What would this be (see attached)?
It was growing on a cedar stump in Vancouver BC, August 31.
I have next to no knowledge about lichens, so I would like to get to know my fellow symbionts a bit better.
That's a Cladonia! Most likely Cladonia macilenta. I love their tiny red apothecia!

Cladonia sp. (my bet is on C. macilenta, but one should never trust Cladonias on looks, and I don't have the supplies here to do chemical tests).
South-eastern Vancouver island, BC, Canada. March 15, 2024.

Another day, another raised bog. Thankfully there was the wooden path, the rest of the area was extremely muddy.
There was at least one species of lichen we were possibly able to determine: Cladonia sp. (Possibly macilenta.)
We also saw a pair of ravens (Corvus corax) flying over our heads!

On a bleak, gray December afternoon, the best color on Brown’s Hill in the Mason-Dixon Historical Park was provided courtesy of its lichen, moss, and fungi. From top: Lipstick powderhorn lichen (Cladonia macilenta), also known as scarlet pin lichen; turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor), with a green cast caused by an algae; Dixie reindeer lichen (Cladonia subtenuis), the most common of West Virginia’s five reindeer lichens; common greenshield lichen (Flavoparmelia caperata), which most frequently grows on tree trunks; and rock greenshield lichen (Flavoparmelia baltimorensis), which grows primarily on sedimentary rock.

These are Cladonia lichens, maybe C. macilenta the “lipstick powderhorn.” Sunrise Park, Suffield CT 10/28/2020

Bengal or Devil’s Matchsticks (Cladonia floerkeana). Hard to confirm as the lichen is perhaps still immature. Could be Cladonia macilenta. Cladonia means ‘branch or twig-like’. Though it’s difficult to see in this image, the lichen’s ‘apothecia’ (the tiny cup-like fruiting bodies that emerge from the twiggy tips) are bright red — like the head of a match. Found these little ‘matchsticks’ growing on a tree stump. Rocks of Solitude, Edzell, Angus, September 2020. SP

Ok how the heck do I tell the difference between cladonia cristatella and macilenta? Google hasn't given me the best answers
My friend, there are many, many Cladonia species out there and identifying them is no easy feat considering the similarities between many species and the individual variation within species. For C. cristatella and C. macilenta, it looks like the major key difference is that C. macilenta (right) often has sorediate podetia (granular vegetative propagules dusting the stalks) and lacks a cortex (outer layer) near the top of the podetia, and C. cristatella (left) does not have soredia and has a cortex all the way up the podetia.
Not every picture I can find of these lichens reflects this--perhaps due to misidentification of the lichen pictured, or perhaps because these features aren't entirely exclusive. There might be some other features, but you're right in that the internet isn't super helpful on this front.
