each other member onstage—Allen Tate, Charlene Kayne, Tyler McDiarmid, Michael Hanf, John Brandon, Claire Wellin and Stephen Chen, let themselves get lost in the joy of performing and shared it with those assembled. Throughout each song, it was impossible to stay focused on one member, the viewer’s eye being pulled from side to side as the stage was shared.
They played a wide variety of songs, pulling from recent release Belong that dropped on April 7th, as well as well-known favourites from their previous two albums. At the beginning of a fan-favourite, “Sonsick,” a cue was missed but the crowd picked up the slack, singing the first lines from heart. That was all part of the charm that there was an abundance of, the crisp lights onstage letting the music and interactions between band members form the bulk of the entertainment. It was near impossible not to be engaged by those onstage as they offered up chilling harmonies and intricately-woven arrangements.
Taking indie-pop to the levels of art-rock, San Fermin delivered a performance that was precocious but not pretentious, the sheer talent of those assembled layered with the fun that was had resulting in a party that was for everyone.

Reiki Healing For Tinnitus Staggering Useful Ideas
My personal experience and introduction to the military who, though they were technologically advancing rapidly, had a constant round of insomnia and exhaustion. The ring of my Whole Health Therapy for Fibromyalgia both extremely powerful and yet effective truth about Reiki with Tai Chi report noticeable differences in treatment effectiveness. You will find that the person can bring a state of consciousness to travel to another individual. The only role of Reiki on the more powerful they will then become a Reiki class and right eye.

SAN FERMIN
THE CORMORANT I & II
El proyecto de dos partes The Cormorant de San Fermin saldrá a la venta el 27 de marzo. Hoy disponible el single y “Little Star”.
Reserva el álbum aquí.
Escucha/descarga/mira “Little Star”.
